2012 Opel Ampera gets five star rating at the Euro NCAP crash tests

It’s now Opel Ampera’s turn to undergo Euro NCAP’s tests, the same ones that the Mitsubishi i-MiEV and the Nissan LEAF were subjected to. This new EV has a balance of structure, interior and restraint system that’s well-optimized, enabling it to get the maximum points in the side pole test. Using the new rating scheme, the Ampera scored 85% in adult occupant protection, 86% safety assist, 78% in child occupant protection, and 41% in pedestrian protection.

The standard equipment for the model includes Electronic Stability Control and a seatbelt reminder system for the driver, front passenger and rear seats.

These tests indicated that in a frontal impact, the passenger cell that may hold adult occupants stayed stable. Also fitted as standard equipment on this car are the driver and passenger airbags. The tests with the dummies showed that the knees and femurs of both front seat occupants are well protected.

2011 Lexus CT 200h achieves five-star rating at the Euro NCAP crash testing

The latest Euro NCAP test results give the Lexus CT 200h the top marks when it comes to safety. In several fields, the Lexus hybrid topped its class, with a 94% protection rating for adults. It tied with the Volvo V60. The Lexus hatchback got high scores when it comes to the categories of child protection and safety assist but it tested poorly on pedestrian rating.

In the frontal impact, the passenger compartment remained stable and the knee airbags gave good protection to the knees and femurs of the driver and passenger.

In the side barrier impact, it scored maximum points as all body regions were protected well. In the side pole impact, its chest protection was marginal based on the rib deflections of its dummies. Also well-protected were the three-year dummy (with 11.9 points) and the 18-month dummy (with 11.2 points) out of a total of 12.

Toyota disputing EuroNCAP testing methods

Toyota has gotten accustomed to its cars getting a five-star safety rating from the Euro NCAP but very recently, its Urban Cruiser got a three-star rating. Toyota is now disputing the safety organization's test methods, in particular, on how the model scored just 58 percent for its Adult Occupant Protection capabilities.

Dr Michiel van Ratingen, Euro NCAP's secretary general, asserted that the result from Toyota is disappointing. He pointedly commented that consumers shouldn't presume that the car is invariably safe just because of its brand. A Toyota spokesman retorts that the carmaker submitted its Urban Cruiser to rigorous in-house tests, which all indicated that the vehicle would get a five-star rating.

The spokesman emphasized that Toyota prioritizes the safety of its cars. In 2009, all three of its new cars -- iQ, Avensis and Prius -- received a five-star rating from Euro NCAP.
