The five-door, four-seater Renault Twingo will now be available with French carmaker’s innovative gearbox, the Efficient Dual Clutch transmission (EDC). This transmission, which will be paired with the vehicle’s TCe90 engine, is basically an automatic dual dry clutch transmission dispensing that requires a clutch pedal.
It features the PRND gearshift control with an 'up/down' shift mode. An electronic control unit is tasked to select the ideal gear. In addition, the gearshifts are automatic. The availability of the EDC transmission on Twingo should mean that this gearbox can now be fitted on majority of the range, for just £900 more than the equivalent manual version.
With a very quick shift time of 290ms, the EDC transmission allows for comfortable and smooth trips. This transmission features a ‘creep’ control, which should prove to be a great help during crawling traffic, as it helps pull the vehicle away gradually when the driver steps off from brake pedal.Read the entire article EDC Transmission is now available on 2016 Renault Twingo
In a car with a manual transmission, the clutch is a very important component as it connects and disconnects the drive shafts. Even under normal use, the lifespan of the clutch is typically shorter than the car. When you change gears, the clutch also suffers wear and tear. How long can a clutch in a manual transmission last?
Some cars owners may see their car clutches fail at 30,000 miles or below. This usually happens to drivers who are typically rough in changing gears. There are car owners who may see their clutch start malfunctioning at around 50,000 miles. Drivers who are usually smooth with their gear changes may see their car clutches live until 100,000. In an environment where frequent gear changes aren’t needed – along drivers who are efficient in gear shifting – can see some clutches reach a lifespan of more than 100,000 miles. Thus, there is really no exact number with regards to the lifespan of a car clutch.
While nothing is really sure on the specific lifespan of a car clutch, there is one thing that is certain – clutches are really susceptible to wear and tear, even more than the car itself. Thus, a clutch usually fails even before the car dies. This means a clutch may have to be replaced at one point of a car’s life. The actual lifespan of a clutch depends of many variables.Read the entire article How long does your car clutch last?
When driving a car with a manual transmission, it is imperative to first depress the clutch pedal before up-shifting or down-shifting gears. Once this pedal is depressed to the floor, the clutch disengages, thereby disconnecting the engine from the transmission. At this moment, the driver can shift up or down the gears. But do you know you can shift gears in manual transmission without having to use the clutch pedal?
Typically, you have to depress the clutch pedal to disengage the clutch. Shifting gears while the clutch is engaged isn't advisable as this could damage the gears, especially their teeth. Disengaging the clutch essentially cut off the power supply from the engine. Since the shifting process doesn’t have to work again power and torque, the gears won’t get damaged. Once you take your foot off from the clutch pedal, the clutch engages once again to connect the engine to the transmission.
However, it is possible to shift gears up or down without having to depress the clutch pedal. This means that you are shifting gears while the clutch is still engaged, and the engine is still connected to the transmission. Being able to shift gears without using the pedal could mean a lot when you are driving and the clutch seemed to have failed.Read the entire article Slip-Shifting – How to drive a manual transmission car without using the clutch

When a car has been in the market for nearly six years, it loses some of its luster and its customers tend to go for the all-new model with a whole new level of features offerings instead. Good thing the South Korean carmaker isn’t ignorant of the fact that the second generation of its Kia Picanto small car is nearing the end of its life cycle.
This is why for the model year 2017, Kia will be releasing the new and third generation of the Kia Picanto small car. The Picanto has been repeatedly spied, although it was in its camouflage form in a bid to conceal its new looks. As planned, the South Korean carmaker will unveil the all-new 2017 Kia Picanto in the early part of next year. But before that, Kia has released a set of images providing a better view of the 2017 Picanto small car.
According to Kia, the new Picanto is a fusion of a youthful and energetic new exterior as well as interior design. Moreover, the new Kia Picanto offers customers the chance to personalize their rides when it comes to both the exterior and the interior. Nearly two weeks after teasing us with two rendered illustrations of the next generation of the Kia Picanto small car, the South Korean carmaker has released official images of the new vehicle.
The teaser images released in December provided us some good ideas on how the next gen PIcanto would look like. Those images worked as they should be, teasing us and telling us the third generation of the Picanto looks more aggressive and sportier than the current generation small car from Kia.
Now, Kia has released more images with clearer renditions of the upcoming third-gen Picanto. Unlike the initial teaser images, these new ones present both the exterior and interior appearances of the new Picanto. If there are any differences between the first images and the new ones, it is that the third-gen white Kia Picanto – in GT-Line specs -- on the recent renditions doesn’t look as mean and as aggressive as the black version on the initial renders. Well, this could be because of the differences in the color of the small cars, the angling of the renders and the background used. Nevertheless, the third-gen Picanto has a more aggressive stance and bolder lines than the current generation.Read the entire article Here are the official images of third-generation Kia Picanto
Within the next four years, Toyota plans to bring its latest drivetrains in about 60% of all its vehicles sold in China, Europe, US and of course in Japan. The new hybrid technology is said to boost the car’s acceleration that will help reduce fuel consumption.
From what was reported earlier, Toyota will be introducing its latest 10-speed gearbox along with the new engine that saves on fuel by at least 20%. Beginning next year, Toyota will be using its brand new engine technology, which will come with the latest hybrid system. Among its new innovations are 2 new transmissions and a 2.5 litre 4-cylinder engine.
Joining the new line of power plant (otherwise known as Toyota’s “Dynamic Force Engines”) is none other than its 2.5 litre four cylinder with direct injection. This by far is the most energy efficient of all engines bringing at least 41% energy efficiency for hybrids and about 40% for gasoline fueled models. In other words, when less energy is consumed due to internal friction, the engine is more capable of sending more HPs to the wheels.Read the entire article Toyota to launch new 2.5 L petrol engine, hybrid system and 10-speed gearbox

Tata Motors builds what is considered as the cheapest car in the world, the Nano. Tata launched the Nano in 2009 at a tag of around $2,500, attracting low-income households in India who could only afford motorcyles. Ratan Tata, the carmaker’s chairman emeritus who championed the development of the car, is now rethinking the “cheap” tag of the Nano.
Tata remarked at the South Carolina Automotive Summit that the Nano got branded as India’s cheapest car, not the most affordable or the best value for the money. He noted that the Nano gained the stigma of “I don’t want to be seen in the cheapest car. My neighbors will think I have no money.”
Tata, who retired as chairman in December 2012, said the company is trying to reposition the Nano into a real car “with more bells and whistles” that would stand out in the marketplace. During an on-stage interview with Automotive News Editor-in-Chief Keith Crain, Tata quipped that he pushed for development of the Nano to provide low-income Indian families a safer transportation alternative than motorcycles.Read the entire article Tata wants to get rid of “cheapest” tag for the Nano

Toyota Motor Corp. is planning to stop selling the Scion iQ after the size, price and fuel economy of its smallest car didn’t get the attention of buyers in the United States. In fact, Toyota only sold 2,040 iQs in the US in 2014 for a 50-percent drop, as the carmaker allowed its dealers to submit orders based on demand, according to Scion’s brand chief Doug Murtha.
He told Bloomberg at the Detroit auto show that the iQ won’t be “staying in the lineup too much longer.” Scion currently offers four models, after stopping output of the the xD ended in July 2014. Toyota, however, is planning to roll out three Scion models in the next three years, including two this year as it tries to revive the now struggling brand which sales dropped 15 percent in 2014 to just 58,009.
Murtha remarked that the iQ was a “healthy experiment” that allowed Toyota to learned important lessons about US consumers’ preferences. Customers found the small size of the iQ non-appealing, even if Toyota tried to assured them that the vehicle was engineered to achieve a four-star crash rating and even features 11 airbags.Read the entire article Toyota drops Scion iQ in the US after dismal sales performance
Honda Motor Co. has ordered its dealers in the United States to stop sales of a nine-speed version of its 2015 Acura TLX as the parking lock may fail to engage and the sedan may roll away even while in park mode, the carmaker said in a statement on its Web site. The stop-sale order comes after Honda recalled its Fit models in Japan over software glitches and at least 13 million vehicles fitted with possibly faulty Takata Corp. airbags. Volkswagen Group has started producing its dual-clutch transmission at its new site in Tianjin, China. VW invested EUR265 million (CHY2 billion) into the plant, which has the capacity to build up to 450,000 units of the carmaker’s direct-shift gearboxes (DSG) annually, and eventually 1.2 million units by 2016. Nissan Motor Co. has issued a recall of 14,438 MY2014 Infiniti Q50 and Q70 luxury hybrid sedans around the world over potential software and transmission issues. The sedans are being recalled since their electric motor may stop running due to a communications error between the motor inverter and transmission control module, according to the carmaker and documents posted at the Web site of the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The recall covers 7,539 Q50 and Q70 hybrid sedans sold in Japan, 5,412 in the US and territories, and the rest in other markets. The stall-like condition may happen when the electric motor stops working, thereby increasing the risk of a crash, according to the NHTSA documents.
The problem, however, does not manifest when the sedan is driving highway speeds while the internal combustion engine is being employed. The Japanese carmaker discovered the issue following a "field incident" in Japan in August, although it was not aware of any incident in the US market, according to NHTSA documents.Read the entire article Infiniti recalls over 14,000 hybrid sedans to fix software and transmission issues
