Cadillac confirms new rear-wheel-drive sedan and redesigned SRX

Dave Leone, Cadillac’s chief engineer, remarked that 2015 will be a "fantastic year” for the luxury brand while confirming plans for a new rear-wheel-drive sedan and a redesigned SRX crossover. Leone told Bloomberg in an interview ahead of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California that the sedan will have rear-wheel drive and will be rolled out in late 2015.

The carmaker unveiled an Elmiraj Concept that previewed such a car at Pebble Beach in 2013. General Motors has so far failed to match the pace of the auto industry in the United States.

Sales at Cadillac even dipped 2 percent while foreign luxury carmakers like Mercedes-Benz and BMW gained 9 percent and 12 percent, respectively. GM is banking on a larger line-up of passenger cars and the new SRX to capture luxury customers from BMW, Mercedes and Audi and from Lexus.

GM requested Delphi to redesign ignition switch for Cadillac SRX in 2006

Delphi redesigned the ignition switch for the Cadillac SRX to increase its torque around two months before it had the supplier make similar changes to the Chevrolet Cobalt ignition switch, a Delphi manager said in a letter to the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The manager said that the SRX modifications in February 2006 were in response to complaints by General Motors’ test drivers who said that a pre-production version could be accidentally turned off when their knee bumps the ignition switches. A document submitted with the letter shows that GM requested the changes.

A GM engineer signed off in April 2006 the use of a stronger detent plunger in the Cobalt’s ignition switch, which largely resolved an issue wherein the switch could shift into “accessory” mode while the car is moving. This would cut power steering and power brakes and would render airbags unable to deploy in a crash.

A five-star crash test rating was given by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to two 2012 Cadillac models (CTS sedan and wagon and SRX crossover). These recently announced top safety ratings from the U.S. safety regulators mean that GM now has a total of nine vehicles in its 2012 lineup that have the five-star rating.

The rest are the Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and the Chevrolet Cruze, Volt and Traverse. To date, the five-star rating for overall crash test performance has been given by the NHTSA to 21 vehicles that are set to be released under the 2012 model year range.

“Receiving five stars under the new rating system is an impressive feat – one that clearly demonstrates the strength of the SRX and CTS advanced structure, overall crashworthiness and effectiveness of the models’ state-of-the-art safety technologies,” said Gay Kent, GM executive director of Vehicle Safety.

The 2012 Cadillac SRX is equipped with the StabiliTrak system that helps prevent crashes. But there’s also a lesser known benefit. It removes water from brake components during wet highway driving conditions. This offers extra control in soggy conditions since Auto Dry Brakes can help enhance overall brake effectiveness during rainy conditions on the highway.

Auto Dry Brakes function with the SRX RainSense automatic windshield wiper system, or when the standard windshield wipers are operating and the SRX had been continuously moving at more than 20 mph for more than four miles without using the cruise control.

The StabiliTrak hardware generates a minimal amount of hydraulic pressure, pulsing pressure to its brake calipers at intervals to wipe water from the brake rotors while the car is running. GM said that when the rotors are drier, the brake system becomes more effective and provides a “more-assured stopping feel and better brake effectiveness in wet conditions.

General Motors has issued the recall of 50,500 units of its 2011 Cadillac SRX luxury crossover models because the performance of the front passenger airbag is different from the owner's manual. In the U.S., 47,401 vehicles are affected while the rest are in Canada and Mexico. GM said that there have been no reports of crashes or injuries because of this issue.

More than 22,000 each of the SRX and the CTS sedan models have been sold so far this year, making them the best-selling Cadillac models in the U.S.

From January to May, SRX sales have increased by 18%. GM said that the SRX air bags have been programmed to turn off the right side roof-rail airbag if there’s a front passenger. But in the owner’s manual, it states that the airbag will deploy whether this seat is occupied or not.

General Motors said that a new model will be added to the Cadillac brand beginning next month. GM is referring to a new 308hp 3.6L direct-injected V6 engine that features a driver-selectable ECO Mode for optimal fuel economy. The 2012 SRX has a starting price of $36,060 (inclusive of $875 destination charge).

Among the upgrades and revisions in the SRX for 2012 are standard Bluetooth on all models, an optional heated steering wheel, a xenon Blue Metallic exterior paint option that will start being available in fall 2011, an all-ebony interior option with contrasting stitching, and a new 20-inch wheel finish option.

It appears that poor sales made another victim in the car industry as General Motors decided to kill the SRX Turbo crossover. These words came from a Cadillac PR who confirmed that the SRX Turbo has been discontinued, after few dealerships speculated this fact.

Cadillac spokesman Robyn Henderson also added that over 90 percent of buyers who wanted a SRX crossover, went for the model powered by the 3.0-liter V6 engine.

The engine delivers 265 horsepower (198 kW) and is mated to a Hydra-Matic 6T70 six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control. SRX FWD models with the 3.0L engine are EPA-rated at 25 mpg on the highway.

General Motors has issued the recall of 111,136 Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain and Cadillac SRX vehicles, which are all from the 2011 model year. GM discovered that the seat belt buckle anchors are weak and may fail to perform as required in case of a crash. To date, there have been no reported injuries or deaths related to this defect.

In a press release, GM said that these vehicles were fitted with a seat belt buckle anchor with cracks that may lead to a fracture if the buckle is rotated in a certain way.

In a crash, this may contribute to peak seat belt loads. GM added that if the buckle anchor separates, the risk of injury increases as the seat belt system will no longer be able to restrain the occupant in a secondary impact.

According to the latest reports from Automotive News it appears that General Motors is quietly working on a plug-in hybrid vehicle based on its Cadillac SRX crossover.

This information came from two people with direct knowledge of the work, who also said that the new car will share some of the technology found on the 2011 Chevrolet Volt.

This means that General Motors will drop the costs of its emerging electric car offerings. Moreover, the new Cadillac plug-in means the relaunch of an abandoned project that GM had few years ago: to launch a rechargeable crossover vehicle wearing the Buick badge.
