VW’s first EV – a hatchback -- will arrive by 2020, SUV and minibus will follow

The German automaker Volkswagen is now racing against time to come up with electric vehicles that will be able to pass Europe and China's stringent emission standard. The car company powerhouse set a timeline that by the year 2020, it should already have introduced the first line of I.D.-influenced electric cars to the worldwide market.

Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess reiterated to the analysts present at the Volkswagen headquarters that even though their future plan seems “very tight” in nature, the said electric cars must be unveiled to the public to adhere with their fleet targets and urgency is set to high to be able to achieve the launch dates without delay. The automaker intends to give the green light for the design of the first electric vehicle around August this year. This flagship EV is based solely on MEB electric platform- this platform will also be used with a whole array of electric vehicles.

For those readers who don't have a clue on what MEB is, it is the German acronym for the Modular Electric Model line-up. The first EV will bear the design of a Golf-Sized hatchback based on the I.D. concept revealed at the Paris auto show last year. Production of the first EV MEB will possibly commence at the last quarter of 2019 and will be classified as a 2020 model vehicle.

Ford Focus electric cars tested in Detroit provide valuable data for engineers

Ford’s "Living Electric" exhibit during the 2011 North American International Auto Show was not all about giving visitors the chance to drive and ride an electric vehicle. It was also an opportunity for engineers at Ford to know more about the Focus Electric. Ford global electrified products program manager Shawn Lightner shared that the event presented a win-win scenario for the brand. On the one hand, customers would know more about an electric vehicle like how it works.

The company could also get the data to learn more about the Focus Electric the customers were using, Lightner continued. The brand believed that this is the best time to discover how the new EV was performing by utilizing data acquisition technology already used on other development vehicles, added Lightner. The vehicle has an onboard data acquisition system which is then linked to the car computed.

This system is tasked with gathering important information on how the vehicle is doing while it was running or even when being charged. The engineering team at Ford can then simply go online to get the data through a website.

The decision on whether DaimlerAG's Smart subsidiary will expand its lineup by launching an electric motorcycle and an electric scooter will be made this summer, according to the unit's boss, Annette Winkler. The decline in Smart’s car sales is likely to be a factor on whether the business case would be deemed a positive one.

On the sidelines of the Detroit auto show, Winkler told Automotive News Europe that currently, the business case is looking positive. Talks are underway between Smart and potential production partners, but Winkler didn’t name the motorcycle makers that Smart is negotiating with. Smart revealed the concepts for the two-wheelers at the Paris auto show in October 2010.

For 2011, Smart predicts that sales will exceed 90,000 units, compared with 97,500 in 2010 and about 134,000 in 2008.
