Bugatti won't have a new W16 engine, hints on making it more powerful

When Bugatti Automobiles unveiled the new Bugatti Divo, it announced that this new performance monster would be powered by the carmaker’s eight-liter W16 engine that provides 1,500 PS of output. Boasting of 16 cylinders in W formation – hence its name – the W16 is the same source of power for the Bugatti Chiron. The hypercar before the Chiron, the Bugatti Veyron, also had a W16 as its core.

Now, a source of pride at Bugatti, the W16 engine inside the Divo and the Chiron will have no replacement. This was revealed to CarAdvice by no less than the chief executive of Bugatti Automobiles, Stephan Winkelmann. The hypercar maker’s top honcho said that that there would be no new 16-cylinder engine, and the W16 will be the last of its kind.

Make no mistake; the W16 is still alive and kicking. It has been so since it was first installed under the hood of the Bugatti Veyron in 2005 or 13 years ago. In the first iteration of the Veyron, this W16 engine was tuned to deliver 1,001 PS (736 kW or 987 hp) of max output and 1,250 Nm (922 lb.-ft.) of peak torque. The final installment of the Veyron – the Bugatti Grand Sport Vitesse – had the W16 mill develop 1,200 PS (880 kW or 1,200 hp) of max output and 1,500 Nm (1,100 lb.-ft.) of peak torque.

SEMA Show-bound Future Forty by Superformance is a GT40 replica with Ford GT engine

Visitors at the much-awaited 2018 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show – scheduled from Oct. 30 to Nov. 2 -- can expect a wide array of show cars that demonstrate not only various aftermarket parts and specialty services, but also the capabilities for various companies. One of these show cars is the Future Forty from MagnaFlow and Superformance.

Superformance is an American automobile company that creates performance components and full replicas, especially cars from the 1960s like the Shelby Cobra, Daytona Coupe, GT40, and the Corvette Grand Sport. The company and MagnaFlow – a firm that takes pride of its expertise in performance exhaust systems superior catalytic converter technology – have decided enter into a partnership and create a visually exciting fabrication that makes use of a Ford MkI GT40 replica and the engine of a modern Ford GT. The result is what is to be shown at the upcoming 2018 SEMA Show – the Future Forty.

2018 SEMA Show: This Hellephant 426 is 1,000-hp Supercharged Mopar Crate Hemi engine

Mopar just brought a mammoth at the 2018 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mopar is introducing a new crate engine that is like an elephant from hell. Dubbed as the “Hellephant” 426 Supercharged Mopar Crate Hemi engine, this new powerplant isn't just massive in size, but also in performance.

Hellephant is essentially a brand-new HEMI-engine that borrows its name from the massive land mammal – because of its large size as well as its ability to deliver huge power figures. As Mopar disclosed, the Hellephant 426 Supercharged Mopar Crate HEMI engine can deliver up to 1,000 hp of humongous output and up to 950 lb.-ft. of torque. This new Hellephant engine is the first 1,000-hp crate engine kit ever offered by an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).

To achieve 1,000 hp of output, the Hellephant 426 Supercharged Mopar Crate HEMI engine is developed to be much larger that your usual HEMI engine. In fact, it boasts of 4.0 inches of stroke and bore specs at 4.125 inches. The Hellephant engine features an all-aluminum block, which made it much lighter than other engines of its size.

When Bugatti took the veil off the Chiron in 2016, it was well expected that the French carmaker would create versions of the sports car. Then, the carmaker unveiled the track-focused Bugatti Chiron Sport at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2018. But it seems Bugatti isn't finished yet, as it is reported to be planning to reveal an extreme version of the Chiron at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show.

According to our sources, Bugatti has plans to build an extreme version of the Chiron that even surpasses the Divo. It seems that a number of VIP customers were given the privilege of getting a good glimpse of the new upcoming version of the Chiron through sketches shown at the unveiling of the Bugatti Divo at Château Saint-Jean. As report, Bugatti described this new extreme version as “a beauty of speed” as well as a “ground-to-ground Missile”.

Chiron’s predecessor, the Bugatti Veyron was gifted with an extreme version that held the record for being the fastest street-legal car for more than seven years – the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport. This version features an engine that can deliver 1,200 PS (1,184 hp or 883 kW) of max output and 1,106 lb.-ft. (1,500 Nm) of peak torque. It managed to achieve a top speed of 267.856 mph (431.072 km/h) to set a new record, only to be broken seven years later.

The 2018 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show is just around the corner and Chevrolet won't just sit idle. It intends to get impressive at the 2018 edition of the event by displaying three vintage vehicles that are powered by Chevrolet Performance’s newest crate engines.

Up for display at the Las Vegas Convention Center from October 30 to November 2, 2018 are: a 1973 Chevrolet Chevelle Laguna powered by the all-new LT5 6.2-liter supercharged crate engine; a 1967 Chevrolet C/10 with the all-new ZZ6 EFI 5.7-liter V-8 crate engine; and a 1978 Chevrolet Silverado installed with the L96 6.0-liter V-8 crate engine.

The new LT5 6.2L supercharged crate engine in the 1973 Chevrolet Chevelle Laguna is derived from mill found under the hood of the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. Tuned to deliver 755 horsepower and 715 lb.-ft. of torque, the LT5 6.2-liter supercharged crate engine is Chevy’s most powerful production engine so far. This crate engine employs technologies like a new, larger-displacement supercharger and the carmaker’s first dual-fuel system with direct injection and supplementary port injection.

Nobody would dare take a Bugatti Chiron to the off-road. After all, the power, dynamics and capabilities of the Chiron are designed to challenge the road and even the track, but not the off- road. If a driver tries to drive a Chiron to an off-road path, he or she should be ready to shell out a large amount of money to repair the possible damages that the hypercar may incur during such adventure. In short, the Chiron is ill-equipped to tackle the off-road.

Nevertheless, a well-equipped Bugatti Chiron might be able to take on the off-road challenge. That would be too much to ask, as Bugatti has built itself as a creator of super-fast cars. A Bugatti sports utility vehicle is currently being considered at the carmaker, but transforming the Chiron into an off-road monster is something the carmaker would leave to other hands. Taking that insurmountable task – at least in a rendering is automotive graphic artist Rain Prisk, and the result of his efforts is the Bugatti Chiron 4X4.

Rain Prisk has been rendering images of existing cars and transforming them into something carmakers wouldn’t even think of. Some of this works include a pickup truck version of a Range Rover, a 2005 Ford GT Raptor, and shooting brake version of the Bugatti Divo. His latest work is the Bugatti Chiron 4X4, which is menacingly well-equipped to call the off-road trail its second home.

Quite a number of carmakers are already reducing or even stopping their lineup of diesel-powered vehicles, as sparked by the diesel emissions scandal at the Volkswagen Group. Nonetheless, German premium automaker BMW seems not affected by backlash against diesel engines. Instead, BMW has just confirmed its commitment to diesel technology.

As quoted by Australian magazine GoAuto at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, BMW AG board member for development Klaus Froehlich boasted of the carmaker’s accomplishments in the field of diesel technology. He remarked that from BMW’s perspective, the development of diesel engines is quite dramatic as the carmaker has managed to develop cleaner diesel-powered mills.

Moreover, Froehlich claimed at Paris that BMW has the best diesel engine, adding that all tests have shown that the German premium carmaker’s offerings have the lowest emissions among diesel-powered vehicles.

When BMW finally commences sales of the heavily anticipated 8-Series Coupe, it will offer the all-new flagship in two powerful engine variants – a petrol-powered biturbo 4.4 liter V8 unit and a diesel-fueled 3.0 liter biturbo inline six mill. Nonetheless, there are customers hoping that new BMW 8 Series would be offered with a V12 engine or a plug-in hybrid drive, but the German premium has no plans for those.

Carsten Groeber, vice-president of product management at BMW Group, was quoted by Australian magazine GoAuto at the 2018 Paris Motor Show as saying that a V12-powered 8 Series won't happen. The BMW 7 Series -- the M760Li xDrive in particular – is powered by a 6.0-liter V12 petrol engine that can provide 601 hp (448 kW) of output and 590 lb.-ft. (800 Nm) of peak torque. This allows the M760Li xDrive to dash from zero to 100km/h in just 3.7 seconds.

Groeber noted that the V8 engine and the in-line six unit already allows for a perfect weight distribution with the new 8 Series. Since the V12 engine is a very heavy mill, it would destroy this weight distribution, particularly making the front too heavy. He remarked that the V8-powered 8 Series is already a proper sportscar.

There have been no straight six-cylinder engines at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles since 2007, when Jeep launched the Wrangler JK generation. While Chrysler had been using straight six-cylinder engines since 1964, it eventually decided that it was already enough for this mill.

Just recently, rumors have been sprouting about the possibility of the rebirth of straight inline six-cylinder engines at Fiat Chrysler. These rumors also came up in 2017, but so far, no inline six-cylinder engines have been confirmed or even spied. The latest speculation was a result of a published report from Allpar, the same Web site that reported a similar rumor last year. Of course, these are just speculations, and we don’t vouch for their authenticity.

According to Allpar, Fiat Chrysler is reportedly developing a new straight-six engine as a complement to the new GME four-cylinder mills. These smooth yet compact new straight-six engines are to be derived from the new GME four-cylinder units.

It is better not to expect any new diesel engines from Cadillac, the luxury vehicle division of General Motors. After all, following much considerations of a number of factors, the top management of Cadillac has now decided to stop the development of diesel engine within the luxury carmaker.

During the North American launch of the Cadillac XT4 compact crossover in Seattle, Washington, Cadillac President Steve Carlisle revealed that the luxury car brand is indeed re-evaluating diesel technology. He noted that Cadillac has been working on diesel technology. However, the conditions in the markets around the world – especially their attitude towards diesel engines – have been changing more quickly than the company has anticipated.

It is well known that for the past years, Cadillac had been concentrating its engine development works on diesel mills, in particular four- and six-cylinder units. This diesel engine development work forms part of the luxury carmaker to further penetrate the premium car market in Europe. In addition, Cadillac was also planning to create and offer a number of vehicles powered by diesel engines in the US. In fact, the new XT4 was slated to have a version powered by diesel engine, as slated to arrive before or by the end of the decade (2020). GM’s luxury division had also expected to introduce diesel engines in more of its models.

Since 2016, Bugatti has been synonymous to Chiron. After all, the French sports car maker only has the Chiron in its stable since 2016. There is the Chiron Sport, but it is essentially just a track-focused version. There is the Divo, but this hypercar is also track-focused and is produced in very limited number (40 units). Many have been wondering whether Bugatti would offer another model. But just recently, it was confirmed that Bugatti is now ready to build a second model in addition to Chiron.

This confirmation was made not just by anyone from Bugatti Automobiles SAS, but by its top honcho, chief executive Stephen Winkelmann to CarAdvice. During an interview, Winkelmann remarked that he sees Bugatti as ready to do more than one model. This basically steers Bugatti – a part of the Volkswagen Group – into a new direction. The Chiron will still be offered, but a new model could be in the making.

Nonetheless, while Bugatti is ready to develop and launch a new model, it can’t do so right away. After all, the development of a model involves a lot of money. As such, a large investment is required. But Bugatti can’t hope to get such large investment from the VW Group right away – it needs to help. As Winkelmann justified, the VW Group is still stuck in its investments in projects like autonomous driving and electric cars.

One of the main reasons why the engine of your car keeps running despite of working in a high temperature environment is the installed cooling system. If not for this cooling system, the engine, its materials and lubricants can be damaged by high temperature.

The car’s cooling system isn't made up of a single application – it includes the radiator, a cooling fan, a water pump, coolant hoses and a thermostat. The coolant is circulated from the radiator, then around the engine and back to the radiator where it is cooled down anew. This circulation is made possible by the water pump, which is turned by a serpentine belt made from rubber and nylon cords.

Once this belt fails, the water pump wouldn’t work, and coolant wouldn’t be able to reach places where it should reach. As a result, the engine might overheat. In fact, most engine overheating problems are due to a broken water pump belt.

Modern vehicles typically have engines that employ Variable Valve Timing or VVT. Because of VVT, a car can achieve more optimal levels of performance and fuel efficiency at any engine speed. Before VVT was developed, the timing for opening and closing the engine valves was only optimized for a single engine speed. But since engine speeds vary, having a single timing means a decrease in both power and efficiency.

Now, VVT can vary the timing of opening and closing of engine valves for multiple engine speeds. When the engine speeds get higher, inlet valves open earlier to allow more air-fuel mixture to enter the cylinders. At normal driving conditions, VVT isn't activated. But when extra engine work is needed, VVT is activated. Then the information will be relayed from the VVT to the vehicle computer by the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) switch.

However, the VVT switch will wear out or fail. This is usually due to lack of basic maintenance. Once the VVT switch fails, the vehicle won't be able to receive any input from the ECU (engine computer unit) to vary the timing of the opening and closing of the valves according to the situation. As a result, the vehicle may experience a decline in performance as well as a decrease in fuel efficiency.
