All-new 2017 Buick Encore Facelift comes with improved styling, new tech

Buick Encore’s reputation as one of America’s most popular small SUVs is expected to get a boost with the arrival of the latest model at the 2016 New York Auto Show. According to Buick’s vice president for Sales, Service and Marketing, Duncan Aldred, the Buick Encore “created” the premium small SUV segment and continues to be the number one choice for those who want superior features and dependability combined with a “timeless design.”

The Encore made a name for itself after it was introduced to the public in 2013 and has quickly topped the small SUV market in 2014 and 2015. This small SUV offers the same premium features typically found in larger luxury SUVs but it comes with greater maneuverability. About 60% of Buick sales are of its SUVs.

Before the Enclave arrived in 2007, the SUV share of sales was at 34%. The Buick Encore, being the best-selling vehicle in North America last year, accounted for almost one third of overall sales. For the first two months of 2016, the Encore has increased sales by 34 percent and has extended a year-over-year streak in sales to 26 months.

2016 Buick Encore Sport Touring gets new 1.4L turbocharged engine

Set to start selling in the fall is the 2016 Buick Encore Sport Touring. It is powered by an exclusive, all-new 1.4L turbocharged engine that features direct injection and stop/start technology. Some of its unique exterior features are a winged rear spoiler and a set of 18-inch aluminum premium-finish wheels and door handles that have the same color as the body.

This sophisticated 1.4L turbo is included in a new lineup of small, power-dense engines that are meant to balance performance and efficiency with superior refinement. Aided by direct injection, this engine is capable of producing 153 hp (112 kW) and 177 lb-ft of torque (240 Nm) – which is about 11% more horsepower and almost 20% more torque than the standard engine on the Encore.

It gives the driver a greater sensation of power on demand, specifically during low- and mid-range engine speeds. It is coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission. It features stop/start technology that helps it to improve fuel economy during stop-and-go driving. With this technology, the engine is automatically shut down if the vehicle stops at certain times while driving like what happens in a stoplight.

GM hikes Buick Encore production on higher foreseen demand

Betting that the Buick Encore would remain a hot sell despite the arrival of some rival models, General Motors is expanding production capacity to hike the supply of the compact crossover to the United States by around 50 percent. Buick-GMC Vice President Duncan Aldred, told Automotive News in an interview on the sidelines of the National Automobile Dealers Association convention that GM is even diverting supply of the Buick Encore from other markets around the world as it anticipates more demand for the compact crossover.

GM builds the Encore at its production sites in Mexico, South Korea and Spain. According to US dealers, there is a four-month gap from the ordering to delivery – almost double compared to the gap for a US-build car.

Keith Hudson, dealer principal at Jim Hudson Buick-GMC-Cadillac in Columbia, S.C., remarked that the Encore attracts traditional import buyers, usually those aged 45 to 65 and are downsizing empty nesters.

GM hikes output of Buick Encore to cater to higher demand

General Motors admitted underestimating demand for its Buick Encore small crossover in the United States, but is now making moves to address the shortage for the unit at its dealerships across the country.  One of those dealerships is Chris Haydocy's, located in Columbus, Ohio. His dealership is now bound to receive around 20 Buick Encores.

Following a hot launch in January 2013, shipments of the small crossover to US dealership have slowed down. Haydocy, dealer principal at Haydocy Buick-GMC, remarked to Automotive News that the Buick Encore was “absolutely red hot” when the unit first came out." But then came what he described as a “lag that kind of took the wind out of the sails.”

He said they are finally getting adequate supply for the first time in three or four months. GM said that it recently boosted Buick Encore’s production in South Korea to make up for its demand in the US. The Encore is being built alongside the Opel Mokka in GM’s Korean assembly lines, as they share the same platform. The Mokka is also gaining popularity in Europe.

After the Chevrolet Trax received a 5-star rating at the EuroNCAP crash test it was time to see what its sister model, the 2013 Buick Encore was capable. According to the official press release, the 2013 Encore luxury small crossover maintains company’s commitment to safety as it received a 5-star Overall Vehicle Score for safety from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.

The Encore is not the only model that received this rating as the other Buick models Verano, Regal, LaCrosse and Enclave all have a NHTSA 5-star overall rating. For those who don’t know, the 2013 Buick Encore comes as standard with 10 airbags, Rear Vision Camera and the security of OnStar.

For those who don’t know, the NHTSA tests for its 5-star safety ratings program include front, side and rollover testing, along with a side pole test simulating a 20-mph side-impact crash into a 10-inch-diameter pole or tree at a 75-degree angle just behind the A-pillar on the driver’s side.

Buick’s retail sales in January had set a record – its highest in nine years. January 2013 sales were also 30% higher year over year. Buick also posted a 32% increase in total sales (which include sales to executive fleets and other commercial customers). Its sales last month are unmatched since 2006. Buick started deliveries of the Encore (its new luxury small crossover) in January.

One of the first people to get the Encore was bank underwriter Kelleigh Sheehy, from Marietta, Ga. She went to Buick.com to build the Encore of her dreams. She then visited Carl Black Buick in Kennesaw, Ga., where she found out that an exact match would be the first vehicle delivered. Sheehy said that the Encore had everything she wanted and that she didn’t have to make any type of compromise.

She had traded in a Volkswagen Jetta and the luxury, quietness and features of the Encore are unparalleled. But Sheehy cited its quietness as the Encore’s best characteristic. Recently, the Encore was named to as one of the “Top 10 Must Test Drive Vehicles for 2013” by Autotrader.com, which described it as a “nimble crossover SUV with an exceptionally quiet ride, a high-tech interior and estimated highway fuel economy of 33 mpg.”

The Buick Encore proved to be a popular compact crossover since the order bank for it was opened this fall. General Motors had expected an initial allocation of around 2,000 units, but Buick dealers requested around 9,000 Encores. This underscores the high demand for the compact crossover, which is smaller than the full-sized crossover Enclave.

Mark Whibbs, a Buick-GMC dealer in Pensacola, Fla., told Automotive News that the Buick Encore gives a rock-solid five-passenger crossover that “really anticipates what customers want right now," citing the model’s looks, fuel economy and versatility. Whibbs has so far ordered nine Buick Encores, which will go on sale in the US in January 2013.

However, measuring the future demand for the Encore could be tricky since its small size make it an unusual vehicle for Buick. Aside from that, the Encore is different from other vehicles in the US.
