Audi Q2 ‘deep learning concept’ explores possibility of self-learning intelligent parking technology

Autonomous cars are slowly but surely gaining more appeal among drivers around the world. While a complete self-driving system has yet to be launched, carmakers have been finding ways to make sure it would be plausible and viable in the near future.

Now, Audi is showcasing at the Conference and Workshop on Neural Information Processing Systems (NIPS) in Barcelona, Spain (December 5 to 10, 2016) a new technology that it believes would be one of the keys for autonomous cars – a self-learning system that could intelligently park by itself. Developed by Audi subsidiary Audi Electronics Venture (AEV), this technology is showcased through an Audi Q2 small crossover – more specifically a 1:8 scale model car – that could develop intelligent parking strategies. In a sense, this model car called the “Audi Q2 deep learning concept” is able to learn through trial and error. How does this concept achieve that?

Of course, there is a lot of sensing involved. The Audi Q2 deep learning concept is installed with sensor technology that makes use of two mono cameras – one mounted on the front facing forward and another fitted on the posterior facing rearward. In addition, this sensor technology makes use of 10 ultrasonic sensors installed around the Audi Q2 deep learning concept. These two cameras and ultrasonic sensors transmit data to a central on-board computer that in turn translates these data into control signals for steering and the electric motor.

Audi unveils new Q2 premium compact SUV at 2016 Geneva Motor Show

Audi has unveiled at 2016 Geneva International Motor Show its latest offering that will usher its entry into the subcompact crossover segment – the new Audi Q2. With a length of just 4.19 meters (13.7 ft.), the new Audi Q2 is smaller than full-sized SUVs, but still features the connectivity, infotainment and assistance systems found on its larger siblings.

Aside from sporting a youthful and vigorous design, the new Q2 allows its users to enjoy driving while immersing themselves with its high level of functionality.

At the heart of the Q2 lies a choice of six power engines: three TFSI and three TDI engines with displacements ranging between 1.0 liters and 2.0 liters, and power outputs ranging between 815 kW (116 hp) and 140 kW (190 hp).

Audi gives up on Q2 name for its compact SUV, settles for Q1

As much as possible, Audi would not use the Q1 badge for its new compact SUV, as the name is too close to its A1 minicar. But it is now. Audi -- which uses the Q badge for its SUV/crossovers like the Q3 compact, the Q5 midsize and the large Q7 -- had preferred to use the Q2 name, but it is held by Alfa Romeo.

Sources privy with the German premium carmaker divulged to Automotive News Europe that Audi has approached Alfa’s parent, Fiat Chrysler, to get permission to use the Q2. Fiat Chrysler did not answer; a “yes” would have meant a “significant” payment coming from Audi, a source said. Fiat Chrysler told Automotive News Europe that it was not aware of any approach from Audi over vehicle names.

Fiat Chrysler chief executive Sergio Marchionne has been at odds with Volkswagen chairman Ferdinand Piech over Alfa Romeo. Marchionne has told Audi’s parent to "drop" its efforts to acquire Alfa. Audi announced last month the output of the Q1 will commence at its Ingolstadt site in Germany next year.
