Mercedes-Benz GLC F-CELL PHEV makes use of battery and fuel cell for operations

German premium carmaker Mercedes-Benz has created a new plug-in hybrid vehicle that combines the power of two technologies –electricity (battery) and fuel cell (hydrogen). In short distances, it relies on pure electricity. When there is a need to travel over long distance, this plug-in hybrid relies on the power of fuel cell. This is the new Mercedes-Benz GLC F-CELL PHEV.

Using the Mercedes GLC as the base, this technological showcase isn't a futuristic vehicle, but is a real SUV that will be delivered to customers at the end of October 2018. It was originally envisioned as a plug-in hybrid, but now represents an important step by the German carmaker in the development of fuel cell technology.

As engineered, the Mercedes GLC F-CELL PHEV features four operating modes: Battery, Charge, F-Cell and Hybrid. All operating modes are supported by an energy recovery function that allows energy to be recovered during braking or coasting, then store it in the lithium-ion battery.

Inden Design restyles and upgrades the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

Before the Mercedes-AMG GT came to life, there was the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. But production for the latter only lasted for four years, and now, it is gone for good. There are some people who get attached to their cars, not wanting to sell them because owners consider them valuable, and this might be the case for Inden Design. The German tuner recently came out with a kit that will keep the SLS AMG fresh and running for several more years.

Inden Design says that the result after installing the kit will be the “world’s most advanced SLS AMG”. The SLS AMG gets a whole body makeover, and I mean all original Black Series parts will be dismantled as it goes through the process of upgrading. Everything from the apron to the hood, and even the side sills will be changed.

But the upgrades are not just about how it looks on the outside. The SLS AMG will be getting an upgraded interior and engine as well. The cabin originally comes with a factory carbon package. Underneath will be a new ice-blast treatment, combined with some original durable plastic laminated parts. Having said that, all the upgrades are not just for show, but have their functions too.

German chip tuner mcchip-dkr is offering an engine upgrade for the new Mercedes-Benz SLS 6.3 AMG Black Series, which recently came from production. The SLS 6.3 AMG Black Series is already an elegant monster of its own merit as it is powered by a 6.3-liter V-8 that provides 622 hp and 468 pound-feet of torque.

But this amount of dynamism may not be enough for some customers. It is a good thing that mcchip-dkr is offering an engine map optimization motor tuning for the Black Series dubbed as the Stage 1 kit. Once the tuning is completed, the SLS AMG Black Series’ power is hiked to 654hp of output and 479 pounds-feet of torque.

This surge in engine power and the addition of aero modifications has enabled the SLS AMG Black Series to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds and reach a top speed is 196 mph. The tuning did not only result to higher engine power, but also improve fuel consumption.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive completed a lap in the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit in just seven minutes and 56.234 seconds, allowing it to become the first electrified series production vehicle that has mastered the 20.832-km long Green Hell in under eight minutes – all in a record-setting fashion that has already been certified. The amazing feat of the Mercedes SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive in one of most difficult race courses in the world came just two weeks after the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 achieved its first overall victory in the 24 Hours Nurburgring.

Ola Kallenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, remarked that they were able to show the potential of the SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive by setting a new record on the Nurburgring Nordschleife. He noted that Mercedes-AMG is the first carmaker to have been able to create an electrically powered series production vehicle that could complete a lap in the Nordschleife in under eight minutes – a proof of the company’s constant “innovative vigor.“

Tobias Moers, Head of Overall Vehicle Development and member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, remarked that the new record set by the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive on the Nurburgring Nordscheife shows the special position of Mercedes-AMG’s groundbreaking drive solution. He remarked that the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive was able to generate a breathtaking sensation thanks to a number of factors like: its four electric motors located in close proximity to the wheels; its efficient battery technology derived from Formula One and the individual wheel torques “AMG Torque Dynamics.” Further factors include the SLS eSound and the "AMG Lightweight Performance" design strategy.

At the launch of the 2013 Festival of Speed, Mercedes-Benz put on display two exceptional, aluminium-bodied, rear wheel drive vehicles that were built 58 years apart. Displayed at the Goodwood Hill were the 300 SLR “Uhlenhaut” Coupé, which was produced in 1955 and driven by Jochen Mass, and the SLS AMG GT, its modern successor and the first example to make it to the UK.

On the surface, they’re highly similar. They’re both front-engined and use rear wheel drive and come with roof-hinged “gullwing” doors. But there are more similarities. Both use a lot of aluminium to cut the weight and boost the strength. Each vehicle uses a hand-built, eight-cylinder engine and was built by a comparably small, very skilled and dedicated team.

The “Uhlenhaut” Coupé is named after Rudolf Uhlenhaut, the famous engineer and formerly the head of vehicle development and creator of the 300 SLR. Built in 1955, the “Uhlenhaut” Coupé is based on highly successful racers, who are most known for the win at Mille Miglia victory of Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson.

Tuning house/coachbuilder Gullwing America wanted to emphasize the retro factor of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster by turning it into the 300 SLC convertible. This Eastern European gearhead is famous for recreating old Mercedes Gullwing models using new technology underneath. So far, its work on the Panamericana 300 SL is one of the most impressive.

This is a modern recreation of the gullwing with a tube chassis and custom aluminum bodywork, as well as a 3.5-liter Mercedes V-6 or 5.5-liter Mercedes V-8. GWA took it upon itself to transform the SLS AMG Roadster into a homage to the Mercedes-Benz 1955 300SC roadster. GWA is sticking with modern technology and has left certain SLS’ major features such as the pop-up rear spoiler and the 6.2-liter V-8 engine and dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The best features of this model include the LEDs. It kept the convertible bodystyle but it took out the power-operated softtop and put in a removable hardtop (signifying a nod to the original 300 SC).

Mercedes-AMG is introducing the new SLS AMG Coupé Black Series, the high-end super sports car version of the gull-wing model that takes inspiration from the SLS AMG GT3 racing version. The fifth Black Series model from Mercedes-AMG was designed in line with the "AMG Lightweight Performance" strategy and boasts “breath-taking design, outstanding driving dynamics and uncompromising lightweight construction.”

SLS AMG Black Series offers a power/weight ratio of 2.45 kg/hp and has a DIN kerb weight of 1550 kilograms. It is powered by the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine that delivers 631 hp at 7400 rpm, enabling the most dynamic gull-wing model of all time to accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 3.6 seconds.

This coupe is brought to a new level with highly emotional shift and response times from combining coil-over AMG RIDE CONTROL performance suspension, the AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system and the weight-optimised forged AMG light-alloy wheels with newly developed sports tires with the electronically controlled AMG rear-axle differential lock and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series, a powered-up version of the well-known gullwing coupe. Set to make its world debut this month at the 2012 LA Auto Show the new vehicle is the fifth in a series of limited production Black Series model. Just like any other Black Series model, the SLS AMG is distinguished by series of exterior styling changes in order to offer an aggressive design.

As you can see from the photos, carbon fiber was used on the more aggressive bodywork and we can find it on the front spoiler, bonnet and rear air diffuser. Moreover, the car is also available with an aerodynamic package as an option, which includes a fixed rear wing.

Furthermore, the rear bulkhead and centre tunnel are also made form carbon fiber. As a result, the SLS AMG Black Series has a total weight of 1550 kg, a 70 kg drop comparing it to the standard SLS AMG. Under the hood, we find the standard 6.2-liter V8 engine delivering 630 hp and 635 Nm of torque. For those who don’t know, the standard SLS AMG has “only” 571 hp.

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG will be getting several upgrades, one of which is the GT label. The flagship supercar, which will now be named the SLS AMG GT, will have its power boosted. The naturally-aspirated 6.2-liter V-8 engine delivers the same torque as the 2012 model with 479 lb-ft. But its horsepower is higher by 20 to 583hp.

Its maximum velocity remains at 197mph but its acceleration time from zero to 60mph is faster by a tenth of a second to 3.6 seconds. Mercedes revised the seven-speed automatic, with manual-mode shift times “significantly” shortened plus a double-declutching function that’s more prominent. A more aggressive spring/damper tuning was used to stiffen up the AMG Adaptive Performance suspension.

The appearances of the SLS AMG GT Coupe and Roadster have been enhanced with the use of darkened headlights and red brake callipers. It utilizes the same 10-spoke forged alloy wheels covered in 265/35R19 up front and 295/30R20 in back just like the prior model. The standard designo interior package is available in quilted leather with three new color combinations -- mocha brown/porcelain, grey/porcelain, and mystic red/porcelain.

Bernd Schneider, record DTM champion and AMG brand ambassador, has immersed himself personally into the project, and even had the privilege – along with an AMG engine fitter -- of installing the powerful AMG 6.3-liter V8 engine in the SLS AMG GT3 45th Anniversary, which is basically a race edition of Mercedes-AMG’s Gullwing.

This ultra-exclusive customer sport racer is a personalization of the brand’s triumphant AMG Customer Sports Program that has already earned 32 wins in the 2012 Motor Sports Season. The program has already won three driver and team titles in the FIA GT3 European Championship, the ADAC GT Masters and the FIA GT1 World Championship.

To distinguish the SLS AMG GT3 45th Anniversary edition from a typical SLS AMG GT3, AMG had implemented an array of exterior and interior modifications. For instance, AMG wrapped the body of the SLS AMG GT3 45th Anniversary in the new designo magno graphite matt paint finish. This exclusive paintwork was only available on the SL65 AMG 45th Anniversary, which was unfurled at the New York International Auto Show in April 2012 also to Mercedes-AMG’s commemorate AMG’s 45th birthday. Now, this paintwork has found its way on the special race version of the Gullwing, as complemented by AMG light-alloy wheels in designo magno graphite.

At this year’s Paris Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the new SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive, an emission-free super sports car featuring advanced technology such as four electric motors delivering a total of 740 hp (552 kW) and an impressive 1000 Nm of torque. The four electric motors weigh 180 kg, but the total ouput delivered by them is more than the standard rear-wheel-drive SLS AMG’s 6.2-liter V8 petrol engine.

With these numbers, the car can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h or 155 mph (petrol-powered SLS AMG sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and has a top speed of 317 km/h). Moreover, the car is equipped with two separate gearboxes that provide direct drive to each axle.

The AMG Torque Dynnamics system provides selective drive to individual wheels. The energy for the electric motors comes from a 60kWh lithium-ion battery pack, developed in co-operation between Mercedes-Benz’s AMG performance car division and High Performance Engines.

The new Formula 1 Safety Car is the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT, which replaces the regular SLS that had marshalled the events at the F1 race since 2010. There have been several AMG safety cars that had served as safety cars in the past years at this event. The GT is basically a modified version of the present SLS supercar.

It delivers 583bhp from its 6.2-litre V8 (up 20bhp) and comes with a retuned dual-clutch gearbox that offers better shift times. With these revisions, the SLS can accelerate from zero to 62mph by about a tenth of a second faster to just 3.7 seconds. It has a limited top speed of 197mph. Another feature that’s new to the SLS GT is AMG Ride Control.

This is the replacement for the three-mode system on the current car. It supposedly improves its dynamics with its aggressive suspension tuning. The automaker will be unveiling a production version of the SLS GT at the Paris motor show before it arrives this November at the UK showrooms. Mechanically, it is identical to the safety car.

Ok, we will admit that it is only a rumor… but some people say that Mercedes-Benz is preparing a diesel-powered SLS AMG, that will bow at the 2012 Paris Motor Show in September. According to the source, the SLS will carry a tri-turbo diesel. If we take a little time to think, this is not as crazy as it sounds, because Bmw and Audi already offer some impressive diesel engines in its cars.

For example, Audi has the 6.0-liter V12 diesel engine in the Q7 with 500 hp, while Bmw offers the 3.0-liter tri-turbo diesel in the X5 M50d, X6 M50d models and M550d models with 381 hp. Still, diesel engines are not new to AMG as the company built the C30 AMG CDI. Although we’d like to see it, the SLS AMG CDI may remain just a nice dream for the moment.

Diesel-powered or not, we would still choose the 6.3-liter V8 engine found on the standard version that delivers an impressive 571 hp (420 kW) and 650 Nm of torque. For those who don’t know, the standard model accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.8 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited at 317 km/h. Combined fuel consumption of the SLS AMG is 13.2 litres per 100 km. So, if you want this model, you’d better be prepared for writing a check of 177,310 euros.

Mercedes-Benz unveiled the SLS AMG GT, an updated version of its well-known supercar, which comes with more power, optimized AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission and a redeveloped AMG RIDE CONTROL Performance suspension. For those who don’t know, the standard version of the SLS AMG is powered by the same AMG 6.3-litre V8 front mid-engine delivering “only” 591 hp, which means that the SLS AMG GT gets an extra 20 hp while the maximum torque is 650 Nm at 4750 rpm.

As a result, the SLS AMG GT is with 0.1 quicker than the standard version as the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) is made in 3.7 seconds. The SLS AMG GT achieves 200 km/h (124 mph) in 11.2 seconds, while the top speed is limited to 320 km/h or 200 mph (standard version has a top speed of 317 km/h or 197 mph).

Moreover, the SLS AMG GT’s AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7 speed sports transmission offers newly developed gear change functions and optimised transmission control. The automatic double-declutching function when shifting down is also more pronounced in the SLS AMG GT.
