Clues have been appearing on what Chevrolet will dub its unnamed new model. Bloggers and enthusiasts have been gathering and piecing together clues that lead to a conclusion: the new model will be dubbed as Chevrolet SS. The ironic thing about it is that the source was Chevrolet’s own parent, General Motors.
OnStar’s online site listed GM models compatible with a mobile app that allows remote vehicle access through smartphones. Interestingly, the site contained a list of Chevrolet cars for the 2014 model year, and there sprouted the name “SS Performance.”
The discovery was purely an accidental one. Tech blogger Christopher Price said that he discovered GM’s blunder while searching for the OnStar vehicle profile for his 2009 Pontiac G6. The list has since disappeared from OnStar’s site after someone informed them of the slip-up.Read the entire article OnStar unintentionally releases new Chevy model name: SS Performance
General Motors has teamed up with OnStar and IBM to create another technological innovation in the automotive world. The OnStar Go, General Motor’s new cognitive mobility platform, aims to help its customers “connect and interact” and purchase items even when on the go.
OnStar Go will make use of the IBM Watson, IBM’s artificial intelligence software and tech platform that reveals various requested data with the use of natural language processing and machine learning. It will then go through the data to identify patterns in the driver’s preferences including their decisions and habits; this information will then be sent to brand and marketing professionals who work with IBM and OnStar for them to provide individualized location-based interactions with their target audience and customers. In short, OnStar Go will provide in-car advertising in each GM model.
This new technology will be making its way in future GM models, and will be the equivalent of a Google Assistant or Siri. It will serve the same purpose as these smartphone assistants, suggesting nearby restaurant offers and even locate the nearest gas station.Read the entire article GM teams with IBM to create new OnStar Go cognitive mobility platform in 2017
General Motors plans to launch a new vehicle-prognosis service this year that provides OnStar subscribers feedback on their driving habits. GM also plans to launch another service in which some Chevrolet customers will be notified of potential trouble with their battery, fuel pump or other components.
The data collected by sensors in the vehicle will be streamed via OnStar's 4G LTE high-speed connection. According to GM, both services will be included for free for regular OnStar subscribers who opt in.
Alicia Boler-Davis, GM's senior vice president for global connected customer experience, said in a statement that only the carmaker offers the vehicle-prognostics service, which marks a new chapter in its pursuit to provide convenience and the best overall service in the auto industry.Read the entire article GM to launch new vehicle-prognosis service via OnStar connection
Chevrolet announced that at the 2014 SEMA Show it will bring the SS Sport Concept, an upgraded version of the well-known high-performance sedan that reflects its capabilities. Some of the unique features of this model include the Red Hot exterior with body-colored door handles and mirrors, new grills, fog lamp bezels, side fender vents and a rear spoiler from Chevrolet Accessories.
Moreover, there are new 20-inch wheels and stripes for the hood as well as deck lid from Chevrolet Accessories, as well as wheel caps featuring the Holden logo. Inside, we find a sport pedal kit and cargo net, floor mats and cargo tray with the Holden logo from Chevrolet Accessories.
Under the hood, there is the standard LS3 V8 engine that produces 415 hp (310 kW) and 563 Nm (415 lb-ft) of torque. The engine is bolted to a six-speed manual transmission, while as an option the manufacturer offers a six-speed, paddle-shift automatic gearbox.Read the entire article Chevrolet SS Sport Concept revealed ahead of 2014 SEMA Show
The 2015 Cadillac CTS didn’t make its official debut yet, but General Motors already featured the vehicle in its latest OnStar commercial. The first thing we saw was the redesigned front grille and the new Cadillac crest that was first featured on the 2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe. In the commercial, the 2015 Cadillac CTS highlights the OnStar with 4G LTE, which turns it into a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Featuring the new dark Adriatic Blue and Cristal White (replacing the White Diamond) exterior paint options, the 2015 Cadillac CTS promises to bring SMS text messaging, Lane Change Alert and Lane Keep Assist.
Under the hood, we expect to see the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 272 hp (203 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque, bolted to the paddle-shift eight-speed transmission.Read the entire article 2015 Cadillac CTS shown in an OnStar commercial
The last weekend was a bad one for General Motors and Chevrolet as during the NASCAR race in Daytona Beach, Florida, the Chevrolet SS pace car caught fire. The vehicle was filled with smoke and the diver Brett Bodine was forced to stop the pace car. The good news is that nobody was hurt and the Chevrolet SS was replaced by another car.
Looking at the video, you will see a small flame at the rear of the car, meaning that it might be something related to the electric part. For those who don’t know, the Chevrolet SS is powered by a 6.2-liter LS3 V8 engine that generates 415 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque. The engine delivers the power to the rear wheels and can push the SS from naught to 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 5.0 seconds.
The Chevrolet SS uses a sport tuned chassis and comes as standard with Brembo brakes that feature ventilated, 355-mm rotors and two-piece, four-piston front calipers, hidden behind the 19-inch front wheels (20-inch on the rear) wrapped in high-performance Bridgestone tires.Read the entire article Video: 2014 Chevrolet SS Pace Car catches fire during the NASCAR race in Daytona Beach
General Motors will remold its OnStar service as a provider of high-speed connectivity to vehicles, loaded with a portfolio of infotainment features. The revised service will commence this summer on some vehicles as a package of infotainment apps, with current safety and security features still available. OnStar will also offer a Wi-Fi hot spot, streaming radio, vehicle diagnostics, weather reports and other apps through a high-speed 4G LTE data connection as provided by AT&T.
"It will be introduced on everything from entry-level hatches to Silverados," said Tim Nixon, OnStar's chief technology officer, during a Dec. 11, 2013 presentation for journalists. Nixon said that the connected features will be fitted first on the Chevrolet Corvette, Impala, Malibu and Volt, which will get 4G LTE this summer.
Next on the list are the Equinox, Silverado, Spark and Spark EV. GM will also install 4G LTE connectivity on vehicles for Buick, GMC and Cadillac, although the carmaker has yet to confirm a launch date for those brands.Read the entire article GM to revise OnStar service as 4G LTE provider in vehicles
The 2014 Chevrolet SS is powered by a 415-hp LS3 V-8 and six-speed automatic as standard but for those who want more, there may be other variants depending on how well the existing model sells. In an interview with Automotive, Chevrolet Performance Cars marketing manager John Fitzpatrick said that there could be a model equipped with a manual transmission.
There may even be a supercharged engine. The Pontiac G8, which is the SS’ predecessor last sold in the U.S., failed to meet the projected 20,000-30,000 units a year.
As a result, the SS now has a lower sales target of 3000 units a year. If sales of the single automatic/LS3 configuration exceed expectations, versions like a supercharged model and a manual transmission option may be brought over from Australia to the U.S.Read the entire article 2014 Chevrolet SS might receive manual, supercharged variants
Chevrolet announced that the 2014 SS sport sedan will cost of $44,470, including shipping. The options offered for the SS sports sedan are quite simple: a sunroof, which costs $900 and a full-sized spare tire ($400). As expected, the 2014 Chevrolet SS sports sedan offers plenty of standard equipment, such as high intensity discharge headlamps, Automatic Parking Assist, Chevrolet MyLink with a colour touch screen and GPS-based navigation system, Bose premium audio system, color head-up display, dual-zone automatic climate control, alloy pedal covers, heated and ventilated front seats with memory, Side Blind Zone Alert and Lane Departure Warning, rear-vision camera with rear park assist, keyless access and push-button start.
Furthermore, the SS sports sedan comes with the LS3 6.2-liter small-block V8 with 415 hp (310 kW) and 415 lb-ft of torque (563 Nm). With these numbers the vehicle sprints from 0 to 60 mph in about five seconds. The SS uses a six-speed automatic transmission that can be shifted manually using TAPshift paddles mounted on the steering wheel.
2014 Chevrolet SS will be available in five exterior colors: Mystic Green, Silver Ice Metallic, Red Hot 2, Phantom Black Metallic and Heron White. All interiors will be Jet Black and feature sport front bucket seats.Read the entire article 2014 Chevrolet SS sports sedan priced at $44,470
Fans of the 2014 Chevrolet SS in Canada will be dismayed to know that this model would be offered only in the U.S. The 2014 Chevrolet SS had been released to appease fans who were saddened with the discontinuation of the Pontiac G8. According to Toronto’s The Globe and Mail, GM has decided not to sell the SS sedan in Canada.
A company representative said that it’s because the large, rear-wheel drive sedan market is too small and that Chevrolet’s Malibu and Impala are already making waves in the mid-to-large sedan segment. When we look at Canadian sales figures from 2012, the Chrysler 300 (a big rear-wheel drive sedan) sold 5,760 units, which outperformed the Chevrolet Malibu’s sales of 5,697 units.
The Dodge Charger fell behind the Malibu by 1639 sales. Meanwhile, the outgoing Impala sold 7733 units in Canada last year. Meanwhile, only 2,979 units of the rear-wheel drive Hyundai Genesis were sold. This makes it probable that Chevrolet’s product planners had the right strategy. Surely, Canadian fans are disappointed that they will be missing out on the four-door sedan’s 6.2-liter LS3 V-8 with an output of 415-hp and 415-lb-ft.Read the entire article 2014 Chevrolet SS will not be available in Canada
After all the speculations, the new Chevrolet SS sedan turned out to be nearly identical to Holden’s next-generation VF Commodore after all. The Chevrolet SS had its official unveiling only a few days after the next-generation VF Commodore was presented. Very few minor details distinguish the two models.
The introduction of the Sprint Cup car took place before the production model was unveiled. In addition, Danica Patrick held the pole position and drove a Chevrolet SS for the Daytona 500. In yet another SS-related event, GM North America chief Mark Reuss was named as the honorary pace car driver for the 2013 Daytona 500.
2014 Chevrolet SS is the first rear-drive, V-8-powered performance sedan for the brand since it stopped offering the 1996 Impala SS. The vehicle is a non-consecutive successor of the performance tradition that began with the Pontiac G8 GXP, which was powered by the 415-hp 6.2-liter LS3 V-8 that was used on the SS.Read the entire article Mark Reuss drives the 2014 Chevrolet SS pace car at the Daytona 500
Chevrolet introduced today its first V8-powered rear-wheel-drive performance sedan since 1996: ladies and gentlemen, this is your 2014 Chevrolet SS. Designed to deliver performance on the street but also on the track, the new Chevrolet SS will make its debut this weekend at the Daytona International Speedway as the SS racecar will make its NASCAR debut during Daytona 500.
Maybe all of you folks are wondering what’s under the hood of the Chevrolet SS, right? Well, we find a 6.2-liter LS3 Chevrolet V8, delivering 415 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque. With these numbers, the Chevrolet SS will be able to hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in about five seconds. The Chevrolet SS benefits from the proven, race-tested, global rear-wheel drive architecture that is the foundation for the Camaro, Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle and Holden’s VF Commodore.
Moreover, the Chevrolet SS features a sport-tuned chassis, which includes: Electronic power steering system, optimized for sport driving; standard Brembo brakes, with ventilated, 355-mm rotors and two-piece, four-piston front calipers; forged aluminum wheels, wrapped in ultra-high-performance Bridgestone tires: 19 x 8.5 inch wheels with 245/40ZR19 tires in front; 19 x 9.0 inch wheels with 275/35ZR19 tires rear. In terms of design, the Chevrolet SS features a muscular stance, with a power bulge on the aluminum hood that hints at the power of the engine underneath, a tear-drop shape at the rear that contributes to improved aerodynamic performance and new chrome accents as well as standard high-intensity discharge headlamps and light-emitting diode daytime running lights.Read the entire article Official: 2014 Chevrolet SS breaks cover
After nearly two decades of absence, rear-wheel-drive sedans will soon return to the vehicle lineup of General Motors’ Chevrolet brand in the United States. The head of GM’s North American operations, Mark Reuss, told Reuters that the carmaker is expecting the production version of the Chevrolet SS rear-wheel-drive sedan to serve as a low-volume car, thereby building excitement around the brand.
Chevrolet currently has no rear-wheel-drive sedans on its lineup except for a police car it is presently offering. Likewise, GM halted selling the rear-wheel drive Pontiac G8 sedan in 2009. GM’s luxury brand, Cadillac, currently offers two rear-wheel drive sedans -- the CTS and the new ATS.
GM launched Thursday the NASCAR racing version of the Chevrolet SS in Las Vegas and plans to unveil the production variant during the Daytona 500 race in Florida in February 2013. The Chevrolet SS will be rolled out to the public either in the third or fourth quarter of 2013 as a 2014 model.Read the entire article 2013 Nascar Chevrolet SS race car makes its debut
Chevrolet Volt owners will be able to calculate total charging costs in comparison with the total home energy use through a new app named EcoHub that OnStar is presently testing. With EcoHub, the Volt owner can monitor energy on a daily, monthly, and yearly basis. EcoHub gathers total home energy use information from the local electric company or a smart meter firm to compare it with Volt charging information to display the Volt’s percentage of total energy use.
EcoHub also measures total energy cost based on local electricity rates. It has a “Ticker” screen that shows total electric-powered miles driven compared to total miles driven as well as gallons of fuel saved in EV mode. The initial tests of the EcoHub app will be conducted by Volt owners who live in the Pecan Street smart grid living community in Austin.
OnStar is expected to later make EcoHub available for Volt owners throughout the country. The 2013 Chevrolet Volt got improvements in battery density, leading to a 38-mile EV range and an EPA-rated 98 MPGe. In September, 2851 Volt units were sold. This is its highest monthly sales yet. For the first nine months of 2012, Chevrolet sold 16,348 Volts. In a release, Paul Pebbles, global manager, Electric Vehicle and Smart Grid Services, said that eventually, this app will benefit everyone who drives electric vehicles.Read the entire article OnStar presents new EcoHub connected app that shows cost of Volt charging
A software glitch that has an impact on the OnStar communication systems has prompted General Motors to halt the sales of several 2013 vehicles making up 60,000 vehicles. According to GM spokesman Alan Adler, GM will be repairing the problem on its dealerships. The models that are affected by this issue are the 2013 Chevrolet Cruze, Equinox and Volt; the Cadillac XTS and ATS; the Buick Verano and the GMC Terrain, as well as the 2012 Cadillac SRX.
Adler said that this may be completed in “days, maybe into next week.” He talked about the nature of this defect. Because of a software problem, OnStar's crash notification system is prevented from sending an alert to the OnStar call center in accidents that don’t set off an airbag deployment, like a rear-end collision.
He clarified that this glitch doesn’t affect the crash notification system worse accidents that trigger the airbags. This glitch also doesn’t stop airbags from deploying. The OnStar emergency button is unaffected and should like the driver to an emergency adviser as it typically does. GM has given the approval for these vehicles to go on sale after GM made the repairs via a software upgrade flashed remotely through the OnStar system.Read the entire article GM halts sale of several 2013MY vehicles due to OnStar software glitch
The new design of OnStar buttons in 2013 vehicles more aptly represents its software updates, General Motors said. Rather than a white phone with a circle around it, the voice command button (which was referred to as hands-free calling button in the past) now has a general speech icon.
Aside from placing/receiving hands-free calls, the button now gives users the chance to access a saved route, check hands-free calling minutes and use OnStar Virtual Advisor, which comes with saved MapQuest directions or traffic and updates about the weather and stock.
Furthermore, the voice command button can better link up with infotainment systems like Chevrolet MyLink, Cadillac CUE and Buick/GMC IntelliLink. The emergency button now uses an internationally known SOS symbol rather than a white cross rooted in a red circle.Read the entire article GM redesigns the OnStar buttons for the 2013 models
Those who drive a General Motors Co. vehicle can use an OnStar service to rent out their under-used vehicles, permitting potential renters to unlock the doors using their smart phones. GM announced that it has partnered with online car-sharing marketplace RelayRides, which was launched in Boston in June 2010.
OnStar spokesman Vijay Iyer said that at the end of last year, GM's venture-capital arm made an investment in the company. In-vehicle service company OnStar is famous for getting drivers connected to live operators who could offer directions or call emergency help when there’s an accident.
RelayRides developers got access to several OnStar services such as features that can find the vehicle and remotely unlock the doors. The doors can be unlocked by renters by using their phones or by responding to text messages.Read the entire article OnStar subscribers now able to rent their car with RelayRides
Chevrolet officially announced today that it will launch a V8 powered, rear-wheel-drive performance sedan in the United States and that the new of the new car will be Chevrolet SS. The SS will also make its debut as the next NASCAR Sprint Cup racecar and will hit the racetrack at the 2013 Daytona 500.
The Chevrolet SS will hit the showrooms in late 2013 as a 2014 model and according to the press release it will be first rear-wheel-drive sedan for sale in the United States since 1995. The SS designation made its debut back in 1957 on a Corvette prototype race car built under the guidance of Zora Arkus-Duntov with the plan to enter it in the Le Mans 24-hour race.
After this, the first production vehicle offered with an SS option was the 1961 Impala and Chevrolet built 453 units, each featuring performance upgrades which included a modified chassis and suspension, power brakes, a steering column mounted tachometer and unique wheels and tires. The latest model featuring the SS bagde was the fifth-generation Camaro. The new SS will be a derivative of the rear-wheel-drive architecture that spawns performance vehicles like Chevrolet Camaro and Holden's upcoming VF Commodore.Read the entire article Chevrolet SS performance sedan officially announced
General Motors has named Mary Chan to be its vice president in charge of global connected consumers – a recently created post that oversees its OnStar and infotainment divisions. Chan served as Dell’s senior vice president and general manager of enterprise mobility solutions and services since 2009.
GM spokesman Vijay Iyer said that GM wanted to integrate GM’s OnStar telematics unit with its increasing infotainment offerings. These two operations shared some engineering resources but they were separated managed by different executives. Iyer said that it’s about forming a more coherent approach throughout the organization on what’s offered for the connected customer.
Chan will be reporting to GM Vice Chairman Steve Girsky, who oversees OnStar. In 2011, GM has unveiled new infotainment systems across its brands, such as MyLink for Chevrolet and IntelliLink for Buick and GMC.Read the entire article Mary Chan to oversee GM’s OnStar and infotainment divisions
Linda Marshall has resigned as president of the OnStar Corp., a subsidiary of General Motors Corp, to “pursue other interests.” Marshall’s resignation came one year she was selected by GM CEO Dan Akerson to head the Onstar. In a statement, GM said that under Marshall’s leadership, OnStar was able to restructure the organization and to implement important long-term initiatives “to further grow the business in the future and strengthen its foundation.”
Following Marshall’s resignation, Terry Inch, director of OnStar sales, marketing and business planning, temporarily oversees the unit’s daily operations while GM has yet to find a replacement.
Prior to her stint as OnStar president, she had worked for Akerson when he was chief executive of Nextel Communications Inc. She was appointed president of the telematics unit in February 2011, replacing public relations executive Chris Preuss. Among her accomplishments as OnStar president was the expansion of the GM units into overseas markets, particularly China.Read the entire article Linda Marshall quits as president of GM’s OnStar division
