BMW has just unveiled its second-generation X1 compact crossover, a vehicle that will compete with the upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLC that replaces the GLK, Range Rover Evoque as well as the Audi Q3. Set to go on sale this fall, the 2016 BMW X1 (F48) will offer more interior room, a new design and additional technology.
Seen from the front, the new X1 looks like a smaller BMW X5 and compared to its predecessor, the new model has grown in height (+53 millimetres). When it comes to interior design, the X1 offers a driver-focused cockpit which includes standard equipment such as air conditioning, an audio system with USB and AUX-in sockets and the iDrive operating system featuring a 6.5-inch display. Expect a more fuel-efficient Audi Q3 next year as the carmaker is making true plans to endow the revised crossover with more efficient powertrains. Audi did not only enhance the output of its gasoline-powered TFSI engines, but also installed a fuel-saving cylinder deactivation technology called “displacement on demand” system.
This system shuts down two cylinders when not needed, making the powertrain around 7 percent more efficient. The upgrade is part of the Q3’s mid-cycle refresh, which entails a revised design and more standard features. Audi will roll out the Q3 in Europe in February 2015 and later in the United States.
The Q3 currently stands atop Europe’s premium crossover segment, followed by BMW X1. Audi sold 5-percent more Q3s in the first half of 2015 to 40,730 units, helping the overall European premium crossover segment to post a 9-percent jump in sales in the period to 232,075 units, according to JATO Dynamics.Read the entire article Fuel-efficient Audi Q3 crossover promises to keep the lead over BMW X1
The new BMW X1 compact SUV will be the second front-wheel-drive model that will be underpinned by the group's UKL1 platform, following the 2-series Active Tourer. The second-generation X1 will be the first modern-era BMW to be powered by the front-wheel drive. BMW will start selling the Active Tourer in Europe in September and the new X1 in June 2015.

New X2 will also be rolled out in summer 2015 and will be one of 10 derivatives that BMW plans to be underpinned by the front-wheel-drive architecture in the future. BMW also use the UKL1 platform for its new Mini, is planning to further streamline operations by developing the new X1 and X2 jointly with the second-generation Mini Countryman and Clubman.Read the entire article Next-generation BMW X1 to sit on the new UKL1 platform, will be front-wheel drive

BMW is planning to widen the gap between the next-generation X1 and the facelifted X3 (F25) because it has a surprise for us: it will introduce a new X2 model. Set to arrive somewhere in 2017, the BMW X2 will be inspired by the upcoming X4, which will debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, and is described as a more sporting variant of the next-generation X1.
As expected, the BMW X2 will use the platform of the next-gen X1 as well as the engines: an extended range of transversely mounted three-cylinder and four-cylinder direct injection petrol and common rail diesel engines with a capacity from 1.5- to 2.0-liters, same used by the recently introduced front-wheel drive 2-Series Active Tourer.
BMW X2 will be offered as standard with the six-speed manual transmission or with the optional eight-speed automatic gearbox and electro-mechanical multi-place clutch four-wheel-drive system. BMW is also planning a high-performance version of the X2 that will take on the Audi RS Q3 but also on the Mercedes-Benz GLA 45 AMG.Read the entire article BMW X2 will be based on the X1, arrive in 2017

BMW’s second-generation X1 will be getting a significant change in its engineering in 2015. Instead of the existing car’s rear-wheel-drive platform, the upcoming car will be built on a new front-drive architecture that will be used on upcoming Minis as well as on a new 1-series GT, which will debut this September at the Paris motor show.
Sources said that this move to change platforms has been decided in order to provide added packaging benefits to the next-generation BMW X1 and have reduced production costs. They suggest that the new small soft-roader will accommodate more compared to its predecessor, due to a new transverse mounting of its engine that saves space.
Offering economies of scale is the fact that the new X1 shares major elements, such as several of its driveline combinations, with the second-generation Mini Countryman. The company is developing the new front-wheel-drive platform, which is also referred to as the UKL or ‘Unter Klasse’ (German for ‘entry level’) structure, to underpin an entire range of new BMW Group cars, like the next generation of Mini models and a few BMWs.Read the entire article Second-generation Bmw X1 will be built on a new front-drive architecture

The Life Cycle Impulse (LCI) of the BMW X1 will finally be offered in the fourth quarter of 2012. The demand in Europe has been so consistently strong that it was prevented from entering the North American market twice. This car is the top-selling all wheel drive vehicle in Europe and is a big seller for BMW. The automaker saw this as an opportunity to have the latest improvements as well as to launch the BMW M Performance brand in the US.
Fans in the U.S. are disappointed that BMW’s M Performance X5 and X6M50d as well as the M550dxDrive and M550dxDrive Touring haven’t been offered in the country.
The U.S. market has also missed out on the BMW M135i, which will first come in the form of a 3dr and 5dr Sporthatch and then with additional xDrive. But then, the next-generation Coupe and Cabrio models, which are believed to be friendlier to the U.S. market, aren’t likely to appear in the near future. This means that presently, BMW has yet to have an official "M Performance" product for the U.S.Read the entire article BMW M Performance brand to make its debut in the US with the X1 M xDrive35i
Due to the high demand for the redesigned version of the X3, BMW won’t offer its compact X1 crossover in the U.S. until the end of 2012. Jim O'Donnell, CEO of BMW of North America, said that the X1’s supplies in the U.S. are tight since its sales are high overseas. In November 2009, the X1 was launched in Europe.
BMW wanted to offer the X1 in the U.S. in early 2011 but it decided to delay it until the end of the year. The launch has been postponed further by BMW’s European and U.S. management.
O'Donnell said that the X1 will “always” be a niche vehicle in the U.S. with expected sales of less than 5,000 units annually. The redesigned X3 crossover started sales in January. In the first quarter, 5,710 units were sold – a significant increase from 1,355 a year ago.Read the entire article Bmw delays X1 debut in US by the end of 2012, due to demand for new X3

The Bmw X1 seems to be a best-seller on the European market as the Bavarian manufacturer announced that it will not launch the small crossover in the United States before late 2011. Still, the vehicle may not arrive this year due to hot demand in Europe.
"We are supply constrained," said Jim O'Donnell, CEO of BMW of North America. "As long as they keep selling them, I do not know when we are going to get it." Apparently, the decision to delay the X1 crossover in the United States was made late last year.
For those who don’t know, the Bmw X1 went on sale in Europe in November 2009, and the demand outpaced supply.Read the entire article Bmw delays X1 launch in the United States, ‘blames’ the demand in Europe
