Next-generation BMW X1 to sit on the new UKL1 platform, will be front-wheel drive

The new BMW X1 compact SUV will be the second front-wheel-drive model that will be underpinned by the group's UKL1 platform, following the 2-series Active Tourer. The second-generation X1 will be the first modern-era BMW to be powered by the front-wheel drive. BMW will start selling the Active Tourer in Europe in September and the new X1 in June 2015.

Sources privy with BMW said the carmaker is planning to build a third model on the platform -- the X2 SUV, a three-door vehicle with a four-seat interior and will resemble the larger X6 SUV.

New X2 will also be rolled out in summer 2015 and will be one of 10 derivatives that BMW plans to be underpinned by the front-wheel-drive architecture in the future. BMW also use the UKL1 platform for its new Mini, is planning to further streamline operations by developing the new X1 and X2 jointly with the second-generation Mini Countryman and Clubman.

Second-generation Bmw X1 will be built on a new front-drive architecture

BMW’s second-generation X1 will be getting a significant change in its engineering in 2015. Instead of the existing car’s rear-wheel-drive platform, the upcoming car will be built on a new front-drive architecture that will be used on upcoming Minis as well as on a new 1-series GT, which will debut this September at the Paris motor show.

Sources said that this move to change platforms has been decided in order to provide added packaging benefits to the next-generation BMW X1 and have reduced production costs. They suggest that the new small soft-roader will accommodate more compared to its predecessor, due to a new transverse mounting of its engine that saves space.

Offering economies of scale is the fact that the new X1 shares major elements, such as several of its driveline combinations, with the second-generation Mini Countryman. The company is developing the new front-wheel-drive platform, which is also referred to as the UKL or ‘Unter Klasse’ (German for ‘entry level’) structure, to underpin an entire range of new BMW Group cars, like the next generation of Mini models and a few BMWs.

Toyota thinks that the 600 hp C-HR could beat the Honda Civic Type R’s Nurburgring record

Last April, the new Honda Civic Type R made a new record for the current front wheel drive, by going around the Nurburgring and finishing a lap with a time of 7 minutes 43.80 seconds. But today, Toyota thinks that they have what it takes to beat the Honda Civic Type R’s record, even without a true hot hatchback in their lineup. Rather, it is the C-HR that recently made its debut at the 2017 SEMA Show, with 600 horsepower (447 kilowatts) which they think could make a new record.

They say that if the head of the tuning company behind Toyota’s R-Tuned C-HR, Dan Gardner were to decide, the C-HR would already be at the track. In fact, the Japanese automaker believes that it is the “world’s quickest SUV”, and we’re not doubting them. True enough, it has been proven to be faster than the Lamborghini Aventador, the Porsche 911 GT3 and many other supercars as it only took 1 minute 25.22 seconds to go around the Willow Springs Raceway.

Gardner said to Autocar that this model was actually built for SEMA, and so far, the automaker has announced no plans for it. He also described it to be the real deal, and that it is his dream to take the super-SUV to the Nordschleife. And as mentioned earlier, he is confident that it is capable of setting the front-wheel-drive record.

BMW M still wary of building front-wheel drive high-performance M cars

It seems that BMW’s high-performance division -- BMW M – still has not warmed up to front-wheel drive vehicles. So those who had been looking forward to BMW M vehicles being offered as such should just stop hoping as the company has reiterated that a front-wheel drive M car won't be coming.

This was confirmed in an interview with Autocar by Dirk Hacker, BMW M vice president. He remarked that in an M vehicle, the driver has to feel the car through the steering and the throttle. He added that there is currently no solution for front-wheel drive vehicles.

BMW M’s indifference to front-wheel drive vehicles is understandable. In this set-up, the front wheels are made to accomplish two things at the same time: steer the vehicle and send power to the ground. A high-performance vehicle or a sports car won't find this setup to be optimal in terms of steering and handling, especially when high-speed handling is involved. This is aggravated by the fact that most of the weight of the vehicle is focused on the front. Furthermore, the issue of torque steer – a problem usually felt during hard acceleration -- remains to be fully solved in front-wheel drive cars, especially high-performance ones.

Mercedes-Benz has never been this pleased with its front-wheel drive models. After all, the German premium carmaker’s front-wheel drive models have been posting excellent sales. It seems Mercedes can’t hold its intentions any further as it is already planning to expand its front-wheel drive lineup by three more models, from the current five to eight new premium vehicles.

This comes after Ola Kallenius, chief of the Mercedes-Benz brand, disclosed to Car and Driver that the next generation of the premium carmaker’s front-wheel drive platform will underpin eight new models. The second generation of the platform – the Modular Front-wheel-drive Architecture 2 or MFA2 – is expected to be stiffer and lighter than the first generation, thanks to a more extensive use of high-strength steel.

Just like the first-generation Modular Front-wheel-drive Architecture (MFA), MFA2 will not only accommodate front-wheel drive layouts but will also cover all-wheel drive configurations as well. However, the new MFA2 platform would be more flexible, as it allows for more variations in wheelbase and track widths – the reason why it could underpin eight new Mercedes-Benz models.

BMW revealed that it will be releasing a new generation of the BMW X1. At present, it already has attained record sales of more than 800,000 units. In China alone, around 200,000 units of its first generation were sold, with around 140,000 of those manufactured locally at BMW Brilliance's Tiexi facility.

The new generation of the BMW X1 manages to redefine its class and enhances how the brand values customer requirements considering that it focused on having a full understanding of their needs.

Take China for example, for this market the brand developed the X1 to have a long wheelbase. By having a long wheelbase, the X1 is able to set the benchmark as it relates to quality and versatility. It also offers a high standard when it comes to the amount of space offered in the rear.

BMW has just unveiled its second-generation X1 compact crossover, a vehicle that will compete with the upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLC that replaces the GLK, Range Rover Evoque as well as the Audi Q3. Set to go on sale this fall, the 2016 BMW X1 (F48) will offer more interior room, a new design and additional technology.

Seen from the front, the new X1 looks like a smaller BMW X5 and compared to its predecessor, the new model has grown in height (+53 millimetres). BMW says that that thanks to the height increase, the new X1 offers a significantly raised seating position (+36 mm at the front and +64 mm at the rear), +37 mm more knee room in the rear in standard specification and up to 66 mm with the optionally adjustable rear seat.

When it comes to interior design, the X1 offers a driver-focused cockpit which includes standard equipment such as air conditioning, an audio system with USB and AUX-in sockets and the iDrive operating system featuring a 6.5-inch display. Also new are the full-LED adaptive headlights, head-up display and the Driving Assistant Plus line-up of the Active Cruise Control system with Stop & Go function, Lane Departure Warning, Traffic Jam Assistant, Collision Warning and Pedestrian Warning with City Braking function.

Expect a more fuel-efficient Audi Q3 next year as the carmaker is making true plans to endow the revised crossover with more efficient powertrains. Audi did not only enhance the output of its gasoline-powered TFSI engines, but also installed a fuel-saving cylinder deactivation technology called “displacement on demand” system.

This system shuts down two cylinders when not needed, making the powertrain around 7 percent more efficient. The upgrade is part of the Q3’s mid-cycle refresh, which entails a revised design and more standard features. Audi will roll out the Q3 in Europe in February 2015 and later in the United States.

The Q3 currently stands atop Europe’s premium crossover segment, followed by BMW X1. Audi sold 5-percent more Q3s in the first half of 2015 to 40,730 units, helping the overall European premium crossover segment to post a 9-percent jump in sales in the period to 232,075 units, according to JATO Dynamics.

The Megane RS Facelift was unveiled by Renault back in 2013 at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) but the French company continues its tradition of limited edition Megane Renaultsports and unveiled today the Megane Renaultsport 275 Trophy. For those who don’t know, Renault first unveiled its line of limited edition Megane Renaultsports models back in 2011 when it introduced the 265 Trophy and continued with the Red Bull Racing RB8.

Set to make UK debut at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed, the new 2015 Megane Renaultsport 275 Trophy has a big mission: to reclaim the title as the fastest front-wheel drive vehicle on the Nurburgring racetrack as it aims to lap the well-known track in under 8 seconds.

Currently, the title is held by Seat’s new Leon Cupra 280, which lapped the Nurburgring in 7 minutes and 58 seconds. The new Megane Renaultsport 275 Trophy is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine that delivers 275 hp at 5,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 360 Nm from 3,000 to 5,500 rpm. Despite these numbers, fuel consumption remains low at 7.5 l/100 km or 37.7 UK mpg.

Chrysler chief executive Sergio Marchionne is still committed to employing the new nine-speed automatic transmission on its front-wheel-drive-based models even though software glitches in the gearbox was the prime cause of a two-month delay of the launch of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee.

Chrysler, which licenses the nine-speed technology from ZF Friedrichshafen, will use the transmission in the 2015 Chrysler 200 and Jeep Renegade. Chrysler said it continues to refine the transmission's operating software in the Chrysler 200, confident that the model would be in dealerships as promised in the second quarter.

Unlike the Cherokee, the 200 regularly uses the most fuel-efficient ninth gear during typical operations. Marchionne has said that the nine-speed is the “shortest, most complex transmission you can buy in the marketplace," adding that it features a number of wonderful attributes.

Mercedes-Benz will fit three-cylinder engines for future hybrid versions of its compact fwd drive vehicles, disclosed Bernhard Heil, chief of powertrain development of Daimler AG. Mercedes' engineers, however, are not keen to the idea of using three-cylinder engines, but its small size will be necessary for transverse-mounted hybrid powertrains.

Heil told Automotive News in an interview that in packaging a hybridized engine in the front end, the four-cylinder engine has its limitations. Since Daimler's rwd vehicles have enough room, they will be fitted with four-cylinder engines and up. Mercedes' C class, E class and S class are designed to contain bigger engines, while a hybrid-four-cylinder combo does not give rise to packaging issues.

According to Heil, Daimler also intends to offer a small gasoline engine developed jointly with Renault. Mercedes already offers a slightly modified 1.5-liter turbo-diesel engine from Renault in compact cars marketed in Europe. Both the three-cylinder engine and the four-cylinder engine Daimler is co-developing with Renault are designed to be contained into the compact A class, B class, CLA and GLA.

BMW is planning to widen the gap between the next-generation X1 and the facelifted X3 (F25) because it has a surprise for us: it will introduce a new X2 model. As expected, the BMW X2 will use the platform of the next-gen X1 as well as the engines: an extended range of transversely mounted three-cylinder and four-cylinder direct injection petrol and common rail diesel engines with a capacity from 1.5- to 2.0-liters, same used by the recently introduced front-wheel drive 2-Series Active Tourer.

BMW X2 will be offered as standard with the six-speed manual transmission or with the optional eight-speed automatic gearbox and electro-mechanical multi-place clutch four-wheel-drive system. BMW is also planning a high-performance version of the X2 that will take on the Audi RS Q3 but also on the Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG.
