Gen-5 Dodge Viper sets new world record with 9.28 seconds for 1/4 mile run [w/video]

On July 21, 2017, this twin-turbo manual Gen 5 SRT Viper set a new world record by running a fourth of a mile in just 9.28 seconds.

But before this, it was also the Gen 5 Viper that held the record for the fastest 6-speed manual transmission in just 9.35 seconds at 157 miles per hour (252 kilometers per hour). When it went through the Carolina Dragway, this race focused model was able to cover the distance in just three passes, and it took only 2.28 seconds at 162 miles per hour (260 kilometers per hour).

Big thanks to the tuner for the twin-turbo forged V10 setup that made it possible to beat the record. This, along with the OEM wheels with Nitto 19” drag radials of course. This setup enabled the car to carry out 1,061 RWHP and 1,000 RWTQ.

Penzoil releases short film as Dodge Viper tribute

With the Dodge Viper set to be officially discontinued by this year, tributes are being made left and right. One of those in the top of such tributes would have to be that of Penzoil.

Titled as “The Last Viper,” the whole video is just a little under 3 minutes. It starts with the Viper inside a warehouse and an unnamed figure on the roof trying to recover the vehicle. Once he gets out of the warehouse, what follows next is a treat for any Viper enthusiast. Viewers are shown the limits of what this model can do. Making this possible is Penzoil getting stunt driver Rhys Millen to get behind the wheel of the yellow Viper ACR. The entire video was shot on location in Miami giving it some hints of Miami Vice and maybe a bit of Fast and the Furious vibe.

For some fans though, while the short film is indeed exciting, there are some moments that look awkward. At a certain period in the video for example, it is revealed that the license plate of this viper is V8 EATR. While it is possible that this V10 Viper could give some of the V8 versions a run for their money, the tribute was aired in conjunction with the reveal of the V8 Challenger Demon. The problem is that this latest model is considered to be the most powerful production version of the V8. In fact, it can likely beat the V8 “eater.”

2013 SRT Viper revives the American sports car spirit

Gentlemen and gentlemen, this is the 2013 SRT Viper, the new interpretation of the Dodge Viper spirit. For those who don’t know, this is the fifth generation of the iconic American sports car and according to Chrysler it will be hand-built in Detroit by the Street and Racing Technology (SRT) brand team. Two new models will be built at the Conner Avenue Assembly plant, the SRT Viper and the SRT Viper GTS.

The rear suspension was also re-engineered with the toe link moved forward of the axle for better tow control and dynamic stability. A new, driver selectable two-mode suspension system, featuring Bilstein DampTronic Select shock absorbers with both street and track settings, is standard on GTS models. The 2013 SRT Viper models are fitted as standard with the high-performance Pirelli P Zero tires. An optional SRT Track Package that features Pirelli P Zero Corsa, “soft”-tuned, "racing-type" compound tires is available. Stopping power comes from four-piston Brembo brakes with fixed-aluminum calipers, and vented rotors with a diameter of 355 mm by 32 mm, which are used at all four corners.

The available SRT Track Package features lightweight and slotted two-piece rotors from StopTech. The interior features a completely nee design and for the first time, all the major surfaces are sewn and wrapped with additional padding applied in comfort areas. Sabelt developed the high-performance racing seats and according to Chrysler they feature a lightweight Kevlar/fiberglass shell created by a state-of-the-art resin transfer molding technology for mass reduction and long-term durability.

As you may know already, Chrysler is working hard on the new Dodge Viper and as usual reports regarding the new car are starting to appear on the web. The last one is that the 2013 Dodge Viper will receive an immense 8.7-liter V10 engine (around 531 cubic inches), the largest engine ever used by Chrysler in a production car.

The engine used by the current Dodge Viper uses an 8.4-liter (510 cubic inches) V10 delivering 600 (450 kW) horsepower and 560 lb.-ft. (760 N•m) of torque.

With these numbers, the Viper hits 60 mph (96 km/h) in less than 4 seconds and has a top speed of 202 mph or 325 km/h. The power is transferred to the rear wheels via the heavy-duty six-speed manual transmission, through a ZF Sachs twin-disc clutch that reduces rotating inertia by 18 percent.

Dodge wants its next-generation Viper to attract a broader range of buyers. To accomplish this, Dodge had been working on its styling and engineering with owners of Porsche and other similar brands. Dodge wanted to know their preferences and to see what they think about the features in the Viper and in their own sports car.

In an interview at the New York auto show, Ralph Gilles, head of design at Chrysler Group and president of the Dodge brand,

said that the brand seeks to have greater understanding of this community since the company doesn’t normally deal with this type of customer unless it’s with regards to the Viper. Production of the Viper ended in July 2010. Last year, Dodge sold 392 Vipers. In 2009, it sold 482 Vipers and in 2008, it sold 1,172.

The new Dodge Viper sports car, which is meant to rival Porsche SE's cars and General Motors Co.'s Corvette, is “drop-dead beautiful,” according to Chrysler Group LLC.

“A naked woman on the beach” is said to be the inspiration of the new Viper’s appearance. Ralph Gilles, the head of Chrysler's design, told reporters at the Automotive News World Congress that the car will be released next year as a 2013 model-year vehicle.

Gilles, who also serves as head of the Dodge brand, said that Chrysler, which is managed by Italy's Fiat SpA, seeks to attract buyers from Porsches and the Chevrolet Corvette.

The next generation of Dodge’s Viper that’s due in 2012 will use Fiat technology to improve its performance and accessibility, says Autocar. However, it will retain its platform and will not be closely linked to Ferrari’s and Alfa Romeo’s product lines.

Fiat, which is the new owner of Dodge, has given its approval to the new Viper last autumn. And last September, Fiat Group chief Sergio Marchionne revealed a preview of the car to Dodge dealers.

It’s expected that this new model will be equipped with many Fiat parts. Several sources even say that it might be based on the same platform as Alfa Romeo’s 8C Competizione.

A source revealed that the 2012 Dodge Viper concept looks a lot like the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione with a Viper face. A limited-edition supercar, the Competizione had been on sale in select Maserati dealerships in North America.

What happened in 2009 was that Alfa Romeo put 84 coupes and 35 Spiders on sale in the US in seven Maserati dealerships.

However, consumers snatched up the opportunity and bought all the vehicles before they were even delivered.

Dodge Viper was seen to roll off the assembly line last Thursday in Detroit. The buyer of the final unit, which boasts of having custom bronzed gold paint, was made according to the preferences of D'Ann Rauh, who owns over 40 Vipers with her husband. This couple is famous for owning the biggest personal collection of Vipers in the world.

The last Viper received a custom leather interior and dark graphite, five-spoke forged aluminum wheels. Viper race tracks were also airbrushed into the custom-painted copper stripes. The Viper -- a Dodge supercar -- was launched in 1992 and was a pet-project of then Chrysler executive Bob Lutz.

For two decades, the Viper has been a favored model of both racers and car enthusiasts. This year, Dodge also ended production of several specials models such as the Voodoo and ACR-X.

Ferrari and its beloved V8 engine have a lot of history together. This is the same engine that powers the Ferrari 488 GTB (Gran Turismo Berlinetta). Now, Ferrari has unveiled at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show a new two-seater berlinetta that pays homage to its most powerful V8 mill so far – the new Ferrari F8 Tributo.

As it names clearly indicates, the Ferrari F8 Tributo is a tribute to its award-winning V8 engine. For three years in a row – 2016, 2017 and 2018 – Ferrari’s 3,902-cc V8 engine grabbed the “Best Engine” accolade in the International Engine of the Year awards. It was also named as the best engine of the last two decades in 2018.

In the Ferrari 488 GTB, which was unveiled four years ago at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, this 3,902 cc V8 turbocharged engine delivers an astonishing 670 cv of max output at 8,000 rpm and 760 Nm of peak torque in the seventh gear. This amount of power is sent to the rear wheels via a revised seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox derived from 458 Italia. This allows the 488 GTB to sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.0 seconds, to 200 km/h (124 mph) in 8.3 seconds, and achieve a top speed of 330 km/h or 205 mph.

German carmaker Volkswagen is now making the latest evolution of the new Volkswagen Golf GTI -- the new Golf GTI TCR. First unveiled as a concept at the annual GTI meeting in Worthersee, Austria, the new Golf GTI TCR is touted to be the most hardcore, most powerful and the fastest Golf GTI ever. Interested customers in Germany can now order the new Golf GTI TCR at a starting price of EUR38,950 (around $44,356) including VAT.

The new Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR is basically the street going version of the same-named racing car that won the international TCR racing series two times. It is powered by a version of the carmaker’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is tuned to deliver up to 286 hp (213 kW) of max output. Power is sent to the wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission – the only option -- with a limited-slip front differential.

With this amount of power, the new Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR is capable of sprinting from nil to 62 miles per hour (100 km/h) in just 5.6 seconds, on its way to a limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). However, when a customer avails of a certain option (Vmax), the Golf GTI TCR can go as fast as 162 mph (260 km/h).

After VIN registrations revealed months ago that Porsche was planning a new 718 Cayman T, new details have surfaced that about the hardcore model. According to a report by Auto Express, the German sports carmaker has almost completed the new lightweight Porsche 718 Cayman T and is now putting the finishing touches on this new hardcore model.

As reported by Auto Express, the new Porsche 718 Cayman T will served as a follow-up to the recently released 911 T as its smaller sibling. The new 718 Cayman T will be much lighter than the 718 Cayman, as made possible by employing a number of weight saving features like thinner glass, fabric door pulls and sports seats. In addition, the 718 Cayman T has seen its audio system removed from its cabin.

Overall, the 718 Cayman T would be around 20 kg lighter – in terms of kerbweight -- than the 718 Cayman. The VIN listings uncovered in July show that the 718 Cayman T will have a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 3,649 lbs(1,655 kg), which is lighter than a manual-transmission Cayman S (3,670 lbs or 1,665 kg).

More than a year after introducing the widely acclaimed ATS GT prototype at the at the luxurious Salon Privé exhibit, Automobili Turismo e Sport (ATS) has finally presented the final and production version of the supercar – the new ATS GT Launch Edition -- at the prestigious 2018 Monterey Car Week at The Quail.

The only hybrids that automotive customers can get now from Porsche are its Panamera four-door saloon and its Cayenne sports utility vehicle. While the German sports car maker has confirmed that it would build a hybrid version of the Porsche 911 sports car, that won't happen in the near term. For those who can’t wait for Porsche to offer a 911 hybrid, Vonnen Performance is offering to convert your sports car into one.

Porsche’s main reason for not offering a hybrid version of the 911 is that the German company still doesn’t believe that the current battery technology is on par with its expectations for its venerated sports car. But with the rapid pace that the battery technology is growing, that could happen in the next few years. Porsche chief executive Oliver Blume had said that a 911 hybrid may arrive on the mid-cycle refresh of the 992 generation, which should happen by around 2022 or so.

Because Porsche won't do a 911 hybrid now, Vonnen Performance is offering to do so for 911 models built between 2012 and 2016. This also applies for other Porsche offerings currently not having a hybrid version, like the Boxster and the Cayman. The conversion kit and the entire setup would cost a Porsche owner around $75,000.

The new Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2 are the first models in a new concept of limited-edition special series dubbed as ‘Icona,’ as inspired by the carmaker’s iconic and legendary cars. The Monza SP1 and SP2 essentially blend the evocative design of Ferrari cars in the 1950s and the most advanced technology found in modern sports cars. The 1948 Ferrari 166 MM, the Ferrari 750 Monza and 860 Monza were credited for creating Ferrari’s legend in the 1950s through unprecedented wins in the World Sports Car Championship.

In terms of looks, the Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2 are essentially twins. However, the Monza SP1 is single-seat road car that can only accommodate the driver on the right side. On the other hand, the Monza SP2 is a two-seater that allows the driver to bring along a front passenger to the ride. In the Monza SP2, the tonneau cover has been removed, while a second protective screen and a second roll-bar are added. The front passenger sits in a cockpit that replicates that of the driver, sans the steering wheel and a number of controls.

BMW M GmbH is getting things all hyped up leading to the impending launch of its BMW X3 M sports activity vehicle and the BMW X4 M sports activity coupe. In an effort to make things more excited and make prospective customers think more about the new X3 M and X4 M, BMW has decided to let the public view their respective prototypes as they tackled the Nurburgring.

BMW’s high performance unit calls the event as the first official presentation of the new BMW X3 M and the BMW X4 M. However, the event can’t be called an official unveiling, the as both M versions of the X3 and X4 were both heavily camouflaged, and BMW M didn’t really provide more details – especially their actual specs – about these new high performance models. Indeed, a presentation is really the most appropriate word to describe the event.

The official presentation of the new BMW X3 M and BMW X4 M, which series development has already been kicked off, took place during the DTM racing weekend at the Nrburgring (September 7 to 9, 2018). During the official presentation, BMW M had prototypes of the BMW X3 M and the BMW X4 M test driven on the circuit. The prototypes have been camouflaged to indicate their nature as pre-series vehicles, which means that nothing is final yet with regards to the development of the X3 M and the X4 M. Their performances are still being tuned, and their first public appearance is just a showcase of what to expect from these two new M vehicles.

October 2019 is an important month for Nissan. It marks the 50th anniversary of the legendary 240Z, which is the original Z model from the Japanese carmaker. As part of the celebrations, Nissan is planning to unveil a new Z car – in prototype form -- at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, which coincides with the 50th year of the very first Z model.

This was basically confirmed by Alfonso Albaisa, Nissan’s Senior Vice President for Global Design, during an interview with Whichcar.com.au. This decade-old two-seater rear-wheel-drive coupe is considered as one of the oldest sports car available in the market. A replacement would hardly surprise anyone, but back then, Nissan had yet to confirm anything.

During an interview with Whichcar.com.au, Albaisa remarked that is a huge pressure in creating a new Z car, adding that he is completely excited that he is in the position to work on the newest Z model. His statement essentially confirmed the rumors and the possibility of a new Z car. This also confirmed that no less than Nissan’s Senior Vice President for Global Design is involved in the project. Nonetheless, many are thrilled that the 370Z won't be continued as another version – instead a new Z car is really on the way. Expect a new Z prototype at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show.
