Confirmed: Bentley will offer plugin hybrids for every model

Bentley once again confirmed its plans to push PHEV into their future lineups. As a matter of fact, the Bentayga SUV will be the first to have the plugin hybrid technology, which will also be using a V6 engine. Next on the line would be none other than the new generation Bentley Continental GT. And there’s more to come.

During a recent press interview with Automotive News, Wolfgang Duerheimer reiterated the fact that plugin hybrids no longer serve as “temporary bridge technology”. Instead, it now offers the best features of both cars with internal combustion engine as well as those of electric powered vehicles.

The CEO also considers the fact that the upcoming plugin variants would be their answer to the consumers who want to use their cars to go to places where gasoline and diesel engines would no longer be allowed.

Bentley expects its entry-level V8 Continental GT to boost GT production back to its peak of 5000 units. Because of the recession, the output had been halved. Set to go on sale in 2012, the V8 is targeted at a new group of buyers, especially in the US, where V8s are popular.

The Continental GT was showcased at the Paris motor show earlier this month. It will cost from £135,760, an increase of almost £10,000 on the current car's £126,500 sticker price. Bentley is hoping that this new model will continue the success of the 2003 original.

At first glance, they may appear similar but the new Conti has been given several major updates, including a new engine and a yet undisclosed 4.0-litre direct injection V8.

Bentley announced today that the introduction of the new 2011 Continental GT at this year’s Paris Motor Show was a success and the new coupe received critical acclaim. The visitors were impressed by the new design of the Continental GT and all the important automotive magazines had only positive feedback.

Honestly to tell you we were impressed two by the new Continental GT, because it refines a little the design of the old model. The 2011 Continental GT is powered by a 6.0-liter W12 engine delivering 575PS (567bhp/423kW) and 700Nm (516lb ft) of torque and uses a new Quickshift transmission which enables double downshifts.

However, Bentley announced that it will introduce a smaller V8 engine which could use the dual-clutch Audi S Tronic transmission. Powered by the W12 engine, the car hits 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds), 100mph in 10.2 seconds (0-160km/h in 10.2 seconds) and has a top speed of 198 mph (318km/h).

Bentley wants its new V8-powered Continental GT variant to feature a dual-clutch transmission that Audi has named the S Tronic. For now, Bentley’s engineers are conducting engineering studies on the feasibility of packaging the S Tronic into the Continental’s transmission tunnel.

The engineers are confronted with having to re-engineer and build the GT’s underbody and running gear to accept the S Tronic, which is shaped differently from the six-speed ZF the W12 GT will use.

The dual-clutch transmission offers a sportier driving experience, which is something that Bentley thinks will appeal to the new group of buyers targeted to purchase the V8 GT. According to Bentley’s new sales and marketing boss Alasdair Stewart, the V8 will draw in a “new audience.”

It's true that the new Supersports Convertible is the new hallmark of the model range but Bentley made a few revisions to its Continental line for the 2011 model year. First, the 6.0-liter W-12 underhood is now a flexible-fuel engine.

All models (even the Superports) can run on ethanol blends up to E85. Running E85 doesn't do anything for the power and torque but carbon dioxide emissions are reportedly cut by as much as 70%. The Continental is available in six new colors: Citric, White Satin, Kingfisher, Magenta, Orange Flame, and St. James Red Pearl.

The new Continental reportedly would continue to utilize Volkswagen group technologies. While speaking at the launch of the new Mulsanne, Bentley boss Franz-Josef Pfaegen revealed that customers actually don't want to change the Continental as it is widely perceived to be Bentley's Porsche 911.

Pfaegen also said that the company will build the Bentley in-house but that it will continue to use VW components. Continued after the jump! Separately, Bentley engineering boss Ulrich Eichhorn had said that the company is looking to reduce the next Continental's weight but won't be akin to the Elise.

Today, we know that celebrity-owned cars aren’t really the most affordable second hand models we could get. But at the same, there are a lot of fans out there who are willing to do anything to get up close with their idols, and for some of them, that means spending more. Wouldn’t you want to buy a car once raced or driven by Michael Fassbender? Well, if you could afford it, why not?

In fact, many celebrity-owned cars have been put up for sale before, including Daniel Craig’s one-off Aston Martin Vanquish. There’s also Elvis Presley’s 1971 Mercedes Benz 280SEL. That’s not all. Even Russia’s leader Putin’s 1995 Mercedes Benz S Class S600 Pullman Guard was once up for sale with a $1,351,740 price tag. We assume this had been purchased already since the ad for it is gone.

But at the time of this writing, there is one high-profile car that really caught our attention. This car had been owned by reigning Formula 1 champion, Lewis Hamilton. It is a 2015 Mercedes-Maybach S600 luxury sedan and its ad is currently up on British used cars listings site, autotrader.co.uk.
