ABT Sportsline boosts looks and performance of Audi S5 and A5 Sportback

The Audi RS5 Coupe is a real stunner with its athletic looks and sporty performance. Regarded as a Gran Turismo among RS models by Audi Sport’s chief executive, the Audi RS5 Coupe offers 450 hp (336 kW) of max output and a 442 lb.-ft. (600 Nm) of peak torque, as derived from a 2.9 liter bi-turbo V6 engine. Getting a top-down version of the Audi RS5 Coupe is out of the question for now, but the good guys at ABT Sportsline are willing to offer a beefed up variant of the Audi S5 Cabriolet.

It is not exactly the RS5 Cabriolet, but ABT Sportsline’s creation is close – the ABT S5 Cabriolet. The most fundamental change made for the S5 Cabriolet is its power rating. As standard, a typical Audi S5 Cabriolet is powered by a 3.0-liter V6 turbo engine that could deliver 354 hp (260 kW) of max output and 500 Nm of peak torque.

That’s nowhere close to the power rating of the dynamic mill inside the RS5 Cabriolet. However, the German tuner’s ABT Engine Control (AEC) made this already powerful engine become more dynamic, with the output and torque levels surging to 425 hp (313 kW) and 550 Nm, respectively. ABT Sportsline is also making this power tweak available for other body variants of the Audi S5.

Audi shows off convertible versions of the A5 and S5 at 2017 Detroit Auto Show

The latest members of the new-generation Audi A5 family have touched down at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show. The new 2018 Audi A5 Cabriolet and S5 Cabriolet are making their North American debut, with an aim to spice up their appeal to the premium vehicle market in the United States.

These new Audi models include the new generation of the A5 and the S5, but without the hard top. Prior to the introduction of these models, Audi’s new generation A5 lineup seemed incomplete. Their arrival signals the availability of open-air driving and riding experience in the A5 family. Both the A5 and S5 Cabriolet are provided with a fully automatic top with one-touch opening function. This soft cloth top could be opened and closed -- with just a touch of a button -- in just 15 seconds and 18 seconds, respectively, at speeds of up to 31 mph. When opened, the top folds into three layers and stores itself in a tray located below the luggage compartment.

Basically, the A5 and S5 Cabriolet are the same, with the difference mainly centered in their engines, thus their on-the-road performances. Thus, the S5 is considered as the steroid-boosted A5 sans the muscles. Acting as the heart of the A5 Cabriolet is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 252 hp of output and 273 lb.-ft. of torque. Paired to a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission, this engine allows the A5 Cabriolet to zoom from zero to 60 mph in 6.0 seconds.

2018 Audi A5 will have a manual version, S5 gets 354 hp engine

A manual transmission arguably brings more excitement to the person behind the wheel. Here’s some good news to those who have been waiting for Audi to release the latest word on the A5 and S5 coupes. Much to our surprise, the Audi A5 is not the only Audi model that will have the six-speed manual sticks. The two-door coupe (A5) and the four-door variant (A4) will both come with manual transmission. If there’s more, these two different variants will also be sharing the same type of engine.

The new S5 model will have the powerful 354 hp engine and is capable of producing up to 369 pound feet of torque. Expect the two Audis to come with larger wheel arches, bolder shoulders and more distinctive outlines. Also, both the S5 and A5 models will be receiving a much wider grille design.

It goes without saying that the new A5 will also arrive in the US. The same model will feature the 252hp, 273lb-ft of torque turbocharged engine in four cylinders. Both 6-speed manual and 7-speed dual clutch transmissions are included in the new line-up.

2018 Audi A5 and S5 Sportback will arrive to the US market by spring

Hatchback enthusiasts are likely to be delighted with the news that Audi will finally be releasing to the U.S. market the 2018 A5 Sportback, which is the five-door version of the A5 coupe. That is not all as the brand will also be releasing the 2018 S5 Sportback. While price details have yet to be officially revealed, Audi says it will release these two models by spring.

There is however at least one difference in that while the U.S. market will indeed be getting a hatchback, it will not have the same powertrain options being made available in Europe. For the models offered in the European market, customers have the chance to select between diesel engines and gas-powered ones. They can even choose between the automatic transmission, which is standard, and the manual offered as an option. However for the U.S., only two engines will be offered and both are paired to automatic transmissions.

Specifically for the A5 Sportback, it will be powered with the same 4-cylinder turbocharged engine inside the A4 Sedan, A5 Coupe, and A5 Convertible. The engine has an output at 252 hp with peak torque coming in at 273 lb.-ft. It is paired to the automatic dual-clutch seven-speed transmission. This allows the A5 Sportback to be almost as fast as its two-door counterpart with acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. Meanwhile the S5 Sportback has the turbocharged V6 engine capable of 354 hp with top torque of 369 lb.-ft., and paired to the standard automatic 8-speed transmission. With this, the S5 Sportback can go from zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds.

Somehow, the new generation of Audi’s A5 family remained incomplete as it lacked a convertible version – until now. This comes as Audi unveiled the 2018 Audi A5 Cabriolet, which allows four occupants to fully enjoy open-top rides in a mid-sized premium model.

Aside from its long wheelbase, the new A5 Cabriolet also features a wide track that measures 1,587 mm (62.5 inches) at the front and 1,568 mm (61.7 in) at the rear. Ride comfort comes courtesy of an updated five-link front suspension and a five-link rear suspension, with adaptive dampers available as an option.

These elements have been integrated into the standard Audi drive select dynamic handling system, which allows drivers to pick between a dynamic or a comfortable drive.

For the third instalment of Iron Man, Tony Stark will still be driving an Audi. This time, it will be an all-electric Audi R8 E-Tron prototype. In the first Iron Man movie in 2008, Stark drove a new R8 while in Iron Man 2, he sat behind the wheel of a R8 Spyder.

There had been rumors that plans to use an Audi R8 E-Tron for the third movie had been scrapped because of concerns related to weight and cost. But this report throws out those speculations. If the R8 E-Tron gets the go signal for it to enter production, it will be equipped with two electric motors that deliver 376 hp and 605 lb-ft of torque. In Iron Man 3, Stark’s girlfriend “Pepper” Potts will also be seen driving the Audi S7.

Senner Tuning has given the Audi S5 Coupé a program that includes modified bumpers, a radiator grill, aluminum optics of the door mirror and the four-pipe exhaust system. What the experts at Senner Tuning AG, Ingelheim set out to do was for the Facelift-S5 to have a wilder character.

Its performance has been improved with the lifting of throttling of the maximal speed as well as the installation of a power converter and performance sport air filters that enable the engine to work at 277 kW 377 hp and 500 Nm torque. It has a stainless steel sport car exhaust system with 100-mm race-looking end pipes.

Besides the new design, the new Audi S5 -- which is offered in three versions: Cabrio, Coupe and Sportback -- comes with a new 3.0-liter TFSI engine delivering 245 kW (333 hp), which replaces the 4.2-liter V8.

Despite its lower fuel consumption, the new Audi S5 has impressive performances. It can sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in just 4.9 seconds and achieve a top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph).

Regarding the design, the updated S5 received new lights, modified body details and new crystal-effect paint finishes. The interior also receives subtle changes. Still, according to Audi, the most important technical updates for the new Audi S5 are quattro drive with the crown-gear center differential and electromechanical power steering. Pricing information and details about Audi’s facelifted A5 and S5 models -- the Coupe, Cabriolet and Sportback models – have been released. These models will start to arrive in dealerships later this year. In the UK, the new A5 and S5 models have a starting price of £25,540 OTR.

Audi will start to take orders starting September and deliveries will begin in December. The A5 Sportback 1.8 TFSI 170PS with a six-speed manual is the cheapest model. It has CO2 emissions of only 136 grams per kilometer. The Cabriolet range has a starting price of £29,450 OTR while the Coupe version of the A5 is priced from £26,490 OTR.

Notably, the 3.2-litre V6 petrol engine in the A5 Coupe and Cabriolet variants was replaced by a new 272PS version of the supercharged 3.0-litre V6 unit. The current 333PS version of this engine, which is used on the S5 Sportback and S5 Cabriolet, will replace the 4.2-litre, naturally aspirated V8 in the S5 Coupe.

In a comprehensive revision for the Audi's top-trim cars, the succeeding S5 will be equipped with a V6 in lieu of a V8 engine when it becomes available in 2009. An insider from the company tells Inside Line that, in the steps of the recently launched Audi S4, the S5 will receive the latest 329-horsepower supercharged V6 engine that is on call to substitute for the old 4.2-liter V8.

The V8 was utilized in the preceding S4 as well other high-line Audi versions. "Not only does this new engine get nearly the same horsepower and more torque," said the Audi insider, "but the fuel efficiency with the V6T improves by 30 percent over the V8." The latest S5 has been, at best, given halfhearted reviews for its power and torque numbers, without mentioning its weight.

The much lighter V6T engine is projected to be a big improvement in those areas. The succeeding Audi S6 will exchange its V10 for an updated twin-turbocharged variant of the 4.2-liter V8.

The diesel-powered A5 Cabriolet 3.0TDI will reach up to 325 hp and 640 Nm as it follows: the first stage upgrades the ECU and the boost pressure of 0.15bar and gives it 280 hp and 585 Nm (EUR 1.198,-). Meanwhile the second stage reaches 300 hp and 600 Nm (EUR 1.298,-), while the 3rd stage, due to special unit-injector elements in addition to changes to the suction pipe, the airflow and the air cooling system this engine reaches 325 hp and 640 Nm for EUR 3.950.

For the A5 2.0TFSI, B&B offers four stages: the first stage offers 250 hp and 400 Nm for only EUR 998; the other stages offer 260 and 295 hp for the 2.0TFSI engine while the stage four brings 310 hp and 465 Nm.

Audi is preparing to make a big splash at the upcoming 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show and has three models for public debuts during the event. These new models are the new Audi S5 Sportback, the new Audi A4 3.0TDI clean diesel quattro and the new Audi A3 1.2 TFSI.

It is believed that the German premium carmaker is planning to bring in as a surprise one or three models too. The AU S5 Sportback, which is obviously an A5 Sportback derivative but a high performaer, is famous for its five-door coupe configuration and its engine -- a 3.0-liter V6 mill fitted with a supercharger.

The supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine in the new Audi S5 Sportback is tuned to deliver up to 245 kW (333 hp) of output and up to 440 Nm of torque between 2,900 rpm and 5,300 rpm. This mill allows the car to go from zero to 100km/h in just 5.4 seconds and achieve a top speed of 250 km/h. Average fuel consumption is a provisional 9.7 liters per 100 km (24.25 mpg US).
