Renault Zoe e-Sport and Formula E racer lead EV parade in Paris

French multinational automobile manufacturer Renault has revealed its eDams team racer in preparation for the Formula E Paris ePrix along with the dashingly quick Zoe e-Sport Concept and a whole lot of production Zoe 40 units for retail purposes. Now we would like to wholly witness a race between the two high-powered electric vehicles.

Renault eDams team is a force to reckon with, as they’ve been leading the Formula E standings. The team celebrated the outstanding performance of its homestead by having a parade of their electric vehicles through the City of Light. Last Saturday in Paris, Sebastian Buemi earned his fifth win in six races of the current season of the Formula E. This means that he presently has a lead of 43 points in the electric racing series.

Leading the way of the procession are the Renault eDams R.S. 16 race car and the dapper Zoe e-Sport Concept in a video released by Renault. However, the drivers don’t follow a particular formation in the clip. But this doesn't mean that the Zoe e-Sport can't catch up with the R.S. 16. Renault confidently claimed that its conceptual hot hatch variant of the Zoe can leave you in the dust with its 62 miles per hour (100 km per hour) run, needing only 3.2 seconds to reach that coverage, and according to the French automaker, this performance can outrun the open wheel Formula E racer. That's a solid performance coming from a hatch.

Renault now accepts pre-orders for Zoe Star Wars Limited Edition

It’s Star Wars fever once again, and the second installation of the trilogy sequel -- “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” -- is finally hitting theaters. Avid fans of the franchise would love to know that a limited edition Renault Zoe will soon arrive with Star Wars special touches. In partnership with Star Wars, Renault is unleashing the force with the new 2018 Renault Zoe Star Wars Limited Edition electric vehicle.

Just like Anakin Skywalker and Ben Solo becoming Darth Vader and Kylo Ren, respectively, the best-selling EV in Europe has transformed into the Renault Zoe Star Wars special edition. Interestingly, the Zoe Star Wars isn't the first vehicle from the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance to use the force. Just last year, Nissan’s mid-size crossover merged into the world of the Jedi by becoming the Nissan Rogue: Rogue One Star Wars limited edition. That marked the first time that a carmaker officially partnered with the Star Wars franchise. The partnership now continues, but with Nissan’s alliance partner Renault.

To enter the world of the Jedi, the Renault Zoe Star Wars features an exterior covered with a number of decals related to the franchise. For instance, the bonnet, roof and boot of the Renault Zoe Star Wars sport decals starring Han Solo’s Millennium Falcon star ship. Specific Star Wars badging can be found on the front fenders just below the A-pillar, as well as on the door sills.

Renault Zoe E-Sport Concept has quicker acceleration than a Formula E car

A tweet from Renault has suddenly put the focus on its Zoe E-Sport Concept. Unveiled during the recently concluded 2017 Geneva Motor Show, the brand said that this concept car was able to go from 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100 km/h) in 3.2 seconds.

Just how fast is that? Consider the fact that the Formula E car can go from standstill to 60 mph is exactly 3 seconds. Though there is a fractional difference, it is safe to say that if the figures are true, the Zoe E-Sport Concept does have a quicker acceleration.

When first presented during the Geneva Auto Show, the Zoe E-Sport was a small sports car powered solely with electricity and features an all-wheel drive. The wide body is composed of carbon fiber and it is placed on top of the alloy 20-inch wheels. In order to help lower the weight, the rear seats were removed with carbon fiber being combined with Kevlar. Thus even if the battery pack does weigh 992 lbs. (450 kg), the whole vehicle comes in at 3,086 lbs. (1,400 kg).

X-Tomi’s Renault Zoe RS rendering turns out more realistic than the E-Sport Concept

After we drooled over Renault’s E-Sport Concept in Geneva for the last several days, X-Tomi Design has cooked up a better meal. We’re talking about the Zoe RS, a reimagined version of the Zoe embodying the RenaultSport division’s more extreme “personality” that is also more practical. That being said, it has more realistic features which we think are more “doable” in case Renault decides it wants to build a production version of the Zoe concept.

First of all, X-Tomi got rid of the Zoe E-Sport concept’s rear door, front fender and side air intake design. Instead, the rendering artist uses its own take on the bumper along with the new checkered themed-LED lights to complete the new look.

X-Tomi obviously got some inspiration from the Clio RS especially for the LED lights and its new set of alloy wheels. Nevertheless, we think the Zoe RS as a whole is much better than the E-Sport concept that graced the Geneva Motor Show. Now if only Renault would have the RS badge on the Zoe. We’re seriously pining for this.

This electric hatch could give conventional hot hatches on the market a good run for their money. In fact, it could even be the quickest hot hatch if it reaches production. French carmaker Renault is introducing the new Renault Zoe e-sport Concept, a show car that has taken too much electric steroids.

Unveiled at the ongoing 2017 Geneva Motor Show, new Renault Zoe E-Sport Concept is meant to highlight the French carmaker’s continued commitment to development of electric vehicles. The matter is that Renault has compressed its three years of overwhelming success in the FIA Formula E Championship – considered as the peak of electric car racing – into its Zoe supermini. From its electric powertrain to its lightweight body, the new Renault Zoe e-sport concept indeed is a personification of the carmaker’s Formula E technology.

The electric powertrain of the current Renault Zoe ZE with the 41 kWh battery pack is able to develop 66 kW (89 hp) of max output and 220 Nm (162 lb.-ft.) of instant torque – good enough to allow this mini hatch to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 13.5 seconds.

Renault has added 30km to the range of its battery powered Zoe subcompact hatchback, allowing the car to go 240km (149 miles) on a single charge. Renault was able to extend its range by using a lighter and more compact electric motor and an optimized electronic management system. Renault seeks to boost sales of the Zoe, which will start selling this spring in Europe.

It will be priced lower than the current Zoe, which has a starting price of 22,400 euros in France, excluding a government rebate that cuts the price to 16,100 euros. At the recently held Geneva auto show, Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said that the range of the Zoe as well as the Nissan Leaf will be gradually increased to 300km.

For now, the Leaf has a range of 199km. Ghosn said that the enhanced ranges will be achieved in increments of 30-40km and their introduction will be hastened. He also said that to ease the “range anxiety” of car buyers, there will have to be more charging stations available.

The Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team has unveiled the F1 W05 race car that it will field for this year’s Formula One season. Gracing the unveiling of the F1 W05 at the Circuito de Jerez in Spain are drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. The first Silver Arrow to hit the track since 1954 is designed from the ground up as an integrated project between the Mercedes-Benz teams at Brackley and Brixworth.

The new F1 W05 race car marks 120 years of Motorsport and the 80 years of the Silver Arrows. It also represents the fifth Formula One car that Mercedes had constructed since 2010. With significant changes in regulations taking effect this 2014 Formula One season, the F1 W05 has been designed to strictly comply with them. The initial engineering conversations, dating back to late 2010, between the Brackley and Brixworth teams center on both the regulations and potential solutions.

When the rules for the new V6 Hybrid Power Unit were officially published in mid-2011, Mercedes-Benz has been determined to maximize overall car performance. This resulted in the development of the new F1 W05 that is run by the PU106A Hybrid Power Unit. Both are designed to meet the challenge of a change in the philosophy of Formula One.

After McLaren unveiled its MP4-29 F1 car, Ferrari also presented the F14 T, its sixtieth car built specifically to take part in the Formula 1 World Championship. According to the official press release, the F14 T name comes from the combination of the current year and the introduction of the turbo-compressor in the Power Unit.

As expected, the F14 T is very different to the cars of recent years and changes include a lower chassis and nose in the interests of driver safety. The rear wing shares nothing to the previous year owing to three rule changes requiring a much larger stroke DRS, a much smaller overall rear wing depth and removal of the beam wing. The front wing is 75 mm narrower per side due to safety reasons, as it needs to be less vulnerable to collisions with other cars and with the barriers.

Ferrari says that the little change of 75 mm forced them to reinvent completely the front wing aerodynamics for 2014. Moreover, the new Ferrari F14 T has completely different cooling requirements from any of its predecessors. The engine oil and water radiators are now smaller due to the use of the 1.6-liter V6 engine, but new homes had to be found to accommodate an intercooler for the turbo-compressor system and to manage heat rejection from ERS components that are many times greater than their KERS antecedents.

The first F1 car for this year’s championship has been unveiled: ladies and gentlemen, this is the 2014 McLaren Mercedes MP4-29 Formula One car. Set to be driven by Jenson Button and his Danish teammate a.k.a. Kevin Magnussen, the 2014 McLaren Mercedes MP4-29 F1 car comes with a new nose stricter, a lower chassis around the driver’s legs and feet and it is powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged 90deg V6 engine with a sophisticated and extremely powerful energy recovery system (ERS).

The small V6 engine replaces the 2.4-liter naturally aspirated V8 that generated 750 hp. According to McLaren, the new turbo will spin at up to 125,000 rpm and this will be the first time turbo engines have been permitted in Formula 1 since they were banned at the end of 1988.

The engine will be bolted to an eight-speed transmission for 2014 as F1 cars need to be fuel-efficient too, due to the fact that for the first time, cars will be limited by a maximum fuel-flow rate during races – 100 kg/hour. Cars previously ran with a maximum load of 160 kg/h. The front wing of the car is now narrowed by 150 mm, creating a new issue for the aerodynamicists, who had to re-route important airflow around the front tyres.

Renault expects to sell just around 10,000 Zoe subcompact electric cars in 2013, 40,000 below its initial target, market analyst Inovev was cited by Automotive News Europe. Inovev said the 50,000 sales target for Zoe was provided by several high-ranking executives at Renault.

Early this year, the French carmaker said that the Renault-Nissan alliance would fail to meet its target of selling 1.5 million electric vehicles around the world by 2016. A spokeswoman for Renault said the alliance has yet to set any new sales targets yet.

Renault commenced selling the Zoe in Europe earlier this year, and sold only around 6,600 units globally in the first nine months of 2013.

Renault hopes that more people will get to like the Zoe subcompact electric car enough to buy it. Renault pointed out its extended driving range and low running costs as its highlights. The company believes that the Zoe hatchback will be its top seller among its lineup of electric vehicles that includes the Fluence Z.E. sedan, Kangoo Z.E. small van and the Twizy two-seater.

During the car’s launch, Bouvier, marketing director for Renault's zero emissions range, said that the Zoe is the first mass-market EV offered at a low price. Renault said that the Zoe's maintenance costs will be 20% lower than combustion engine cars since the EV doesn’t need oil changes and doesn’t come with other costs linked to combustion engine cars.

In addition, customers will save fuel costs since a full charge costs is priced below two euros in Europe for a 150-km driving range. In France, the Zoe has an entry-level price of 13,700 euros after a government rebate of 7,000 euros.

The Marussia MR02 was introduced at Jerez before the start of its 2013 F1 campaign. But even if the pre-season testing schedule has already begun, the team still doesn’t have a second driver. Max Chilton is left as the only team member for Marussia after lead driver Timo Glock was released for financial reasons.

There are rumors that fellow rookie Luiz Razia is in line to fill the vacant slot. However, no contract has been agreed yet. Marussia is highly confident about the MR02 as it is the first product of the new technical structure of this team. In the middle of the 2011 season, Marussia split with Wirth research and it took back its design in-house, with more reliance on wind tunnel development. It also brought former Benetton and Renault technical chief Pat Symonds as a consultant.

Caterham had beaten Marussia to 10th place in the 2012 F1 Constructors' championship. Caterham has recently presented its 2013 F1 car at Jerez. The CT03 will start pre-season testing today with a new team of drivers. Charles Pic has been transferred from Marussia while previous Caterham test pilot Giedo van der Garde was given a permanent drive.

The Infiniti Red Bull Racing team has unveiled the racing car it would use to defend its Formula One Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles for 2013 – the RB9. The launch of the new RB9 racing car marks a new era for the Infiniti Red Bull Racing team – as it confirmed the announcement made by Infiniti in November 2012 that it will become the Red Bull Racing’s title partner for four years.

At the unveiling, Infiniti also disclosed that it will become the team’s exclusive Vehicle Performance Partner. Infiniti has already deployed engineering personnel to the Red Bull Racing’s headquarters in Milton Keynes, underscoring the intensifying technical synergy between the team and the premium carmaker. Infiniti plans to integrate more team members into the Vehicle Performance department in Milton Keynes.

As for the RB9, the racing car boasts of a new livery that indicates the deepening relationship between Red Bull Racing and Infiniti – it integrates the carmaker’s purple-hued branding with the team’s existing racing colors. Gracing the media launch of the RB9 were triple World Formula One Champion Sebastian Vettel and nine-time grand prix-winner Mark Webber.

Ferrari has introduced the F138 – its Formula One car for the 2013 season. The F138 name is a combination of the year and its use of V8 engines, which would be used for the last time this year. Ferrari drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa were present at the launch. Joining them were team principal Stefano Domenicali and Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo.

The F138 looks to be a subtle evolution of the car last year. It’s a lot like the newly presented McLaren MP4-28 because of the minor regulation revisions from last season. Specifically, Ferrari has decided to remove the ‘duck bill’ stepped nosecone and had that replaced with a flush panel that’s sleeker. The F138 keeps the iconic blood-red livery of Ferrari.

The F138 gets a nearly two-tone effect due to the new black detailing towards the underside. Ferrari is relying on the F138 to get a title for the first time in four years. The last time that Ferrari won the constructors’ championship was in 2008. Kimi Raikkonen was behind the wheel when he won the drivers’ championship in 2007 for Ferrari.

The name of Ferrari’s 2013 car has finally been unveiled. The F138 was previously only referred to as the '664' -- its working project title. Ferrari’s car last year was aptly named F2012 but it was speculated that the successor won’t be named F2013. That’s because Fernando Alonso wasn’t able to win the title with the conventionally numbered '12'.

There’s also still the unlucky number stigma attached to the number 13. Last Wednesday, Ferrari released an explanation for the name, saying that the 2013 car is named F138 with respect to the year ('13) and the eight cylinders in the engine. It should be noted that 2013 is the last year of F1's long-established normally aspirated V8 rules, before the extensive change to turbo V6s for 2014 and beyond.

Ferrari said that part of the reason for the '8' in the 2013 car is to mark that this will be the final year that the V8 engine configuration will be used in F1. The F138 is slated to be launched this Friday at Maranello. McLaren's MP4-28 will be introduced this Thursday at Woking.

Ferrari will have different design teams that will develop next year's Formula One car at the same time. They will also work on the one for 2014, which is when the technical rules are expected to have significant changes. According to team principal Stefano Domenicali, work on a reorganization program had been ongoing for several months now.

He made his statements on the Ferrari website at ferrari.com. He explained that Ferrari will use the Toyota wind tunnel in Cologne, Germany, until August. This is because Ferrari’s own tunnel was shut down for rebuilding after it was determined to be the source of the failure of its aerodynamic updates this year.

Domenicali added that it has also implemented an improved way to divide the work between those who operate the wind tunnel and those who should focus more on the creative aspect.

Because of a software glitch, Renault’s Zoe electric car won’t arrive in dealerships until 2013. This subcompact is a major part of the EV strategy of Renault. It was initially set to be shipped to Europe showrooms by the end of 2012. After having experienced issues with the Zoe's R-Link infotainment system, deliveries to dealerships will start in 2013 and not in 2012, according to a Renault spokesperson.

Customers can order the Zoe beginning at the end of September when it will be displayed at the Paris auto show. The Zoe will be equipped with the R-Link system that offers information about the car's battery usage and other data in real time.

The spokesperson said that there are software glitches that are particular for the Zoe and don’t have an impact on R-Link's rollout on non-electric models.

In a battle of electric vehicle sales between partner auto companies, Renault expects its Zoe electric car to outsell the Nissan Leaf. Renault's EV project director Thierry Koskas, in an interview with  Automotive News Europe, cannot help but compare the Zoe and the Leaf, which are both five-passenger hatchbacks.

According to Koskas, the Zoe's main selling point is that it is laden with more advanced technologies for a lower price compared with the Leaf. The Zoe is also more compact that the Leaf; the former measuring 4,084mm in length and the latter at 4445mm.

Koskas noted that the Zoe sports some technologies not found on the Leaf, like the braking energy-recovery system, a heat pump, and a special series of energy efficient tires. Koskas said that the Zoe is a next-generation car, with its launch scheduled two years later than the Leaf.

Silverstone Auctions will attempt to auction off a Toleman TG184-2 Formula One car driven by Ayrton Senna in his debut F1 season at The Spring Sale on May 16. This amazing car, which has made a mark in motorsport history, has become famous for having been used by Senna to get a second place finish in the rainy 1984 Monaco GP, where he first displayed his astonishing talent. According to the managing director of Silverstone Auctions Nick Whale, this race car is one of the most important items that it has ever offered. Since then, Senna’s achievements have reached amazing heights.

Many even consider him as the greatest F1 driver ever. This would be a main attraction at the auction since it’s extremely rare to get any motorsport item that could be tracked back to Ayrton Senna. For the last 16 years, the Toleman had stayed in private ownership. Senna had driven this car to place third in the British and seventh in the Canadian Grand Prix.

On Silverstone Auctions’ first auction of the year, it had offered Senna’s helmet and race suit. The helmet fetched £74,750 while the race suit was sold for £35,650. These are both significantly higher than their pre-sale estimates. At this upcoming auction, there will be an incredible lineup of race cars, modern sports cars, and motorcycles as well as “automobilia.” It will also put up for action a 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7, which is expected to be priced at between £190,000 to £210,000.
