Lincoln refreshes Navigator to announce it is still alive, challenge Escalade

While executives at Lincoln say that the 2015 Navigator is a moderate refreshening, the full-sized luxury SUV is actually expected to retake the lead in a segment the brand pioneered in the 1990s but eventually lost to the Cadillac Escalade.

Lincoln is hoping that the 2015 Navigator would serve as a reminder that the brand is still one of the dominant names in the luxury car industry, preparing customers to the real deal after two or three years when Lincoln rolls out a redesigned Navigator.

While Lincoln executives won’t discuss future product plans, industry analysts expect the new Navigator to bear an aluminum body. Lincoln was credited with creating the full-size luxury truck-based SUV segment, rolling out the MY1997 Navigator in 1996.

2018 New York Auto Show: Lincoln Aviator plug-in hybrid SUV offers supercar performance

Among these customers are families who are looking for a high-performance three-row SUV.

It should be noted that this is the brand’s first plug-in hybrid. According to the automaker, it will likely be paired with a biturbo V6 electric motor as opposed to a modest gasoline engine. Lincoln says that the Aviator will be at par or may even surpass many of the supercars on the road today.

Lincoln’s new ad features iconic namesake, Serena Williams also named brand ambassador

Matthew McConaughey, under the persona of Detective Rust Cohle, is not anymore the lone endorser of Lincoln cars. And that is because the automaker decided to get more brand ambassadors for the company’s image. For instance, they will include tennis superstar Serena Williams to represent exclusive online content, and finally, President Abraham Lincoln appears in its newest ad.

This is not the first time that Williams has driven a Lincoln. In fact, the first-ever car she purchased was a Lincoln Navigator that she named Ginger. After owning it for eight years, she then decided to pass the car on to her niece.

Williams said that when she first got her car, she thought the car looked great and she also felt safe in the luxury car she bought. She then said that when the opportunity came to work with the Lincoln Navigator, she felt excited and jumped at the chance as this reminded her of numerous amazing moments she had with her car. Lincoln has some good news for fans and enthusiasts of its Lincoln MKC – the premium brand’s small sports utility is getting a refresh for the 2019 model year. Among the updates are some new styling elements, increased connectivity, and more driver-focused technologies.

The battle for dominance in the market for large, luxurious body-on-frame sports utility vehicles is already heating up even before Ford commences sales of its new Lincoln Navigator SUV. This comes as GM decided to offer a trade-in deal that sees $5,000 off a new Cadillac Escalade.

Ford is all set to begin sales of the new Navigator SUV sometime next week. It is a massive improvement over the current iteration. In the last 20 years, Lincoln had not built coupes, nor has it made convertibles. Now the question is, what should one do when he wants a two-door coupe that looks like a Lincoln? A lot of people would consider the 2018 Lincoln Navigator an SUV large enough to fit seven passengers comfortably, and still having a lot of cargo space. But not everybody has the same standards, and some may still find it small for some odd reason. Well, if you are one of those people, then worry no more. Ford's luxury marque just announced that they have prepared what they call an "extended" version of the luxury SUV.

To be more specific, the Extended-lenght Lincoln Navigator will be almost one foot longer than the regular version. That’s 30 centimeters longer, meaning that there will be even more space for the passengers.

The extended Navigator offers a segment-leading cargo volume behind the second row seats, which the company is indeed proud of. An additional 15 cubic feet of cargo has been added behind the third row seats. And as I have mentioned earlier, the longer the vehicle, the more legroom there will be for the passengers. That’s because of its wheelbase that has been extended by almost 10 inches (25.4 centimeters) more than the standard version. But the good news doesn't end there, this version also has elongated rear doors which makes getting in and out of the car easier.

The former editor then hooked them up to come up with the Scrape creation. The interior of the new Lincoln Continental just got more stylish with the availability of a new theme – the Rhapsody. Of course, there is a reason why Lincoln chose to indulge the luxurious Continental with this new color theme.

Rhapsody will be the third theme that is available as part of the Black Label packages for the Lincoln Continental. It serves as the third option from Thoroughbred interior theme (black and brown) and the Chalet interior theme (cashmere and espresso). The premium brand calls the Rhapsody as a unique monochromatic interior with rich, layered tones of blue.

According to Lincoln, the Rhapsody Blue interior theme is founded in the world of music, sound and style. It was named after the famous classical (jazz) piece by American composer George Gershwin – Rhapsody in Blue – to which the designers of the Continental were listening to while working on this theme. Lincoln adds that the deep hues of Rhapsody interior emulate the velvet sky of twilight as evening transitions into darkness. Marcia Salzberg, senior designer for color and materials, remarked that the Rhapsody interior theme simply captured the tempo of life for the Lincoln client.

Lincoln proved to be growing the most in the United States in 2014, outpacing its larger rivals. Lincoln grew 16 percent last year – faster than BMW, Lexus and Audi – thanks to its newly launched MKC crossover. In fact, the MKC has not been in the market for a year, but it was the largest reason for Lincoln’s feat of achieving a fifth consecutive year of growth.

Sale of MKC sales accounted for 102 percent of Lincoln's total sales increase for 2014 -- 13,077 MKCs were sold while the brand's overall sales jumped 12,780 vehicles. The brand will try to continue the MKC momentum by launching this fall a redesigned MKX, which was unveiled at the Detroit auto show in January.

The MKC and the MKX represents Lincoln’s new hot-selling combo that is making dealers smile after a period of gloom. Ed Witt, owner of Witt Lincoln in San Diego, remarked that Lincoln was “starved and neglected.”

Ford and Lincoln will be among the carmakers deciding to pass on advertising during the broadcast of the Super Bowl. So far, only six brands -- BMW, Kia, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan and Toyota -- are expected to advertise during the big game while others have yet to confirm or declare plans. Eleven auto brands ran spots in the 2014 edition of the Super Bowl.

That year, Ford aired a pre-game commercial to push the Ford Fusion hybrid. On the other hand, Lincoln’s last spot in the big game was in 2013, when it allowed the Twitter community to “steer the script” through suggestions of how the ad should play out.

Matt VanDyke, director of global Lincoln, told Automotive News in November 2014 that the American luxury carmaker will not advertise in the 2015 Super Bowl, even though it has launched several high-profile campaigns in recent years.

Strong demand for the Cadillac Escalade SUV amid has prompted the carmaker to increase its output. According to Cadillac chief Johan de Nysschen, production of Escalades at GM’s Arlington, Texas, assembly site will be expanded to bring over 2,000 more SUVs – which means the luxury brand has an annual supply of 32,000 trucks.

In 2013, Cadillac managed to sell 30,469 MY2014-2015 Escalade and Escalade ESV models. Supply for the Escalade has been tight since its launch last year, with dealers saying that customers who purchased the SUV had to wait for a month or more before receiving their units since the vehicles were being held at the plant for quality inspections and last-minute fixes.

GM product chief Mark Reuss remarked that the carmaker has taken extra time to get the SUV’s hand-stitched interior right. “We’re learning how to make that at rate with high quality,” Reuss said.
