Production of Audi R8 e-tron electric supercar comes to an official halt

Too pricey even for an electric supercar? Or did Audi just give up too soon? Dreadful sales perhaps? Whatever the reason is, the fact is that Audi has officially stopped production of its all-electric R8 e-tron rear-wheel-drive coupe, just around a year since it launched this eco-friendly supercar to the market.

Audi first unveiled the production version of pure-electric R8 e-tron at the 2015 Geneva Auto Show. It was intended to be a showcase of Audi’s advanced battery technology and expertise in electrical system before it launches more practical electric vehicles, including a production version of the Audi e-tron quattro concept in 2018. It is underpinned by the same platform that underpins the conventionally powered R8, but employs pure electric power as propulsion.

The 532 bhp 5.2-liter V10 engine in the R8 has been replaced by an electric powertrain that includes a 92 kWh lithium ion battery that sends power to two electric motors that generate a combined 456bhp of max output and 679 lb ft of peak torque.

2016 Audi R8 e-tron 2.0 announced with 450 km range

Besides the 2016 Audi R8 V10 and R8 V10 Plus models, the German manufacturer also announced the R8 e-tron 2.0, an updated version of its high-performance electric sports car. Although there are no official photos released yet, the new R8 e-tron promises to be a rival for all the current electric sports cars as it will offer an electric range of 540 km (279.6 miles) instead of previous 215 km (133.6 miles).

According to the German manufacturer, the energy density of the battery was increased from 84 Wh/kg to 154 Wh/kg. And speaking of the battery, the R8 e-tron 2.0 uses a large T-shaped battery structurally integrated into the center tunnel and behind the passengers cell, which means that it supports the dynamics of the R8 with its low center of gravity.

The newly developed lithium-ion technology was specially developed for a purely electric vehicle and the battery capacity increased from 49 kWh to 92 kWh. The total output of the R8 e-tron 2.0 is 340 kW or 455.7 hp and an impressive 920 Nm (678.6 lb-ft) of torque. Audi says that its new electric sports car is able to zoom from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.9 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 210 km/h (130.5 mph) or 250 km/h (155.3 mph).

Audi will not sell the R8 e-tron due to battery technology

Although it sounded like a brilliant idea it appears that the R8 e-Tron electric sports car won’t make it into production. According to Autocar, Audi confirmed the fact that it was no plans to sell the all-electric R8. Audi built 10 of the latest design R8 e-Tron but it will use then exclusively for internal testing and developing new technologies.

These models won’t reach the customers, as Audi is not satisfied by the technology incorporated in the battery. Moreover, the costs are also a big problem because the price of the batteries didn’t fall as much as Audi forecast. Audi didn’t want to accept a limited range and a long charging time, as these are what batteries offer currently.

For those who don’t know, the Audi R8 e-Tron is able to hit 62 mph or 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds and has a top speed electronically limited to 124.27 mph (200 km/h). In optimal conditions, the Audi R8 e-Tron has a range of 133.59 miles or 215 km. The R8 e-Tron is supplied with energy by a large 48.6 battery, develops 280 kW (380 hp) and 820 Nm (604.80 lb-ft) of torque.

Iron Man 3 will showcase the Audi R8 e-Tron, R8 Spyder, A8, S5 and Q7

For the third instalment of Iron Man, Tony Stark will still be driving an Audi. This time, it will be an all-electric Audi R8 E-Tron prototype. In the first Iron Man movie in 2008, Stark drove a new R8 while in Iron Man 2, he sat behind the wheel of a R8 Spyder.

There had been rumors that plans to use an Audi R8 E-Tron for the third movie had been scrapped because of concerns related to weight and cost. But this report throws out those speculations. If the R8 E-Tron gets the go signal for it to enter production, it will be equipped with two electric motors that deliver 376 hp and 605 lb-ft of torque. In Iron Man 3, Stark’s girlfriend “Pepper” Potts will also be seen driving the Audi S7.

Audi revealed details of the R8 e-tron model on an article that was published in the latest issue of Encounter magazine. Audi hasn’t been shy about unveiling new details even as the automaker had suspended its development last October. In this article, Audi said that this car is a "hi-tech laboratory on wheels" which will aid in molding its "future series-production projects."

Audi doesn’t dare talk about why it failed to meet its planned 2012 launch. However, it confirmed that just nine exterior body parts (which include the doors, mirror housings and windshield crossmember) are shared with the standard production model. Because of this, the R8 e-tron has several bespoke components such as carbon fiber reinforced plastic body panels, one-of-a-kind LED taillights and distinctive side blades with illuminated "e-tron" badging.

In addition, the standard R8 has a drag coefficient of 0.35 but the R8 e-tron has just 0.27 which lengthens its range by about 40 km (25 miles). Its interior consists of a reworked cockpit with new instrumentation, a modified center console and a bespoke gear knob. It also features leather seats, carbon fiber trim, a digital rearview mirror and an MMI infotainment system with a seven-inch display.

Audi’s proposed all-electric supercar, the R8 e-tron, may be cancelled entirely, according to reports. Audi had said that the R8 e-tron may go into limited production by the end of 2012 but according to Wired, Audi is wavering and may not push through with the program at all. Audi spokesman Mark Dahncke won’t confirm if the R8 e-tron project had been abandoned.

However, he said that the company has yet to make the decision on whether the car will enter series production. He pointed out that battery technology for electric cars is still costly and heavy. The performance of an electric sports car would be affected by too much weight. Meanwhile, the public is likely to be discouraged by its high price tag. Dahncke said that the company hasn’t made a final decision about the vehicle yet.

Aside from the R8 e-tron’s weight and price, it’s possible that the project was opposed by Audi board member Wolfgang Dürheimer, who was newly named as head of Technical Development on its board. Reports indicate that he aims to refocus its research efforts from pure electric propulsion to mainstream plug-in hybrids. This indicates that projects such as the R8 e-tron are placed in jeopardy.

Audi has finally taken the veil off its latest electrified creation at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show – the new the Audi Q4 e-tron concept. This new concept car is a compact four-door SUV that basically provides a good look at the German premium carmaker’s fifth batter electric vehicle that would enter the automotive market by the end of 2020.

Wrapped in “Solar Sky” paint finish, the exterior of the new Audi Q4 e-tron concept is only constrained by its compact dimensions pegged at 4.59 meters in length, 1.90 meters in width and 1.61 meters in height, with a wheelbase of 2.77 meters. It is almost impossible not to indentify the Q4 e-tron concept as an Audi, as the prototype is marked by on the front end by Singleframe with the four rings.

Furthermore, it is also fairly easy to distinguish the concept as an electric Audi e-tron as it features upright octagonal frame instead of a traditional radiator grille. Large inlets can be found extending from below the concept’s two matrix LED headlights to the front apron.

According to the German premium carmaker, the production version of the Audi e-tron GT concept is set to arrive in around two years. This means that could expect the third member of the e-tron family by late 2020, with initial deliveries set in early 2021. The up-and-coming Audi E-tron GT four-door sports car is one of the electric cars that the premium carmaker has promised to deliver before 2025. But as early as now, some details have emerged about the new electric offering from Audi, as divulged by two of the company’s top men to Autocar.

First up is the expected distance that the Audi E-tron GT can travel in a single charge using just electricity. As reported by Autocar, Siegfried Pint, who serves as Technical Director Powertrain Integration at Audi, remarked that the new E-tron GT will have an electric range similar to the E-tron electric SUV. Since the E-tron SUV offers a range of 248 miles (400 km) as per WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure). Nonetheless, he noted that this range would be achieve without hindering potential of the E-tron GT four-door sports car, as this new EV would be “focused more towards power.”

Providing the power for the new Audi E-tron SUV is a 95-kWh lithium-ion battery that brings into life its two electric motors (dual asynchronous motors), with a motor placed on each axle for an all-wheel drive performance. The electric powertrain of the E-tron SUV delivers up to 265 kW (355 hp) of output and up to 413 lb-ft. of torque. But when the “boost mode” is activated, the electric motors will also deliver more power to the wheels, to up to 300 kW (402 hp) of output and up to 490 lb-ft. of torque. In this boost mode, the E-tron SUV can sprint from zero to 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds.

The refreshed version of the Audi R8 boasts of a sharper look and better performance made possible by more powerful V10 engines and a modified suspension system.

As part of the upgrade of the new Audi R8, the premium carmaker is implementing a change in designation. From now on, the Audi R8 Coupé V10 and R8 Spyder V10 will be known as the Audi R8 Coupé V10 quattro and R8 Spyder V10 quattro. On the other hand, the Audi R8 Coupé and R8 Spyder V10 plus will be designated as Audi R8 Coupé performance Quattro and R8 Spyder V10 performance quattro. Audi plans to commence sales of the new R8 in the first quarter of 2019 in Germany and other markets in Europe.

Under the hood of the Audi R8 V10 quattro is a V10 naturally aspirated engine that has powered up by 22 kW (30 hp) and 10 Nm (7.4 lb.-ft.) to 419 kW (570 hp) of max output and 550 Nm (405.7 lb.-ft.) of peak torque. This allows the Audi R8 Coupe V10 quattro to sprint from zero to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 3.4 seconds and the R8 Coupe V10 quattro in 3.5 seconds. Top speeds are 324km/h (201.3 mph) for the Coupe and 322 km/h (200.1 mph) for the Spyder.

Audi has unveiled an all-electric concept car at the Pebble Beach Automotive Week in Monterey, California that visualizes a radical electrically powered driving machine for both the road and the race track. The all-electric Audi PB18 e-tron Concept is essentially a design and technical study of a futuristic high-performance sports car.

Basically, the PB18 e-tron boasts of a technical concept built from Audi's years of victories at the Le Mans, as implemented through the carmaker’s high-performance arm -- Audi Sport GmbH. The “PB18” in its name refers to the place and year (Pebble Beach and 2018) it was unveiled, while the “e-tron” signifies the fact that the concept shares the technological DNA with the Audi R18 e-tron, the carmaker’s high successful LMP1 racing car.

In terms of dimensions, the PB18 e-tron is similar to a classical sports car – it measures 4.53 meters (14.5 ft.) in length, 2 meters (6.4 ft.) in width and 1.15 meters (4.6 ft) in height, with wheelbase of 2.70 meters (8.9 ft) and short overhangs.

To make the annual Worthersee Meet more interesting, Audi decided that that they should electrify the event. And that’s why they brought in a prototype Audi E-tron Quattro towing the E-Tron Vision Gran Turismo Concept. It’s interesting to see two models that represent the company’s future at an event that largely celebrates an iconic model from VW Group’s history.

Firstly, the E-Tron Quattro will be Audi’s first dedicated electric vehicle, which is scheduled to be sold in Europe by the end of the year. In fact, the automaker has already been testing the 250-member fleet of the said model around the world as a means to build buzz and to work out the final details.

Right now, the electric crossover is equipped with a 95 kilowatt hour battery pack that enables the car to drive as far as 248.5 miles (400 kilometers) in the new WLTP driving cycle. As for the powertrain, specs aren’t as clear but the electric motors allegedly produce a total of 435 horsepower (320 kilowatts) or 503 horsepower (379 kilowatts) when there is a temporary power boost.

It was only days ago that the electric SUV had been spotted testing out its zero emissions powertrain on the Green Hell. And we have the spy shots to prove this. But even as the hype is getting high on its arrival, the buzz now is on how Audi presented the official range figures for the new SUV.

Audi brought its E-Tron prototype to the Siemens AG facility in Berlin, Germany. Here, the company decided to shock the E-Tron (literally) with a Faraday cage with a high voltage lightning bolt, and guess what happened to the vehicle? It only got minor burn marks on the roof.

During this shocking presentation by Audi, the new E-Tron’s range was announced. That being said, Audi said that the SUV will have a range of 400 kilometers (248.5 miles) in the European WLTP driving cycle. Take note that they have not released figures for the US just yet.
