BMW wants no bad media reviews for the all-new 3-Series G20

BMW regards the latest generation – the seventh – of the 3 Series as its pride. After all, the 3 Series represents one of the cores of its sales, being one of the best-selling models at BMW. Thus, it is only natural for the company or its people to react if bad things are to be said about the all-new 3 Series.

Klaus Frohlich, the head of development at BMW, seemingly has been tired of hearing auto journalist and other people comparing the fifth and sixth generation of the 3 Series to the fourth generation. The fourth-gen 3 Series – with the codename E46 – has been regarded as the last true 3 Series, bearing the attributes that defined this model such as sportiness and dynamism as well as luxury and elegance. Many consider the generations after the E46 – like the E90 and the F30 – as not living up to the promise of the 3 Series.

Now, Frohlich is having none any of the complaints saying that the latest generation of the BMW 3 Series – the G20 – as inferior to the 3 Series E46. These bad reviews would be injustice to BMW’s development team headed by Frohlich. After all, the bad reviews on the E90 and F30 generations were what prompted BMW to make the newest generation much better, even surpassing the E46 models. In its press release for the all-new 3 Series, the carmaker said that the all signature characteristics of a BMW -- modern design, agile handling, exceptional efficiency and innovative features -- have been raised to a higher level.

A classic driving experience is waiting for Jaguar Land Rover fans at the UK’s Eastnor Castle

Jaguar Land Rover fans can now drive some of the marque’s most classic vehicles. The automaker just launched a classic driving experience that will be held at Eastnor Castle, Herefordshire, UK. For a price, customers are eligible to spend the whole day test-driving classic models including the Jaguar E-Type, Land Rover Series I, and even their most famous 4x4s. Other models include the Range Rover Classic, Series I and Series III (introduced in 1971)

But that is not all. There will also be a selection of sportier cars from their sister company, Jaguar, such as the XK150 from the late 1950s, the Series I E-Type from the 1960s, a Series III E-Type from the 70s and another famous model, the Mk2.

To take part in this event, customers will have to be willing to spend £495 (around $647). As mentioned earlier, this will happen in and around Eastnor Castle estate, which is also where the automaker develops their modern off-roaders. Customers will be able to experience driving the company’s current models on the dirt tracks and the challenging slopes around the estate as well. While the company is allowing the public to drive their heritage models on off-road courses, Jaguar vehicles will only be allowed on metalled roads.

New Ford police vehicles – hybrid sedan and F-150 – are now pursuit rated

In 2011, Ford announced the retirement of certain vehicles including the Ford Crown Victoria, the Police Interceptor Sedan that is based on the Ford Taurus, and the Explorer-based Police Interceptor Utility - vehicles that served as options for many police forces around the United States. But just recently, Ford introduced the Police Responder Hybrid Sedan and the new F-150 Police Responder to further expand its range. And both models are now pursuit rated.

To become a pursuit rated vehicle, the car must go through a test that includes driving 32 laps around the Grattan Raceway. Undergoing these laps evaluates the vehicles’ features such as its durability, pertaining to how its powertrain, suspension, brake, and tire systems perform.

After going through tests, the Police Responder Hybrid Sedan, which we first heard of in April, did better than the Crown Victoria when it comes to efficiency, and it is faster too. The former returns an EPA-estimated mile per gallon rating of 40 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 38 mpg combined, while the latter does 16 mpg city, 24 mpg highway and 19 mpg combined rating.

Bloomberg recently published a report regarding the banning of vehicles with internal combustion engines in California. Air Resources chairman of the board Mary Nichols said state officials have already stated their interest in putting an end to the sales of pollution-causing automobiles in a bid for cleaner air.

California is considered amongst the most environmentally-aware states, accounting for over 2 million of car sales, in the entire US in the previous year. Following the recent announcements made by other countries, Nichols went on by saying that Governor Jerry Brown had been sending messages concerning his thoughts on the issue. Brown is in fact one of the most plain-spoken US officials who has expressed strong interest in combating climate change.

If ICE vehicles are to be banned in California, Nichols thinks the current administration will not approve of it if done via an EPA waiver. That, in spite it is legal for them to do so. Nichols added it is more feasible by imposing new vehicle registration guidelines instead. However, she also said that the earliest implementation of such ban may be at least ten years from now.

Kia is taking things a step further with the new Kia Stinger, which they first introduced at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show. With the specs given to us by the company, it seems like the sports sedan will be at par with Mercedes and BMW’s new offerings.

Firstly, the said model has been equipped with a powerful 3.3 liter biturbo V6 engine, which is capable of producing as much as 365 horsepower (272 kilowatts). To prove those numbers, the company decided to take the Stinger out for a drive at no other than the Nurburgring. One thing we know is that only the good sports sedans head to that track to prove themselves worthwhile.

So, the Kia Stinger proved itself right as it went through 480 laps and over 6,200 miles (10,000 kilometers) around the Nurburgring in a span of a few weeks. But that’s not all, as the diesel-powered Stinger also sprinted around the Green Hell for double the distance - that is 12,400 miles (20,000 kilometers). We owe thanks to the Kia designers and engineers for ensuring that the aerodynamically sport sedans were made to perform as we expect them to. With all that mileage used up during the test phase, we are pretty confident with the Kia Stinger’s stamina.

Hyundai revealed that it is offering customers more options to drive the Ioniq EV. Back in November, the brand revealed that it was offering a subscription plan and now it has disclosed just how much this will cost.

The lowest appears to be a monthly fee of $275 plus tax for a total of 36 months. However, it does require you to put in a down payment amounting to $2,500. But if you happen to buy the Ioniq EV in California, the state offers a rebate totaling $2,500. This makes sense considering that Hyundai will only be making this subscription plan available in California. Take note though that it will not cover the entire state as for now it will only include three counties: Riverside, Orange, and Los Angeles. The brand did say that later this year this subscription will be offered in San Diego and Northern California.

There will be three trims offered. The base model is the Electric trim. The other two are Limited, which costs $305 plus tax, and the Limited with the Ultimate Package, offered at $365 plus tax. Assuming that all trims will have the “zero-money” down initiation fee plus the fact that customers will be required to get a three-year subscription, this means that Electric trim can go as high as $9,900. For the Limited it will be $10,980, and the Ultimate Package will come at $13,140.

California has a resourceful goal of having all new homes produce "zero net energy" by the year 2020, it roughly translates to producing at least as much energy as they can consume. Now the Elon Musk-headed company is no longer only selling electric vehicles, but renewable energy sources as well. And now Tesla has its only production factory in the city of Fremont.

The California-based energy company is venturing on a new business by the latter part of this year- the solar roof business, and this further undertaking will be initially observed at the homes located in the vicinity of the company's main factory. This is all due to the ordinance passed by the city council of Fremont, California on May 2 that firmly requires newly constructed houses and apartment complexes to install solar roof panels. The decision will work with a measure dating back from October that will require new construction to install mandatory wiring to be able to charge electric vehicles. The prescribed solar cell size will differ based on the size of the structure, and the ordinance necessitates an installation location that augments exposure to the sun.

Rachel DiFranco, Fremont's sustainability coordinator, said that they have over 5,000 electric vehicle drivers found in Fremont and they would like to observe if the drivers preferring an electric vehicle would increase and double over the next handful of years. Moreover, there’s also a call to obtain permission to install the cells found on the ground or one can utilize a wind turbine as a substitute. The state's building standards and energy commissions urge to approve the plan before all of it becomes official while this ordinance is through the city government. The process may take a few months, according to the local East Bay Times newspaper.

The BMW New Class of automobiles are considered as adorable boxy premiums. It was a generation of automobiles produced around 1962 and 1977 that has spawned the BMW 2002, which is treated as a must-have for the loyal BMW patrons. The New Class cars consists of models that include the 1500, 1600, 1800 and 2000 models- the last of which gave us the coveted 2002.

2002's powerful 2.0 L 4-cylinder engine and its lightweight features proved to be irresistible to many car enthusiasts. Moreover, it’s difficult to find these cars in good shape because there’s intense competition in getting the amazing models. The so-so models will require plenty of modifications to be considered at par.

Now, the American comedian Jay Leno has brought this modded 2000 beauty in his garage. This particular BMW 2002 was made by the Bavarian Workshop, and the automobile was built for a certain customer who preferred to see their father's car restored back to its former glory. The automobile was not driven for many years, but nevertheless was in a good shape. This made it the perfect candidate to be modified.

The Tesla Model S has finally arrived in South Korean soil and is now available for test drive. But, there’s a catch. You’ll have to wait several months if you were not one of the first few hundreds to sign up for the test-drive.

What I mean is that if you purchase a Tesla Model S online or at the showroom, there is a higher chance of you getting your vehicle way ahead of time, than you getting that 20- to 30-minute test drive. In fact, the wait list is so long that it would take six months for those who signed up last. And nope, that was not a typing error when I wrote six months.

The reason behind this is that Tesla only has two showrooms in South Korea, and both of them are fairly new. Each showroom can only accommodate around 10 test drives per day, giving each person the chance to take the car out for a drive for about 20-30 mins. So, ten times two, that’s just twenty people per day for the whole nation. Having said that, there’s probably around 3,600 people in line to test drive the Model S. And the only way to fix that problem is for Tesla to open more showrooms, or to accommodate more people per day.

When Lexus unveiled the LC 500 luxury sports coupe, it proved to the world that it is brave enough to reinvent itself. Well, it was not long ago when Lexus was considered as a premium brand that has become utterly boring. That could be because Lexus has been creating premium cars with similar designs, similar cues and similar values.

We couldn’t blame Toyota’s luxury brand for doing that. Lexus spent not just years, but decades of building a reputation for high quality and very reliable vehicles. With this, Lexus was able to experience a surge of success. But its own achievements were what made Lexus quite hard-headed about reinventing itself to become a premium manufacturer of also sporty and exciting luxury cars.

Enter the Lexus 500 luxury sports coupe. This flagship coupe is the company’s strongest statement – so far -- regarding the future direction of its production line. It is bound to influence Lexus’ lineup better than the Lexus LFA sports car. While the luxury brand during recent years has been introducing new models like the IS, NX, and RC -- all of which boast of high levels of emotion – the LC 500 is a personification of performance, luxury and athleticism and style.

The race for delivering street-wise autonomous vehicles is heating up as Mercedes-Benz recently received permission from the German government to conduct on-the-road tests of its experimental units.

This isn’t the first time that Mercedes-Benz was granted permission to test its autonomous vehicles. However, the latest approval involves the next generation of the carmaker’s autonomous prototypes, now installed with its newest software dubbed as Daimler Autonomous Vehicle Operating System (DAVOS). These autonomous prototypes are derived from the Mercedes-Benz V-Class (Viano) mid-size passenger van. These test vehicles are fitted with advanced Lidar sensors to allow the DAVOS software to do its work. DAVOS employs a graphic processor and deep-learning technologies to perform as expected.

With these technical specs, these new autonomous prototypes should be able to theoretically operate by themselves. However, two specially trained drivers will be on board each test car for safety reasons. By having these prototypes deployed in real-world conditions, Mercedes engineers would be able to fine-tune the DAVOS software.

Uber was very thrilled that it was finally testing its self-driving vehicles in California. However, the thrill failed to last long, as regulators in the state seek to stop the company from doing such tests due to lack of necessary permits. To make matters worse, two of Uber’s self-driving vehicles were caught running red light in San Francisco, California.

Uber has been running its ride-hailing operations in San Francisco – where its headquarters is also located – since 2011. It recently ventured into self-driving ride-hailing vehicles, which made their debut in September 2016 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After a few months, Uber commenced operations of its self-driving vehicles in San Francisco this week using camera-fitted Volvo XC90 seven-seater SUVs. Uber’s XC90 units are very fairly easy to notice to recognize thanks to the prominent mount on its rooftop. Uber’s self-driving rides could be good news, considering that the autonomous vehicle has been becoming a key point of future mobility. But maybe not for Uber.

It turned out that Uber failed to – or more so intently didn’t – secure any permit from the state of California to bring its self-driving Volvo XC90 units on the streets for testing. Companies wishing to have their autonomous or self-driving vehicles ply the streets in California need to secure permit to do so from the state, in particular from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). According to DMV, such permit need to be secured in order to ensure public safety as autonomous technology is being tested.

Black Friday is often regarded as a great day for consumers in a number of areas in the United States, including California. This is particularly because on this specific day of the year – a day just after Thanksgiving – companies are racing to offer the lowest prices and the best deals available.

A Fiat dealership – Orange Coast Fiat in Costa Mesa, California -- is riding on this wave by offering the new Fiat 500e all-electric hatchback for lease for just $49 per month. Yes, the good people of California could avail of this lease for less than $50 a month, good for 36 months. Additional good news is that those who availed of this lease don’t have to shell out anything as a down payment.

However, this promo is only a “Limited Inventory” lease, which means only a few units will be available. Of course, this promo is – so far – available only at Orange Coast Fiat and there has been no news yet of other Fiat dealers offering a similar deal. Does the future of heavy-duty hauling involve hydrogen cells? Too early to say for now, but it is not impossible. In fact, this possibility is being researched on by one of the pioneers of hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicles in the world – Japanese auto giant Toyota Motor Corp.

Interestingly, Toyota’s first fuel cell vehicle now out in the auto market is called Mirai, which is derived from the Japanese term for “future.” In a sense, the Mirai jumpstarts Toyota’s battle-cry for the future of mobility. The Mirai also expresses the carmaker’s confidence that consumers would accept hydrogen as a clean fuel alternative in the next five years.

The Mirai employs the so-called Toyota Fuel Cell System (TFCS) that boasts of the combination of fuel cell technology and hybrid technology, making use fuel cell (FC) stack, high-pressure hydrogen tanks and FC boost converter. This FCV could be completely refilled with hydrogen in around three minutes and that already allows the Mirai to travel up to a distance of around 300 km or 186 miles.

When it comes to being the top crossover, there are only two models that can confidently say they have been in the market for at least 20 years. This is the CR-V from Honda and the RAV4 from Toyota. It really does not come as a surprise to know why these two are also the most popular.

Many are likely familiar with the fact that utility vehicles had a start during the 1970s with the 4x4s. However as more customers demanded vehicles that offer better ride, displays improved fuel economy, and comes with the latest in infotainment and electronic systems, this has led to crossovers entering the market.

For the 2017 CR-V in particular, Consumer Reports reveals that while the prior generation had a rather bland interior, the new version has a cabin that is not only plush, but classy as well. According to Honda, when they developed the new CR-V, they wanted a crossover utility vehicle that would be fitting for the upmarket. It is no wonder then that the 2017 CR-V not only has a cabin that is quieter but it is also a model that delivers a better ride. This was a result of two things with the first being an excellent usage of noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) engineering and the second the inclusion of an active noise cancelling system. Honda however was apparently not done with this as the brand managed to give the CR-V a more enjoyable drive by using qualities previously seen on the Civic.

After British brand Bentley Motors became a part of Volkswagen in 1998, the first model that it came out with was the Bentley Continental Grand Tourer (GT). It has been produced in volumes since 2003 – the first Bentley really to be given the mass-production treatment. Notably, it shares a platform with the Volkswagen Phaeton. It could be differentiated from the previous Continental R & T models by looking at how it was conceptualized.

It’s believed that Bentley’s transformation into a major brand known all over the world is largely credited to the success of the Continental GT. It isn’t a coach-built vehicle and while it is mass-produced, a substantial part of the entire process is still accomplished by hand. By doing this, Bentley was able to sell it in a much lower price – approximately half of the cost of a Continental R.

Because of its affordability, it drew in plenty of new customers from a wider demographic. It was at the Geneva Motor Show in 2003 that the Continental GT was introduced. The first-generation Continental GTC received excellent reviews and its elegance impressed consumers as well as the important players in the auto industry. The excitement for this new grand tourer was mostly centered on its impeccable silhouette – a trademark of Bentley’s famed convertible range.
