Cadillac planning to build and sell ATS, CTS, XTS models in China

General Motors is planning to produce three Cadillac models in China, with hopes to follow in the success of the Buick brand in this country. According to The Detroit News, Cadillac will announce these plans at the Beijing Auto Show later this month. Cadillac will ultimately produce the ATS sport sedan, midsize CTS sedan, and executive XTS sedan in China.

Currently, there’s just one Cadillac model is in China -- the STS-based SLS executive sedan. Shanghai General Motors, a long-standing joint venture between General Motors and SAIC Motor Corp., is the producer of this vehicle. Since the SLS is built in China and not imported, the Chinese government can’t impose heavy tariffs on it. This means that there are major price differences in Chinese-market Cadillacs.

A 2012 Cadillac CTS that’s at the top of the line is priced at $57,555; however, Chinese-market models are priced at $71,032 after the import taxes and fees are included.

Cadillac celebrates 15 years of V-Series sub-brand with new 2019 Pedestal Editions

Before we knew its Cadillac’s V-Series sub-brand is already celebrating its 15 years of existence. To give this ultra-high-performance luxury sub-brand a fitting celebration, Cadillac is introducing limited run models to be dubbed as the 2019 Cadillac V-Series Pedestal Editions.

The 2019 Pedestal Edition will be applicable for the 2019 Cadillac ATS-V Coupe and the 2019 Cadillac CTS-V Super Sedan. Aside from celebrating the successful 15 years of the Cadillac V-Series sub brand, the 2019 Pedestal Edition serves as a grand farewell to the third generation of the V-Series. Soon enough, the fourth generation of the Cadillac V-Series would arrive, heralding a new era of luxury high-performance at Cadillac.

The Pedestal Editions of the 2019 Cadillac ATS-V Coupe and CTS-V Super Sedan are distinguished from their regular counterparts through a number of aesthetic modifications. 2018 Cadillac XTS gets new upgrades and now looks closer to a CT6

Cadillac again makes an effort to revive one of its oldest models, the XTS, for the 2018 model year. Last month, a couple of photos have been leaked which suggested that the large luxury sedan is leaning towards a more family friendly car with new design elements. But there is no need to speculate as we now have full details from the company.

The new photos that were released show that most of the noticeable upgrades are seen in the car’s front and rear fascia. In fact, a lot of people say that the XTS’ new look makes it look more like a CT6. The full-sized sedan now comes standard with LED headlights and taillights, with the headlights looking more angular. A new grille is now the focal point of the face. The company completes the exterior of the XTS with a new set of 19- and 20-inch wheels, and Brembo front brakes that come standard. What’s new for the car would be the optional Magnetic Ride Control as well as the Rear Air Leveling - both are firsts for the XTS. These features are meant to improve chassis dynamics and comfort, and also reduce noise.

Inside the cabin, customers have options such as the new Platinum-exclusive Maple Sugar and Jett Black trim to cover the interior with. And another upgrade the Cadillac XTS has been given is the next-generation infotainment system that none of the previous models have got. Every bit of the interior is wrapped in leather, complemented by a microfiber suede headliner, and premium wood trim. Overall, creating a luxurious and upscale atmosphere. That’s not all, the sound system has been upgraded to a new eight-speaker Bose audio system, and there are four USB ports where customers can charge their devices.

Cadillac rolls out next generation CUE with 2017 CTS

One of the main features that have appealed to Cadillac’s customers is its Cadillac User Experience system or CUE. This is once again expected to change as the brand recently revealed that it will be coming out with the next generation of its CUE system. Offering an interface that is more intuitive and more personalized, the new CUE is slated to make its official debut with the 2017 Cadillac CTS.

Customers in the U.S. market should expect this to arrive at their favorite dealerships within the first quarter. After the 2017 CTS, Cadillac will then be including this new system with 2018 XTS and the 2018 ATS. The brand disclosed that other product ranges will have the same system in their future model years.

Many are already familiar with this system but this next generation dynamic platform now allows modification over time in order to meet the connectivity needs of the customer, which itself is continuously evolving. In addition, it fully utilizes the Cloud to allow for better personalization. That said, connection navigation is still present and applications can be downloaded through the Collection app store.

Cadillac has learned the hard way that increasing the price of its CTS sedan in the United States would be a bad thing – as it contributed to the luxury brand’s sales decline last year. While the overall luxury car market surged 6 percent, Cadillac dropped 7 percent last year.

That drop came after hiked the sticker price of the MY2014 CTS by between $6,000 and $15,000. Most MY2015 CTS models will have sticker prices trimmed by between $1,000 and $3,000, according to a memo Cadillac sent to dealers.

In the memo, Cadillac said it reduced CTS prices "after receiving feedback from both dealers and customers." Dealers have complained that the luxury carmaker is trying to price its newer entries head-to-head with market leaders BMW and Mercedes-Benz, which has discouraged some returning customers for the brand.

Cadillac has seen sales of its redesigned CTS sedan fall 35 percent in August following a 29-percent drop in July. In fact, Cadillac dropped 18 percent in August in the US. This despite the presence of two known luxury car personalities tapped from other marques -- Uwe Ellinghaus of BMW and Johan de Nysschen of Audi.

Both are tasked to defend Cadillac from German luxury brands in the United States, and both understand why the marque is losing sales. Ellinghaus told Bloomberg in an interview that Cadillac may have been "too ambitious" in increasing prices on the redesigned CTS.

To justify that price to customers, Cadillac mulls adding features like heated seats. To raise its appeal to customers next year, Cadillac is making "significant changes" to the brand's marketing in the first quarter of 2015.

GM revealed the 2015 Cadillac CTS in an OnStar commercial but waited until today to release the official photos and details today. As you can see from the photos, the 2015 Cadillac CTS arrives with the redesigned front grille featuring the new Cadillac crest, Galvano chrome finish on the base model grille and black chrome finish on the Vsport grille.

The vehicle is available as standard with active aero grille shutters on base, Luxury and Performance Collections (these are not included when the Driver Assist package is slected on Performance Collection). Moreover, the 2015 CTS sedan arrives with illuminating door handles featuring Galvano polished aluminum finish, automatic windshield wipers with rain sensors with Driver Awareness package.

As standard, the 2015 CTS is available with 17-inch wheels, but as an option Cadillac offers 18- and 19-inch wheels. According to the press release, the 2015 Cadillac CTS is available with a choice of ten exterior colors: Dark Adriatic Blue Metallic (new), Crystal White Tricoat (new), Red Obsession Tintcoat, Phantom Grey Metallic, Majestic Plum Metallic, Radiant Silver Metallic, Black Raven, Black Diamond Tricoat, Opulent Blue Metallic and Silver Coast Metallic.

Things are not working quite well for General Motors as the American carmaker recalled millions of vehicles in order to fix a defective ignition switch. And the bad news continue to come because General Motors has just told its dealers to halt sales of some Cadillac models, most used cars.

The reason is that the company doesn’t yet have a fix in place for the defective ignition switch. GM issued an urgent order on July 8 when it stopped delivery of 2014 Cadillac CTS sedans fitted with a standard key ignition. The models using the new push-button start system have no problem.

In the notice that became public after NHTSA posted the document as part of its continuing investigation of GM vehicle recalls, the American company also told its dealers not to sell 2003-2013 CTS models but also 2004-2006 Cadillac SRX models.

The 2015 Cadillac CTS didn’t make its official debut yet, but General Motors already featured the vehicle in its latest OnStar commercial. The first thing we saw was the redesigned front grille and the new Cadillac crest that was first featured on the 2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe. In the commercial, the 2015 Cadillac CTS highlights the OnStar with 4G LTE, which turns it into a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Featuring the new dark Adriatic Blue and Cristal White (replacing the White Diamond) exterior paint options, the 2015 Cadillac CTS promises to bring SMS text messaging, Lane Change Alert and Lane Keep Assist.

Under the hood, we expect to see the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 272 hp (203 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque, bolted to the paddle-shift eight-speed transmission.

The redesigned 2014 Cadillac CTS sedan is in "another postal code” compared to the previous CTS, General Motors chief executive Dan Akerson remarked to Automotive News. However, some of Cadillac’s loyal customers have started complaining about the differences between the new and old CTS.

According to Akerson, some Cadillac customers have said that the stiffer, firmer suspensions in the new CTS are more performance oriented – different from the nice and smooth ride the older CTS offered. Akerson remarked that the nice and smooth Cadillac ride is now gone as the luxury market is now defined by “taut, tight cars.”

He remarked that Cadillac wants to compete as a global brand so it has to appeal to a much broader potential marketplace.

General Motors is hoping that the relatively strong residual value of its 2014 Cadillac CTS would help it sell more of the redesigned luxury sedan. The ALG research firm assigned last week an average forecasted residual of 48 percent after 36 months to the CTS – stronger than the average residual value of its peers (46 percent) and the residual value of the 2013 CTS (41 percent).

The 2014 CTS models are expected to cost between $6,000 and $16,000 more than comparable 2013 models. Eric Lyman, ALG's vice president of residual value solutions, remarked that, typically, nameplates whose prices have significantly surged do not retain their resale values well. He remarked that the residual value of the CTS didn’t go down despite higher prices thanks to the improvements made on the new generation.

Lyman, however, said that he is unsure whether Cadillac will be able to command those prices without resorting to incentives that may damage the brand's value.

Executives at Cadillac reiterated that the CTS carries the brand's true identity, in response to the acclamations and accolades made on the new ATS compact sedan.  The third-generation 2014 Cadillac CTS will arrive at dealerships in October and is expected to show how much the US luxury carmaker has done in its bid to surpass its German premium rivals.

The redesigned CTS is now underpinned by a new platform -- General Motors' lightweight rwd Alpha platform that also underpins the ATS -- that rendered it lighter than the Mercedes-Benz E class, BMW 5 series or any other mid-sized luxury sedan. It also boasts of better handling and fuel efficiency than the outgoing CTS, despite the addition of content. 

The new platform makes the redesigned CTS 5 inches longer than the outgoing version, boosting space in the rear seat. The new CTS is also almost 250 pounds lighter than the outgoing version, thanks to the use of aluminum in the doors and engine cradle, as well as other mass-saving measures.

GM announced that the 2014 Cadillac XTS will receive an optional Twin Turbo V6 engine. Starting in August, the 2014 XTS luxury performance sedan will get the 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 that delivers an SAE-certified 410 horsepower (306 kW) and 369 lb-ft of torque (500 Nm), making it the most power-dense six-cylinder engines among luxury cars.

Comparing it with the standard V6, the new engine delivers 105 lb-ft more torque. In both the CTS and XTS product lines, the twin turbo V6 is the centerpiece of a new model offering called Vsport. The Vsport is slotted under the high-performance V-Series models and includes best-performing technical elements inside the “regular” car line in a single model, powered by Twin Turbo engine.

The standard 2014 Cadillac XTS starts at 45,525, including destination fees, which is unchanged from 2013. For this amount of money you get the standard 3.6L V6 engine that makes 306 hp, CUE, intelligent brake assist and Magnetic Ride Control. Three option packages are available: Luxury, Premium and Platinum Collections.

General Motors announced today that the all-new 2014 Cadillac CTS will carry a price tag of $46,025, including $925 destination. Still, this is for the 2014 CTS standard model. The new CTS will be available in three collections of option packages – Luxury, Performance and Premium- each offered with either the 2.0T turbocharged four cylinder or the bigger 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V6 engine in either rear- or all-wheel drive.

As expected, the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine found on the 2014 CTS delivers 272 horsepower and zooms from zero to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds, which is 1.5 seconds faster than the outgoing model. As standard, the car will receive 17-inch Brembi brakes with ferritic-nitro carburizing, or FNC, anti-corrosion rotors. Magnetic Ride Control is now standard on base models with 18-inch wheels.

Moreover, the CTS offers three driving modes: for touring, ice and snow, or sport driving. The bigger 3.6-liter V6 engine delivers 420 hp and gets a “track” drive mode with specific Magnetic Ride Control calibration and enhanced throttle progression for greater track performance. The sportier Vsport model comws with the all-new Twin Turbo V6 and starts at $59,995, including $925 destination.

Mary Barra, senior vice president for Global Product Development at General Motors, was conferred Wednesday by the Society of Automotive Engineering Foundation with the 2013 Industry Leadership Award. This makes Barra the first woman recipient of the award in its 25 years of history.

The award comes as Barra disclosed that the carmaker would donate the first production 2014 Cadillac CTS Vsport -- including a performance driving school package -- to the SAE Foundation.

CTS Vsport, the first Cadillac to feature an eight-speed automatic transmission, is underpinned by the high-performance ATS architecture and is powered by a Twin-Turbo V-6 engine. Barrett-Jackson will hold a live auction later this year, with proceeds going to the SAE Foundation for its science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) student outreach programs.

Cadillac is optimistic that its redesigned 2014 Cadillac CTS sedan and maybe even a new coupe will be able to attract consumers away from BMW and Mercedes-Benz models. Cadillac's global marketing boss boasted about the success of the current CTS coupe but he won’t confirm whether the coupe and wagon will go back to the CTS model line.

However, it’s believed that Cadillac is seriously considering a plan to expand the CTS lineup. When interviewed by Edmunds at the 2013 New York Auto Show, Jim Vurpillat, Cadillac global marketing director, said that the current CTS coupe was named the top-selling luxury coupe so this is a “good segment.”

The 2014 CTS is the latest sedan from Cadillac. The rear-drive car made its debut at the 2013 New York Auto Show and it’s set to begin selling this fall. The current CTS is aimed at Mercedes-Benz and BMW models but it actually didn’t hurt its rival models’ buyer bases. In 2012, Cadillac sold around 47,000 CTS units. On the other hand, the BMW 5 Series sold nearly 57,000 and Mercedes sold slightly higher than 66,000 E-Class models.

Cadillac announced that the 2014 CTS will receive a new Twin-Turbo V-6 engine bolted to an eight-speed transmission. Set to make its debut later this month at the 2013 New York Auto Show, the new 3.6-liter Twin-Turbo V6 engine will deliver 420 hp (313 kW) and 430 lb.-ft. of torque (583 Nm). According to the official press release, this is the most powerful V6 engine ever from General Motors.

Moreover, GM says that the new engine has 15 percent greater power density than BMW 535i’s turbocharged 3.0L six, which delivers 300 hp (223 kW). Moreover, GM says that its new engine is even better than the BMW 550i’s TwinPower 4.4L V-8, rated at 400 horsepower (298 kW). With the new engine, the 2014 Cadillac CTS is capable to sprint form 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 4.6 seconds and has a top speed of 170 mph (274 km/h).

The 2014 Cadillac CTS will also be available with the naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V6 rated at 321 hp, but also with the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine rated at 272 hp.

Cadillac celebrates a milestone this week – the start of production of the new XTS luxury sedan in China. Aside from the Shanghai production, the XTS is also assembled in Oshawa, Ontario. This output is the most significant expansion move since Cadillac arrived in China, the world’s largest market, in 2006.

Bob Ferguson, vice president Global Cadillac, said that this growth in the local assembly of the brand in China occurs together with the strong momentum of its new product lineup and major dealership expansion too. Cadillac China’s dealer network has increased to over 150 locations, increasing by about twice its number in the last year.

Cadillac expects to have a total of 250 outlets within the next two years. In 2012, the brand reported sales of 30,000 units in China in 2012. It aims to reach or even surpass 100,000 units sold each year by 2015. The Cadillac XTS redefines the large luxury sedan via advanced technology like standard Magnetic Ride Control, the innovative CUE system for connectivity and control and sophisticated safety systems.

Cadillac's new ATS compact sedan has yet to steal sales away from its target rivals, which include the BMW 3 series. Rather, the ATS is sinking its bigger sibling, the Cadillac CTS. The new ATS was launched in September. But CTS sales in October 2012 fell by 40% when compared to sales in October 2011. According to, potential ATS buyers typically consider the CTS too.

Fortunately for Cadillac, the 3 Series is also on the buyers’ list. Cadillac's U.S. sales chief Chase Hawkins explained that this overlap is expected when a new nameplate enters a lineup. However, he emphasized that General Motors is prepared for this occurrence. Hawkins added that GM will cut back on its CTS output next year so that CTS sedans and coupes won’t pile up on dealer lots.

This also prevents GM from attaching huge incentives or dumping them into rental fleets. GM had done these in the past and until today, the Cadillac brand has yet to totally recover. Hawkins said that it was in their plans for ATS to attract some CTS customers.
