Ukrainian design student envisions a more modern take on the DeLorean DMC-12

Soon, around 300 new DeLorean DMC-12 sports cars will be seeing their new owners. They will be the exact copy of the DMC-12 sports car -- produced between 1981 and 1983 – that surged to its now iconic status thanks to its starring role in the “Back to the Future” franchise.

While the DeLorean Motor Company – a different company from the defunct carmaker of the same name – is busy preparing for the production of the DMC-12 sports car, Yevheniy Bratchyk -- a young design student from Kiev, Ukraine -- has published online his own vision of a modern DMC-12. This vision is dubbed as the DMC-21 and it features a number of similarities with the original DMC-12.

Let’s not forget that the new DMC-12s are actually replicas to be built by an unrelated company also named DeLorean. This company got sued by John DeLorean’s widow for illegally licensing their family name. However, the new Delorean company reached a settlement in 2015 to use the name, trademark and images in the future. Thanks to a Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act passed in 2015, the new DeLorean company could reproduce the DMC-12 in very low volumes in the United States.

Texas company starts taking pre-orders for DeLorean DMC-12 replicas

More than three decades ago, the DeLorean DMC-12 was produced by the DeLorean Motor Company. However, production was stopped due to issues within the company. The car itself was decent and very futuristic. It was a long shot for the American company to produce such a futuristic vehicle as it encountered so many financial difficulties for the production of that single model. It was the first and last that the company ever made.

A lot of people were mesmerized by the aesthetic design of the DMC-12. During that time, with 9,000 units produced before it stopped production in 1983. Due to the limited number of units, it is considered as one of the most coveted possessions for car collectors. As per 2007, only 6,500 out of the 9,000 were believed to exist.

For the past two decades, a company in Humble, Texas has been working on restoring and offering parts of the original DeLorean DMC-12. Although it bears the same name as the original makers, the current DeLorean Motor Company has no relation whatsoever with them. Recently, the company started to accept pre-orders through its website.

New DeLorean DMC-12 to get more powerful engine, new transmission

The DeLorean Motor Company, commonly called DMC, is an American automobile manufacturer that was founded by John DeLorean in 1975. However, the company finally hit rock bottom in 1982 when it filed for bankruptcy after the various issues and scandals surrounding the production of its first and last car – the DMC-12.

The company was unable to make ends meet; there was poor financial management and insufficient sales and ultimately, the last straw was when John DeLorean was accused of engaging in drug trafficking to keep the company afloat. As the saying goes, “all good things come to an end” but the DeLorean Motor Company ended too soon.

Luckily, a British business man by the name of Stephen Wynne bought all company rights and stock of the DeLorean Motor Company in 1990. He set up shop in Houston, Texas, where old DMC-12s up for repair and new units are expected to meet. The DMCs proved to be a great hit up to this day but now, the firm is having trouble keeping up with the demand for parts. As demand for new DMC-12s is increasing, its products and parts are also slowly dwindling and so DMC is currently searching for possible alternative parts.

Back to Future: Get in line as DeLorean will soon start DMC-12 production

The future is looking very bright for car manufacturer DeLorean Motor Company. The Humble, Texas-based company recently announced plans to start production of a souped-up version of the iconic DMC-12, a model recognizable to many film enthusiasts as the time-travelling car in the Back to the Future franchise.

The announcement was made after Congress passed a bill last December easing up the requirements for small-volume manufacturers of replica vehicles. The company said in a statement that for nearly five decades, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration did not distinguish between industry giants and small businesses that produce only a few custom cars in a year, subjecting all to the same requirements that are deemed restrictive to the small time players.

The landscape is all going to change now with the introduction of the Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act, H.H. 2675. The original DeLorean Company based in Ireland built 9,000 DeLorean DMC-12 cars between 1981 and 1983 before it filed for bankruptcy. Later in 1997, a Texas-based group acquired the original Belfast factory along with leftover parts and made a business of refurbishing the original DeLoreans.

BMW M GmbH is getting things all hyped up leading to the impending launch of its BMW X3 M sports activity vehicle and the BMW X4 M sports activity coupe. In an effort to make things more excited and make prospective customers think more about the new X3 M and X4 M, BMW has decided to let the public view their respective prototypes as they tackled the Nurburgring.

BMW’s high performance unit calls the event as the first official presentation of the new BMW X3 M and the BMW X4 M. However, the event can’t be called an official unveiling, the as both M versions of the X3 and X4 were both heavily camouflaged, and BMW M didn’t really provide more details – especially their actual specs – about these new high performance models. Indeed, a presentation is really the most appropriate word to describe the event.

The official presentation of the new BMW X3 M and BMW X4 M, which series development has already been kicked off, took place during the DTM racing weekend at the Nrburgring (September 7 to 9, 2018). During the official presentation, BMW M had prototypes of the BMW X3 M and the BMW X4 M test driven on the circuit. The prototypes have been camouflaged to indicate their nature as pre-series vehicles, which means that nothing is final yet with regards to the development of the X3 M and the X4 M. Their performances are still being tuned, and their first public appearance is just a showcase of what to expect from these two new M vehicles.

October 2019 is an important month for Nissan. It marks the 50th anniversary of the legendary 240Z, which is the original Z model from the Japanese carmaker. As part of the celebrations, Nissan is planning to unveil a new Z car – in prototype form -- at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, which coincides with the 50th year of the very first Z model.

This was basically confirmed by Alfonso Albaisa, Nissan’s Senior Vice President for Global Design, during an interview with Whichcar.com.au. Before this confirmation, there had been rumors that Nissan is planning a replacement for the 370Z, which has been in production since nearly 10 years ago. This decade-old two-seater rear-wheel-drive coupe is considered as one of the oldest sports car available in the market. A replacement would hardly surprise anyone, but back then, Nissan had yet to confirm anything.

During an interview with Whichcar.com.au, Albaisa remarked that is a huge pressure in creating a new Z car, adding that he is completely excited that he is in the position to work on the newest Z model. His statement essentially confirmed the rumors and the possibility of a new Z car. This also confirmed that no less than Nissan’s Senior Vice President for Global Design is involved in the project. Nonetheless, many are thrilled that the 370Z won't be continued as another version – instead a new Z car is really on the way. Expect a new Z prototype at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show.

Mercedes-AMG only came out with the E43 lineup a few years ago, and already, the said model is ready to retire the badge so they could give way for the arrival of the electrified E53 family. Without a surprise, the car’s design comes from the Ferrari Design Center and reflects the vision of the customer, an enthusiast who has a real passion for racing. The result? A gorgeous supercar that expresses all the beauty and innovation inherent in Ferrari’s road cars - the car is equally as good on the road and on the track. As for the design, it gets most of its inspiration from the iconic F40, from which the three layer metallic red paint also draws impulse. This paint job marks a radical departure from the language aesthetic of the donor car. It also has a twin turbo, twin intercooler set-up.

When you give the front end a closer look, you will notice that it has a pair of unusual headlights, which were especially designed for the SP38. The mandatory daytime running lights have also been moved to the front bumper to allow for an extremely thin headlights form. As a result, this adds more character to the car.

And today, we still have not seen the actual vehicle in production version, but at least there are spy shots of the roadster depicting a camouflaged prototype. It definitely is no ordinary test vehicle as we are looking at the Z4 M40i, which will be the crown jewel of the range taking into account a full fat Z4 M will not see the light of production day.

As usual, the automaker isn’t giving us that much information about the car, but what we do know is that the range topper is going to be given a newly developed inline six engine that they promise to be extremely powerful.

Aside from power, the M40i will feature a great deal of other goodies, including an M sports brake system, new front axle, a lower sports suspension with electronically controlled dampers, as well as a set of M lightweight alloy wheels shod in mixed tires. Subaru WRX and WRX STI fans will soon have a new special edition trim available when the 2019 model year debuts. These will be called Series.Gray and they will be available on both models. The special edition will come with a handful of appearance and performance parts inside and out, but this really isn’t considered to be new information. Sometime around the end of last month, Subaru announced the 2019 WRX and WRX STI and shared with us most of the details of the Series Gray models. What’s new for us would be some details and a number of photographs.

The Series Gray WRX was built off the WRX Premium trim that includes the Performance Package. New features include ultrasuede trimmed Recaro seats, eight-way power driver’s seat, JURID front brake pads, a moonroof delete, LED fog lights, keyless entry with push button start, and LED steering responsive headlights. The special edition will only be available with a six speed manual transmission. The WRX Series Gray comes with a price tag of $32,595.

If you are the type of person who would not settle for something common or usual, or want a more unique WRX STI, then the Series Gray may be right for you. When looking at it from the exterior, the package gets a Cool Gray Khaki paint, exclusive Crystal Black Silica badging, foldable exterior mirror, and 19 inch alloy wheels finished in black. The Brembo brakes have a silver finish with a black STI logo. As you move into the interior, you will notice black Ultrasuede with carbon black leather bolster and ultrasuede steering wheel with red stitching which are all standard. There’s Recaro seats with an eight way power driver’s seat come as standard. Of course, keyless entry with push button start is found in the WRX STI as well.

Aston Martin’s newest DB11 AMR, which sits at the top of the grand tourer range, is a marriage between high-speed capability with luxurious surrounds. It is equipped with a 5.2 liter V12 that packs an impressive 630 horsepower, which is a 30 horsepower boost over the standard DB11 V12 that the AMR replaces. Still, torque remains at 516 pound feet (700 Newton metres).

With that additional horsepower, the grand tourer can hit 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in 3.7 seconds. That makes it 0.2 second quicker than before, while its top speed is up to 208 miles per hour (335 kilometers per hour), now 8 miles per hour (13 kilometers per hour) faster than the regular DB11 V12. The AMR also features an exhaust that’s a bit louder than before, which is pretty obvious.

Of course, the company boasts that the DB11 AMR is more engaging to drive too. Aside from the added tweaks, the development team revises the shift calibration for the eight speed automatic and tweaks the suspension setup for sharper handling.

Sometime last month, BMW made an announcement that they will retire the standard M2 to make room for the M2 Competition. And now, the Bavarians are already showing off some new upgrades for interested customers, in which the performance coupe can be made even more intense. The new M Performance Parts will not only make your car look more appealing, but also serve to cut down some of its weight.

For instance, they are offering a new set of 19 inch forged wheels from the M Performance catalog, and this will not only make your car look sexy, but will also reduce their weight by 3.2 kilograms (7 pounds) when being compared to the regular alloy wheels.

BMW says that shaving off weight will have a positive impact on the steering wheel behaviour as well as the driving dynamics. The wheels can then be finished in two options: Jet Black in matte or Frozen Gold. This, of course comes with the “M Performance” lettering too. The wheels will then be dressed in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires for superior grip.

While info about the BMW M2 Competition has leaked out previously, it’s only now that full and official details have come out. As expected, it has a lot more cool features as well as power gains compared to the M2 coupe.

A two-door version of the Alfa Romeo Giulia has been making a lot of noise around the web for quite some time now. And now, new reports from Autocar have been going around that a coupe variant of the Giulia is actually in the process of development, though there haven’t been spy shots to prove this. Apparently, rumours come from an inside source close to Alfa Romeo, and the model’s official release is supposedly scheduled late this year before it hits the market in 2019.

The Giulia Coupe is said to carry the “Sprint” or “GTV” badge, and is meant to be a more powerful version of the Giulia Quadrifoglio sedan. It will inherit some of the body panels at the front half, except with a different nose to separate it from its four door sibling.

Needless to say, a more sloped roofline suitable for a coupe is being worked on, together with longer doors and a refreshed rear. According to our source, the Giulia Coupe’s rear end will have a trunk like the BMW 4 Series, Mercedes C Class, and Audi A5 coupes. But further rumours suggest that there might also be a five-door version that the automaker is looking into, to go after the 4 Series Gran Coupe and the A5 Sportback.

Earlier this year, we learned that the Competition Package for the BMW M5 (F90) will be arriving this year with production set to begin in April. Now, March is coming to an end, and it is just time for us to hear more details about the specifics of what the package have to offer, thanks to an Australian Bimmerpost forum user who ordered a BMW M5 with Competition Package. Everything that we expect from the package will be offered by the German automaker.

The user confirmed some details we already knew, from how output increases to 625 horsepower from the same biturbo 4.4 liter V8. Torque remains unconfirmed, while horsepower eclipses that of the M5’s rival - the 603 horsepower Mercedes AMG E63 S.

Surprisingly, there had been some details they revealed that we did not know about the package at first. For instance, the Competition Package will have a lowered suspension, and the front end will be dropped by seven millimeters, and ten millimeters for the rear. There should be other suspension changes as well, that make the M5 easier to handle on track. This however, was not confirmed on the post.

After Opel’s launch of the Insignia GSi last year in a liftback and a wagon body styles, Opel is ready to add the “GSi” badge on the Corsa. This will probably be the last variant for the current generation of the supermini, and the hot hatch version will have a three door body style to make it stand out from the lesser models of the range. Standard features that it will get include larger air vents, a honeycomb front grille, red brake calipers, a chrome exhaust tip, and a new set of 18 inch wheels.

The Opel Corsa GSi’s main highlight will be the Sport chassis that it borrowed from the hardcore OPC version that makes the hatchback feel more nimble around the corners. It had also been equipped with a beefier roof mounted spoiler that will boast the model’s visual appearance, while also generating extra downforce to keep the car close to the road when it is going fast.

At this moment, the automaker has not shared photos of the car’s interior cabin, but we do know that customers will be given the possibility to upgrade to Recaro seats if they are willing to spend a little more. There is also a leather wrapped sports steering wheel, as well as the leather wrapped sporty gearshift knob. An aluminum sport pedal set finishes off the upgrades in the Corsa OPC’s cabin.
