First-ever Ford F-150 diesel version is set to arrive this spring, specs released

Ford Motor Co. revealed that it will be offering a new Power Stroke 3.0-liter V6 engine for its F-150 trucks. With this addition, customers now have a total of six choices for the engine of the F-150.

The new engine is capable of delivering 250 hp with peak torque of 440 lb.-ft., figures that customers are sure to love. Fuel efficiency meanwhile is expected to be at an EPA-estimated value of 30 mpg highway. Towing capacity is projected to be the best for its segment at 11,400 lbs. with payload capacity measured to be at 2,020 lbs.

This latest engine was designed by none other than the same powertrain team responsible for coming up with the Power Stroke 6.7-liter engine used in Ford’s Super Duty trucks going back as far as 2011. The new engine was developed in order to meet the specific demands of F-150 customers in North America. These are customers that haul and tow more frequently compared to customers in other markets. Proof of this is the fact that the maximum torque is accessible at 1,750 rpm, with strong torque being delivered all across the rpm range. These features make the F-150 the best vehicle to haul, or even tow, heavy loads across long distances.

2018 Ford Mustang loses V6 engine but gains 10-speed auto and some interesting upgrades

A forum post in Mustang6G and a succeeding blog post have revealed some interesting details regarding the 2018 Ford Mustang. While there may not be a lot of details divulged, there is enough to get an idea of what to expect. We get for instance an idea of what colors to expected for the regular version and the Shelby.

In terms of transmissions though, it will still use the automatic version but instead of the 6-speed unit, it is fitted with a 10-speed one. This is the same one inside the Raptor and even some of the F-150 models. The shift is not that surprising considering that this can be seen as the best next step and if equipped correctly, can enhance not only performance but efficiency as well.

On the outside, there is the possibility that the 2018 Ford Mustang will have new headlights and new taillights too. There is also the chance that the bumpers will be redesigned. At the rear portion, Ford is likely to make a dual exhaust available, though the post does not show on what engine it will be paired with.

Ford is investing $500 million to build compact V6 EcoBoost for 2015 F150

Ford Motor Co. is making a $500-million investment to build a new compact lightweight turbocharged V-6 engine to be fitted for 2015 F-150 pickup at its Lima site in Ohio. This new 2.7-liter engine, unveiled at Detroit auto show in January along the 2015 F-150, should help the pickup trim the fuel economy gap with Chrysler’s Ram 1500 EcoDiesel.

Ram’s pickup features a 3.0-liter diesel engine as well as an EPA rating of 28 mpg highway – the best in the industry among pickups. Currently, the most efficient F-150 is rated at 23 mpg on the highway – making it just 1 mpg highway below the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. The Detroit 3 are making heavy investments to hike truck fuel economy to 30.2 mpg by 2025 and comply with new EPA fuel economy regulations.

Ford will commence production of the new V-6 engine in Lima, Ohio in the fourth quarter of 2014 to coincide with the launch of the 2015 F-150, Ford said in a statement. It will also boost its Lima workforce by 300 jobs. Ford will soon offer four engines in the 2015 F-150 -- the 2.7-liter turbo; a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V-6; a 3.5-liter turbo engine; and a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V-8. All of them will be paired to six-speed automatic gearbox.

Ford has disclosed plans to bring its 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost racing engine to the 2014 TUDOR United SportsCar Championship series. The 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost racing engine beneath the hood of a new-look Daytona Prototype car will have its debut at the 2014 Rolex 24 at Daytona on Jan. 25-26, 2013 and will participate in the entire 12-race season.

Michael Shank Racing will be the first team to fit the EcoBoost racing engine inside its DP car. Jamie Allison, director, Ford Racing, remarked that they place “great emphasis” on racing production-based vehicles as well as production-based technologies.

Allison added that they are proud to bring a direct-injected, twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engine to the United SportsCar Championship in a field of competitive V8-powered entries, adding that they want to show Ford EcoBoost’s capabilities as an engine that provides both performance and fuel economy, on and off the track.

A third shift will start at Ford Motor Co.’s Cleveland engine plant on Monday to cope with the bigger demand for light vehicles that use its fuel-efficient 3.5-liter EcoBoost and 3.7-liter V-6s. A ceremony was held at the plant where Mark Fields, president of the Americas, said that the production capacity is being expanded to meet the rising needs for fuel-efficient engines.

The engine plant in Cleveland is the first and only facility in North America to make EcoBoost engines. EcoBoost technology, a combination of Direct injection and turbocharging, was initially used in 2009 on the Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS. Ford said that around 180,000 Cleveland-built 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6s have been bought since 2009.

Ford sold 121,000 vehicles with 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6s in 2011. This is when an EcoBoost option was offered for the F-150 pickup. During the first quarter of 2012, Ford sold over 39,000 vehicles with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine. This is more than 285% higher than the previous year. The addition of the third shift will mean that around 250 jobs will be preserved.

To prove its fuel efficiency, Ford will attempt to drive a brand-new 2011 Ford Mustang V6 to accomplish 1000 laps on a single tank at Bristol Motor Speedway.

The new Ford Explorer Hybrid is the first dedicated hybrid model in the Explorer family. Ford is aiming to make the Explorer Hybrid capable of returning more than 500 miles of range before having to refuel.

Furthering the capability of the hybrid powertrain of the new Ford Explorer Hybrid is an all-new 10-speed modular hybrid transmission as well as a liquid-cooled, lithium-ion battery. The Mustang Shelby GT500 will arrive in Fall 2019, with prices to be announced close to launch date.

Basically a Mustang without a pony logo but with a cobra badge, the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will be powered by a 5.2-liter V8 engine with Eaton 2.65-liter Supercharger. This mill is mated to a segment-first dual-clutch transmission, a Tremec 7-speed dual clutch transmission that is capable of shifts in under 100 milliseconds.

Ford didn’t disclose the exact output numbers for the 5.2-liter V8 engine, but said that this mill is capable of deliver more than 700 of whooping horsepower. According to Ford, this should allow the new Mustang Shelby GT500 can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in mid-three seconds and reach a quarter mile in sub-11 seconds.

But when the US carmaker started accepting orders for the Ford GT, the total number of applicants quickly grew to more than 6,500. This number was just for the 2016 iteration of the supercar. Unfortunately, Ford can only accommodate 1,000 of the applicants, which means that the Ford GT is practically sold out.

In June this year, rival carmakers Ford and Volkswagen inked a memorandum of agreement for a possible strategic alliance. Months after signing the MoU, automotive industry analysts are now floating the ideas of possible merger or an equity swap between the American and German companies. Two of these are the introductions of new sporty model based from the ST-Line trim of the Ford Fiesta. Perhaps the satisfying demand for the ST-Line – which endows the Fiesta a sportier and more dynamic appearance – has led Ford to create two new special editions based on this trim. These new editions – the new Ford Fiesta ST-Line Red Edition and the Fiesta ST-Line Black Edition feature distinctive exterior and interior elements that make them stand out from the rest.

Making full use of Ford Performance-inspired styling, these new Ford Fiesta ST-Line edition models are available in three- and five-door body styles. More and more vehicles are using automatic transmissions to send power from the engine to the wheels. Even supposed sporty cars have been ditching manual transmissions in favor of automatic gearboxes. But the upcoming 2020 Ford Bronco could come fitted with a manual transmission, according to a report by Jalopnik.

Citing a number of sources privy with the plans, Jalopnik reported that Ford is tapping Getrag to develop a new manual gearbox for the 2020 Ford Bronco. The partnership between Ford and Getrag to develop a new manual transmission for the Bronco isn't surprising as the German company is also the one producing the manual gearbox – the MT-82 six-speed unit -- for the Ford Mustang. The new manual transmission for the new Bronco will be named as the MT-88. As per Jalopnik’s sources, this Bronco-bound transmission will be a seven-speed unit that would send power to wheels from Ford’s 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine.

According to Jalopnik, there is a possibility that the new MT-88 manual transmission share components with the MT-82 manual gearbox. Likewise, Ford may also decide to use the new MT-88 manual transmission for the next generation of the Mustang. Nonetheless, while the current plan has the new MT-88 manual transmission being fitted in the Bronco, the fact that the vehicle is still being developed means things may change as Ford gets closer to the official unveiling of the Bronco.

At the start of the year, Ford announced that it is planning to develop a new electric vehicle that focuses on performance. At the announcement, Ford said that the new performance EV would be named Mach 1. Eventually, the Mach 1 moniker was shelved, but not the performance EV. Now, Ford has released a new teaser that officially previews this upcoming EV.

During the January announcement, Ford said that this performance EV would released in 2020. In March this year, Ford Global Markets President Jim Farley remarked that the performance EV would be like a four-door SUV version of a Ford Mustang. Essentially, this means that the new performance EV would be an electric SUV with the looks or performance of the Mustang, or both.

Now, the recently released teaser image looks like a sketched silhouette of Ford’s new performance EV. It may seem so vague and unclear until a closer inspection reveals that it features the rear end of a Ford Mustang. That basically confirms the relationship of the new performance to Ford’s iconic pony car. However, this is a teaser image, and a sketch nonetheless, which means that it final looks may differ from the Mustang but retain some cues that indicate its high-performance nature.

Every June or July of every year, motor racing vehicles – especially historic ones -- flock at West Sussex, England to challenge the hillclimb event of the highly prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed. For the first time in the festival’s history, a vehicle will brave the hillclimb without a driver behind its wheels.

So far, the Goodwood Festival of Speed has been graced by conventionally powered and electrified vehicles. However, all of these vehicles completed the 1.86-km (1.16 miles) hillclimb with a driver piloting the steering wheel. This is due to change this July 12, 2018 when an autonomous vehicle created by the collaboration between Siemens and Cranfield University tries to run the course.

People who might want to witness the first autonomous hillclimb at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, however, should not expect an all-new self-driving car climbing its way up to the Goodwood House. Instead, they should look out for 1965 Ford Mustang with a distinctive silver wrap. The sides of this 1965 Mustang feature the number “25”, commemorating the 25th anniversary of Goodwood. This autonomous Mustang also features the blue “Siemens” logo and a stripe running on the lower flank with the same color as the logo. Stripes of the same color are also found on the hood and roof of the autonomous Mustang.

The Ford F-150 Raptor is probably one of the coolest offroad vehicles out there, and the great news is that the automaker already has planned upgrades for the 2019 model year, to make the already rugged pickup even more capable. The upgraded truck will be easier to drive even on extremely bumpy roads, and this will be out in dealerships by the end of the year.

The Blue Oval will further improve the Raptor suspension after already fitting larger diameter FOX Racing shocks for the 2017 model year upgrade. The newest version features Live Valve technology that varies compression rates to adjust the damping to the terrain ahead.

This adapts to the terrain in real time to actively maximize handling, comfort and bottom out resistance. Sensors found on the suspension and body can monitor what’s happening while tweaking the setup accordingly. The technology will even be aware of when the pickup is in the air when it jumps, stiffening the dampers to ensure a smoother landing.
