BMW’s European customers who are looking forward to have a new range extender version of the 2019 BMW i3 (BMW i3 REx) will have to bear a bad news from the German premium carmaker. They won't be able to get a new one as BMW will stop producing and offering the i3 REx in Europe starting 2019 model year.
It should be noted that BMW still listed the i3 REx in the 2019 model year specification, although its Web site aren’t offering any information about the ranger extender version anymore. This has led to confusion, with many still assuming that that REx version of the i3 would still be available for the upcoming model year. To an extent, there is some truth to this, since while the 2019 BMW i3 REx will be discontinued in Europe, it will still be offered in the United States.
At first glance, it may seem odd that BMW would discontinue the range extender version of the i3, after all the REx had accounted for 60 percent of the model’s sales, despite being around £,3150 more expensive than a standard i3, which is pure electric. However, the true appeal of the i3 REx isn't really the combination of electric motors and a range-extending two-cylinder 650-cc petrol engine to provide additional charge to the drive battery. BMW fans may be surprised with what the car manufacturer’s boss Robert Irlinger said in a recent interview with Autocar during a recent media meeting. And this is the fact that the BMW i3 and BMW i8 will not necessarily be receiving direct replacements.
So what should fans expect instead? For the i8, the automaker is still deciding on what to do with it, though they did say that there definitely is a market for new types of sports cars. But since there is no concrete plan for this yet, they do not have a name for it just yet and that it is still under discussion.
In other words, the company plans to create vehicles that will cater to a particular market - this could be as small as a niche market. A few weeks before BMW is slated to reveal its latest offerings at the upcoming 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, the German premium carmaker is introducing the newest iteration of its BMW i3 electric city car. The latest tweaks and updates on the 2018 BMW i3 might not be a surprise, but BMW went along and dropped a bombshell as it introduced the sportier performance version of the i3, the all-new BMW i3s.
Compared to the new i3, the new i3s is lower by 10 mm, thanks to a sports suspension. Its tracks are also wider by 40 mm, as highlighted by the broader high-gloss black wheel arch moldings. The new i3s rides – as standard – on exclusive 20- inch light-alloy wheels in bicolor double-spoke design.
Both the new i3 and the new i3s feature -- as standard -- full-LED headlights that employ LED units for low beam, high beam and daytime running lights. The five-door BMW i3 is the Bavarian automaker’s first zero-emissions vehicle to be mass-produced. First unveiled in 2013, this electric vehicle has been recognized worldwide for its fuel efficiency and is ranked as the third best-selling car in the world from 2014 to 2016.

The North American unit of German premium carmaker BMW is recalling around 19,000 units of its BMW i3 electric vehicle because of the risk of fuel leak. You may ask, “An electric vehicle having a fuel leak?” Yes, EVs aren’t supposed to suffer from a fuel leak, simply because they get their energy from a battery pack, not from gasoline or petrol. That would be the case for a typical EV.
However, a fuel leak may occur in the case of EVs with a complementary internal combustion engine that serves its purpose to extend the distance the unit could travel. Simply put, once the battery pack runs out of energy, the gasoline engine kicks in as the EV seamlessly shifts from electric power to fossil fuel, thereby serving as a range extender.
While the BMW i3 is a pure electric vehicle, there are customers who want to travel farther distances than its battery power could provide. Thus, the German premium carmaker is also offering a version of the BMW i3 that is fitted with a small range-extending gasoline engine. The future is finally bright for BMW i3 after its project manager confirmed the coming of a second-generation model. Heinrich Schwackhoefer spoke to Automotive News lately and expressed his positive thoughts regarding the EV’s potential future. Schwackhoefer believes that the sub-brand is stable and that we can expect the i3 to have its successor.
We think the only problem is when will that be? Since the project manager cannot say anything more, our guess would be in 4 or 5 years? Or, maybe BMW wants to keep silent about the second-gen’s launch since it has only been only three years after it went on sale.

As much as these EVs are a cheaper alternative to fuel powered vehicles, there are also issues that are yet to be solved by its engineers. The release of BMW’s electric vehicle, the i3, was very much anticipated way back in 2014. The i3 offers an innovative interior as well as a strong performance. It is mostly made of carbon-fiber and aluminum structure and has a very good handling due to its low center of gravity. During the first quarter of the year, BMW has only sold a total of 5,128 units of the i3 and i8 combined around the world. This demonstrates a sales decline of about 23% from the same period last year. For the full-year of 2015, the German carmaker sold 24,057 units of the i3 and 5,456 units of the i8.
The slump can widely be attributed to the growing competition and relatively expensive price tag. For a short mile range of about 80 miles, the i3 already has a base price of $42,400. This can be improved up to 160 miles with a two-cylinder engine for an additional $3,850.
Moreover, the BMW i3 is said to not be able to live up to its looks and environmental friendliness. The Los Angeles Police Department received a BMW i3 electric vehicle as a loan from BMW i. This marks the first test of the i3 at an authority fleet in the United States. Donning the LAPD black and white livery, with rooftop light-bar, the BMW i3 will be loan-tested for 12 months, during which the EV may also be featured at public events around Los Angeles.
LAPD can take full advantage of the i3’s compact size and agility, especially during its law enforcement runs. These benefits come because of the i3’s lightweight Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic construction.

Norbert Reithofer, chief executive of BMW Group, views political initiatives in several of its key markets as important in helping boost sales of its i3 electric compact car. He remarked that when a government offers tangible incentives for e-mobility, the registration figures for model soar.
He cited the situation in Norway, which is offering a charging structure that allows parking and charging of EVs for free – resulting to sales of around 2,000 i3s in the country in 2014. The Norwegian government also levies no sales or registration tax on EVs.

If you think that a BMW i3 is a rare sight in Germany, a charging station that caters to the carmaker’s electric offers is even rarer. During a recent four-day test drive, which came a year after BMW launched the i3, the EV managed to cruise around 200km (125 miles) in Berlin, which one of the four cities picked by the German government to promote electric cars.
By the time the i3's battery indicator showed that it is running its last 10km, the EV had to be driven into one of the around 500 charging stations in Berlin. But that is also when the problem started to show up. The i3 visited three charging stations to recharge, but, two of them weren't part of BMW's payment system.
The third one was in a shopping mall, but didn't work. The situation underscores the current hurdle that electric driving has to surpass to entice people to embrace this kind of mobility. Although it sounds kind of stupid, Japanese tuning company Eve.Ryn decided that the BMW i3 needs some design upgrades and decided to improve the German electric car. The exterior changes are quite consistent and include a new front bumper with carbon fiber inserts and large air inlets, flared wheel arches, new side sills, a rear roof spoiler as well as a new rear bumper with integrated air diffuser.
In addition, a new set of wheels was installed, which make the vehicle look even sportier. There are no details regarding any performance upgrades, which means we will find the same electric motor that produces 170 hp (125 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque.

BMW has launched a smart charging app in the United States that determines which hours electricity is cheapest, helping BMW i3 owners save money on home-charging their units. According to BMW, the app is available on both Android and Apple devices and comes embedded into the iRemote App, which sends information about i3 temperature, status, charging times and related costs.
BMW will initially offer the app only to Electronauts -- its i3 early adopter program in the United States that started operations in 2012. BMW’s smart charging app employs a direct connection to a national energy-rate database that is hosted by BMW partner Genability.
According to the carmaker, the smart charging app enables i3 owners to adjust their charging strategy even weeks in advance. BMW Group has hiked output of the i3 electric car by 43 percent to be able to meet high demand for the vehicle. In recent weeks, BMW has hiked daily production from 70 vehicles to 100 units at its Leipzig site in Germany, according to production chief Harald Krueger, who noted that the carmaker has already produced over 5,000 i3s since the start of 2014.

BMW Group is constructing a second production hall at a carbon-fiber site it jointly operates with SGL Carbon SE as it tries to cater to growing demand for its i-subbrand models. The carmaker also plans to use carbon fiber on other vehicles in its lineup. Handelsblatt has reported that BMW is planning to use carbon fiber for its planned new 7 series that will be rolled out by the end of 2014. High demand for the BMW i3 has already resulted to a long list of orders for the battery powered compact model around the world, with buyers having to wait as long as six months before they could receive their own units. According to BMW sales chief Ian Robertson, they have already received around 11,000 orders globally for the i3, with 1,200 taken from the United States.
Buyers face a six-month wait to receive the electric car because of high demand. BMW started selling the i3 in November 2013 and will commence selling it in the US in May, in Asian markets -- including China and Japan -- by the middle of 2014. Robertson told Automobilwoche that around 80 percent of i3 sales were to customers from other brands or to those who had yet to own cars.
