General Motors has issued a recall of 218,000 Chevrolet Aveo cars (model years 2004-2008) in the United States due to a possible fire risk, according to documents filed with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The Aveo recall came a day after GM issued callbacks covering 2.6 million vehicles around the world, although most of them were in the US. GM is recalling the Aveos in question as their daytime running lights could overheat and result to a fire, according to NHTSA documents.
GM issued four separate recalls of 2.42 million vehicles in the US. The Aveo recall brings the number of recall since start of 2014 to 30 and the number of called back vehicles in the US to 13.8 million. Some vehicles were recalled more than once over multiple potential safety defects.Read the entire article GM is recalling 218,000 older-generation Chevrolet Aveo cars over fire risk
General Motors Co. is planning to launch the new Chevrolet Spark minicar in 2015 but will postpone the rollout its revamped Aveo subcompact from that year, according to South Korean labor union spokesman. Union spokesman Choi Jong-hak remarked that GM Korea has advised them that it will produce the next Spark and Aveo cars in South Korea, dismissing local industry worries that the American carmaker may shift some output of the models out of the Asian country.
Choi said GM Korea's management told union negotiators of its plans during annual wage talks that ended last week. GM Korea builds and exports the Spark and Aveo -- also known as Matiz and Sonic respectively -- to the United States, Europe and other countries. GM Korea also produces knock-down kits for assembly in Uzbekistan and other countries. GM Korea’s Chngwon site is building the Spark while its Bupyeong headquarters is producing the Aveo.
According to GM Korea, it sold 215,177 Spark at in its home turf and abroad in 2012. The unit added that exports accounted for nearly 70 percent of the Spark sales. The Spark accounted for 20,320 units out of Chevrolet's 74,384 sales in Europe in the first half of 2013, according to JATO Dynamics market researchers, making it the brand best-selling model in the region.Read the entire article New Chevrolet Spark will debut in 2015, revamped Aveo delayed
General Motors Co.’s labor union in South Korea has threatened to launch a strike action in response to the carmaker’s disclosure that it will not build the next-generation Aveo small car at the country for the time being. Sergio Rocha, the head of GM Korea, told the union that the carmaker had decided to produce the new Aveo in China and the United States.
South Korea will have a chance to build the model two years after its launch, the union said in a statement. GM’s decision comes amid wage discussions between the carmaker and its South Korean workforce, giving rise to fears that the company will reduce its presence in the country.
The union described GM’s decision as a “shocking announcement." The union added that it would launch a strike if it fails to ink an agreement with GM management over wages and future production plans this month.Read the entire article GM has no plans to produce the next-generation Aveo in South Korea

Children’s charities are the beneficiaries of the adventure that a Chevrolet Aveo will take on July 14 as it leaves the Goodwood motor circuit to get to the Mongol Rally adventure. The Aveo's FIRST Mongol Rally Team will go on a no-backup, no support, no-set-route adventure of over 9,000 miles. The 1.2L Aveo small car will have to move past obstacles like mountains, deserts, awful roads, no roads, and even bandits.
The Aveo will be driven by a rally team with not much experience or car knowledge. The three members in the rally team are composed of Guy White (an experienced marketing manager), Ed Kliphuis (an investment banker), and Arnout Schepers (developmental biology researcher).
Guy White said that he considers it a “perfect combination” to drive through a third of the world, meet amazing people, and stock memories. It was three years ago that the team first met on a rugby field in Geneva. They’re collecting donations for SOS Children's Villages in Mongolia where the Aveo will also be donated. They also hope to promote interaction opportunities for this good cause. Chevrolet UK has challenged local amateur and semi-professional rugby clubs across the country to squeeze as many of their athletes as possible into the New Aveo for a chance to win new kit and rugby items for their team. They can do the challenge at any of the dealerships all over the United Kingdom.
The automaker will host a league table of participating clubs through its Facebook account at facebook.com/chevroletuk in order to determine how many players can get inside the Aveo -- a vehicle marketed to be much bigger on the inside compared to its appearance from the outside. By the end of this year, the league tables will be gathered to determine the overall winner.
Mark Terry, who is managing director at Chevrolet UK, commented that this challenge is a "great opportunity" for the local rugby clubs to "get themselves in the news" during the close season as well as to "keep their competitive spirit going" through the summer. He added that this is also a "great way" to show the "incredibly flexible" interior space of the Aveo, but he cautioned that driving with a full rugby team in the vehicle is not recommended.Read the entire article Chevrolet challenges rugby clubs to fit as many players possible into Aveo
Euro NCAP has named the Chevrolet Aveo as the “best in class” in 2011 for the supermini segment, after the car earned high safety scores from judges. The Aveo gained 85 out of a possible 100 Euro NCAP points, topping its segment. The car particularly impressed Euro NCAP judges with its key safety features, bagging 95 points in the adult occupant protection criterion, and 87 points in the child occupant protection gauge. The Aveo is fitted with six standard airbags that are linked to the sensors installed at the center of the vehicle. The car also features a child-seat latching system.
The Aveo’s active safety features include electronic stability control, traction control, a four-channel anti-lock braking system with brake assist, and electronic brake force distribution. The supermini is also installed with a hill-start assist and cruise control and speed limiter function "We take safety very seriously at Chevrolet and this class-leading result for the New Chevrolet Aveo proves this entirely," said Mark Terry, Managing Director of Chevrolet UK.
Terry added that company’s whole model line-up provides faultless safety credentials, the majority of which has achieved a five star rating. Terry remarked that these safety features bring “great peace of mind” to its customers.Read the entire article Euro NCAP names supermini Chevrolet Aveo as “Best in Class” tested in 2011
The new Chevrolet Aveo is scheduled to reach showrooms in January, with excellent value pricing to complement its stunning appearance. Starting only at £9,995 for the 1.2 LS model, the Aveo develops Chevrolet’s track record of providing great value for money. However, it is more than just the great pricing that will attract buyers to it.
Featuring its remarkable sculpted front end design and magnificent wedge-shaped profile, the New Aveo delivers a sharp, edgy feel to the supermini segment. Chevrolet UK Managing Director Mark Terry commented that they want to take the image of compact vehicles away from "being cute and cuddly,” the same way they did to the Spark.
He added that the latest model draws on the company's legendary models like the Corvette and Camaro "for its styling influence, with cues such as the distinctive round headlamps and dual-cockpit interior giving it a lot more personality than you’d normally find in this sector of the market.” Even in fundamental trim, the Aveo receives attributes like a rear spoiler, remote locking, electrically adjustable heated door mirrors, CD-stereo radio and electric front windows.Read the entire article 2012 Chevrolet Aveo priced from £9,995 in the UK
There’s a lot to say about the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic but what the automaker wants to emphasize is that it isn’t anything like the Aveo, the brand's previous subcompact. Margaret Brooks, Chevrolet product marketing director, said that Sonic is an all-new car with an “all-new architecture, all-new powertrain, all-new name.”
Chevrolet said that the Sonic is described in one key word: Refinement. Chevrolet developed a stiff body structure using high-strength and ultra-high-strength steels. Joaquin Nuno-Whelan, vehicle line director and chief engineer, said that the company set it to have the “right stiffness” so that the driver will have a “solid, quiet feel” as the car goes down the street. Chevrolet took some cues from Buick to lessen or cut certain noises from the passenger compartment.
Noise and vibration are minimized with the use of hydraulic engine mounts. Nuno-Whelan said that an acoustic dash mat together with an acoustic package under the carpeting and over the headliner is part of its strategy to lead the segment when it comes to achieving quiet. He said that triple door seals are used where needed.Read the entire article GM says is really nothing in common between Chevrolet Sonic and Aveo
Among the vehicles that Chevrolet will debut in Europe at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show is the new four-door Aveo Sedan. The 2012 Sonic, the car’s US version, had its world debut at the Detroit Motor Show in January. Chevrolet tuned the Aveo’s chassis so that European buyers will get improved handling, a characteristic that originates from the car’s tight body frame integral (BFI) structure.
The car will get the following standard equipment: McPherson strut front suspension, Electronic power steering (EPS), electronic stability control (ESC) and ABS brakes.
The European engine range will have four cylinder petrol and diesel units that feature variable valve timing, double continuous variable cam phasing and common rail fuel injection for the diesels.Read the entire article 2012 Chevrolet Aveo Sedan to make European debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show
According to the latest reports from Autocar, it appears that Chevrolet is determined to enter the baby SUV and will build a new five-seater based on the 2011 Aveo, which was recently unveiled at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The car is being designed and engineered in Korea by GM Dat and will make its debut by 2012.
Still, the designs of the car have yet to be finalized, but according to some GM execs that have seen the clay model of the car at the Korean research and development centre, the vehicle uses a stretched Aveo platform and will be offered in both four wheel drive and front-drive guises.
As expected, the design will borrow the same philosophy as the new-generation Chevrolet models, while the interior design will follow the dual cockpit design seen on the 2011 Cruze. Some interior details will be borrowed from the Opel Astra and Insignia.Read the entire article Chevrolet working on a baby SUV based on Aveo
In another attempt to appeal to Japanese buyers with its small cars, General Motors Co. intends to sell the Korea-built Chevrolet Aveo in Japan next fall. The latest-generation Aveo, which recently debuted at the Paris Auto Show, has a sportier look that is targeted at younger buyers.
GM is hoping that this subcompact as an entry model would reel in Japanese customers to consider its upmarket models such as the Chevrolet Camaro and Corvette.
Earlier this month, Sumito Ishii, managing director of GM Asia Pacific Japan, said that the Aveo will “appeal to those looking for a sporty image, people in their 20s or 30s who love the Camaro or Corvette but can't afford those models.”Read the entire article GM plans to bring the Chevrolet Aveo in Japan next year

Chevrolet wants people to throw out any perceptions they may have about small cars as it wants to reinvent this segment with the release of the Cruze, Aveo and Spark.
Margaret Brooks, product director for Chevrolet's small and compact cars, said that anything the carmaker has done for small cars in the US just doesn't apply anymore.
To deviate from their economy-car standing, the Cruze compact and Aveo subcompact are expected to be fitted with more standard equipment, including air conditioning and heated outside mirrors.Read the entire article Chevrolet reinventing its small-car strategy with the Cruze, Aveo and Spark
New images showing the hatchback version of General Motors Co.'s 2012 Chevrolet Aveo sedan hit the web. The first set of images had appeared at the start of the year. These images, which are part of the patent filing that Chevrolet submitted to the US patent office, display a model that is clearly inspired from the Aveo RS show car.
The new Aveo features a revised front fascia and a more aggressive stance due to new headlights and a bigger grille.
These two models are alike in their interiors too. There are rumors that the production version has the same multi-function steering wheel, instrument cluster housing, and position of the HVAC vents and controls. To date, there has been no report on what engine will be offered in the new Aveo.Read the entire article Leaked: 2012 Chevrolet Aveo patent drawings

Men aren't particularly clamoring for small cars but if there's one that most appeals to them, it would be the model that's inspired by the Aveo RS Concept, according to General Motors Co. Vice Chairman Bob Lutz.
The model, which is currently showcased at the Detroit Auto Show, is a sportier version of the current Aveo budget car that hints at the next-generation car due in 2011.
Lutz describes the car to be a "pocket rocket" but he said that he wants to juice it up more as he and Vice Chairman Tom Stephens are not satisfied with its 1.4-liter turbo. Lutz added that they're currently working to give it more horsepower.Read the entire article Chevrolet Aveo RS Concept at the Detroit Auto Show
