Bentley celebrates its 100 years with Continental GT Number 9 Edition by Mulliner

Bentley Motors’ centenary celebration is just getting started. As the iconic British carmaker unveiled the fastest production SUV in the world so far, it is also celebrating 100 years of existence by unveiling a limited edition collectors’ car – the new Bentley Continental GT Number 9 Edition by Mulliner.

Ever since W.O. Bentley founded Bentley Motors on July 10, 1919, the working principle at the carmaker has always been “build a fast car, a good car, the best in its class.” Nearly 100 years since then, Bentley’s celebratory model is seen to live to that principle. After all, the Continental GT Number 9 Edition by Mulliner is inspired by the carmaker’s illustrious motorsport history.

In fact, the Continental GT Number 9 Edition by Mulliner is paying homage to Sir Henry Ralph Stanley “Tim” Birkin. Considered as one of the original ‘Bentley Boys’ of the 1920s and ‘30s, Birkin wasn’t just a customer but also a racing driver. Back then, Birkin commissioned a series of 4 1/2 Litre supercharged Bentley Blower. One of these was raced by Birkin himself at the 1930 Le Mans 24 Hours. As you may have guessed, Birkin piloted the iconic No.9 Bentley Blower – with power increased from 110 bhp to 175 bhp -- at the race.

Bentley is considering more Bentayga variants to stay competitive

Should Bentley come up with more variants of the Bentayga? Well, according to their CEO Wolfgang Durheimer, it seems that they should do that so they won’t get left behind by their rivals. In an interview with Autocar, Durheimer said that derivatives are important because of the urgency to be “the newest kid in town for customers”.

The British automaker has got some very exciting plans for its plans to expand its lineup. For instance, the company wants to build a quicker version of what is already out there. So what variants should we expect from Bentley? Well, they did a rendering of a coupe version so that’s likely to be on their plate. They also intend to produce a more potent GT3 R in line with the Continental that bears the same name.

But CEO Durheimer has made it clear that none of these ideas are certain yet.

Watch out for unveiling of ‘Most Extreme Bentley Ever’ on January 6

Bentley will be launching the next generation of its Continental GT coupe sometime late this year. This has got us very excited. After all, the current generation of the Continental GT has been in existence for nearly six years. It’s high time that Bentley introduces a new generation of its grand tourer.

But it seems Bentley isn’t done yet with the current generation of the Continental GT – the second one as it plans to unveil a new version that would render the previous Bentleys speechless. In fact, Bentley has released a short video clip that teases the newest – and probably the last – iteration of the second-gen Continental GT. This version has been dubbed by the British carmaker as the most “the most extreme Bentley ever,” which could ultimately point to its performance on the road. All will be known when Bentley takes the wrap off this latest vehicle on January 6, 2017.

While the short video teaser didn’t say something about this Bentley being a Continental GT, the Continental GT is the only current model that allows the marque to push its performance limits further. We could speculate that the model shown on the teaser video is the Continental Supersports. The first generation of the Continental GT features a Supersports version. The Continental Supersports was the most powerful version of the first-gen Continental GT, with its 6.0-liter W12 twin-turbo engine providing 621 hp (630 PS or 463 kW) of max output at 6,00 rpm and 800 Nm (590 lb.-ft.) of torque available at 1,700 rpm.

Bentley is planning to launch a sportier, coupe-like version of its first SUV, the Bentayga. According to Bentley CEO Wolfgang Duerheimer, a top-of-the-line performance enhanced by advanced technology and engineering is expected for the Bentayga. However, the project still needs further approval. The Bentayga sports coupe is being crafted to perfection to lure the youth into the British brand, which is best known for showing around Queen Elizabeth II in London.

Bentley, the first luxury vehicle brand to introduce a modern SUV, is expected to compete with the likes of Lamborghini, Maserati, Rolls-Royce, and other emerging brands. Duerheimer said that Bentley anticipates rivals to enter the scene by 2018 or 2019. He added, "When they arrive, I want to have an answer."

The final design is still being worked on but Duerheimer claimed that the Bentayga will most likely resemble the EXP 10 Speed 6 concept coupe that was launched at the 2015 Geneva Auto Show. The executive expressed, "Imagine the EXP 10 as an SUV." According to Bentley Head of Design Stefan Sielaff, there are many teams trying to come up with the vehicle's final styling and design. Over the last three years, the global sales of Bentley have topped 10,000 units.

Under the hood, there is the iconic 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12 engine that now develops 635 hp (467 kW) and an impressive 820 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque.

By sometime around 2014, Bentley will launch a 650bhp-plus Continental Supersports model as a new high-performance flagship coupé. This lightweight model will feature carbonfibre panels and stiffer suspension. It’s possible that its cabin will be stripped out. It’s also likely that its twin-turbo W12 will have a higher output.

In autumn 2009, Bentley launched a Supersports in advance of the run-out of the former-gen Continental GT. However, this new car will soon be a long-term element of this range. The Supersports will bridge the gap from the existing 616bhp Speed model to the much awaited road-going Continental GT3 with an output of more than 675bhp that Bentley hopes to launch in 2015 together with a race-ready Continental GT3 customer car.

The Supersports’ output will be higher than that of the Speed by 30bhp or so. This is comparable to what Porsche does to its models, which can be distinguished with small power differences. According to a Bentley insider, the Supersports won’t be about “pure power” since there’s a limit to the amount of power that can be extracted.

The visitors were impressed by the new design of the Continental GT and all the important automotive magazines had only positive feedback.

However, Bentley announced that it will introduce a smaller V8 engine which could use the dual-clutch Audi S Tronic transmission. Powered by the W12 engine, the car hits 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds), 100mph in 10.2 seconds (0-160km/h in 10.2 seconds) and has a top speed of 198 mph (318km/h).

Bentley Motors' promise of a green vehicle that would have flex-fuel capability will be delayed. Many were disappointed with this news since Bentley had been touting that its fastest and most powerful model ever will make its debut soon.

The 2010 Continental Supersports car is estimated to be priced at $267,000 and will have 12 cylinders, 621 horsepower and boast a top speed of 204 mph. The 2010 Supersports was also intended to be the first model capable of running on bio-fuels like E85. However, Bentley encountered several setbacks and so the first Supersports to hit our shores will only run on gasoline.

Bentley representatives confirmed that various U.S. homologation red-tape and engineering challenges, such as the fitment of hardened valve seats, mean that the first 200 Supersports to arrive will not have the promised flex-fuel capability. Bentley assures though that subsequent Supersports will be capable of running on bio-fuel.

Finally, after few weeks from revealing the first teaser, Bentley unveiled today its brand new Continental Supersports, the first green car in the history of the British manufacturer. As we revealed you few days ago, the new Bentley features the 6.0-liter W12 engine capable to deliver 630 hp at 6000 rpm and 800 Nm of torque at 1700-5600 rpm.

With these numbers, the Bentley can hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.9 seconds while the top speed is limited electronically to 329 km/h (204 mph). The new vehicle features carbon ceramic brakes as standard but also 20-inch alloy wheels and a unique electronic stability programme.

But don't think the new amount of power comes without new modifications: the W12 engine necessitated additional airflow to the twin turbocharger intercoolers and cooling system and in order to solve this Bentley's designers responded with a purposeful and dramatic style that features large vertical intake apertures and twin bonnet vents.

The new Audi TT RS – yes, the top version of the German carmaker’s facelifted TT model series – is now officially here. If you could remember, the range-topping TT RS Coupe and Roadster were visually absent when Audi unveiled the facelifted TT model series in July 2018. That got some worried, so Audi is allaying those worries.

As introduced by the brand with the Four Rings, the latest iteration of the Audi TT RS Coupe and Roadster boasts of completely redrawn front end. However, most of us won't be able to distinguish the newest TT RS models from their predecessors right away. It would take discerning eyes – especially those of Audi TT RS fans and enthusiasts – to know how the latest iterations differ visually from the previous model.

For instance, the lateral air intakes on the front bumper are now larger, each divided by vertical strips. In addition, the quattro logo -- in matt titanium-look – is located in the lower part of the gloss black grille that is surrounded by matt black Singleframe. The grille is flanked by LED headlights as standard, or by optional matrix LED units.

Imagining the future of automotive luxury more than three decades from now seems to be a daunting task. It would be hard for a typical person imagine such future without having the sense of vision and an eye for design. But for students at the Royal College of Arts in London, imagining how automotive luxury would look like in the future is their true calling.

In a dynamic collaboration, Bentley and Royal College of Arts (RCA) sought how the automotive luxury could be defined in 2050, or more than 30 years from now. The collaboration asked student at the world renowned RCA to imagine a truly luxurious Grand Touring experience for the future, by employing elements of physical materiality, technology and craftsmanship – all of which refuse to die even this era of virtual and digital world.

Interestingly, the current Design Director at Bentley was a graduate at the RCA. Stefan Sielaff, an alumnus of the RCA’s renowned Automotive Design program, remarked that the collaboration challenged millennial students for their vision of the automotive future, as laden with luxury.
