Investment analyst foresees Tesla Model 3 market domination over BMW 3 Series

Social Capital CEO Chamath Palihapitiya has presumed the entire (BMW 3 Series) business will “go to zero” judging by the number of pre-orders made for Tesla Model 3. Appearing on CNBC’s Fast Money Half Time Report, Palihapitiya claims that orders for the 3 Series are already being hit significantly by Tesla’s more affordable EV, adding that people do not know anything about the level of demand surrounding the popular Tesla Model. Adam Jones of Morgan Stanley has opposed the claim, citing both political and international contexts to the businesses.

Palihapitiya is a former member of Facebook’s senior executive team and has just attended the 2017 Delivering Alpha conference in New York last September 12. Earlier this week, the investment analyst pointed out there is not one person in his right mind who would choose BMW 3 Series over Tesla.

Despite this, BMW i3 has received a makeover in the hopes of competing with Tesla’s long ranging, lower priced sedan. The revamped i3 will be featuring a host of optional driver assistance technologies including adaptive cruise control though we know it won’t make the range any better. Like before, the i3 can only run up to 160 kilometers per charge plus it comes with an extended range of about 290 km. In contrast, the Tesla Model 3 boasts a range that goes somewhere between 350km and 500km.

Tesla working on its third model line, a rival to the Bmw 3-Series

Tesla is currently working on its third model line, which is expected to compete with the BMW 3-series. Franz von Holzhausen, Tesla’s chief designer, said that the first of the new models, may have its launch as early as 2015. Tesla has begun deliveries of the new Model S saloon. It’s likely that the Model S-based Model X SUV will enter production in late 2013.

Von Holzhausen said that the third model will continue to bring down the price point as quickly as possible. He said that the new entry-level car has a target price of $30,000. Von Holzhausen said that the new model’s styling is more distinctive than the relatively conventional Model S. He said that the company will become more experimental as the brand is developed.

He said that the cars need “some personality.” The Tesla platform, which places the batteries in a 10cm-high stack under the cabin floor, provides a lot of flexibility, says Autocar. Von Holzhausen said that there are many ways to use the platform. He said that there’s a time and place for the company to build something around a pick-up. He added that torque of an electric motor will be perfectly suited for this market.

BMW wants no bad media reviews for the all-new 3-Series G20

BMW regards the latest generation – the seventh – of the 3 Series as its pride. After all, the 3 Series represents one of the cores of its sales, being one of the best-selling models at BMW. Thus, it is only natural for the company or its people to react if bad things are to be said about the all-new 3 Series.

Klaus Frohlich, the head of development at BMW, seemingly has been tired of hearing auto journalist and other people comparing the fifth and sixth generation of the 3 Series to the fourth generation. The fourth-gen 3 Series – with the codename E46 – has been regarded as the last true 3 Series, bearing the attributes that defined this model such as sportiness and dynamism as well as luxury and elegance. Many consider the generations after the E46 – like the E90 and the F30 – as not living up to the promise of the 3 Series.

Now, Frohlich is having none any of the complaints saying that the latest generation of the BMW 3 Series – the G20 – as inferior to the 3 Series E46. These bad reviews would be injustice to BMW’s development team headed by Frohlich. After all, the bad reviews on the E90 and F30 generations were what prompted BMW to make the newest generation much better, even surpassing the E46 models. In its press release for the all-new 3 Series, the carmaker said that the all signature characteristics of a BMW -- modern design, agile handling, exceptional efficiency and innovative features -- have been raised to a higher level.

Patent Images of BMW 3 Series Wagon (G21) show up in design registration in Brazil

BMW is just fresh from unveiling the all-new seventh generation of the BMW 3 Series Sedan (G20) at the 2018 Paris Motor Show. Bringing the promise of being much better than its predecessor, the all-new 3 Series Sedan is poised to meet the expectations. Nonetheless, BMW isn't finished yet, as the German carmaker will also offer wagon variant of the 3 Series.

As to how the new BMW 3 Series Wagon (G21) would look like, perhaps a design registration with Brazil's Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Industrial could help. The images may not be as sharp as those released by BMW for the 3 Series Sedan, but they offer a good glimpse of the exterior of the upcoming 3 Series Wagon.

From the front end to the B-pillar, the BMW 3 Series Wagon looks identical to the 3 Series Sedan. The front end of the upcoming 3 Series Wagon is likewise marked by the large BMW kidney grille framed by a single surround. In addition, the bonnet of the 3 Series Wagon features four contour lines all flowing towards the BMW kidney grille.

The charm of Tesla Motors’ vehicle offering lies in the fact that they offer a high level of performance with zero emissions. However, Tesla also wants its cars to be remembered as some of the safest vehicles in the automotive world. Just recently, Tesla is claiming that its Model 3 midsize sedan offers the best chance for passengers to avoid serious injury in case of a collision.

On its Twitter account, Tesla said its Model 3 boasts of having the lowest probability of causing injury of all cars that the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration has ever tested. Tesla noted that the Model 3 managed to receive a perfect 5-star safety rating in all categories – including sub-categories. Tesla had previously boasted that they expect the new Model 3 to have the lowest probability of personal injury than any other car.

The carmaker went on to say that the Tesla Model S electric sedan and the Tesla Model X electric crossover ranked second and third, respectively, on the list of cars with lowest probability of causing passenger injury as tested by the NHTSA.

We all saw this coming, but the all-new seventh generation of the 2019 BMW 3-Series (G20) is virtually stunning in several elements as it was unveiled in metal at the 2018 Paris Motor Show.

It boasts of a new generation of design, engines and suspensions as well as modern technologies. Available in three equipment lines or variants -- Sport Line, Luxury Line and M Sport -- the new BMW 3 Series luxury sports sedan certainly lives up to expectations.

Interested customers only have to wait for a few months until March 2019 to get behind the wheel of the new BMW 3 Series (G20). But for clients eyeing the new BMW M3, the wait is much longer as the performance-laden luxury sedan isn't up for grabs at the same as the 3 Series. Some are willing to wait; for those who cannot, the carmaker is introducing a new extensive range of M Performance Parts as Original BMW Accessories for the new 3 Series.

These new BMW M Performance Parts just for the new 3 Series – comprising no fewer than 10 components -- won't actually make the premium class sedan much faster or quicker as they entail no modifications with regards to its power and closely related components. Customers would have to wait for such modifications to happen with the new M3. However, the range of M Performance Parts for the 3 Series can make the limousine feel sportier, more dynamic and more responsive.

The secret of these new BMW M Performance Parts – available in high-gloss black or carbon fiber -- lies on the fact they were directly inspired by and derived from motor racing. They include components not just for the exterior and the interior, but also for the drive system and chassis engineering of the 3 Series. They are designed, for instance, to augment the car’s lightweight construction concept or make the 3 Series more aerodynamic. Likewise, these components can make the 3 Series look more dynamic and sportier.

Since electric vehicles are becoming more popular, and are also becoming more viable for long distance trips, car enthusiasts would try and push the limits of what their cars are capable of on a single charge. Two men in Denver decided to take out the Tesla Model 3 over the weekend to drive it, and after 32 hours, they celebrated victory. However, that’s all their car can do.

EV aficionados have this term they use, “hypermiling”, to describe the idea of them getting the most juice out of their car’s battery, though efficient driving on a forgiving route. The guys we mentioned earlier were Sean M. Mitchell and Erik Strait, who set out on Friday to firmly beat the previous hypermiling record on a closed loop near the Denver Airport. The loop was about a mile in distance, and featured an elevation change of only 10 feet, while the two drove at speeds between 20 and 30 miles per hour.

Tesla rates the Model 3’s range between 220 and 310 miles on a single charge, but the two guys hoped they could reach 600 miles. So what they did was they live-streamed their circuitous journey on Youtube, interacted with those who commented, caught Chipotle burritos in a fishing net and were able to go past their goal 32 hours later.

After going through a number of tests in Germany, the BMW 320d was deemed to be fully compliant will all legal requirements by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). The extensive test-bench and road tests were a result of accusations back in December 2017 from environmental lobby group Deutsche Umwelthilfe (Environmental Action Germany).

Klaus Frohlich, BMW board member said that their vehicles are not manipulated and comply with the country’s legal requirements. He then says that the public and the policymakers should rely on the fact that their diesel engines are clean. But he also emphasized that its customers as well as their employees can also rely on this guarantee.

Furthermore, after going through tests, the KBA did not find that BMW was involved in any illegal activities or technical provisions of any kind that influenced the test results for recording emissions. In other words, the BMW 320d had no defeat device installed to it. In fact, the KBA’s tests were pretty much the same as what other authorities worldwide have proven repeatedly after several tests.

Tesla has just updated their online configurator for the Model 3, adding a number of new updates, and it seems like the $35,000 base model will arrive sooner than we expect to see it.

A couple of months back, we heard about all the issues regarding the Model 3’s production. And finally, Tesla is starting to deliver some of these vehicles. As a matter of fact, the automaker has already added the $35,000 base model as an option for “Early 2018” in their website. But knowing Tesla, early 2018 probably really means mid to late 2018 - though it still got us a bit excited.

If you are one of the lucky ones that received the invite to configure your Model 3, you would be able to get it for $49,000 instead of $44,000. But why, you ask? That is because Tesla is giving it a Long Range battery that costs $9,000. The Premium Upgrades package is also currently mandatory, adding another $5,000 to its price tag.

Two months ago, there were reports about Tesla Semi sales as it skyrocketed just a few weeks after being launched in the United States. Huge companies like J.B. Hunt, Walmart, Loblaws and Meijer had placed their reservations on the all-electric truck, as well as some other international companies. Also, the largest reservation that has been made was for 125 units (by none other than UPS).

Furthermore, Tesla received a total of around 140 pre-orders from the companies that ordered from them. And now, that number has probably doubled or tripled. The electric car maker promises to begin deliveries for the first batch of orders starting in late 2019.

Other companies that made reservations late last year include Sysco, DHL Supply Chain, Mecca & Son Trucking, Fercam, European based Girteka Logistics, Ryder and some others.

There is a lot going on within Aston Martin. Its CEO, Andy Palmer, has a full plate, to say the least. Despite that, he recently just announced that they are planning to deliver a high performance electric vehicle that could go up against the next generation Tesla Roadster.

Palmer also says that it is possible for them to develop an electric vehicle that is smaller and faster than the Vantage, when Auto Express asked about that matter. Furthermore, when asked about challenges involved in making electric vehicles, such as the battery, Palmer responds by saying that Aston Martin is an expert when it comes to making electric vehicles, and the main factors that they need to take account of include elements like “weight, aerodynamic drag, and rolling resistance”.

He then added that developing electric vehicles will put them at an advantage over other brands like Tesla that promises a lightweight roadster. He reasons that it would be because of the fact that they are already masters at building these components.

Niels van Roij Design has revealed a number of new renderings of the company’s upcoming shooting brake. Inspired by the Tesla Model S, this one-off model is scheduled to be unveiled this March 2018. In addition to having a stylish design, this model was developed to effortlessly match up with the Model S. Thus while the front fascia is indeed recognizable, many of the changes can be observed at the back of the A-pillar.

The most obvious change on this model would have to be the elongated roof. Its rear section meanwhile has been fitted with a tailgate-mounted spoiler. Further this model comes with new bodywork and it even has “kick-ups in the glass area.” It also uses chrome generously in its trim.

The company disclosed that it has been doing significant work on the shooting brake for quite some time. In fact according to Van Roij, the company did some design research even before it worked on the first sketches. Once the sketches were finished, the company then built on three various “design propositions” having a total of 16 different design themes. However the company knew it was also important to put emphasis on benchmarking this model versus other high-end one-off models and even high-end performance wagons.

Since Elon Musk revealed the Tesla Semi a couple of weeks ago, the automaker began receiving a number of pre-orders of the all-electric truck. Many of these orders come from large American companies including J.B. Hunt, Walmart, Loblaws and Meijer. According to Reuters, the all-electric automaker has already collected a total of 116 reservations, and orders continue to increase daily.

And as of the other day, there were already 140 pre-orders from 11 different companies, according to Jalopnik. Other companies that are part of the list of include Italian company Fercam, European based Girteka Logistics, Ryder, DHL Supply Chain, Fortigo Freight Services, Mecca & Son Trucking, Flexport.com and some others.

Anheuser-Busch had just pre-ordered the most number of Tesla Semis to date. If our sources are correct, they pre-ordered at least 40 units of the all-electric trucks, which they will use for the transport of goods such as those from Budweiser.

Truth be told, the Tesla Model 3 doesn’t have a complete software and user interface when the California-based electric carmaker commences deliveries in July. However, this didn’t worry Tesla Model 3 owners, as they know that Tesla will sooner or later keep its four-door electric sedan to date through over-the-air updates. Now, the latest software update endows the EV with a number of new – yet very basic – features.

The latest update for the Model 3 has been eagerly anticipated as Tesla has been updating its software since commencing deliveries for the electric sedan. When it was first rolled out, the Model 3 didn’t have features that are usually installed or fitted as standard even in the most basic vehicles, including affordable ones. The software for the Model 3 is basically incomplete, so it didn’t have those basic features.

For instance, the latest software update now provides the Model 3 with the FM radio feature. This puzzled many, considering that the Tesla Model 3 should be one of the most advanced vehicles in the market and yet it didn’t have an FM radio. A video of one of the first deliveries in Texas showed that a radio – a very basic feature – doesn’t come with Model 3.

It took quite some time for Tesla to reveal their new all-electric truck called the Semi. And before it made its debut, it received a lot of hype and attention, which is why people were excited for its reveal. Apart from being an all-electric truck, it was also supposed to be quicker than any diesel alternatives.

But here is the biggest question: does performance matter to long-haul drivers? Well, according to the UK’s Road Haulage Association (RHA), performance is not actually that important.

Rod McKenzie RHA policy advisor of Autocar said earlier this week that drivers do not really prioritize performance figures, and what actually concerns them would be the charging ports that are lacking, as well as the minimal range of the Tesla.

As 2017 comes to a close, for sure, many of you are eager to learn what’s in store next year. If Rimac Automobili hasn’t been in your radar, we’re here to tell you that it should be. Have you heard what Rimac has been up to lately?

In case you didn’t know, this is the company that brought us the Concept One. Well, Autoguide has reported earlier that Rimac is hinting of coming out with its own electric roadster. If that plan pushes through, chances are high that Rimac’s electric hypercar could outrun the Tesla Roadster --- both on the road and with regards to the pace of production.

It’s easy to make this conclusion. After all, Rimac’s incredibly powerful Concept One coupe packs an awesome output of 1224hp (918kW) and 1180 (2548 Nm) on tap. It makes sense that the “soon-to-become-Rimac convertible” will be more potent (or at least as powerful) as the preceding coupe version, right?

After several delays, Tesla unveiled its new all-electric heavy duty truck – the new Tesla Semi. The Silicon Valley-based carmaker touted the new Semi as having the ability to offer truck drivers with better experience, thanks to heightened safety levels and lower cost of transporting cargo. But after the reveal, there is one enigma that needed to be unraveled – the price of the new Tesla Semi.

Tentatively, the pricing for the new Tesla Semi could go as low as $150,000. Yes, the price hasn’t been fully finalized yet, with some changes on the rate still possible. While the prices for the new Tesla Semi are still tentative, they could remain as they are when the carmaker finally announces the final pricing of its new electric heavy duty truck.

The carmaker will be offering the new Tesla Semi electric heavy duty truck in two flavors. The first of them could go as far as 300 miles (480 km) before needing to re-charge, and this version has a starting price of $150,000. For fleet customers seeking a Tesla Semi that could cover a longer distance, they could go for the version that has an all-electric range of 500 miles (800 km) on a single charge.

Following the Tesla Roadster’s electrifying revelation on Thursday, Musk’s highly ambitious goals have skyrocketed when he tweeted about his future plans for the new sports car. Well, kind of.

The now controversial tweet, which was published on the 20th of November hints at the possibilities of enabling the 2nd generation Roadster to “fly short hops”. Does that mean the new Tesla Roadster could actually fly? We don’t know the answer. But according to Tesla’s CEO, the new Roadster’s special option package could take it “to the next level” while explaining how rocket technologies could open up ground-breaking possibilities if applied to a car. While he admitted flying is “certainly possible”, Musk at least is well aware of its threat to safety.

Let’s just say Elon Musk is simply having one of those “it’s not rocket science” episodes where he tends to dream big and doesn’t hold back when he wants the whole world to know all about it. And it doesn’t need a rocket scientist to figure this out either. The “flight” option could only mean that the new Roadster could take off faster than 1.9 seconds or maybe go beyond what the entry level Roadster now has to offer.

Automotive industry veteran Bob Lutz has once again spoken out against Tesla. Known as one of Tesla Motors’ greatest skeptics, Lutz had stated two years ago that the Silicon Valley carmaker is doomed. Now, Lutz is saying flat out that Tesla is going out of business and won’t even get to 2019 at this rate.

In an interview with the show “Power Lunch” at CNBC, Lutz cited a number of issues or reasons why Tesla would not be able to last long in the automotive industry. The electric carmaker has been facing these issues for quite some time, and some of these have been known to the public.

According to Lutz, Tesla is burning its cash fast, no thanks to fixed costs that are now out of control. In fact, Tesla is also spending around $1 billion a quarter, which is at par with what GM spends. However, there is a big difference in the number of vehicles and models that the two carmakers are selling. For instance, Tesla is effectively selling just three models while GM has dozens on its lineup. While GM is raking profits, Tesla posted $619 million in losses in the third quarter of 2017 while managing to build just 260 examples of the Model 3.
