New-vehicle sales of Daihatsu in Europe will stop at the end of January 2013. A subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corp., Daihatsu explained that because of the strong yen, exporting vehicles to Europe from Japan has become too unprofitable.
Another factor that had a role in this decision is the rising cost of developing models that comply with tighter CO2 emission regulations in Europe. However, Daihatsu clarified that it will continue to supply parts and after sales services in Europe after 2013.
From 11.9% of oversees sales in 2005, European deliveries of Daihatsu cars dropped to only 5.3% in 2010. The carmaker said that in 2010, it sold 19,300 vehicles in 10 European countries. According to a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA), there is really a huge decline in the demand for diesel cars. As per IEA, diesel cars hold a large chunk of the automotive market in Europe, accounting for 42.5 percent of all sales as of start of 2017. But a year after at the start of 2018, the market share of diesel cars in Europe had shrunk to 36.5 percent. The diesel exodus in Europe continues. Years ago, carmakers have been in a sweeping race to offer more diesel-powered vehicles in the continent, which hunger for such transports seems unending. But now, it looks like carmakers – including Japanese company Suzuki and Mitsubishi Motors -- are also in a race, but this time, it is to exit from the shrinking market in Europe before it becomes too late.
Yes, Suzuki and Mitsubishi Motors are the latest of the carmakers that are saying goodbye to their diesel-powered offerings in Europe, in light of the growing dislike for such engine technology in the region. They will be joining fellow Japanese carmaker Nissan and Toyota in getting rid of diesel vehicles from their European lineup.
Interestingly, Mitsubishi Motors’ decision isn't really surprising as 34 percent of the carmaker is owned by Nissan and the company is also a part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. Mitsubishi has already halted sales of new diesel car in the United Kingdom. It has also stopped sales of diesel-powered cars in Germany. The only diesel vehicles that would remain in Mitsubishi’s lineup are its pickups, but that would only be for the short term. Ford is giving potential Fiesta customers more reasons to purchase its world-renowned subcompact. Two of these are the introductions of new sporty model based from the ST-Line trim of the Ford Fiesta. New customers can now indulge with the new Ford Fiesta ST-Line Red Edition and the Fiesta ST-Line Black Edition. Ford is now selling the Ford Fiesta ST-Line Red Edition and Fiesta ST-Line Black Edition models in selected markets in Europe.
According to the carmaker, the ST-Line trim accounts for around 20 percent of total Fiesta sales this year. Perhaps the satisfying demand for the ST-Line – which endows the Fiesta a sportier and more dynamic appearance – has led Ford to create two new special editions based on this trim. These new editions – the new Ford Fiesta ST-Line Red Edition and the Fiesta ST-Line Black Edition feature distinctive exterior and interior elements that make them stand out from the rest.
Making full use of Ford Performance-inspired styling, these new Ford Fiesta ST-Line edition models are available in three- and five-door body styles. Toyota sports car fans and enthusiasts are getting excited about the possibility that the Japanese carmaker would be releasing a new Toyota GR 86 and a new Toyota Yaris GR 86. This comes after Toyota filed an application to trademark the GR 86 and GR Yaris with the European Trademark and Design Network.
The trademark filing for the GR 86 and the GR Yaris names was made with the Swiss trademark office on September 18, 2018. However, the European Trademark and Design Network hasn’t approved Toyota’s registration application as of this writing.
It was a year ago when Toyota made public its plans to its new "GR" sports car series. GR stands for Gazoo Racing that the Japanese carmaker is positioning as its performance brand. Gazoo Racing is a company within Toyota that is in charge of refining its cars while training its staff via world-renowned motor sports activities like the 24 Hours of Nürburgring and the All-Japan Rally Championship. Hyundai Motor continues to make its i30 range more appealing by offering a new diesel engine that is compliant with Euro 6d Temp emission standards. For the 2019 model year, all of Hyundai’s refined i30 models are compliant with new emission standards while boasting of minor tweaks in design and latest connectivity elements.
The 2019 Hyundai i30 range – which include the i30 five-door, i30 Wagon, i30 Fastback and i30 N -- is now available with the newly developed Smartstream 1.6-liter four-cylinder diesel engine that is available in three power outputs: 96 PS (70 kW), 116 PS (85 kW) and 136 PS (100 kW).

Earlier this week, we talked about Volkswagen’s plans to halt the production of the US spec Passat for a few weeks during spring. And now, we just learned new things about its European counterpart. The Wolfsburg based manufacturer said that the Euro spec Passat will be out in the market very soon, though they did not give a particular date.
Dr. Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Volkswagen brand, said in his speech at the annual Volkswagen Media Conference, that the Passat is almost ready to arrive in dealerships across the Old Continent. But he stops there and does not give any other details. However, he did mention that the Passat will be available as Variant and hybrid models.
Unlike the US spec Passat, the European variant of the model sits on an MQB platform. The eighth generation of the D segment vehicle was launched way back in 2014, as a premium car that is still affordable to most. As of today, Jeep’s smallest SUV would be the Renegade, measuring just over 13 feet (396 centimeters) long, and 5 feet (152 cm) tall. To compare that with its largest range topping model, the Grand Cherokee has impressive dimensions of 16 feet (487 cm) long and almost 6 feet (182 cm) tall - that depends on the trim level still. Now, the American automaker believes that they could go another size down from the Renegade, as they plan to introduce a new SUV to be built in Europe.
In an interview between Automotive News and Mike Manley, the automaker’s CEO, he mentioned that the company is looking into an SUV that will be sized smaller than the Renegade, which he refers to as the “baby” Jeep. If this model pushes through as planned, it will be built in Europe, and will be sold in markets outside of the United States. Too bad, the Americans won’t get a mini Jeep.
If everything goes as planned, the baby Jeep will be built where the Fiat Panda minicar is being built, at FCA’s factory in Pomigliano, near Naples in Italy. Jeep is obviously busy and has been seen all over the globe, from revealing the Grand Commander in China, preparing the Renegade for a facelift, and launching the refreshed Cherokee. But even with all these projects lined up, the automaker has not stopped from adding a new special edition version for its European market. We’re referring of course to the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee S that customers from several countries in Europe can already order.
What makes the range-topping edition of the Grand Cherokee stand out from the rest of its variants would be the fact that it sits on 20-inch wheels and it features blackened lower and upper grilles in the front bumper, tinted windows with black chrome surround, and dual exhausts with black chrome finish. When you enter its cabin, it seems to match the exterior with its blacked out details including the wood finishes and black instrument panel accent stitching. It also gets Anodized Gun Metal accents.
Customers have a wide array of choices when it comes to choosing an exterior colour for the Grand Cherokee S, with 10 different hues. Two months ago, there were reports about Tesla Semi sales as it skyrocketed just a few weeks after being launched in the United States. Huge companies like J.B. Hunt, Walmart, Loblaws and Meijer had placed their reservations on the all-electric truck, as well as some other international companies. Also, the largest reservation that has been made was for 125 units (by none other than UPS).
Furthermore, Tesla received a total of around 140 pre-orders from the companies that ordered from them. And now, that number has probably doubled or tripled. The electric car maker promises to begin deliveries for the first batch of orders starting in late 2019.

General Motors has long faced issues in the European market. After years of experiencing losses, as well as weakening sales, the brand earlier this year sold off not only its Vauxhall brand but even the Opel brand. Opel is the main brand name that GM uses in Europe with the exception of the U.K. In the United Kingdom, Vauxhall, a British subsidiary of Opel, uses its very own brand name.
GM had disclosed that its European operations experienced a $257 million loss, the 16th year it had done so. GM would then sell the Opel and Vauxhall brands to the PSA Group in a deal valued at $2.3 billion.
For those familiar with the matter, the European operations of Chevrolet, known way back as Daewoo, was also halted in 2013. This was after the Chevrolet brand experienced losses amounting to $18 billion over several years. The phaseout was completed by the later part of 2015. After a somewhat successful fray into the automotive market in China, the resurrected German automobile brand Borgward is finally heading to Europe, bringing along with it the Borgward BX7 sports utility vehicle.
Borgward’s first stop is Germany, where it plans to start sales of its BX7 SUV in the first quarter of 2018. Commencing sales in Germany would signal its homecoming in Europe. The company was founded in 1929 by Carl Borgward. However, Borgward ceased to exist in 1961 when it was forced into liquidation by its creditors. In 2008, the company was revived by the founder’s grandson, Christian Borgward, with some investment from China. The carmaker unveiled its first car since 1961 – the BX7 and its sporty TS version – at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.
Since then, Borgward has concentrated its sales efforts in China. Now, the carmaker is fully intent into re-launching the brand in Europe, starting with Germany. As disclosed to Auto Express by Tom Anliker, Borgward’s Vice President for marketing, the Borgward BX7 is just the first step of the European re-launch, and it will be followed by its smaller sibling –a right-hand drive version of the BX-5 compact SUV. For those who are into pickup trucks, there’s good news as the new Renault Alaskan can now be yours as they expand to more countries in Europe. It had entered the South American market last year followed by its Colombian debut. The French automaker developed this model as an alternative to the Nissan Navara and the Mercedes-Benz X-Class, and it will be offering the one-ton pickup in Europe.
Under the hood of the Alaskan pickup is a 2.3-liter dCi diesel engine. Customers could either go for the base model with 160 horsepower (119 kilowatts) or the 190 horsepower (141 kilowatts) option. Both engines can be paired with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed automatic. It has a towing capacity of 2,205 pounds (1,000 kilograms) and can haul up to 1,630 pounds (739 kilograms). The pickup is available in three driving modes including a two-wheel drive, a 4LO, or a 4H full AWD.
The functionality and performance of the Renault Alaskan are at par with competitors like the Ford Ranges and the Toyota Hilux, which are both currently out in the European market. Japanese carmaker Nissan is now selling across Europe a new special version of its Nissan Pulsar compact family hatchback. More stylish, more elegant and more comfortable than the standard Pulsar, the new 2018 Nissan Pulsar Black Edition intends to remind everyone that the compact hatchback hasn’t given up in its goal to be recognized in its segment.
When Nissan introduced the Pulsar family hatchback three years ago in 2014, the Japanese carmaker had hoped this new challenger would take a good chunk of the compact hatch market. Volkswagen recently revealed their first ever compact crossover, namely the T-Roc. This model goes right below the Tiguan in the company’s lineup, as its smallest subcompact ever. This model is like a hybrid of an SUV and a compact hatchback, and what we know is that it will be sold in Europe before the year ends. The CUV will make its first public debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show.
When the T-Roc becomes available in Germany and the rest of Europe, customers will be able to choose from a number of engine options - for both gasoline and diesel. This includes a 1.0 liter, a 1.5 liter, and 2.0 liter TSI units, with 114 horsepower (85 kilowatts), 148 horsepower (110 kW), and 188 horsepower (140 kW), respectively. The first two can be had with six speed manual giving power to the front wheels, while a seven-speed dual clutch can be an option for the 1.5 liter unit. The 2.0, on the other hand can be paired with the dual-clutch box. For those who prefer driving a diesel, the T-Roc will be available in a 1.6 liter or a 2.0 liter TDI motor with the same output as the gasoline engines. For the T-Roc, entry-level models will be available in front-wheel drive, while larger engines can get an all-wheel drive option.
Initially, the company considered a plan to bring the model to the United States after the European release, but it seems like the company has changed their mind. Because now, reports say that the model will only be limited to Europe and China, and that piece of tidbit apparently came from VW insiders. This means that the United States will only be limited to the Tiguan if they want a compact model. But even with this statement, US fans should not lose hope at all, as there is still chance for a US-spec T-Roc, said Automobile Magazine. It is just a matter of when we will see one. You might recognize the car in this photo as a Camry but you’ll be wrong in a way. Let us clarify this. The plate does say “Altis” but the badge isn’t one of Toyota’s. Well, it’s basically the 2018 Toyota Camry that has been rebadged as the new Daihatsu Altis.
Daihatsu has been selling Camrys with the brand’s badge on it in Japan since the early 2000s. Today, the company is wholly owned by Toyota. Currently, only one model is carried in the lineup. And that’s the 2.5-liter hybrid with two-wheel drive in G spec, as seen in the photo.
In January 2016, it was confirmed that Daihatsu has become a fully-owned subsidiary of Toyota. Both parties have a share exchange that was completed in August 2016, and this is meant to add more value to both brands. The two companies have an agreement to develop better cars for the small car segment with next-generation technologies. The Blue Oval has been gearing its European light commercial vehicle lineup for an apparent upgrade in the previous months. Finally, the first to be released from the American automaker is the newly facelifted Tourneo Custom van. Having an interior that can accommodate up to nine passengers, the enhanced van has been given a new face, a completely improved interior and a bit of tech enhancements. The new van focuses more on the cabin features with the American automaker targeting the executive shuffle business.
With the van's exterior, the front part will now showcase a more prominent high-mounted radiator grille with a bigger company logo, sweptback headlights with fresh graphics and integrated LED daytime running lights, and a modified bumper with fresh fog lamps. The standard versions will be further fitted with base halogen lights, and the pricier models will be given Xenon illumination.
For the Tourneo Custom's interior, there are familiar features but nevertheless, it will also offer a new vibe.
