2018 Chevy Cruze Diesel is priced from $24,670, sales begin in the fall

Amid reports that major rival Volkswagen would cease producing 2016 and 2017 model year diesel cars following the wake of the "Dieselgate" scandal, it’s believed that Chevrolet sees its opportunity and seeks to take advantage of it.

With Volkswagen allegedly put on the sidelines, Chevrolet aims to be one of the main sources of compact diesels. So it’s with this environment that the 2018 Chevrolet Cruze arrives. And the good news is that it will be equipped with packages that raise its convenience factor as well as its sportier aesthetic and performance.

2018 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel has some new improvements that will come across as great news for loyal followers and car enthusiasts alike. The promising vehicle is considered as one of the most cost-effective non hybrid automobiles found in the US Market to date. The Chevrolet Cruze Diesel manual also boasts of an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rating of an impressive 52 miles per gallon highway, 37 mph and 30 mpg city. Its automatic counterpart fitted a 9 speed auto transmission boasts the same average consumption, but its highway rating is around 47 mpg and city is 31 mpg. Now that's one automobile that we would like to get our hands on.

2017 Chevrolet Cruze achieves 52 mpg on EPA for its diesel manual variant

And so, the highest EPA-estimated fuel returns for the highway goes to Chevrolet! Looking back, Reuss of General Motors has said before that the latest Chevrolet Cruze could get an EPA rating that begins with a 5. Apparently, he’s right after the Cruze manual diesel’s official EPA figures show an average highway consumption of up to 52 mpg. Indeed, it is the highest fuel economy ever achieved on any non-EV and non-hybrid vehicle in the US.

This comes as positive news especially after the dieselgate scandal that has tainted the image of all diesel-powered engines. Everything else is water under the bridge so to speak. Volkswagen has clearly gotten rid of its Jetta Diesel and Golf Diesel models. Having said that, the Cruze is still behind most of the two-gas electric hybrids and plugin- EVs when it comes to the US pollution standards. On highway driving, the Hyundai Ioniq hybrid boasts up to 59 miles per gallon while the Toyota Prius Eco can give as much as 53 mpg.

Since the Chevy Cruze’s diesel manual variant is also mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, the results also show a combined fuel consumption of up to 37mpg. Based on the EPA test, the result shows at least 30mpg for city driving. On the same note, the other model with 9-speed automatic gearbox has virtually the same fuel consumption--- with 31mpg for the city and 47mpg for the high way.

Chevrolet set out to prove effectiveness of new performance parts

Chevrolet is so confident that its new performance parts for the Camaro, Cruze, Colorado and Silverado are up to the task that it allowed a calculated comparison of the upgraded units and their stock counterparts at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch in Pahrump, Nevada.

The performance test at Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch serves as a side event to the official unveiling of these parts at the 2016 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, which is a drivable distance from Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch. As per the test, Chevrolet prepared stock units and performance parts-enhanced versions of the Camaro, Cruze, Colorado and Silverado.

First, engineers from Chevrolet Performance allowed journalists to test drive the stock versions of the Camaro, Cruze, Colorado and Silverado the Spring Mountain road course. Then, engineers had journalists do the same with performance-upgraded versions.

Chevrolet reveals Blue Line Malibu and Cruze concept versions at SEMA

When talking about the Chevrolet, a lot of people are likely to focus on the Corvette, or even the Camaro. Even then, Chevrolet Performance knew that it should also put attention on vehicles that are considered to be more on the mainstream.

Thus the brand has said that at this November’s 2016 SEMA Show to be held in Las Vegas, it will be coming out with a Blue Line concept version for both Malibu and the Cruze hatchback.

It would take an extraordinary director to create a commercial that effectively utilizes the elements of the horror genre to highlight the advanced safety features of the all-new 2016 Chevrolet Malibu and 2016 Chevrolet Cruze.

This creative feat is achieved in a 60-second commercial directed by Sam Raimi, a critically-acclaimed director well-known for his supernatural cult horror series Evil Dead. According to Sam Raimi, the Chevrolet commercial was approached the same way as in movie making – by considering the plot, the characters and outcome.

The only difference is that, instead of the usual ‘anything that can go wrong will go wrong’ plot in most suspense/horror films, the Chevrolet commercial shows that all seemingly-inevitable accidents are all thwarted one by one, thanks to the car's state of the art active safety technologies available in the new models.

General Motors Co. is planning to produce the next-generation Chevrolet Cruze small car at its Coahuila site in Mexico. GM will make a $350-million investment in the project. The carmaker will still produce the Cruze at its Lordstown site in Ohio. So far, GM has identified only three site globally that will manufacture the next-generation Cruze, including in China.

A spokesman for the carmaker in the United States remarked that its Gunsan site in South Korea will continue to produce the current Cruze model to cater to demand in local and export markets. As part of a new wage agreement signed last summer, GM would build the next-generation Cruze in South Korea starting in 2017, according to a proposal seen by Reuters.

Carmakers are flocking to Mexico to take advantage of its low labor costs and access to the US market. For instance, Toyota is finalizing plans for its first passenger car assembly plant in the country while Volkswagen recently disclosed plans to invest $1 billion in its Puebla plant.

General Motors has ordered dealers to stop delivery of MY2013-2014 Chevrolet Cruze sedans due to a possible airbag issue, according to a stop-delivery order obtained by Automotive News. Some the affected Cruzes were fitted with a "suspect" driver's side airbag inflator module that may have been assembled with an incorrect part.

Martin NeSmith, owner of two Chevrolet-Buick-GMC dealerships in south Georgia, told Automotive News that dealers were disappointed on the stop-sale order of their most popular car just when they getting some sales momentum.

The order means dealers have to stop sales of new and used MY2013 and MY2014 Cruzes "until further instructions are received … in the near future." The order also means continued headache for Chevrolet dealers who have been dealing with notices to stop sales of new and used vehicles, including those awaiting repairs.

General Motors has ordered Chevrolet dealers to stop selling some Cruze compact cars due to an undisclosed issue, GM said in an e-mailed memo sent to all Chevy dealers in the US, as obtained by Automotive News. The stop-delivery order applies to some Cruze models (model years 2013 and 2014) powered by a 1.4-liter turbo engine.

GM spokesman Alan Adler confirmed that Chevrolet dealers received a notice pertaining to some Cruze models but couldn’t provide details right away. Dealers received a list of vehicle identification numbers to help them identify the affected vehicles. "Instructions for releasing the involved vehicles from this stop delivery will be provided in the near future," the memo says.

A Chevrolet dealer in the Midwest remarked that around 10 percent of his Cruze inventory is covered by the ordered. GM last month issued a recall of 1.37 million small cars in the US covering 2003-2007 model years, including the Chevrolet Cobalt, for faulty ignition switches linked to 34 crashes and 12 fatalities.

There may soon be a Chevrolet Cruze hatchback variant and a modern-day station wagon, General Motors North America president Mark Reuss told Forbes. Reuss said that to stay competitive, the automaker may also have to add at least three other vehicle types to its portfolio. This modern station wagon would be a mainstream, inexpensive model, instead of an updated Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon or a car that could rival wagons built by Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.

Specifically, it will be a “contemporary” model that could function as an in-between for buyers who are not sure if they want to exchange a sedan for a crossover. For now, GM sells just one traditional wagon model in the U.S., the Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon and CTS-V Sport Wagon.

These two are based on the outgoing version of the CTS. Reuss added that it was a “pre-bankruptcy planning mistake” not to offer a Cruze hatchback in the U.S. Chevrolet sells a five-door and a wagon variant of the Cruze in Europe. However, they’re not available in the U.S. where there’s competition with hatchback versions of the Mazda 3 and Ford Focus. Nevertheless, the Chevrolet Cruze sedan is one of GM’s top-selling vehicles, with 211,862 units sold so far in 2013.

General Motors has postponed the rollout of the next-generation Chevrolet Cruze by a year due to engineering modifications as well as its desire to sell more of the outgoing model, people familiar with the carmaker’s plans told Reuters. GM initially intended to start building the next-generation Cruze in late 2014, but has shifted it to December 2015, according to the sources.

Canadian Auto Workers union leaders at a Cooper Standard Automotive site in Stratford, Ontario, have already disclosed the delay to members. CAW Local 4451 Chairwoman Karen Fleming said in a newsletter issued in April that it was disappointing to learn the Chevy Cruze program “has been pushed back a year and will not start until 2015." GM has said that the next-generation Cruze will be completely redesigned inside and out.

GM said the vehicle will have a larger trunk and roomier passenger compartment as well as better fuel economy. GM posted a 17-percent increase in Cruze sales in the US in the first six months of the year to almost 134,000. The model was also the second-best selling passenger car in the US next to Toyota Camry.

General Motors Co. will commence building the Chevrolet Cruze at its Opel’s Gliwice site in Poland at the end of 2014, German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported, citing an internal production plan as the source of the information. A spokesman for Chevrolet Europe, however, denied the report, saying that there is yet no decision as to where the next-generation Cruze will be produced.

GM has disclosed that it would shift output of the next-generation Cruze out of South Korea, where the current model is being produced. Reuters reported in January 2012 that GM’s management and workforce were discussing wether to transfer production of the Cruze from South Korea to Poland to lower losses at Opel. South Korean unions welcomed the news negatively and threatened to "wage a war."

The Gliwice site could be a good site to produce Chevrolet’s products since it is the only low-cost Opel plant in Europe. It also produces the Cruze sibling, the Opel Astra. Both models could be produced on one assembly line that would require only a little additional investment. The Cruze is Chevrolet's best-selling model in Europe, with sales up 5 percent to 12,441 units in the first four months of 2012, according to data from JATO Dynamics.

2014 Chevrolet Cruze Turbo Diesel will achieve fuel economy figures of around 46mpg on the highway, 4 mpg better than General Motors’ initial target, the carmaker estimates. The mpg estimate for 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Turbo Diesel will allow it to surpass the figures for its 2013 Volkswagen Jetta diesel rival, which achieves 42 mpg on the highway.

The 2-liter turbo diesel engine of the Cruze Turbo Diesel also provides more power than the Jetta diesel, at figures of 148 hp compared to 140 hp. Following the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Turbo Diesel’s debut at the Chicago auto show, GM engineers continued to adjust the vehicle to further improve its fuel economy.

According to GM, the Cruze diesel emits 90 percent less nitrogen oxide and particulate emissions than the earlier diesel models. A GM spokeswoman said they wanted to be clear that the Cruze diesel would be at the same level or better than the Jetta diesel. GM’s engineering team implemented a series of incremental changes to the Cruze diesel from the Eco model to gain efficiency.

Chevrolet Aveo and Cruze models fitted with the Chevrolet MyLink technology will be available with Siri starting March 2013. The all-new Trax small sports utility vehicle will also be offered with MyLink connected radio and Siri when it is rolled out this spring. Susan Docherty, president and managing director, Chevrolet and Cadillac Europe, expressed excitement in the fact that Chevrolet will be one of the first auto brands to offer Siri Eyes Free integration in Europe.

She said that “safe, easy, reliable and portable” connectivity is a top priority for their customers, noting that Siri complements MyLink's existing capabilities to help deliver an “incredible driving experience."

Through Chevrolet MyLink technology, drivers with a compatible iPhone running iOS 6 can direct Siri to perform a number of tasks, allowing them to safely focus on the road and on the wheel. To further minimize driving distractions, Siri comes with the Eyes Free mode that allows drivers to interact with their iPhones while preventing the screen of the device from lighting up.
