Quality problems delay shipment of bi-fuel 2015 Chevrolet Impala

Because of a quality problem, customers have been waiting for nearly a year for the “bi-fuel” Chevrolet Impala that runs on both gasoline and compressed natural gas. It was in October 2013 that GM announced the impending arrival of the 2015 “bi-fuel” Impala. The automaker referred to it as the only production full-size sedan in the industry that runs on both types of fuel.

Dan Akerson, the CEO at the time, had made the announcement during a national energy summit. He said that this Impala would start selling in the summer of 2014. To date, not one customer has gotten one. In a May 29 memo, GM informed 3,200 dealers that its delivery will be delayed further because of a “second quality hold” as the automaker assesses the car’s CNG system, which incorporates a 7.8-gallon, all-steel tank in the trunk.

According to this memo, the tentative shipping date is “mid-July” and that some of the orders made in April and May won’t get produced. When asked by Automotive News, one person who ordered a bi-fuel Impala said that it has been over a year ago that he had made a down payment. He wasn’t told of the reason for the delay.

Chevrolet Impala Midnight Edition will arrive in 2015 inspired by the Blackout Concept

Back in October, Chevrolet introduced at the 2014 SEMA Show the Impala Blackout Concept, a sedan with a sinister attitude resulted from the new paint and accessories. In a recent interview with Steve Majoros, Chevrolet’s marketing director for cars and crossovers, we found out that the company will offer a production version of that concept.

Dubbed Impala Midnight Edition, the vehicle could arrive next spring and the reason that Chevrolet decided to build this car is because blacked-out is a huge trend and the Impala looks gorgeous this way.

Just like the Impala Blackout Concept, we expect the 2015 Chevrolet Impala Midnight Edition to arrive with Chevrolet Accessories black grille surround, a new rear spoiler, painted mirror caps and a new set of 19-inch wheels with black accents. Inside, we will see custom trim plates with a wire mesh pattern, stainless steel sills and a new sport pedal kit.

Chevrolet Impala still king of rentals, NY Times says

Update: After NY Times was contacted by Chevrolet the article was updated and due to the fact that the car manufacturer was so kind to give us all the details, we updated our report as well. According to Chevrolet, sales of the redesigned Impala are actually performing well in the marketplace and only around 20 percent of the sales are going to fleet.

The old Chevrolet Impala is sold as the Impala Limited and it is only available to fleet buyers such as rental car companies. 80 percent of the Impala Limited sales are actually going to rental car companies

It seems like the Chevrolet Impala sedan remains the king of rentals, so argues an article in The New York Times last week. According to Columnist Josh Barro, the Impala continues to be the rental-lot king, with around 57 percent of 2014 Impalas transformed into rental cars.

Stop-start is now offered as standard on 2015 Chevrolet Impala with 2.5-liter engine

Stop-start technology will be offered as standard on the 2015 Chevrolet Impala’s base 2.5-liter engine, General Motors has disclosed. The technology improves the new Impala’s fuel economy by 5 percent. According to GM spokesman Chad Lyons, the implementation of stop-start technology in the Impala is part of the carmaker’s bid to widen the use of the system in its vehicles.

He said that the stop-start technology will become “more prevalent” in GM vehicles. The stop-start technology improves fuel economy by turning off the engine in certain conditions like stop-and-go traffic.

The revamped Impala has become a flagship vehicle for Chevrolet and is the second GM vehicle to offer the stop-start technology as standard. The 2014 Chevrolet Malibu was the first GM unit to offer the system as standard, improving its fuel economy by around 14 percent.

GM announced that the 2015 Chevrolet Impala Bi-Fuel will have a starting price of $38,210, including an $825 destination charge, but excluding tax, title, license, dealer fees as well as operational equipment. Set to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2014 to both fleet and retail customers, the 2015 Chevrolet Impala Bi-Fuel is able to run on both compressed natural gas (CNG) and gasoline.

The Impala Bi-Fuel is powered by a 3.6-liter V6 engine that generates 303 hp and 358 Nm (164 lb-ft) of torque when running on gasoline. When running on CNG only 85 percent of the power produced with gasoline is available.

According to the official press release, the engine comes with hardened valves and valve seats for improved resistance and durability with the CNG fuel system. The CNG tank is located in the trunk and has a capacity of 7.8 gallons of gasoline, meaning that it provides a range of 150 city miles.

The fleet-only version of the current Chevrolet Impala – the Impala Limited – was meant to be sold only until 2014, when the Oshawa, Ontario production line that builds the sedan will close. But not anymore. General Motors has decided to let the sales of the Impala Limited continue until 2016.

GM launched the redesigned 2014 Impala in April 2013, and executives said that the outgoing model would continue as the Impala Limited for sale to rental operators and corporate and government buyers.

With GM planning to keep the Oshawa line alive until 2016, the Impala Limited would live for another two years. GM spokesman Chad Lyons said last week that the Impala Limited “has done extremely well,” adding that fleet customers “know the car and like it.”

General Motors will be selling a version of the Chevrolet Impala sedan that could switch between gasoline and natural gas, chief executive Dan Akerson has announced. The move is part of GM's plan to take advantage of a drilling boom in the United States that has made natural gas a more viable fuel for cars. The dual-fuel Impala will have one engine and two fuel tanks: one for gasoline and the other for compressed natural gas.

Drivers could almost instantly switch between the two fuels, depending on what they perceive as cheap and available. Akerson remarked that there will be nothing like the duel-fuel Impala on the road. A number of carmakers sell CNG-fueled pickups.  With the launch of the CNG-powered Impala sedan, GM is giving us a preview of what it is seeing as the future of natural gas in the passenger-car market. According to Akerson, CNG Impala will have a combined range of up to 500 miles. It boasts of a gasoline tank that could go up to 350 miles and a CNG tank that could go for 150 miles.

The CNG Impala sedan could be available next summer as a 2015 model. According to GM, CNG Impala will be sold to both fleet and retail buyers. The CNG Impala is expected to appeal to most corporate and government fleet customers -- which prefer fuel efficient vehicles and generally have easier access to natural-gas fueling stations, according to Alan Baum, an industry consultant.

The 2015 Chevrolet Impala Bi-Fuel sedan was announced by General Motors for those who want a cheaper way to drive. As you may know already, compressed natural gas is less expensive than gasoline and also reduces carbon dioxide emissions compared to traditional liquid fuels. Featuring a separate CNG fuel tank mounted in the trunk, the driver can switch between fuels at the push of a button.

Still, when the CNG tank is depleted, the system automatically switches to gasoline. The Impala Bi-fuel is powered by a 3.6-liter V6 engine rated at 303 hp and 358 Nm (164 lb-ft) of torque when using gasoline, but when using CNG the engine delivers only 85 percent of the power produced with gasoline. Using the CNG, the Impala Bi-fuel has a total range of up to 500 miles.

Despite the fact that a fuel tank is in the trunk, the bi-fuel model offers 10 cubic feet of cargo room. Standard features include ten airbags, air conditioning, Bluetooth for phone, audio system with color infotainment, four-wheel disc brakes, antilock brakes, StabiliTrak electronic stability control system and fuel-saving electric power steering.

The redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Impala has transformed from a staple of airport car-rental lots into the best sedan in the United States, according to Consumer Reports. This comes as the auto magazine gave the 2014 Chevrolet Impala a road test score of 95 out of 100. This means that the 2014 Impala has tied the Infiniti G37 for third-highest rating of any current vehicle.

On the other hand, Consumer Reports gave the 2013 Impala a road test score of 63. This will be the first time since 1992 that a domestic car is the top-scoring sedan. Jake Fisher, director of Consumer Reports' automotive testing, told Automotive News, remarked that domestic carmakers “do a lot right” but there is “often something that's holding them back.

Fisher said that 2014 Impala “gets it all right, adding that the sedan is really a winner. In its September issue that will go on sale on Aug. 1, 2013, Consumer Reports remarks that the 2014 Impala "rides like a luxury sedan, with a cushy and controlled demeanor."

General Motors hopes that the launch this month of the redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Impala will increase sales of this nameplate and help invigorate the overall large-sedan segment. Chevrolet's vice president of U.S. sales and service Don Johnson thinks that the styling and generous features of the Impala will attract consumers away from the very popular crossovers and premium cars.

At a recent press event, Johnson expressed optimism about being able to steal sales away from its rivals in the large segment as well as those who are considering crossovers, SUVs and mid-sized sedans.

He didn’t give a prediction of the sales of the Impala or the large-sedan segment. Last year, the U.S. large-sedan segment increased by 1% to 560,611 units. The Impala was the best-selling model at 169,351 units, representing a 1% decrease from the previous year.

Chevrolet’s Oshawa Assembly line has started to roll out the all-new 2014 Impala, the automaker’s flagship sedan. Later this month, the Impala will start to arrive in showrooms. Kevin Williams, president and managing director of GM Canada, said that the all-new Impala shows off Chevrolet’s new direction.

He also said that its Oshawa workers have implemented a perfect plan in bringing to life this nameplate. He added that the recently redesigned Impala will surpass customers’ expectations due to the hard work of its employees. Production of the 2014 Impala will start this May at General Motors’ Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant.

There are several new features in the 2014 Impala, including the Adaptive Cruise Control and crash-avoidance technologies such as Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Side Blind Zone Alert. It is equipped with 10 standard airbags, making it one of the vehicles that have the most number in the segment. The 2014 Impala is where the automaker is set to debut its MyLink radio.

The first Chevrolet model to use the second-generation version of the MyLink infotainment system, including the new software and user interface, is the redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Impala sedan. It will go on sale in the spring of 2013. There will be four preloaded themes to choose from.

Users can change the appearance of the system in the center stack and a display in the gauge cluster. Chevrolet revealed that to develop these themes, it examined smartphones, tablets and sports graphics. Natural language voice commands are accepted by the new MyLink. Smartphones are used to get a link to the internet.

It has a memory that could store as many as 60 entries for your contacts and list of radio stations and navigation destinations. The system could connect up to 10 devices via Bluetooth or a USB port. Users can use tablet-style drag and swipe gestures to page on the 2013 Cadillac XTS sedan.

General Motors anticipates such a high demand for the 2014 Chevrolet Impala that it will add a third shift at its Oshawa, Ontario production facility. GM is confident that the Impala will be competitive against the Ford Mustang Boss 302 or Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. Aside from the third shift on the Flexible manufacturing line, it will extend a previously-scheduled shift addition on the Consolidated line until June 2014.

A third shift will be added at the St. Catherines Powertrain facility to support production of six-speed automatic transmissions for the 2014 Impala, the only transmission option for Chevrolet’s full-size sedan. The lone engine carried over on the 2014 Impala is GM’s widely-used 3.6-liter direct-injected V-6. The 2014 Impala is also available with a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and the 2.4-liter with eAssist.

GM has discontinued the formerly-available 303-hp 5.3-liter LS4 V-8 used in the SS model. Plans for a SS trim level on the 2014 Impala have not been confirmed yet.

The redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Impala won’t have front bench seats, according to General Motors. In fact, the 2013 Chevrolet Impala is the last passenger car in North America to offer them. The front bench seat was first seen in 1911 on Chevrolet's first vehicle, the Series C Classic Six. This option will still be offered on pickup trucks and SUVs.

GM doesn’t expect customers to take much notice that the front bench option is no longer available since front bucket seats have become standard. Last year, just one in 10 Impala customers asked for the $195 bench option in the LS and LT models.

In the statement, Clay Dean, GM director of design, said that bucket seats are preferred by many people due to their sportiness even when they’re not driving sports cars.

General Motors revealed the long-delayed revamp of the Chevrolet Impala at the New York Auto Show. The 2014 Impala is aimed at bringing the vehicle more upscale, boosting retail demand while regaining fleet sales. The 10th variant of the nameplate was launched in 1958; the next-generation model marks the vehicle's first refurbishment in eight years.

It also marks the car's first platform change since the late 1990s. The Impala has been a few years past due for a redesign because of the deep cost-cutting measures during the bankruptcy and restructuring of GM. But the model has fought on. In fact, its U.S. sales of 171,434 last year far surpassed those of its large sedan rivals. However, they were lubricated by fleet sales, which comprised around three-quarters of its volume.

Analyst Aaron Bragman at IHS Automotive commented that GM is marking its position in the large vehicle segment with a "significantly better product," which is not a fleet special but a "higher-priced car, a higher-positioned car, a higher-margin car." Vehicle manufacturers rarely reveal an automobile a year prior to its launch for sale because it could adversely affect the present model. However, the risk is lesser if most of the vehicle's purchasers are fleet operators.

General Motors revealed the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Impala at the 2012 New York Auto Show and we have to admit that the car looks really impressive. Showing a new exterior design, the 2014 Impala represents the next evolution of Chevrolet’s design philosophy.

The first look at the 2014 Impala reveals new, low-profile projector-beam headlamps (or HID headlamps and LED daytime running lamps on LTZ), a new front grille and a completely new front bumper. The rear end of the car looks also pretty good, showing new taillamps, while the design is successfully completed by the range of 18-, 19- and 20-inch wheels. The interior was built with greater attention to detail and upscale features.

The new instrument panel integrates an instrument cluster with a standard 4.2-inch color display with reconfigurable features for the driver information center.

GM announced today that the 2014 Chevrolet Impala and 2013 Traverse will make their debut next month at the 2012 New York Auto Show. For those who don’t know, this will be the 10th generation of the Impala so expect a car that will offer quality as well as fuel-efficient powertrains. The Impala nameplate made its first debut back in 1958 and has been one of Chevrolet’s best-selling passenger cars for decades.

Moreover, with the new Impala, Chevrolet has revamped nearly every passenger car in the lineup in the past 24 months. Regarding the 2013 Chevrolet Traaverse, this model will receive a new design in order o give families a new gathering space with elements of style and refinement inside and out.

Considered one of the safest vehicles on the road today, the new 2013 Traverse will receive industry’s first front center air bag, which means that it is planning to keep its title. According to GM, the air bag deploys in milliseconds and inflates between the driver and front passenger, providing added protection for both front occupants.

General Motors will field a new racing model in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, replacing the current Impala entry.  GM will also produce a consumer version of the new model, which will closely resemble the NASCAR variant. Both cars will carry the Chevrolet badge when they make their debut in 2013. GM will unveil the cars later this year.

The company said it is taking advantage of new NASCAR rules that allow automakers to feature more of their brands' identities in their race cars. With regards to the new model, Jim Campbell, vice president of performance vehicles and motorsports for Chevrolet, said that for now, they are keeping the wraps on it, adding that they will continue to prepare for next season by testing camouflaged vehicles.

Campbell appealed to Chevrolet fans who are excited to take a peek of the new model saying that the prospect of being able “to own one just like it” will make the wait a little more bearable. Chevrolet currently fields the Impala in NASCAR's top stock car racing circuit.
