2019 Geneva: Alfa Romeo Tonale Concept previews new new plug-in hybrid CUV

Alfa Romeo is signaling with pure clarity its intent to enter the compact utility vehicle segment with a new concept that is currently being displayed at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show in Switzerland. This new concept car – the new Alfa Romeo Tonale – combines practicality, dynamism, style as well as electrification.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale show car essentially marks a new milestone for the brands. It is the brand’s first compact SUV, albeit in concept form. Moreover, the Tonale is Alfa Romeo’s first entry into the world of electric cars, although in plug-in hybrid configuration. 2014 Paris: Lamborghini Asterion Concept looks like a plug-in hybrid modern Miura [Live Photos]

It was not a secret that Lamborghini is working on a hybrid supercar, just like its rivals, but the new Asterion Concept is the first concept to show company’s intentions. Asterion Concept carries the same 5.2-liter V10 naturally aspirated engine found on the Huracan LP 610-4, which delivers 610 hp (449 kW) and 560 Nm of torque, combined with three electric motors providing a further 300 hp (220 kW).

The total output of the hybrid system is 910 hp (669 kW) and thanks to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission that delivers the power to the road via a permanent all-wheel drive system, the Asterion is able to hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.0 seconds, while offering a top speed of 320 km/h or 200 mph.

Using just the electric motors, the concept car has a top speed of 125 km/h (77 mph) and a range of 50 km or 31 miles. Thanks to the hybrid system, the Asterion Concept is the most fuel-efficient vehicle in company’s history with a combined 4.12 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 98 g/km.

2014 Paris Motor Show: Lamborghini Asterion LPI 910-4 Concept is company’s first PHEV

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the all-new Lamborghini Asterion LPI 910-4 Concept, company’s first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicle that previews a green future. Conceived and developed in-house by Lamborghini, the new Asterion Concept follows the same design philosophy seen on the current lineup, featuring large front air intakes, stylish headlights, large side air intakes and a transparent engine cover.

The rear end gets impressive LED taillights inspired by the Veneno as well as a stylish rear bumper with integrated air diffuser and exhaust system. The exterior design is completed by the Blue Elektra colour and the 20-inch (front)/21-inch (rear) wheels with carbon fiber components. In order to highlight the Italian heritage, the Asterion Concept gets a lit tricolore flag on the door and a Raging Bull shield embedded in the side.

Open the door and you will see a minimal, yet modern interior that reflects the exterior design. The interior is wrapped in extensive Bianco Celaeno (ivory) and Marrone Attis (brown) leather but also features aluminum and forged carbon fiber as well as titanium, which is visible on the steering wheel. Volvo S60L Petrol Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PPHEV) Concept unveiled at Auto China 2014

Volvo Cars is set to unveil the new Volvo S60L PPHEV (Petrol Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) Concept Car at the 2014 Beijing International Auto Show. The new Volvo S60L PPHEV is a fusion of an electric car, hybrid car and high-performance car, thereby allowing the driver to enjoy both dynamic driving pleasure and superior fuel economy.

Volvo plans to introduce the production version of the S60L Petrol Plug-in Hybrid in China in early 2015, with the production set at its Chengdu assembly site. The new production version of the S60L PPHEV will employ a highly efficient 238-hp Drive-E petrol turbo and plug-in hybrid technology. The new hybrid car is part of Volvo Cars' plans to play in a role to the development and proliferation of new auto technologies in China.

Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President for Research and Development at Volvo Cars, remarked that the S60L PPHEV Concept Car combines a turbocharged petrol mill from the carmaker’s new four-cylinder Drive-E engine family and an electric motor, resulting to a hybrid powertrain with a power output of 238+68 hp and torque of 350+200 Nm. Mertens remarked that this combo resulted to Volvo’s most technologically advanced powertrain so far, making the S60L both the most efficient and most fun-to-drive car. He added that the S60L PPHEV Concept Car brings Volvo close to its vision of offering zero-emission vehicles in the future.

Fisker Automotive revealed a concept variant of its Atlantic plug-in hybrid sedan, which is anticipated to have a price range of $50,000 to $60,000. It is also expected to have a size similar to the BMW 3-series or Audi A5. The Atlantic is equipped with a BMW four-cylinder engine, which serves as a generator for a second-generation Fisker lithium-ion battery pack powering the electric motors

The vehicle will be offered in both all-wheel drive and rear-drive configurations. The Atlantic concept shares much of the styling of the $103,000 Karma sedan. It boasts of a glass roof with an X-shaped cross-brace, providing more headroom to rear-seat occupants.

The wheels of the vehicle are pushed to the corners, allowing additional legroom for occupants. Executives at Fisker did not give other details about the vehicle, including assembly location, car dimensions, on-sale date and price.

As standard, the Centoventi comes out of the factory with one battery that delivers a range of 100 km. If a customer needs to travel a longer distance, he or she may opt to install another battery to give the Centoventi a total range of 200 km.

Aston Martin’s Lagonda luxury marque is confirming its plans to launch an all-new crossover in the near future by unveiling a new concept at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Dubbed as the Lagonda All-Terrain Concept, this show car essentially serves as a preview to the brand’s upcoming crossover.

According to Lagonda, the All-Terrain Concept is an ultra-stylish, luxurious, all-electric emission-free vehicle. This marks a new step into the brand’s goal of becoming the first luxury electric automotive brand in the world. The All-Terrain Concept basically builds on the designs and materials in the Lagonda Vision Concept that was unveiled last year. While the Vision Concept was design to be driven purely on the road, the All-Terrain Concept pushes the boundary by showing that a luxurious drive could also done off the road.

While the exterior of the Lagonda Vision Concept was inspired by the Concorde, the Lagonda All-Terrain Concept, on the other hand, was initially influenced world of the super yacht. Nissan has unveiled at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show a new concept vehicle which design and advance technology provides a glimpse of what customers can expected from Nissan’s next generation of crossovers. Aside from the next generation of the e-POWER, the new IMQ comes fitted an advanced prototype version of Nissan's ProPILOT driving assistance system and the carmaker’s Invisible-to-Visible technology that was revealed at the CES 2019. Audi has finally taken the veil off its latest electrified creation at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show – the new the Audi Q4 e-tron concept. This new concept car is a compact four-door SUV that basically provides a good look at the German premium carmaker’s fifth batter electric vehicle that would enter the automotive market by the end of 2020.

Wrapped in “Solar Sky” paint finish, the exterior of the new Audi Q4 e-tron concept is only constrained by its compact dimensions pegged at 4.59 meters in length, 1.90 meters in width and 1.61 meters in height, with a wheelbase of 2.77 meters. It is almost impossible not to indentify the Q4 e-tron concept as an Audi, as the prototype is marked by on the front end by Singleframe with the four rings.

Furthermore, it is also fairly easy to distinguish the concept as an electric Audi e-tron as it features upright octagonal frame instead of a traditional radiator grille. Large inlets can be found extending from below the concept’s two matrix LED headlights to the front apron.

It looks like Aston Martin will soon be following up its Valkyrie and Valkyrie AMR Pro offerings with a third hypercar. This comes as Aston Martin presented the design concept for the new AM-RB 003 at the 2019 Geneva Motor Showin Switzerland.

Its terms of styling and aerodynamics, the new AM-RB 003 shares the same fundamental philosophy with the Aston Martin Valkyrie. This is evident on the pronounced front keel and large rear diffuser. In addition, the AM-RB 003 features a variable airfoil that spans across the rear wing. This variable airfoil is made possible by a new technology from FlexSys Inc. – FlexFoil.

With this new system in place, the downforce AM-RB 003 can be changed without changing the physical angle of the entire element. This new system also virtually gets rid of the turbulence and the associated drag increase in present active wing designs.

It has been three years since Toyota’s luxury division, Lexus, unveiled the LC Coupe at the 2016 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), which is also known as the Detroit Auto Show. Now at the same venue, Lexus is presenting to the global public an open -top study of the LC Coupe – the Lexus LC Convertible Concept.

As the luxury carmaker puts it, the Lexus LC Convertible Concept suggests future direction of its LC flagship. The premium carmaker calls the LC Convertible Concept as an aspirational halo vehicle for the entire Lexus lineup. In terms of looks, the LC Convertible Concept is essentially the LC Coupe without a fixed roof. For three years, not a few have imagine how the LC Coupe would appear if it become a convertible. The LC Convertible Concept is the realization of this imagination in metal.

As Tadao Mori, Chief Designer of the Lexus LC Convertible Concept, quipped, the show car re-imagines the unmistakable design of the LC Coupe as a future convertible. He added that the LC Convertible Concept is a blend all the best aspects of the original LC Coupe, but with the dynamic design of a convertible.

According to the German premium carmaker, the production version of the Audi e-tron GT concept is set to arrive in around two years. This means that could expect the third member of the e-tron family by late 2020, with initial deliveries set in early 2021. It follows the Audi e-tron SUV as well as the Audi e‑tron Sportback scheduled for 2019.

Carlex Design isn't a beginner with regards to tuning the Mercedes-Benz X-Class. In fact, it has even created a version with Maybach-like appearance and features. It has also created Off-Road-focused and Urban-tailored versions. Now, Carlex Design seems to be not contented with how far it has gone with the X-Class and is now presenting a new concept design for the luxury SUV from Mercedes.

Indeed, the Mercedes-Benz X-Class represents the luxury side of pickup trucks. While offering a drive that is comparable to a sports utility vehicle, the X-Class also delivers a smooth, comfortable ride that is expected of luxurious vehicles. Furthermore, it is laden with features usually found in premium cars. But at Carlex Design, the X-Class can be turned into luxurious 6x6 beast off the road. This can be well seen on the new X-Class Exy 6x6 Concept by Carlex Design.

The X-Class Exy 6x6 Concept is essentially the X-Class evolved into a whole new luxurious beast. It is much different from Carlex Design’s previous re-imaginations of Mercedes’ luxury pickup. The concept pickup has six wheels – two wheels more than a standard X-Class and previous Carlex Design X-Class creations. This also meant an extra axle on the rear section of this X-Class 6x6. The addition of two wheels naturally resulted to an extended bed, allowing this conversion of the X-Class to load and carry a greater volume of cargo.

Imagining the future of automotive luxury more than three decades from now seems to be a daunting task. It would be hard for a typical person imagine such future without having the sense of vision and an eye for design. But for students at the Royal College of Arts in London, imagining how automotive luxury would look like in the future is their true calling.

In a dynamic collaboration, Bentley and Royal College of Arts (RCA) sought how the automotive luxury could be defined in 2050, or more than 30 years from now. The collaboration asked student at the world renowned RCA to imagine a truly luxurious Grand Touring experience for the future, by employing elements of physical materiality, technology and craftsmanship – all of which refuse to die even this era of virtual and digital world.

Interestingly, the current Design Director at Bentley was a graduate at the RCA. Stefan Sielaff, an alumnus of the RCA’s renowned Automotive Design program, remarked that the collaboration challenged millennial students for their vision of the automotive future, as laden with luxury.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles are increasingly the mobility of choice for many people. For short drives around the city or urban areas, plug-in hybrid can be switched to all-electric mode for a zero-emission driving experience. However, current plug-in hybrids can only offer up to 50 km (31 miles) of all-electric range.

Mercedes-Benz is hoping to break the status quo by not just surpassing the 50-km barrier, but also offering up to 100 km (62 miles) in pure electric range. Quite a number of plug-in hybrids still offer 30 km of electric range, while there is an increasing number of models that are engineered to reach 50 km.

As divulged by Ola Kallenius, head of Daimler group research and Mercedes-Benz cars development, the upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLE PHEV will be the first plug-in hybrid to offer a 100-km range, as per WLTP cycle.

Just last month, Porsche unveiled the new 935 during the “Rennsport Reunion” motorsport event at Laguna Seca Raceway in California. Featuring a body evoking the legendary Porsche 935/78, the 935 is definitely a race car you would want to drive in the track. Nonetheless, it isn't car you can just drive on the road from your garage to the track. After all, the 935 is a track-only race car and can’t be driven legally on the road.

The problem of getting a track-only race car from a garage to the circuit without circumventing any laws or local ordinances has already been solved a long time ago. To solve such a logistic issue, teams or carmakers have been using transporters, which can be large enough to accommodate more than one race car.

Such a situation is the main theme of one of the latest creative visual projects of Igor Shikitov, an automotive designer from Moscow, Russia. Posted at the Behance social creative site on October 3, 2018, Shikitov’s work was aptly titled “Volkswagen Renntransporter.” After all Porsche is now part of the Volkswagen Group.

Ever since the Jeep Renegade compact sports utility vehicle arrived in 2014, it has been powered by diesel, gasoline or flex (gasoline plus ethanol) engines. But by the start of the decade (2020), the Renegade will also feature a new electrified version, and Fiat Chrysler is already preparing for its production.

In an announcement, FCA basically confirmed the arrival of the all-new Jeep Renegade Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) in 2020. It will be produced at the FCA Melfi Plant in Italy, where the carmaker is also building the conventionally powered Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X models. The Renegade has been built at its vehicle assembly plant in Melfi, Italy as well as in production locations in Brazil and China. It is the first Jeep product to be built exclusively outside of North America.

Pietro Gorlier, Chief Operating Officer for FCA’s EMEA region, noted that more 742,000 Renegades have already been produced so far at the Melfi facility, making the compact SUV and the plant the ideal product and location to launch Jeep’s new PHEV offering.

When BMW finally commences sales of the heavily anticipated 8-Series Coupe, it will offer the all-new flagship in two powerful engine variants – a petrol-powered biturbo 4.4 liter V8 unit and a diesel-fueled 3.0 liter biturbo inline six mill. Nonetheless, there are customers hoping that new BMW 8 Series would be offered with a V12 engine or a plug-in hybrid drive, but the German premium has no plans for those.

Carsten Groeber, vice-president of product management at BMW Group, was quoted by Australian magazine GoAuto at the 2018 Paris Motor Show as saying that a V12-powered 8 Series won't happen. The BMW 7 Series -- the M760Li xDrive in particular – is powered by a 6.0-liter V12 petrol engine that can provide 601 hp (448 kW) of output and 590 lb.-ft. (800 Nm) of peak torque. This allows the M760Li xDrive to dash from zero to 100km/h in just 3.7 seconds.

Groeber noted that the V8 engine and the in-line six unit already allows for a perfect weight distribution with the new 8 Series. Since the V12 engine is a very heavy mill, it would destroy this weight distribution, particularly making the front too heavy. He remarked that the V8-powered 8 Series is already a proper sportscar.

It was only in June this year when Porsche unveiled the 911 Speedster Concept. Perhaps due to overwhelming response or just a part of its plans, the German sports maker has disclosed at the 2018 Paris Motor Show that it will be putting the Porsche 911 Speedster into production.

At the same time, Porsche unveiled at the event the second concept of the 911 Speedster. Essentially, the 911 Speedster Concept II and the 911 Speedster Concept are identical, with the differences being their paintwork and finishes as well as their wheels.

Both 911 Speedster concepts feature shorter window frame with a more inclined windscreen as well as shortened side windows – resulting to a stockier profile. Both concepts also come with a special rear cover made from carbon fiber, featuring a double bubble cover behind the front seats.

Infiniti is planning to commence the electrification of vehicle portfolio in 2021. All-new Infiniti models will be electrified either as fully electric models or hybrid units. Drawing on expertise from across the holy alliance between Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi, the Project Black S represents the commitment of Infiniti to develop exciting high-performance electrified powertrains.

Both the 2017 and 2018 Project Black S models are based from the Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400 sports coupe. The 2017 show car was essentially an initial vision for motorsport-inspired aesthetics and aerodynamics. It was an early design vision to develop a highly focused dual-hybrid super sports car. The 2017 prototype is fully operational, functioning high-speed model that can be taken to the track for validation. The Renault Sport Formula One Team worked to ensured that the aerodynamics of the 2018 prototype is further optimized.
