Styling hints of Corvette to be found in future Chevrolet models

If in the near future you would a hint of the Chevrolet Corvette in a number of the brand’s new cars, don’t be surprised as the General Motors really intend to do so. According to GM global design chief Ed Welburn, the carmaker’s designers working harder to infuse some DNA from the Corvette into the Chevrolet’s next generation of cars that will be launched starting 2015.

He named some of these cars – Malibu, Cruze and Volt – that will feature subtle design elements of the Corvette like its hexagonal taillights and its taut hood. "I always look at the hood of the Corvette and the sectioning, the way it's taut, very lean, very sporty," Welburn remarked to Automotive News last week, adding that such styling will be part of “everything we do for Chevrolet."

Welburn disclosed that one of those elements tha will be hinted in the brand’s other models will be the Corvette's squared-off taillights, which has been a source of controversy among loyalists.

Corvette Stingray not coming to South Korea as its V8 engine is too noisy

Everyone loves sports cars and most of you folks are in love with the proper sound delivered by a powerful V8 engine. Still, it appears that South Korean buyers will not be able to enjoy the sound of the V8 engine found on the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray as the vehicle is currently being delayed by the country’s regulation on automobile noise.

These words came from Chevrolet Korea CEO Sergio Rocha, who also said that only 12 Corvettes are imported to Korea every year, which means that bringing the Corvette Stingray to Korea makes no sense. As a result, the company will not try to spend its resources and convince lawmakers to change the noise law only to sell 12 vehicles per year.

For those who don’t know, the 2014 Corvette Stingray is powered by a 6.2-liter LT1 V8 engine that produces 450 hp and 450 lb-ft (610 Nm) of torque. The engine is bolted to a seven-speed manual transmission as standard, while as an option Chevrolet offers a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

As you may know already, Chevrolet is the official sponsor of Manchester United football team and just like any other company, it offered free cars for the team’s player as they needed to let people see the stars are driving their vehicles. Still, this didn’t go according to the American carmaker’s plan as Manchester United’s stars didn’t want to drive Chevrolet’s vehicles and preferred to drive their own cars.

As a result, 15 vehicles delivered by Chevrolet in April, including Camaros and Stingrays, are sitting unused in a corner of the Carrington car park. This happens after Chevrolet paid a hefty 47 million pounds to have its name on Manchester United’s shirts.

Stars like Robin van Persie drives his Porsche Panamera to the team’s training ground, while Wayne Rooney arrives in his Range Rover customized by Overfinch. Ryan Giggs also drives a Range Rover, while midfielder Marouane Fellaini arrives in a Mercedes-Benz M-Class.

Back in August, GM announced that the 2015 Corvette Stingray will arrive with the new Valet mode with performance Data Recorder, a system that allows you to lock your interior storage, disable the infotainment system but also record video, audio and vehicle data. Customers can activate the Valet Mode by entering a unique four-digit code and was created in order to keep your car safe while driven by foreign persons.

A month later after making the announcement, General Motors sent a bulletin to dealers in order to inform customers not to use the Valet Mode until the software is updated. Apparently, the Valet Mode is not legal in 12 states, including California and Michigan, because the law doesn’t let you record private conversations unless people know about it.

So, the system needs to be consistent with legal requirements that pertain to audio recording devices, according to the bulletin sent by GM. It is still unclear how GM will solve this problem but we are sure that they will quickly find a solution for people who want to get the navigation package that includes the Valet Mode and Performance Data Recorder.

Chevrolet’s 2014 Corvette Stingray has already an amazing design but what GeigerCars did is out of this world. As you can see, the vehicle looks far more aggressive than the standard version thanks to the new front splitter with additional flaps on both sides, a new front grille including grate and a brand new set of side sills.

The rear end shows a brand new bumper with integrated air diffuser as well as a carbon fiber rear spoiler (carbon body kit costs 6,652 euros). The exterior design is rounded off by the Z51 performance package and the special “motorsport gold” paint, which costs a whooping 6,000 euros.

Moreover, GeigerCars installed a KW variant 3 coilover suspension (3,900 euros including assembly), which can be individually adjusted between 10 and 35 mm on the front axle, while the rear axle can be lowered between 15 and 45 mm. For 6,500 euros, the front axle gets 19-inch Geiger forged wheels, while the rear axle receives 20-inch wheels.

Callaway has just announced that it finalized its Corvette powertrain management system calibration. So, if you are not satisfied by the 450 hp and 450 lb-ft (610 Nm) of torque delivered by the 6.2-liter V8 engine you’d be happy to know that Callaway is able to boost the engine to an impressive 627 hp and 610 lb-ft (827 Nm) of torque.

According to the American tuner, these numbers were obtained thanks to a new supercharger system that includes a new intake manifold design, new intercooler design and a 2300cc high helix angle, four-lobe rotor pack.

In addition, the new intercooler system received three discrete liquid-to-air cooling elements that provide unequalled inlet air cooling efficiency.

Besides the 2015 Corvette Z06, Chevrolet also brought at the 2014 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit the all-new C7.R racecar. Co-developed with the all-new 2015 Corvette Z06, the new C7.R will make its debut on the racetrack later this month at the 52nd Rolex 24 At Daytona on January 25-26, a race that kicks off the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.

Moreover, we will see both C7.R race cars in June at the 24 Hours of Le mans. Just like before, the race car and the Z06 will share the same, production-based aluminum frame but for the first time the frames for the vehicles will be built in-house at the Corvette’s Bowling Green assembly plant.

By leveraging advanced manufacturing materials such as laser welding, Flowdrill-machined fasteners and a GM-patented aluminum spot-welding process, the production structure is significantly stronger than its predecessor. Furthermore, the Corvette race car will be more fuel-efficient thanks to the addition of direct fuel injection to the Corvette Z06.

At the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show, Chevrolet announced the Performance Data Recorder (PDR) for the 2015 Corvette Stingray. This fully integrated system enables users to record high-definition videos, as well as telemetry overlays, of their driving experiences.

According to GM, the system was developed with Cosworth, the well-known British motorsports-engineering company, same company that spies the Corvette Racing team’s data acquisition and telemetry electronics system. The new Performance Data Recorder system includes three major components: first is a 720p, high-definition camera which is mounted within the windshield header trim and records the driver’s point-of-view.

A microphone in the cabin records everything it hears. Moreover, we find a self-contained telemetry recorder, which uses a dedicated GPS receiver operating at 5 hertz or cycles per seconds, allowing precise positioning and corner traces. The recorder is hard-wired into the Stingray’s Controller Area Network, or CAN, to access vehicle information. Finally, the system comes with a dedicated SD-card slot in the glove box that records and transfers video and vehicle data. An 8 gb memory card can record up to 200 minutes, while a 32 gb card stores up to 800 minutes, more than 13 hours of driving time.
