According to Ellingson, he encountered stop-and-go traffic on the highway going home. During one of the halts, Ellingson and the vehicle on the front had been stationary and waiting for some time. Not only is the 2017 Honda Civic Type R new in the North American market, it recently got labelled the fastest car with a front-wheel drive setup at the Green Hell. Now, the Civic Type R will exclusively be given a six-speed manual transmission, just because an automatic gearbox would make the car weigh too much.
This was explained by the company during an interview between Yuji Matsumochi, Assistant Large Project Leader of the Civic Powertrain, and Australian publication Car Advice. So the Civic will come standard with the manual, with no option to get an automatic variant. This is because the Type R now weighs at 62.5 percent to 37.5 (that's front to rear axle). So a dual-clutch transmission will only make it much heavier, with its 400 Nm (295 lb-ft), which will definitely affect the car's performance.
Matsumochi explained that a front wheel drive will naturally need a lighter powertrain, and since the Type R already has a heavier engine, it will only work with a lightweight transmission. Honda is currently on fire! After releasing the Civic Type R in the United States last week, the Japanese company is already thinking of ways to keep sales at a high and steady level. And what is the solution to this, you ask?
Well, Hideki Matsumoto, chief engineer of the Civic model range said in an interview with Automotive News that he plans to do more than just one Civic Type R. So we’re assuming that maybe he means that there will be more versions of the front-wheel-drive Nürburgring record holder.
So anyway, what he really meant was that he wants to produce a more potent version of the current Type R that produces 306 horsepower. Of course, more versions mean better options. Apart from that, he also plans to engineer an all-wheel-drive option to go hand in hand with the Ford Focus RS, and the VW Golf R. Honda just released the new and affordable 2017 Civic Si, available as a coupe or a sedan. The best part is that it is already out in the market since May 13, and Honda just announced it a day before it went on sale.
We do know that coupes usually cost more than sedans, but for the Civic Si, that is not the case. Both models have a price tag of $24,775 for the base version, inclusive of the $875 destination fee. And if customers opt for performance tires, that will be a total of $24,975. Still very affordable, I would say.
Though it may not be as powerful as its main competitors, the Civic Si is still a very good choice, perhaps for first-time car owners. The Environmental Protection Agency has released its ratings for Honda’s Civic Type R. City mileage rating has been estimated at 22 mpg with highway rated at 28 mpg. Combined fuel efficiency rating meanwhile is pegged at 25 mpg. It’s not that surprising for many people though considering that the turbocharged engine inside can offer 306 hp.
But when compared to the usual Civic sedan, the fuel economy figures on the Civic Type R are still better. The sedan version for example has a city rating of 31 mpg with a highway rating of 40 mpg. Compared to other models, the values of the Civic Type R are similar to the Volkswagen Golf R though the latter is better when it comes to highway rating. One model that is better than the Type R though is the Ford Focus RS with city rating of 19 mpg, highway at 25 mpg, and combined rating of 22 mpg.
Even with these fuel efficiency ratings, customers will not likely be deterred. One reason is that even if the Type R does have a front-wheel drive, the performance remains to be excellent whether it’s running in a straight line or going on corners. This is remarkable, considering that in running the Nurburgring lap, it only took the Type R a total of 7 minutes and 43 seconds. Just recently, Honda released the new 2017 Civic Si but it seems like the updates are a bit underwhelming for the fans. It has been a while since it was reported that the Si will be powered by the same 1.5-liter turbocharged engine used in the Civic line. Everyone began to expect that it will be the “fastest, most powerful Si” (as per Honda’s claim) – but think again. If you’re thinking that powerful is synonymous to super-powered Si, then you better not get your hopes up just yet.
So, what did Honda mean when they said “most powerful”? It is actually a reference to the engine’s capability of producing a maximum of 192 lb.-ft. of torque, much more than the usual Si’s peak torque (i.e. the last Si’s 174 lb.-ft.) but with only 205 horsepower. This may be quite disappointing for the Civic Si, but at least peak power is achieved at 5,700 rpm or 1,200 revs more than the outgoing model, while maximum torque comes in at 2,100 rpm ‘til around 5,000 rpm – which is actually quite decent, considering it is 70 percent of the engine’s rev range. The 2017 Civic Si only comes with a six-speed manual transmission, but in theory, it seems like it will take “less rowing” to keep the driving experience quite exciting.
The peak numbers may not be that impressive as we all expected it to be. On a positive note, the low and mid-range power levels, where majority of drivers spend their motoring time, will now become livelier. The new Civic Si has a more rigid body featuring dual-pinion adaptive electric power steering, sport-tuned suspension, an adaptive damper system, 12.3-inch front brakes, and 235/40 R18 rubber wheels with optional performance tires. Despite this, the new Civic Si is significantly lighter than the outgoing model. Recently, it appears as if the Civic has been hogging the news. In a way, this is not unexpected considering that Honda is on the verge of officially launching its five-door Type R.
