Suzuki to import 2,500 vehicles in U.S. as demand rises after bankruptcy

Due to the sudden rise in demand after the bankruptcy-related announcement of American Suzuki Motor Corp. to discontinue automobile sales in the U.S., it will have to import about 2,500 more vehicles. Still, we have to mention that the company will continue to sell motorcycles, ATVs and marine motors. The U.S. distributor of Suzuki cars told dealerships to make the most of their “one last chance.”

Last Thursday, Freddie Reiss, the company’s chief restructuring officer, confirmed that no more cars are being produced for the U.S. market. It was revealed earlier this month that the November sales of American Suzuki increased by 22% to 2,224 units.

According to dealers, sales grew in December, mostly due to huge incentives and a seven-year warranty program. But Reiss said that even with the surge in sales, the automaker still won’t be able to justify staying in the U.S.

Suzuki and Mitsubishi to stop selling diesel cars in Europe

The diesel exodus in Europe continues. Years ago, carmakers have been in a sweeping race to offer more diesel-powered vehicles in the continent, which hunger for such transports seems unending. But now, it looks like carmakers – including Japanese company Suzuki and Mitsubishi Motors -- are also in a race, but this time, it is to exit from the shrinking market in Europe before it becomes too late.

Yes, Suzuki and Mitsubishi Motors are the latest of the carmakers that are saying goodbye to their diesel-powered offerings in Europe, in light of the growing dislike for such engine technology in the region. They will be joining fellow Japanese carmaker Nissan and Toyota in getting rid of diesel vehicles from their European lineup.

Interestingly, Mitsubishi Motors’ decision isn't really surprising as 34 percent of the carmaker is owned by Nissan and the company is also a part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. Mitsubishi has already halted sales of new diesel car in the United Kingdom. It has also stopped sales of diesel-powered cars in Germany. The only diesel vehicles that would remain in Mitsubishi’s lineup are its pickups, but that would only be for the short term. Diesel offerings accounted up to 30 percent of the Japanese carmaker’s sales in Europe in 2017.

Suzuki will bring three Xbee concepts at 2017 Tokyo Motor Show

Suzuki will be introducing a range of new concepts for the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show and one of them is the Xbee (or Crossbi as how you’re supposed to say it) that bears similarities with Toyota’s FJ Cruiser. From the outside, the tiny Xbee (or Suzuki’s own mini version of the FJ Cruiser) seems to have drawn its design inspiration from the Hustler minivan J Style II concept from 2015.

For this year, Suzuki’s Spacia tall minivans will be joining the Xbee on stage at 2017 Tokyo Motor Show. The Xbee will be arriving there in black Street Adventure trim along with Xbee’s beige colored Outdoor Adventure. There’s also one variant that’s yellow with a black colored roof.

According to the Japanese car manufacturer, the crossover is designed primarily for different people with different lifestyles. The Xbee is perfect for those who love driving close to nature or around the city. The small crossover wagon features SUV-like bumpers with plastic protectors to further enhance the adventurous image it wants to convey. With its ample space, the Xbee not only functions like an SUV but is also fun and easy to drive.

Suzuki e-Survivor Concept to debut at 2017 Tokyo Motor Show

Suzuki will once again drive us far ahead into the future at the upcoming 2017 Tokyo Motor Show. Collectively known as the future of the compact sport utility truck, the e-Survivor Concept will be featuring a two-seat open cockpit with hints of Jimny and Vitara’s styling cues. While the truck-like ladder body frame is quite similar to a Jeep Wrangler at first impression, the e-Survivor also has some very unique designs by incorporating glowing wheels and clear view side doors into the concept.

The images released ahead of the premiere show us what appears to be an off-road capable SUV with highly sufficient ground clearance and wheels that extend more than the actual width of the vehicle. Think of the old X-90 and Samurai if there are no other ways to describe it. Sitting on a small wheelbase of 2300mm, it is said to come with measurements of 3460mm long, 1645mm wide and 1655 tall. There isn’t a lot to say yet except it does have an integrated electric propulsion and all-wheel drive system with individual hub motors on each wheel. It is likely to employ lightweight materials and show some excellent approach and departure angles.

Since Suzuki’s latest off-road concept should also have the most futuristic cabin design, the e-Survivor is equipped with a full-width digital display that sits just below the windshield. If you think that’s enough, there is one more at the dashboard facing the passenger side, another one at the steering wheel and a couple more could be found between the seats along the center. Both the entertainment and navigation system use a spherical display which is located on top of the center console. The built-in climate control vents instead are mounted on the seats. All said, the specs of the battery and power output up to now remain a mystery.

Quite a number of people are already eagerly awaiting the launch of the fourth generation of the Suzuki Jimny by Japanese carmaker Suzuki. It has been nearly 20 years since Suzuki released the third generation of the Jimny (1998), and everyone is keeping their eyes open as to when an all-new iteration would make its debut.

However, it seems that we won't have to wait longer for the arrival of the next-gen Jimny, as the Japanese carmaker itself included images of the all-new model – believed to be up for the 2018 or 2019 model year – in a company presentation that details its product roadmap. Someone who was in attendance during the company presentation was able to get some shots of the presented images, and ultimately these were leaked online to be feasted on.

The leaked images came a few days after spy pictures of the new Suzuki Jimny surfaced. Although the Suzuki Jimny, as spied, was heavily camouflaged, it was still able to reveal quite a number of details. It has adopted a more upright boxy design – something that has become rare among current SUVs, save for the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and some Jeep offerings like the Wrangler and Defender. It is even safe to say that the upright boxy design of the new Suzuki Jimny makes it a smaller version of the Mercedes G-Class or the Jeep Wrangler.

Following the introduction of the new generation Suzuki Swift in Europe for the 2017 model year, the hatchback from the Japanese company managed to score fairly in the latest round of safety tests conducted by the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP). In fact, a standard version of the 2017 Suzuki Swift earned a 3-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, while a variant equipped with the optional safety pack equipped version received a 4-star rating from the assessment program.

In the area of Adult Occupant protection, the 2017 Suzuki Swift scored 83 percent. According to Euro NCAP, the Swift’s passenger compartment remained stable in the frontal offset test, offering good protection of the knees and femurs for the driver and passenger.

Meanwhile, the full-width rigid barrier test showed that the Swift offers marginal chest protection, although protection of critical body areas was considered by Euro NCAP as good or adequate. In case of rear-end collision, Euro NCAP noted that the front seats and head restraints offer good protection against whiplash injuries while the rear seats provide poor protection.

British startup Zenos, which entered bankruptcy administration earlier this year is now back in business. The Norfolk-based sports car manufacturer was bought by a consortium of investors headed by AC Cars, another British brand. The consortium has acquired all of its assets including Zenos’ intellectual property, ten remaining cars assembled, as well as its Wymondham headquarters.

Zenos Cars was founded in 2012 by Ansar Ali and Mark Edwards ---both were formerly connected to two famous British automotive companies--Lotus and Caterham. The British automaker started out at Hethel Engineering Center with a small lineup of lightweight carbon-fiber sports cars including the Zenos E10. Using Ford EcoBoost for its engine, the Zenos E10 sports car is also made with an aluminum and composite chassis. Eventually, the company started experiencing financial setbacks due to high production cost.

AC Cars Limited meanwhile continues to manufacture the Cobra also known as the MkVI roadster or Shelby Cobra. Only recently, the British brand increased its lineup by building a right hand drive version of the iconic sports car.

Ford and Toyota have come together in the hopes of standardizing their vehicles’ smartphone integration system. The open-source platform is said to compete with Google Android Auto and Apple CarPlay which will be made under SDL agreement (or SmartDeviceLink Consortium to be exact). Mazda, Subaru, Suzuki and PSA Group have also joined the partnership.

Through this agreement, the automakers wish to create software that will enable them to connect the owner’s smart device to their own infotainment systems. In the meantime, they will be using Ford’s APPLINK software to develop the standardized platform so they can also take advantage of the apps currently in there such as AccuWeather, iHeartRadio, Spotify and Pandora.

APPLINK comes with many other apps and will probably include more ---just like the popular Waze app for navigation. The members strongly believe that this is their answer to Google and Apple integration. All these years, these two tech giants have dominated the scene when it comes to running your infotainment system. Ford’s software on the other hand is currently installed in more than five million vehicles.

Remember Zenos Cars, a British carmaker that specializes in designing and building lightweight and high-performance sports cars? If you are wondering how the company is faring with their E10 lightweight car, Zenos hasn’t been doing well and is, in fact, in dire financial straits. The severity of its financial problems has the company compelled to enter into administration, a process that is similar to bankruptcy protection.

According to a notice on the carmaker’s Web site, the company was placed under administration on January 16, 2017, with Irvin Milton Cohen and Gary Paul Shankland -- both of Begbies Traynor (London) LLP -- being appointed as Joint Administrators. Cohen and Shankland are now acting as Zenos agents without any personal liability. As Joint Administrators, Cohen and Shankland are now in charge of the management of the carmaker’s affairs, business and property.

Zenos’ humble beginnings can be traced to May 2012, when it was founded by Ansar Ali and Mark Edwards. Edwards and Ali were both employees at Lotus, and then at Caterham. However, Ali left Zenos in 2015 and joined the ranks at McLaren – although he remained a shareholder. According to his LinkedIn account, Ali is now the managing director for McLaren Special Operations (MSO) at McLaren Automotive. Edwards is currently Zenos’ chief executive, although his management powers are now gone.

In creating the Baleno, Suzuki knew that it had to raise the bar in order to meet the continuous growing need of the consumers. Further, the company knew that if it was to succeed, it needed to hold nothing back. Chief engineer Kunihiko Ito explained that the company wanted to develop what they believed to be the ideal hatchback.

For one, according to Ito, it had to include every element that one expects from a compact car, namely: comfort, design, fuel efficiency, manoeuvrability, utility, and most importantly, superior driving performance.

In addition, it had to show a sophisticated, grown-up, and elegant character without compromising other features, Ito concludes.

A Dutch appeals court has declared the bankruptcy of financially troubled Dutch supercar maker Spyker "null and void with retrospective effect." A local court placed the company in bankruptcy on Dec. 18 by a Dutch court after the bridging funds promised during creditor protection failed to materialize. Spyker only received the funds 11 days later and then filed an appeal on bankruptcy ruling.

The nullification of the bankruptcy declaration means that Spyker is now back under the protection of the "moratorium of payment," which is similar to the Chapter 11 protection in the United States.

With the matter resolved, Spyker chief executive Victor Muller said he plans to push ahead with development of the B6 Venator entry-level luxury sports car as well as merge with a US-based maker of high performance electric aircraft.

A Dutch district court has declared Spyker NV bankrupt, placing the financially troubled supercar maker under court-supervised receivership. Also placed under receivership are Spyker’s wholly owned subsidiaries Spyker Automobielen and Spyker Events & Branding. The court-appointed administrator for Spyker is now tasked to guide the carmaker through bankruptcy proceedings, the Dutch company said in a statement.

The carmaker said that the court ruled to declare it bankruptcy after a planned bridge funding failed to reach it on time. Spyker founder and chief executive Victor Muller has vowed to revive the company and this time around, he said that his company’s bankruptcy “is not the end.”

He remarked that he will “relentlessly endeavor” to revive Spyker as soon as practically possible. He said that once Spyker is revived, it would merge with a high performance electric aircraft maker and develop electric vehicles with “disruptive sustainable technology.”

Suzuki's manufacturing site in Esztergom, Hungary will continue operating at reduced capacity for the rest of 2014, according to a report by Napi Gazdasag newspaper. The plant has been operating at one shift – instead of the usual two -- after stopping production of the Splash small minivan and the SX4 small SUV. The site is also preparing for the output of the new Vitara from early 2015, Ruska told the paper.

Suzuki unveiled the Vitara subcompact SUV at the 2014 Paris auto show and will commence its sales in Europe early 2015. Despite the reduced capacity, Suzuki has no plans to implement the layoffs and intends to operate back to two shifts once plant starts production of the new Vitara.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration disclosed that spiders attracted by gasoline vapors as well as weaving webs blocking a hose to vent those vapors have prompted Suzuki Motor of America to recall around 19,000 MY2012-2013 Kizashi midsize sedans.

NHTSA said that blocked air flow in the Kizashi‘s evaporative emissions system can result to negative pressure in the fuel tank, possibly leading to cracks that may cause leaks, thereby increasing risk of a fire. This issue is similar to the one experienced in Mazda6.

Mazda has called back the Mazda6 twice since 2011 due to spiders creating webs in ventilation hoses. The carmaker has not received reports of crashes or injuries tied to the issue, Suzuki told NHTSA.
