GM will recall 38,000 sedans due to problems with circuit boards

General Motors Co. will be recalling over 38,000 sedans equipped with its "eAssist" mild hybrid system to fix circuit boards that may overheat. Such an incident may lead to a loss of battery charge or a fire in the trunk in extreme cases. According to the carmaker, it was aware of the two trunk fires related to the issue but remarked that there were no injuries or crashes as a result of the problem.

Affected sedans include the Chevrolet Malibu Eco, Buick LaCrosse and Regal from the 2012 and 2013 model years. The affected sedans were assembled in the United States before December 2012. Overheating of the circuit boards in the generator control module in some of the sedans may result to several issues like loss of battery charge and the illumination of a malfunction indicator light.

The issue, however, does not involve the eAssist battery. The engine may stall if the warnings are ignored. The issue may result to a burning or melting odor. GM said in a statement that it knows of the generator control board incidents, most of which have occurred within first 1,000 miles of operation.

Presently, the Buick LaCrosse has become a victim of the crumbling full-size sedan market. In fact, with a 204-day supply of inventory, the Buick flagship sedan has shown its weakness – low sales. But things may change if Buick would create a premium luxury version of its flagship sedan and have it don the Avenir badge. Buick is hoping that once the LaCrosse in the luxury car market, the destiny of its low-selling full-size sedan might cross to the greener pasture.

Buick or GM hasn’t confirmed it, but the LaCrosse Avenir was definitely included in GM’s 2018 Vehicle Identification Number Decoder revised and submitted to the NHTSA in September. As indicated in these documents discovered by GM Inside News – in particular in the VIN’s fifth position – Buick is planning to offer two configurations of the LaCrosse Avenir – front-wheel and all-wheel drive. General Motors is getting ready to unveil its new Buick Regal sedan at the Shanghai Auto Show 2017 in April. But before GM had the chance to do so, leaked images of the new sedan have surfaced.

Actually, we already have a good idea of how would the China-bound 2018 Buick Regal would look like as early as December 2016. At the time, General Motors introduced the Opel Insignia Grand Sport, which will have its official debut this March at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. This new large family car marks the second generation of the Insignia after nearly a decade. The Insignia Grand Sport features a new design made distinct by elegant lines as well as best-in-class aerodynamics. It is also underpinned by a new platform and loaded with new systems and technologies. Of course, it was openly known that the second-gen Insignia would be the basis for the new Holden Commodore and the new Buick Regal, and would be homologated for the requirements in the countries where they would be marketed. The new face of Buick has been unveiled at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show with the launch of the 2017 Buick LaCrosse. Among the major influences of this new look are the highly acclaimed Avenir concept seen at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and the Buick concept that appeared during the middle of the 20th century.

Set to start selling in the early part of the summer of next year, the LaCrosse has a redesigned grille that has a big opening and bears the Buick tri-shield insignia expressed with three colors (red, blue, and silver).

It is fitted with wing-like parts that are emphasized as they’re placed against darker waterfall grille bars that are reminiscent of the 1954 Wildcat II concept. Duncan Aldred, the vice president of Global Buick, said that the new LaCrosse marks the start of the next step in the brand’s quest to conquer the international scene.

As you may know already, the current Buick Regal is in fact a rebadged version of the Opel Insignia, which was designed for the European market. The Regal badge returned to the Buick lineup back in 2010, after a six-year break, and it is currently being assembled at GM’s Oshawa, Ontario, plant. Same plant is used by GM to build the Chevrolet Camaro, Cadillac XTS as well as the Chevrolet Impala.

Still, it appears that this plant doesn’t have a bright future ahead as GM already announced that the next-generation Camaro will be built at Lansing, Michigan while its Detroit-Hamtramck plant already builds the Chevrolet Impala.

The Cadillac XTS is a low volume vehicle and the production could be shifted to Detroit-Hamtramck plant too. Regarding the Regal, a redesign is planned for mid-2017, after the Opel Insignia gets a new generation.

General Motors has issued a recall of 8,208 Chevrolet Malibu and Buick LaCrosse sedans (MY2014) over issues with their front brake assembly. GM said in a statement that rear brake rotors might have been installed in the front brake assembly of the sedans, resulting to “possible reduced braking performance.”

The carmaker said that the situation could significantly shorten front brake pad life as well as cut brake system performance, which could heighten risk of a crash. GM said that around 1,700 of the cars with customers and the rest are with dealers. According to GM, it is unaware of any crashes or injuries linked to the problem.

It added that only a “small percentage” of the recalled vehicles would have the wrong front rotors. A spokesman for GM said the carmaker has sent a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration informing the agency of the recall.

Going further up, there’s the Premium II package, which comes with features like HID headlights, a set of 18-inch alloy wheels, and a Harmon/Kardon surround-sound audio system. The 2.4-liter or the 2.0T are priced from $32,930, a $2145 hike for the former and $375 for the latter. The Regal Turbo will get a top-spec Premium III trim that is priced at $34,100, which means that it’s $295 higher than its comparable 2012 model.
