Europeans can now get the City Cross Edition of the Fiat 500L

The Fiat 500L may not be as adorable as its smaller Fiat 500 sibling, but a lot of people do find it more appealing. However, to keep the small SUV interesting, Fiat came up with the City Cross Edition, which gives it an overall, more rugged look.

The City Cross edition will only be available in Europe, and it will include physical changes like a bigger bumper, new skid plates, a refreshed grille, and suspension that has been increased by an inch (25 millimeters). It now comes standard with a set of 17-inch alloy wheels, and customers will be able to choose from nine colour options. One of them would be the Sicilia Orange finish that you can see in the photo.

These colours are not just limited to the exterior, as buyers can opt to extend colour customization to the cabin. This includes an enveloped dashboard fascia that they can get in either black or white. Furthermore, they get also get black fabric seats that have the “500” logo stitched on the backrests for a sportier feel. This is what Fiat meant when they refer to “further customization options” - personalizing the car inside and out.

The all-new 2014 Fiat 500L has earned the recognition as a 2013 Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety. This revolutionary four-door B-segment hatchback is just one of the two Chrysler Group vehicles to be named in the recent batch of IIHS assessments. For the last 10 months, the IIHS has commended 14 Chrysler Group vehicles.

To be designated as a Top Safety Pick, the vehicle has to get a “good” rating in the following tests: side impact, front moderate-overlap impact, roof-crush experienced from a rollover, and a rear collision that may induce whiplash. The all-new Fiat 500L was given the highest-possible score of “good” in all of these tests.

Jason Stoicevich, Head of Fiat Brand for North America, Chrysler Group LLC, said that the all-new 2014 Fiat 500L is a “unique” offering in this market as it merges Italian style with a loft-like interior, tremendous value and sophisticated safety features like reactive head restraints and seven standard air bags.

Fiat brought in the Fiat 500L to its dealers in the United States with the expectation that it will boost its sales in the country. But the Fiat 500L failed to do so and the brand saw its sales in September 2013 decline by 24 percent. As a result, Fiat posted sales of only 32,743 units in the first nine months of 2013 – a level that is more or less similar to the brand’s deliveries in the same period in 2012.

The addition of the 500L as well as the addition of more dealers didn’t help the stagnating sales. Dealers are disappointed with the figures posted by their dealership, according to Alan Haig, president of automotive services for Presidio Group, a financial services firm that brokers dealership sales. A dealer in northern US has the same view. He told Automotive News that the Fiat brand has “become a stepchild.” He said that although Chrysler doesn't want to hear that, “that's the reality."

He told Automotive News that his Fiat store is operating like a used-car lot, supplemented by whatever Fiats he can sell.  Jason Stoicevich, head of the Fiat brand in the US, is optimistic that sales of the 500L will grow.  He remarked that while their online traffic has improved, it takes a few months for those considering a 500L to get into showrooms.

The Serbian unit of Fiat SpA has trimmed its annual output forecast for the Fiat 500L lineup due to delays in introducing the model range in Russia, according to Antonio Ferrara, chief executive of Fiat Automobili Srbija. Ferrara trimmed the unit’s upper end of the expected sales from 150,000 to 140,000 vehicles as sales to the Russian market have yet to commence.

He remarked that if the Russian market will continue to delay, they have to further change the sales forecast. In mid-March 2013, the company told a business forum in Serbia that the site expected to build between 110,000 and 150,000 units. Serbia currently has a free-trade agreement with Russia, but it excludes cars.

The country has been pushing to have cars included in the free-trade agreement to allow exports of Fiat vehicles to Russia under more favorable terms. The site is a EUR1 billion ($1.3 billion) joint venture between Serbia and Fiat. Established in 2008, the joint venture is 67 percent owned by Fiat and 33 percent by the Serbian state.

The first batch of Fiat 500Ls intended for consumers in North America has finally arrived. Around 3,000 Fiat 500Ls started their long-haul journey from the carmaker’s Kragujevac site in Serbia in March 2013. They were then taken by train to the port of Bar in Montenegro, where they were loaded on a vessel on May 10, 2013.

The vessel then headed for North America, arriving in the port of Baltimore in the United States on May 23, 2013. After unloading the US share of the Fiat 500L shipment, the vessel then proceeded to the port of Halifax in Canada, where it unloaded the rest of the new vehicle units on May 26, 2013.

In February 2013, Fiat was named as the 'Companybest 2012' by a jury from Autobest, an organization for the auto industry in emerging European markets, for the carmaker’s investment in the reconstruction of Kragujevac site in Serbia, turning it into one of the most modern car plants in Europe.

An image of the seven-seat Fiat 500XL (a stretched version of the 500L) has recently been leaked. It appears to have been taken inside Fiat’s plant. This model has longer rear quarterlights. According to online reports, the 500XL is longer than the 500L. Sources told Autocar previously that the 500XL is a “further development of the 500L.”

It will be offered together with the 500L and it will be set up in the same way as the Ford C-Max/Grand C-Max and Renault Scenic/Grand Scenic.

Fiat has yet to officially confirm it but it’s believed that the new Fiat 500 variant will offer an engine lineup similar to that of the 500L. This means that it’s likely to be available with the 105bhp 0.9-litre TwinAir and 95bhp 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and a 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel.

A subsidy deal was made between Serbia and Fiat to build a more affordable version of the 500L minicar for the domestic market, according to the Blic newspaper. The report, which cited Finance Minister Mladjan Dinkic, said that under the agreement, the Serbian unit of Fiat, which is based in the central city of Kragujevac, will build a version of 500L for 10,900 euros ($14,200) or about 3,000 euros lower than its regular price.

This plant, which is a 1 billion euro ($1.3 billion) joint venture that’s 67% owned by Fiat and 33% by Serbia, will utilize a one-time government subsidy from this year’s budget for 1,400 new hires this year and next to make the cheaper model. The Fiat 500L, a stretched version of the Fiat 500 minicar, is already built in Serbia to be exported.

Dinkic told Blic that Fiat has made a promise to create 1,400 new jobs. For this, the company will provide subsidies of 10,000 euros for every new worker, It has also agreed that this money will be used to build a variant of the 500L for the Serbian domestic market. The Finance Ministry has yet to comment on this report. The Serbian government subsidizes direct foreign investments to aid it in emerging from recession and to fight unemployment, which presently stands at around 25%.

Fiat’s 500L Trekking is set to have its debut in Europe at the Geneva Auto Show on March 5. Sales will start this June in this market. This model will be going up against the subcompact SUVs like the Opel/Vauxhall Mokka, Ford EcoSport, Peugeot 2008 and Renault Captur. The pricing details have not been unveiled yet. SUV elements can be found in the 500L Trekking – a version of the 500L small minivan.

These include higher ground clearance, larger wheels, rugged wheel arches and an electronically controlled front differential that raises the traction on slippery roads. We saw the 500L Trekking being previewed at the Los Angeles auto show last October. The 500L is the first model from Fiat to be created from its conception to be available in Europe and the U.S. Fiat dealerships in Europe will begin to get the 500L this November.

Meanwhile, the 500L and 500L Trekking will go on sale in the U.S. this June. It’s believed that a seven-seat 500XL variant will go on sale in Europe this July. The U.S. won’t be getting the 500XL since Fiat doesn’t think that seven-seat small minivans will have a market in this country. Fiat estimates that the 500L Trekking will make up about 50% of all 500L units sold in the U.S. It’s also believed to account for around 15% of sales in Europe.

Fiat is offering some attractive 500L pre-launch offers for customers who will make an early order for the vehicle. Interested buyers who reserve their new Fiat 500L before the car’s commercial rollout in March 2013 will gain access to a special welcome package that consists of: a Beats by Dr. Dre audio system and a wheel upgrade – for a total value of around £900.

With the Beats audio system, passengers could indulge themselves in a listening experience brought about by crystal-clear sound and high definition. The wheel upgrade for the new 500L will vary according to the three different trim levels. For instance, 16-inch steel wheels come as standard in the Easy trim, but could be upgraded to 16-inch Silver alloy wheels for an additional price of £300.

16-inch alloy wheels that come as standard on the Pop Star and Lounge trims could be upgraded to 17-inch Dark Grey alloy wheels for £300. Fiat also developed a competitive finance package on Fiat 500L, with a clear price difference between variants.

It’s no fluke that the Fiat 500 has been adored by so many for over 55 years. Even so, Fiat continues to enhance its style, fuel economy, and driving pleasure. In fact, the all-new 2014 Fiat 500L has more than 42% more interior space and could now seat five people. It comes with appealing driving dynamics, a 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo engine with a best-in-class 160hp and two six-speed transmission offerings that all have a contemporary Italian design.

Since the global debut of the modern Fiat 500 in 2007, the automaker has reported sales of over a million units in 110 countries. The all-new Fiat 500L now offers a new approach to the car’s uniqueness when it comes to style, to how it communicates with the outside world, and to how it achieves a new on-board experience.

The “L” in the model name refers to the six dimensions of the Fiat 500L. The first is “Leveraging,” which represents the brand's approach to the iconic Cinquecento design DNA. "Large," talks about functionality and space with its new "small-wide" vehicle architecture. "Loft," stands for the trendsetting environment with exclusive panoramic views and the segment's biggest dual-pane sunroof (20.7 sq.ft. or 1.92 m2 dual-pane glass system).

The design is complete by the 17 x 7-inch aluminum wheels, which support the vehicle’s adventurous personality. There is no postponement of the September launch of Fiat's new 500L minivan even with the likelihood of delays in the infrastructure of its plant in Serbia where the model is produced, a company spokesman said. According to reports from Italian media, Serbia’s new government is late in paying 60 million euro ($75.10 million) to Fiat for the plant.

It has also yet to build an access road that links the plant to the main highway. The factory is located in Kragujevac, which is 150km south of Belgrade. About one billion euros have been spent by Fiat and the Serbian government on the plant, which started operations on April 14. It is scheduled to employ 2,400 people, which rolls out up to 200,000 cars annually.

The spokesman said that the infrastructure problems won’t lead to any delay in the 500L production. The spokesman also said that a "fact finding" meeting has been set for Wednesday between Fiat Vice-Chairman Alfredo Altavilla and Serbian politicians.

Fiat’s new 500L minivan has a starting price of 15,550 euros in Europe. Fiat declined to discuss its sales goals for the fourth variant of its 500 minicar range. At the media launch of this new model on July 3, Fiat brand global head Olivier Francois cited the “uncertainty of the European market” for the company’s decision not to give a sales target.

The 500L will be joining the 500 hatchback, Abarth performance version and 500C convertible. It will start selling in Italy and France this September, followed by the rest of Europe this October. It’s expected that the 500L will go on sale in North American, and maybe even in Asia, next year.

Francois said that the installed capacity for the 500L is 600 units each day at Fiat's plant in Kragujevac, Serbia. He also said that production started on July 4 – which marks the 55th anniversary of the original 500 model’s launch on July 4, 1957. Output is expected to increase to 550 units a day by the end of the year. Mauro Pierallini, Fiat Group's head of engineering, said that the 500 L project required the investment of a billion euros.

When Fiat unveiled the Fiat 500L, the larger version of the Fiat 500, at the Geneva Motor Show last month, onlookers, the media and other interested parties were not able to know how many persons the car could carry. The main reason was that Fiat did not bother to open the doors of the Fiat 500L, as the company has yet to finalize the interior of 500’s big brother.

But thanks to Roberto Giolito, head of the Fiat design centre in Turin, the puzzle has been solved! According to Giolito, the Fiat 500L that will be rolled out at the end of the 2012 in Europe -- and in February 2013 in the United Kingdom -- will be a five-seater car.

Fiat is planning to showcase the 500L’s new interiors at the Paris Show in late September. Giolito further revealed that Fiat is planning to unveil a seven-seater 500L right after the five-seater version.Seven seats may seem awkward for a small vehicle like the 500L, but Fiat has already done it with the 1957 Fiat 600 Multipla, which the company claims was the world's first multi-purpose vehicle.

What the Fiat 500L represents is the future of the ‘500’ sub-brand. It had recently debuted last month at the Geneva Motor Show and is the first of a series of multi-purpose vehicles to arrive. When the 500 was launched by Fiat in 2007, the automaker didn’t hesitate in following Mini’s example in its presentation and marketing for it to be an in-demand fashion item.

The campaign was very effective in making the 500 the top-selling model in Europe. Fiat threw out the prospect of making a stand-alone brand such as Mini but it thinks that the 500 family can be extended beyond the Panda-based A-sector model. The L in 500L means ‘Large’ and is considered as a counterpart of the Mini Countryman but is priced lower.

When compared to the Countryman, the 500L, at 4140mm, is longer by 50mm longer and taller by 100mm than the Countryman. The 500L looks more like a typical compact MPV but with conventional doors and just five seats. Roberto Giolito, Fiat’s design chief and the ‘father’ of the 500, has carried over the “smiling face” of the original car for this bigger model.
