The distance a vehicle can travel with a full tank of gas or a single full charge is important to any driver. This is why most carmakers reveal the range of their vehicle offerings. With the first example of the I-Pace already delivered to its retail customer, Jaguar has released its MPGe estimates for its electric SUV. Sad to say, but the Jaguar I-Pace doesn’t measure to its EV competitors in terms of electric range.
When Jaguar said that the new I-Pace electric SUV would be getting a large battery as its core, expectations were high for its electric range – until it release its estimated MPGe figures. MPGe stands for miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe), as how the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) converts the power consumed by an EV into a term that is familiar to most Americans. MGPe is essentially how far an electric car can travel on the amount of energy that is equivalent to one gallon of gasoline.
According to Jaguar, the new I-Pace returns 80 MPGe city, 72 MPGe highway and 76 MPGe combined. This means that the Jaguar I-Pace can travel up to 234 miles in all-electric range in a single charge from its 90-kWh battery. It is quite common to see Mercedes-Benz taxis plying the streets of Germany. Mercedes-Benz E-Class taxi models can be found in almost every taxi stand throughout the country. In fact, three of every five taxis in Germany are Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Mercedes’ dominance in its home country isn't expected to be toppled soon, but Jaguar Land Rover of the United Kingdom is taking its chances with the new Jaguar I-Pace.
While 60 percent of all taxis in Germany being Mercedes E-Class, Jaguar is only sending 10 units of the I-Pace. Likewise, these 10 I-Pace units will only be fielded in the city of Munich, which is the home city of another German premium carmaker – BMW. The Jaguar I-Pace crossover taxis will be fielded in the city by Munich’s largest taxi operator.
In a statement, Jaguar Land Rover chief executive Ralf Speth said that the carmaker is inviting people in Munich not just to drive electric vehicles, but also drive Jaguar. He remarked that one of the reasons that Jaguar Land Rover deployed the I-Pace taxis in Munich is the mixed traffic. As Prince Harry and Meghan left Windsor Castle in London in a Jaguar Classic all electric E-type, which first made its appearance in 2017 at the Tech Fest event in London. Soon, production-based electric cars could now race against each other on the circuits against the background of the FIA Formula E Championship, which is considered as the pinnacle of electric vehicle motorsports in the world. However, this new all-electric series will only be exclusive to Jaguar’s I-PACE race cars, as launched by Jaguar Racing.
Dubbed as the Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY, this new all-electric race series is the first international championship in the world for production-based electric cars. As the support series for the Formula E Championship, the Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY series will be held on the same city circuits on the same weekend schedules. Just like the Formula E Championship, the Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY will be a 10-race series to be held in cities like Hong Kong, New York, Paris, Rome and Sao Paolo.
The first event of the Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY series will commence in late 2018, or at the start of season five of the Formula E. From 2020 onwards, Jaguar and Land Rover will offer an electrified version of each of the models in their range. So far, they have released two new concepts to kick off the switch they will be making in the future. Not only do the examples look fashionable, but they are also electrified. During the JLR Tech Festival, Jaguar came out with an all-electric E-Type together with an autonomous EV concept that informs us how the future will look by the year 2040.
It was JLR’s CEO Dr Ralf Speth who first announced their electrification plans, one of which is to introduce a portfolio of electrified products that include fully electric, plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid vehicles. The first electrified model that they will release will be the fully electric performance SUV, the Jaguar I-Pace, which should head to dealerships by next year. They are one of the newest companies to commit to a future of electric drive, after Volvo’s announcement earlier this summer.
One of the two models they introduced is the E-Type Zero Concept. According to the automaker, this model could make classic models future-proof by making them produce zero emissions. Nearly all details have been set with regards to the upcoming market introduction of the new Jaguar I-Pace. Its production version was recently previewed at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show. For one, production of the new Jaguar I-Pace has been left in the hands of a contract manufacturer in Austria. However, that does not mean that such a project would only be beneficial to the Austrian labor force. After all, the new Jaguar I-Pace all-electric SUV could still bring a lot of benefits to the workforce in the United Kingdom.
Jaguar Land Rover chief executive Ralf Speth recently revealed that contract manufacturer Magna Steyr is going to build the new Jaguar I-Pace electric SUV in Graz, Austria. This was after Jaguar Land Rover signed Magna Steyr in 2015 to build two of its future models. At the time, the Jaguar Land Rover had yet to disclose which vehicles would be built by Magna, but Speth’s recent words confirmed that the new Jaguar I-Pace would be one of the two vehicles to be built by Magna.
Generally, the name of the game for the Jaguar I-Pace in the UK is local infrastructure. Speth remarked during an industry event that Jaguar Land Rover might assemble some units of the Jaguar I-Pace in the West Midlands. Not only that, Jaguar Land Rover would like to double overall local production from 500,000 to a million cars annually by the end of the decade. However, all of these depend on the willingness of the government to invest in surrounding infrastructure to allow carmakers like Jaguar Land Rover to set up new production sites, especially for electric vehicles. The Financial Times reported that Speth pegged the government investment at around £450 million (about $561.7 million). Barely a week after Jaguar unveiled a production preview of its all-electric performance sports utility vehicle – the new Jaguar I-Pace Concept – at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, further details were revealed.
Jaguar Land Rover chief executive Ralf Speth told Automotive News Europe in an interview that contract manufacturer Magna Steyr will build the new Jaguar I-Pace electric SUV at its production facilities in Graz, Austria. It can be remembered that Jaguar Land Rover, in 2015, entered an agreement to contract Magna Steyr to build two of its future models.
At the time, the British carmaker had yet to reveal which vehicles would be built by Magna. However, it was widely expected that one of these future models would be the fifth-generation Land Rover Discovery and an electric vehicle. While Tesla remains to have a strong presence in the electric vehicles segment with its Model X variants, Jaguar revealed that it hopes the I-Pace crossover will serve as a true alternative to Tesla’s models. Set to be released to the U.S. market in 2017, the I-Pace Concept made its official debut at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show.
Having an electric motor not only on the front axle but on the rear axle as well, it has a combined output of 400 hp with peak torque of 700 Nm. Though truly impressive figures, it still may not have the acceleration being offered by the Model X P100D.

Jaguar is throwing its hat into the ring (also known as the highly competitive electric vehicle segment) as it unveiled its very own all-electric performance sports utility vehicle. Dubbed as the Jaguar I-PACE Concept, this is by far the brand’s most visually arresting concept yet. The reason is that the brand took advantage of the packaging freedom that electrification has to offer and this gave both the design team and the engineering team the chance to examine the overall proportions of this vehicle.
With this concept vehicle, Jaguar wanted to come up with a SUV that was not only sporty but one that is useable and offers a large amount of space. By having a cab-forward configuration, the brand was able to offer a SUV that is more spacious than models that use internal combustion. Since there is also a battery pack in the middle of the axles, the design ensured a long wheelbase at 2,990 mm (117.72 in.) with a footprint at 4,680 mm x 1,890 mm (184.25 in. x 74.41 in.).
In addition, since there was no need to include a transmission tunnel, the design team was able to use the space for a storage area in the center console at 8 liters (2.11 gal.). Further, with no standard gear shifter, the concept car now has space where one can put in keys, phones, and even other small things. Finally, despite having raked glass in the rear, the I-PACE Concept continues to be able to deliver space for luggage at 530 liters (18.71 cu. ft.). BMW’s European customers who are looking forward to have a new range extender version of the 2019 BMW i3 (BMW i3 REx) will have to bear a bad news from the German premium carmaker. They won't be able to get a new one as BMW will stop producing and offering the i3 REx in Europe starting 2019 model year.
It should be noted that BMW still listed the i3 REx in the 2019 model year specification, although its Web site aren’t offering any information about the ranger extender version anymore. This has led to confusion, with many still assuming that that REx version of the i3 would still be available for the upcoming model year. To an extent, there is some truth to this, since while the 2019 BMW i3 REx will be discontinued in Europe, it will still be offered in the United States.
At first glance, it may seem odd that BMW would discontinue the range extender version of the i3, after all the REx had accounted for 60 percent of the model’s sales, despite being around £,3150 more expensive than a standard i3, which is pure electric. However, the true appeal of the i3 REx isn't really the combination of electric motors and a range-extending two-cylinder 650-cc petrol engine to provide additional charge to the drive battery. The new Porsche Taycan is considered as revolutionary at the German sports car maker as the upcoming model is its first all-electric vehicle. Nonetheless, the new Taycan four-door EV will also be the starting point of a new revolution in the company. Porsche is currently building its conventionally powered vehicles, including its 911 sports car, using the traditional principle of an assembly line. Unveiled in April this year, the 2019 Jaguar XE 300 Sport special edition is out to prove that it is potent enough to set new records. It just did so after breaking the decades-old record at the original track of the Circuit de Charade in France.
Located in Saint-Genes-Champanelle, France, the modern Circuit de Charade is a technical circuit with a total distance of 3.975 km (2.470 mi) and a total of 18 turns. A challenging circuit for many drivers, the current circuit is not how it used to look around 30 years ago. After all, the modern Circuit de Charade just came into existence in 1989. It was built using the southern portion of the original Circuit de Charade.
The original Circuit de Charade is considered as an iconic circuit in France, having hosted the French Grand Prix four times (1965, 1969-1970, 1972) and the French motorcycle Grand Prix ten times (1959-1964, 1966-1967, 1972, 1974). Not a few motorists were enthralled when Volkswagen unveiled the ID Buzz Concept at the 2017 Detroit Motor Show. VW is putting the ID Buzz into production and make it available as early as 2022. Now, the German group, through Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, is now testing the waters for the possibility of offering a zero-emission transporter based on the ID Buzz.
The new ID Buzz Cargo is simply a progressive sibling for the ID Buzz. But instead of carrying people, the all-electric ID Buzz Cargo carries out the job as a commercial vehicle. VW unveiled and is currently displaying the ID Buzz Cargo concept at the 2018 IAA Commercial Vehicles in Hannover, Germany (September 20 to 27, 2018). Created as a supplementary model to the VW Transporter T6, the ID Buzz Cargo being presented in Hannover is already close to production, which may happen as early as 2021.
Just like the ID Buzz, the ID Buzz Cargo will be available in different battery sizes, according to the purpose and budget of the customer. Underpinned by the Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB), the ID Buzz Cargo can be installed with batteries that allow all-electric ranges of between 330 km and over 500 km (as per WLTP). Porsche has already officially announced that it is dropping its diesel-powered vehicles across its lineup while the German sports car maker re-focuses its energy towards electrification. But unofficially, it seems that Porsche is also planning to drop its petrol offerings in favor of an all-electric lineup, save for its 911 sports car.
Citing a person privy with Porsche, manager magazin reported that with the exception of the 911, all other models at Porsche – Boxster, Cayenne, Macan and Panamera – will become pure electric offerings. This means that non-911 models would be dropping not just their diesel engines, but also their petrol engines as well. That basically means no more internal combustion engines at Porsche, except for the 911. The 911 would be spared from being converted into a pure electric unit simply because it is a sports car for the purists.
Porsche conversion of its non-911 models into all-electric vehicles would mean that there would be no hybrid powerplant for these offerings. At the start of the year, Ford announced that it is planning to develop a new electric vehicle that focuses on performance. At the announcement, Ford said that the new performance EV would be named Mach 1. Eventually, the Mach 1 moniker was shelved, but not the performance EV. Now, Ford has released a new teaser that officially previews this upcoming EV.
During the January announcement, Ford said that this performance EV would released in 2020. In March this year, Ford Global Markets President Jim Farley remarked that the performance EV would be like a four-door SUV version of a Ford Mustang. Essentially, this means that the new performance EV would be an electric SUV with the looks or performance of the Mustang, or both.
Now, the recently released teaser image looks like a sketched silhouette of Ford’s new performance EV. It may seem so vague and unclear until a closer inspection reveals that it features the rear end of a Ford Mustang. That basically confirms the relationship of the new performance to Ford’s iconic pony car. Porsche managed to drop quite a powerful bomb at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show in March when it unveiled the Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo, a concept study of an electrically driven Cross Utility Vehicle (CUV). Being a concept, the path of the Mission E Cross Turismo into becoming a production electric CUV isn't fully assured. However, there is a reason expect its production version three years from now.
A report from Automobile Magazine, citing the supplier community, is saying that the Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo will be launched into the market in late 2021. If this is true, then this means that newly unveiled BEV sibling of the Porsche Taycan – formerly known as the Porsche Mission E – would be plying the roads as a more practical version of the Taycan around three years from now. Stefan Weckbach, head of Porsche’s global electrification efforts, has told Automobile Magazine during a test ride in one of the prototypes of the Porsche Mission E Crosss Turismo that the German sports car maker is working on the electric CUV concept with volume production in mind, although they have yet to receive an official go-ahead. He noted that with two motors -- one up front and another in the back -- an all-wheel drive system and an underfloor battery pack, the Mission E Crosss Turismo is also close to the final configuration.
