BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage Concept unveiled at Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este

For this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, BMW left us speechless as it presented its new BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage Concept, a vehicle that pays tribute to the iconic 3.0 CSL from the 1970s. For those who don’t know, “CSL” stands for “Coupe Sport Leichtbau” (coupe, sport, lightweight) and the 1970 BMW 3.0 CSL featured an aluminum bonnet, boot and wings, Plexiglas windows and equipment pared down to the bare essentials.

Those features made the 3.0 CSL 200 kg lighter than its sibling model, the BMW 3.0 CS. If in 1970 the material of choice was aluminum, today carbon fiber or carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) offers the optimum weight-to-strenght ratio. The man behind the concept is Karim Habib, Head of BMW Design and according to him, the new vehicle wants people to sense the family resemblance rather than see it straight off.

The first visual impact with the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage shows an elongated body set off by distinctive air deflectors, muscular wheel arches as well as prominent spoilers for the roof and tail. The front air deflector is used to vent the engine compartment, while the wings over the rear wheels ensure optimum airflow around the vehicle.

Lamborghini 5-95 Zagato introduced at the 2014 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este [w/video]

Lamborghini 5-95 Zagato project is derived from an official partnership between Automobili Lamborghini and Zagato that aims to create a real contemporary collectible car.

Considered as the first Zagato-bodied Lamborghini, the 3500 GTZ was a "fuoriserie" derived from the 350 GT mechanics, as commissioned by Marquis Gerino Gerini in 1965. Around half a century later, one of the renowned Lamborghini collectors in the world -- Albert Spiess -- commissioned Zagato to transform the Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 into a modern collectible car: the Lamborghini 5-95 Zagato.

Spiess is known for owning an extraordinary collection of vehicles like a number of one-off vehicles and Lamborghini’s first cars. Spiess also owns a number of Zagato collectibles like the Aston Martin V8 Zagato (1985), Alfa Romeo S.Z. (1990) and R.Z. (1993) and V12 Zagato (2012). Just as Zagato is celebrating its 95th anniversary, Spiess commissioned to convert the Gallardo LP570-4 – considered as Lamborghini’s best-selling car in its first 50 years – into a modern collectible car called as the Lamborghini 5-95 Zagato.

MINI Superleggera Vision Concept arrives at Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2014 [w/videos]

What came as a total surprise for the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este is the MINI Superleggera Vision Concept, an exclusive interpretation of an open-top two-seater created by MINI and the well-known coachbuilder Touring Superleggera. Taking a closer look at the MINI Superleggera Vision Concept we can see a classic roadster, a compact and agile two-seater that expresses the minimalist and emotional style of motoring.

What’s more interesting is that the concept is fitted with an electric drivetrain and insiders suggest that this is a development of that used by the popular BMW i3. As you may expect it, the MINI Superleggera Vision Concept is seen as a rival for the Mazda MX-5.

Regarding the design, we find the traditional MINI design icons such as the two circular headlights and the hexagonal grille. In addition, the two fog lights resemble the circular contours of the headlamps and provide a smaller interpretation of them in the radiator grille.
