Drag races usually pit one vehicle against another to see which of them would cross the finish line first. This has become a popular type of motor racing and some even do it to determine which of the two cars is quicker. Somehow, a certain drag race had a new Volkswagen Arteon go up against an older BMW 5-Series (F10), and the action is all recorded on video.
The video – created by Odessa Drag – saw action between a gold-colored automatic VW Arteon R-Line powered by a 2.0-liter engine and a black-finished BMW 5 Series (F10) powered by a 3.0-liter petrol mill. As the race starts, the golden VW Arteon managed to pull away quickly from its opponent. The video is quite noisy – as if there’s a horde of mosquitoes in the area – as it was captured through a flying drone. Based from the video, the drag race appears like it might have occurred in the city of Odessa in Ukraine, Eastern Europe.
At the end, the BMW 5 Series never recovered and the VW Arteon proved to be the better vehicle between the two. However, the information provided by the uploader is so scant that it doesn’t provide a clear picture of the drama of the drag race. If you consider how loaded the model version is, the BMW 5 Series isn’t expected to easily lose against the VW Arteon. In fact, in some power matchups, the BMW 5 Series might have won.Read the entire article VW Arteon goes up against BMW 5 Series F10 in intense drag race [w/video]
G-Power is known as one of the few BMW-tuning specialists, and they now have fresh upgrades for the newest 5 Series that is already quite powerful to begin with. What the tuner did was that they installed an additional engine control module that lets the car access more power from its engine.
Specially made for BMW’s 3.0 liter inline six diesel engine, the D-Tronik 5 V1 can help give it a major upgrade in output. To be more specific, when the M550d xDrive is tuned, it gets 59 horsepower (44 kilowatts) more than the stock model, adding up to 453 horsepower (338 kilowatts), and 74 pound-feet (100 Newton metres) more torque, totaling with 634 pound-feet (860 Newton metres). Similarly, the 540d can be maximized to 380 horsepower (283 kilowatts) and 553 pound-feet (750 Nm) of torque after the upgrade, compared to the standard version which only had an output of 315 horsepower (235 kilowatts) and 502 pound-feet (680 Nm).
That’s not all though, there is also the Bi-Tronik 5 V1, but this time, it is for the 3.0 liter inline six gasoline fueled mill. It can push the 540i to 394 horsepower (294 kilowatts), that is 59 horsepower (44 kilowatts) more, as for the torque, it goes up by 66 pound feet (90 Nm), now hitting 398 pound-feet (540 Newton metres).Read the entire article G-Power tunes BMW M550d’s engine for extra horsepower and torque
Check out the Rhodonite Silver paint job on BMW 530e (G30) plug-in hybrid, 540d (G31) xDrive Touring
The photos are courtesy of a guy from Sweden who claims to have ordered a 540i x G30 and is expecting its arrival next summer. Notably, the pictures were taken without sunlight so there may be some variation. Nevertheless, this customer is excited to share these photos with fellow BMW enthusiasts to see what they have to say about this uncommon colour.
The usual silver that we’re accustomed to seeing on cars doesn’t display any hints of chrome or lilac unlike the Rhodonite Silver Metallic on the 5-series models. Interestingly, BMW Individual Program has other interesting exterior color options including Azurite Black that drops a tinge of blue into it and Champagne Quartz with traces of metallic purple, gold and beige all rolled into one. Of course, there’s the Almandine Brown Metallic that looks so dark you’d think it’s another shade of black. But since both the xDrive Touring G31 540d and the G30 530e plugin hybrid are donning BMW M Sport packages, the Individual colour must have been particularly chosen as an upgrade which we estimate will cost you about £1,740.Read the entire article Check out the Rhodonite Silver paint job on BMW 530e (G30) plug-in hybrid, 540d (G31) xDrive Touring
People residing in the state of Victoria in Australia may soon find a number of Mercedes-Benz cars making rounds on the streets as police patrol cars. This comes as BMW Australia recently inked a partnership agreement to supply the police force in Victoria, Australia, with cars to be used as highway patrol units.
According to the agreement, BMW Australia will be supplying the Victoria Police with around 80 units of the BMW 530d diesel-powered sedans. The first batch of these BMW 530d Victoria Police Highway Patrol vehicles would be operational by early 2018, with the complete fleet (80 units) already on the service by the end of next year.
BMW Australia will present the BMW 530d to Victoria Police in entry-level specs. According to Australian Web site Car Guide, this particular BMW 530d is powered by a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder unit that could deliver 195 kW (261 hp) of max output and 620 Nm of peak torque. This amount of power is sent to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission, allowing the new BMW 530d to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. The 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine in the BMW 530d is very efficient as well – consuming just 4.7 liters of diesel per 100 km (combined cycle) and emitting only 124 grams of carbon dioxide emissions per km.Read the entire article Australia’s Victoria Police to ride in 80 BMW 530d highway patrol cars by 2018
A few weeks after teasing the new 2018 BMW Alpina D5 S high-performance diesel-powered car, Alpina is now letting more information out of the bag. This new creation based on the BMW 5-Series that’s tagged as the fastest serial diesel car in the world comes in two body types – saloon (sedan) and touring (estate or wagon).
Alpina is introducing the new BMW Alpina D5 S to the global audience at the 2017 Frankfurt Auto Show. Expected to be the highlight of the Buchloer booth, the Alpina D5 S is eager to prove its worth as a diesel car that could give petrol-powered sedans and wagons a run for their money in terms of acceleration and speed.
The new BMW Alpina D5 S is derived from the new G30 generation of the BMW 5-Series. The BMW Alpina D5 S may have less power output as BMW’s high-performance M550d, but it has more torque. This allowed the BMW Alpina D5 S to be as quick as the BMW M550d. However, electronic limitations were loosened up a little, allowing the D5 S to be faster than the M550d.Read the entire article 2018 BMW Alpina D5 S is one of the fastest serial diesel cars in the world
When an automotive company reaches a certain production milestone (such as the 1-millionth car that rolled off its production line), they often keep the car. Often as a trophy or a remembrance of the success of the car. But this time, BMW decided not to keep its 10 millionth 5 Series.
Recently, the number 10 million 5-series rolled off the production line at Bavaria’s Dingolfing plant, and the company decided to ship it to Korea to put it up for auction. The lucky buyer made a bid of 75 million won.
But if you convert that amount, it actually isn’t that big for a landmark special. As per current conversion rates, 75 million won is just about 60,000 euros or $65,000. For the sake of comparison, this particular 5-series was based on the 520d, which in Germany starts just below 38,000 euros before tax, and 45,000 euros after. While in Korea, after the destination fee, it starts at 66.3 million won. So at 75 million won, the unidentified bidder would have paid for another 8.7 won (around $7,600) for the 10-millionth 5 Series. Not a bad deal, I must say.Read the entire article 10-millionth BMW 5 Series auctioned off for 75 million won in South Korea
Only recently, it was rumoured that BMW has been putting their time and energy into venturing and coming up with brand new niches to launch into the global automotive markets. Lately, we have observed that almost everything has been dished out from the German automaker including the Gran Tourers, Active Tourers and Gran Coupes, however they haven't released vehicles that can go head to head against the Audi Allroad or the Mercedes Benz E Class All Terrain. Audi has been releasing Allroad units that are largely influenced by the A6 Avant models ever since '99.
It was reported that back at the BMW HQ, there are new things occurring, but they are apparently planning to target Tesla and the prime market. The 3 Series GT replacement is rumoured to be an electric car, and the 6er is reviving the 8 series trademark but with a consequential price increase. So it’s predicted that the 5 Series will not come at par with the classic A6 Allroad idea.
Now, Sports utility vehicles are creating lots of buzz in the automotive industry. This is why some automakers resorted to tricking their potential customers with high-riding wagons including the Volvo V90 Cross Country and Mercedes-Benz Benz E-Class All Terrain. Now the problem is that wagons are now slowly losing their appeal with the American consumers.Read the entire article BMW 5 Series Cross Touring render revealed! Could this idea work in the US?
After earning the maximum safety rating of five stars from the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP), the 2017 BMW 5 Series (G30) was named by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) a “Top Safety Pick +.”
Being granted with the Top Safety Pick+ by IIHS isn’t an easy feat. Currently, IIHS grants two awards safety awards for 2017: Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+. To become 2017 Top Safety Pick, a vehicle should earn good ratings in five crashworthiness tests (small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints). Likewise, a vehicle should earn an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention. Qualifying for 2017 Top Safety Pick+ means a vehicle managed to earn good ratings in all five crashworthiness tests as well as an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention. Furthermore, it should earn an acceptable or good headlight rating.
Following the necessary tests, IIHS adjudged that the 2017 BMW 5 Series is qualified to be granted the Top Safety Pick+ award. This comes after the 2017 BMW 5 Series earned “Good” ratings for the five crashworthiness tests -- small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints. It also earned a “Superior” rating for front crash prevention as well as “Good” rating for its headlights.Read the entire article IIHS gives Top Safety Pick+ award to sixth-generation 2017 BMW 5 Series (G30)
BMW just announced that the 2018 530e iPerformance will be getting another option - that is a wireless charging station instead of the standard plug-in.
The iPerformance originally comes with a plug in that is rated at 3.7 kilowatts. With this rate, the 9.2 kWh battery can be replenished in less than three hours with a wall box.
But to ensure safety, charging power through the electric socket is limited, so it will take about five hours to fully charge the battery.Read the entire article BMW makes a prototype of wireless charger for the 2018 530e iPerformance
The redesigned 5 series G30 arrived in dealers around mid-February, and 2,000 units were already pre-ordered by customers, so by the end of March, BMW only had 200 unsold sedans in dealer inventory according to Ludwig Willisch, BMW Group Region Americas.
Willisch added that the 5 series is “a scarce species” but supplies aren’t supposed to be that low. Since the end of March, production and deliveries have increased, and by now, dealers will have a two- to three-week supply during the launch.Read the entire article BMW dealers demand for more supply of the redesigned 5-Series (G30)
After launching the latest version of the BMW M550i xDrive, the German carmaker is now introducing its diesel counterpart -- the new M550d xDrive (G30/G31). Available either as a sedan or as touring model, the new M550d xDrive offers less output than the M550i xDrive, but has significantly more torque than the gasoline model.
Operating behind the scenes is a 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine that could be considered as the world’s most powerful of its kind in the automotive area. This six-cylinder diesel mill employs multi-stage turbocharging with four turbochargers, allowing it to provide up to 400 hp (294 kW) of output at 4,400 rpm and up to 560 lb.-ft. (760 Nm) of torque available from 2,000 rpm.
Interestingly around 332 lb.-ft. (450 Nm) of torque is readily available from just 1,000 rpm. In comparison, the M550i xDrive is powered an M Performance Turbo 8-cylinder TwinPower 4.4-liter engine with a pair of twin-scroll turbochargers and a High Precision Injection system. This gasoline engine could deliver 456 hp of max output at 5,550 rpm and 480 lb.-ft. of torque available at 1,800 rpm. When compared to the previous M550d xDrive, the latest iteration is more powerful by 19 hp (14 kW) and 15 lb.-ft. (20 Nm).Read the entire article 2018 BMW M550d xDrive (G30/G31) debuts with four turbochargers

And now it can add another achievement to its long list of successes: the German automotive company's latest BMW 5 Series (G30) bagged a 5-star rating safety in the Euro NCAP Crash Test, securing a solid 81% overall score.
The midsize sedan got an impressive 91 percent rating in adult occupant safety, while getting a splendid 85 percent in the child occupant safety. The upcoming 2017 Shanghai Auto Show will be the first venue for the newest member of BMW’s Chinese lineup – the new long-wheelbase 5 Series Li. This premium sedan will be exclusively available in the People’s Republic for the meantime.

BMW has confirmed that for now, it will not be releasing an M5 Touring. However, for those who want something in a similar vein, then Alpina may have the answer.
Based in Germany, Alpina is an automaker that manufactures cars based mainly on BMW models. Its latest offering is the elegant B5 Bi-Turbo which is based on the latest 5-Series (G30) range of BMW. Fans of the company are likely to be excited as everything they expect from Alpina is there. The alloy 20-inch multi-spoke wheels? Check. Brake calipers in blue? Check. It even has an aerodynamic kit that gives it that timeless design.
Powering this model is the biturbo 4.4-liter V8 engine that is capable of delivering 608 hp (447 kW) with peak torque of 590 lb.-ft. (800 Nm). This output is then channeled to the all-wheel drive system using the automatic eight-speed ZF transmission. With this amount, the sedan version is able to get a maximum speed of 205 mph (330 km/h) with acceleration from 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100 km/h) possible in 3.5 seconds. Since the wagon version is a bit heavier, maximum speed is at 202 mph (325 km/h) with acceleration from standstill to 62 mph (100 km/h) achieved in 3.6 seconds.Read the entire article Alpina releases elegant B5 Bi-Turbo with 608 hp
The new BMW 5 Series Touring is definitely the sporty all-rounder model of the range. It is smart, luxurious and elegant, and at the same time, functional and dynamic. Now, German premium carmaker BMW is showing at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show that the BMW 5 Series Touring (G31) could be made hotter with a range of performance upgrades courtesy of M Performance Parts.
First off, the dynamic road performance new BMW 5 Series Touring could be boosted with the BMW M Performance Power Kits – and this is done without significantly affecting their fuel consumption levels and the emissions rate, as per EU test cycle. At launch, the BMW 540i xDrive Touring (petrol) will be available with the BMW Power and Sound Kit that could increase the power output of its six-cylinder in-line petrol engine – mated to an eight-speed Steptronic transmission -- from 250 kW (240 hp) to 265 kW (360 hp). The BMW Power and Sound Kit could also hike its torque levels from 450 Nm to 500 Nm – resulting to a greater engine response and pulling power. Just as the kit’s name indicates, it also bestows the BMW 540i xDrive Touring with a sporty soundtrack thanks to its silencer system.
Of course, BMW 5 Series customers who don’t want the power upgrade could avail of the BMW M Performance exhaust system as a separate product. The BMW M Performance exhaust system is available for the BMW 540i xDrive Touring and the BMW 530i Touring while a diesel version is offered for the BMW 530d Touring, BMW 530d xDrive Touring and BMW 520d Touring. Alpina had previously teased customers and fans alike with a teaser for its upcoming 2018 B5 Bi-Turbo sedan. That is not enough it seems as the company has released another teaser showing the B5, this time the Wagon version, going through mountain roads. With this, the anticipation for the new B5 has increased further prior to its official debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.
Based on what can be gathered from the video, it appears that the new B5 will have the XDrive configuration, and if not offered as standard then a possible option. There is no word however if the brand will release the D5 at the same time as the B5. If not, then it is likely that it will be a few months before Alpina will reveal the diesel version.
With regards to power, many are saying that the B5 will hopefully have at least the same capability as that of the 4.4-liter biturbo V8 engine. This engine can deliver output of 600 hp (441 kW) with maximum torque of 591 lb.-ft. (800 Nm). For the D5, it should have power similar to what the 3.0-liter diesel engine can offer which is 345 hp (257 kW) with peak torque of 516 lb.-ft. (700 Nm).Read the entire article Alpina reveals teaser for 2018 B5 Bi-Turbo Wagon [w/video]
Sooner or later this year, BMW intends to launch a performance version of its recently launched BMW 5 Series (G30) through the new BMW M5. But before we could see that happen, German carmaker Alpina will also be launching its own iteration and interpretation of the BMW 5 Series – the next generation of the Alpina B5.
Just recently, Alpina launched a teaser campaign for its new-gen B5. Two video clips were intended and the German company has just shown the first one. Well, the short video clip – lasting for just 30 seconds – shows a heavily camouflaged Alpina B5 speedily cruising through a road full of snow as surrounded by pine trees. It might be intending the dynamic capability of the new Alpina B5 to take on any challenges on any weather, even if the road is as slippery as an ice skating rink. The video clip ends by announcing that a new BMW Alpina is coming.
Since the 2018 Alpina B5 is heavily camouflaged – and no thanks to the snowy white background – it was pretty hard to see the visual changes implemented by the exclusive carmaker to transform a new BMW 5 Series into a new Alpina B5. Yes, while the new Alpina B5 should be very well derived from the new BMW 5 Series, it doesn’t mean they would look the same. The exterior appearance of the new generation of the BMW 5 Series (G30) should give us a good idea on how the new Alpina B5 would look like when it finally makes its debut on the market.Read the entire article Alpina teases new 2018 B5 ahead of Geneva Motor Show [w/video]
In many industries, it is the rivalries that make things exciting. In basketball for example, there is the well-known rivalry between the Los Angeles Lakers against the Boston Celtics. For football, there is Barcelona versus Real Madrid. In the automotive industry, there is the infamous competition between Ferrari and Lamborghini. At present, there is a new rivalry in the making which is the 5-Series (G30) from BMW against the E-Class (W123) of Mercedes-Benz.
What makes the battle between this two exciting is that they both belong to the executive mid-size saloon class. For cars that cost less, what buyers consider are generally related to the value or the added features. Premium models however also take into consideration the design, prestige, and heritage. The choice is made more difficult as both brands have been implementing changes.
For those wanted comfort and be on the more conservative side, the choice was always Mercedes-Benz. BMW meanwhile was all about athletic looks and a thrilling drive. However recently, BMW has been playing it a bit safe with Mercedes becoming more daring. So how do they fare against each other?Read the entire article A Quick Look: Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W213) vs. BMW 5-Series (G30)
