2018 Chevrolet Equinox Diesel gets a 39 mpg highway rating

In the United States, not many automakers offer crossovers with a diesel engine option, but Chevrolet does, with their 2018 Equinox. Those who opt for this engine will get some a boost in fuel economy as the car had been recently rated to have a highway fuel economy of 39 miles per gallon. Whereas the 1.5 liter turbo four-cylinder gasoline engine was rated with 32 miles per gallon while the 2.0 liter has 29 mpg. When the diesel tank is filled to its maximum, it can reach 577 miles (929 kilometers).

Though the company has not said anything else regarding the Equinox Diesel’s fuel economy figures, we noticed on the company’s presentation that it has a 32 mpg combined mileage. If the company confirms EPA’s numbers, then the said model will be the most fuel-efficient crossover in the country, a great feat considering that it does not have some kind of electrification.

Other than being fuel efficient, we can also say that the Equinox is extra silent compared to its counterparts. Apparently, its 1.6 liter Ecotec diesel powerplant is 65 percent more silent than the Jaguar F-Pace’s 2.0 liter diesel, at 4000 rpm, and is 55 percent less noisy when the car is idle.

Refreshed 2018 Ford Mustang offers better fuel economy

According to Ford, the 2018 Mustang not only gets a more potent powerplant but also delivers a more efficient drivetrain too. Having said that, the refreshed model is 5.6 percent more efficient than the older version when it comes to fuel economy. Another new feature is that the pony has improved handling, thanks to the aerodynamic tweaks.

For the sake of comparison, the 2017 Ford Mustang EcoBoost (in automatic and manual) was rated 21 mpg city, 30 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined, whereas the 2018 models were rated 21 mpg city, 32 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined. On the other hand, the 2017 Ford Mustang GT in automatic and manual have ratings of 15 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined. Though the 2018 GT in manual have the same ratings, the automatic version has improved ratings at 16 mpg city, 25 mpg highway and 19 mpg combined.

Mike Del Zio, dynamics engineer of Ford, together with Jonathan Gesek, aerodynamics engineer, discovered a way to make the 2018 Mustang easier to handle. Del Zio found that high-speed cornering was not as good as the wind tunnel number indicated, which he noticed during on-track development. What he did to solve this problem was to apply a strip of duct tape over the lower gap of the grille.

Be ready to pay a bit more for the diesel-powered 2018 Chevrolet Equinox

When Chevrolet came out with the 2018 Equinox last September, the facelifted model was offered in a diesel option for the first time, plus it weighed much less at 400 pounds (181 kilograms). Now, we have an idea how much the diesel variant will cost us.

First off, the base trim with the 1.5 liter turbocharged engine starts at $27,695, while the gas-powered Equinox LT costs $30,090. Now, the diesel equivalent of the LT is asking for $31,435 including destination according to CarsDirect. That makes it more expensive than the two other gas models. Specifically, there’s a gap of $1,345 compared to its counterpart 2.0-liter LT gas engine and a $3,740 difference with the 1.5-liter turbo engine.

With the extra few thousands added in, you will also get 17-inch aluminum wheels, cloth seats, and a 7-inch infotainment system that’s compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. If you want a slightly wider infotainment system, with multiple USB ports and a power sunroof, you can add the Sun and Infotainment Package for an extra $2,395.

2018 Chevrolet Equinox: Initial pricing released for US and Canada

Chevrolet has already given out the pricing for some of its 2018 Equinox models. Not only will the new Equinox be available in both the US and Canada, it is also expected to roll out in 115 other countries worldwide at the end of next year. What we have right now are the initial prices for its Canada and US consumers.

The 1.5 litre turbo is priced for as low as $26, 995 CAD or $24,475 USD. Prices for all variants are not given out entirely, but the entry-level will be fitted with a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine. This engine is capable of producing as much as 170hp and 201 lb-ft of torque with estimated fuel returns of 31mph.

Other engines will be offered in a much powerful 252hp 2.0 litre turbo engine that delivers up to 260lb-ft of torque. This probably will come with GM’s latest 9-speed automatic transmission.

Chevrolet Equinox is a mid-sized crossover SUV created by Chevrolet for General Motors. First introduced in 2004, this GM Theta unibody platform crossover SUV came into production the following year and has since then become the Chevrolet’s most popular crossover SUV. This year, the American automaker unveiled its third generation model set to dominate the streets and battle crossover rivals in the likes of the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V, to name a few.

The new Equinox has a brand new platform similar to the new Buick Envision. It has also become lighter and shorter by shedding 400 pounds and 4.7 inches, respectively. Due to higher sales of trucks and SUVs in the U.S. in April, the University of Michigan researchers observed a 0.2 mpg decline in the average fuel economy of light vehicles sold in the U.S. From 25.4 in March, the figure in April fell to 25.2 mpg. Researchers Michael Sivak and Brandon Schoettle based the report on the average window-sticker value of new cars, SUVs, vans and pickups sold in the U.S.

According to a statement from the researchers, this decrease indicates the bigger proportion of pickup trucks and SUVs in total sales. April 2015 is the 15th straight month that there has been at least 25 mpg calculated for the average fuel economy in the U.S. The report pointed out that from the first full month that the average fuel economy was monitored in October 2007, the figure had gone up 5.1 mpg.

However, the average fuel economy of 25.3 mpg in the October 2014 - April 2015 period (which makes up the first seven months of the model year) has not changed compared to the same period the previous year. When interviewed last month, Schoettle said that fuel economy is expected to increase as the model year concludes.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency has issued updated procedures for determining fuel economy of vehicles – a challenging part for some carmakers in the last two years. EPA’s update covers how carmakers should calculate road load values in coast down tests, which gauges the rolling resistance and aerodynamic drag of a vehicle as it goes from 70 mph to a stop on a straight, flat track.

These values are usually used to program dynamometers that carmakers could use to calculate fuel economy ratings using the EPA’s test cycle. The update clarifies how carmakers should get vehicles ready for coast down testing and revises the test to monitor road load levels over a broader range of speed during the test.

According to Chris Grundler, director of the EPA’s Office of Transportation Air Quality, the updates will help ensure the fuel economy labels are accurate, and will help clarify how the agency expects the tests to be done.

The 2016 Hyundai Sonata Plug-In Hybrid wasn’t the only vehicle unveiled at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show as the South Korean manufacturer also brought the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. This model uses a downsized 2.0-liter Nu GDI four-cylinder engine that delivers 154 hp and 140 lb-ft of torque, bolted to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Moreover, the vehicle carries an electric motor that produces 38 kW (51 hp) and 151 lb-ft of torque, as well as a lithium-polymer battery pack with a capacity of 1.62 kWh, which is located under the trunk floor.

The total output delivered by the hybrid system is 193 hp at 6,000 rpm. Hyundai expects the vehicle to return a fuel economy of 44 mpg on the highway, 39 mpg in the city and 42 mpg combined.

The average fuel economy of light vehicles -- new cars, SUVs, vans and pickups -- sold in the United States in November was 25.3 mpg, according to a research by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMRTI). This means that the figure remained unchanged from October and likely will still be unchanged in the near term.

In an e-mailed announcement, UMTRI researchers Michael Sivak and Brandon Schoettle said that unchanged average fuel economy could be a net result of two opposing trends -- less demand for fuel efficient vehicles due to dropping gasoline price; and improved fuel economy figures of MY2015 vehicles compared to MY2014 ones.

Fuel economy had its largest drop in three years in September after hitting a new record in August. On the other hand, AAA data shows that retail gasoline averaged $2.746 a gallon in the US on Wednesday.

Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors target to hike the average fuel economy of their vehicles by 25 percent by the end of the decade comply with stricter emissions regulations in South Korea, the United States and Europe. In a statement, the South Korean carmakers disclosed future development of next-generation engines and transmissions, as well as plans to cut weight of key models and expand their lineup of green vehicles to achieve the target.

Hyundai said in a statement that group chairman Chung Mong-koo has ordered to secure “world-leading competitiveness in fuel economy” by the end of the decade. The carmaker disclosed they will replace 70 percent of their 10 gasoline and diesel engines with next-generation powerplants and will also expand the use of turbo-charged gasoline engines.

The carmakers will also develop more advanced transmissions. They also plan to expand use of advanced, high-strength steel to make their offerings much lighter. Hyundai and Kia are planning to roll out a compact, hybrid-dedicated vehicle as well as a plug-in hybrid version of the Sonata sedan in 2015.

Earlier this month, Mercedes-Benz announced that it will reduce fuel economy ratings of some MY2013-2014 C-Class sedans after EPA found errors in mpg test procedures. Today, EPA announced that another German carmaker will follow the same path.

We are talking about BMW AG, which will reduce fuel economy labels on four 2014 Cooper models after the United States Environmental Protection Agency tested the vehicles and observed that they actually are not as fuel-efficient as the Bavarian carmaker said.

EPA tested the vehicles at the National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory in Ann Arbor, Michigan and ordered BMW to relabel four of its 2014 MINI Cooper models. Affected models are the MINI Cooper hardtop equipped with manual and automatic transmission and the MINI Cooper S hardtop with manual and automatic transmission.

China vowed to penalized carmakers who failed to meet fuel consumption requirements on passenger vehicles set for next year by setting a limit on their production and naming them on public. China also said it would ban the production of new models that failed to meet the target and will reject expansion plans by carmakers who weren’t able to abide by the measures.

The carmakers will also be made to submit improvement plans. The measures are expected to prompt both foreign and local carmakers to pursue and adopt emission-cutting technologies like gasoline-electric hybrids and all-electric cars.

China's fuel economy rules call for a fleet-wide corporate average target of 34 mpg (6.9 liters per 100 kilometer) next year and 47 mpg (5.0 liters per 100 kilometer) in 2020. The measures take effect on Nov. 1. The fuel economy number will be determined by a special weight-based formula.

When Nissan Motor Corp. unveiled the first Murano crossover around 12 years ago, heads turned and eyes were fixed on its curves and body. It hopes to replicate the same feat with the redesigned 2015 Murano, which boasts of curvier and more sensual body lines. Not only that, the crossover now boasts of an interior that is more elegant and more spacious seating, featuring fewer control buttons, heated ergonomic rear seats and a panoramic moonroof.

With the new Murano, Nissan hopes to appeal to upscale empty nesters and near-luxury buyers. Scott Pak, senior product manager for the 2015 Murano, remarked that the crossover is not for 34-year-olds, but for those aged 45 and above.

He said that these people wanted a “nice car” as a reward from years of raising kids, unlike those 34-year-olds. Despite the impending arrival of the new crossover late this year, the current model still managed to post a 12-percent jump in January-September sales to 34,823 units. While Nissan has yet to reveal the pricing for the third-generation Murano, the current version carries a starting tag of $29,390, including shipping.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles ranked last among 11 carmakers in the government's annual report on fuel economy gains. FCA lurked on the bottom of the recently published annual Fuel Economy Trends report of the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

The carmaker has pledged to meet stiff corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) target in the next few years, although its trucks-to-cars sales mix is around 3-to-1 and has products that have very low mpg figures. According to EPA, the average fuel economy of FCA cars and light trucks was 20.9 mpg in the 2013 model year, an improvement of 0.8 mpg from 2012.

That figure, however, is well below the average fuel economy of the US auto industry at 24.1 mpg. Preliminary data for the MY2014 vehicles indicated slight improvement for both FCA the industry and FCA. Ironically, FCA offers the most fuel-efficient pickup, the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel. But FCA has plans to get out of the bottom and achieve its CAFE target.

Chevrolet’s new 2015 Colorado made quite a buzz and dealers already ordered more than 40,000 units but today we expect this number to increase as the new pickup truck shows promises to return class-leading fuel economy figures.

According to GM, the 2.5-liter four-cylinder which delivers 200 hp and 191 pound-feet of torque, equipped with rear-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission will offer an EPA rating of 19 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the highway and 22 mpg combined.

When using the six-speed automatic transmission as well as the two-wheel drive configuration, the numbers increase to 20 mpg city, 27 mph highway and 22 mpg combined.

Altroconsumo has filed a class action suit against Fiat and Volkswagen alleging that the carmakers inflated the fuel-saving credentials of their offerings. The consumer group is urging car buyers to join the suit, which was filed on claims that following tests on the Fiat Panda 1.2 and the Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI, Apparently the vehicles’ efficiency figures were between 18 and 50 percent less than the carmakers stated numbers.

Altroconsumo wants Fiat and Volkswagen to compensate Panda and Golf owners EUR247 and EUR509 respectively. The group based their estimates on the additional fuel costs for an average annual distance driven of 15,000 km (9,320 miles).

Monique Goyens, director general of the European Consumer Organization, remarked consumers buying supposedly efficient cars are “misled too often.” Goyens noted that the practice of overstating fuel-saving credentials could make drivers disregard fuel consumption information altogether. The 2015 Dodge Challegner SRT Hellcat is not only the most powerful coupe found in the company’s lineup but also impressed us with its EPA fuel-economy rating of 22 mpg on the highway when equipped with the TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission.

According to Dodge, the Challenger SRT Hellcat not only more powerful but also more efficient than supercars such as the Lamborghini Aventador Roadster ($425,845) which returns 18 mpg on the highway, the Aston Martin Vanquish ($287,820) with its 18 mpg on the highway and the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT ($221,580) which returns 19 mpg on the highway.

When using the six-speed manual transmission, the Challenger SRT Hellcat returns 21 mpg on the highway. For those who don’t know, the 6.2-liter HEMI Hellcat found on the Challenger SRT was rated at impressive 707 hp and 650 lb-ft (881 Nm) of torque.
