Every June or July of every year, motor racing vehicles – especially historic ones -- flock at West Sussex, England to challenge the hillclimb event of the highly prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed. For the first time in the festival’s history, a vehicle will brave the hillclimb without a driver behind its wheels.
So far, the Goodwood Festival of Speed has been graced by conventionally powered and electrified vehicles. However, all of these vehicles completed the 1.86-km (1.16 miles) hillclimb with a driver piloting the steering wheel. This is due to change this July 12, 2018 when an autonomous vehicle created by the collaboration between Siemens and Cranfield University tries to run the course.
People who might want to witness the first autonomous hillclimb at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, however, should not expect an all-new self-driving car climbing its way up to the Goodwood House. Instead, they should look out for 1965 Ford Mustang with a distinctive silver wrap. The sides of this 1965 Mustang feature the number “25”, commemorating the 25th anniversary of Goodwood. This autonomous Mustang also features the blue “Siemens” logo and a stripe running on the lower flank with the same color as the logo. At the start of the year, Ford announced that it is planning to develop a new electric vehicle that focuses on performance. At the announcement, Ford said that the new performance EV would be named Mach 1. Eventually, the Mach 1 moniker was shelved, but not the performance EV. Now, Ford has released a new teaser that officially previews this upcoming EV.
During the January announcement, Ford said that this performance EV would released in 2020. In March this year, Ford Global Markets President Jim Farley remarked that the performance EV would be like a four-door SUV version of a Ford Mustang. Essentially, this means that the new performance EV would be an electric SUV with the looks or performance of the Mustang, or both.
Now, the recently released teaser image looks like a sketched silhouette of Ford’s new performance EV. It may seem so vague and unclear until a closer inspection reveals that it features the rear end of a Ford Mustang. That basically confirms the relationship of the new performance to Ford’s iconic pony car. Earlier this week, on exactly Monday morning, was a devastating incident that involved Uber, an autonomous vehicle, and a pedestrian. Long story short, there was a pedestrian that was hit by an autonomous Uber vehicle, and was left dead in Arizona.
The vehicle was an autonomous Volvo XC90, and the victim was a female pedestrian who had just crossed in front of the vehicle outside of a crosswalk. The woman did not pass away on the spot, and was even brought to the hospital. However, she later died due to the injuries she had on her body.
It was in Tempe, near Mill Avenue and Curry Road, where the incident occurred, said the local police. This, in fact, is the very first incident that involved a self driving vehicle. Ford is introducing a new limited edition of the 2019 Ford Mustang GT – the California Special -- that boasts of aesthetics elements derived from the 1968 original version, modern performance and styling, as well as innovative technologies.
The very first Mustang California Special was born in 1968, with design cues inspired by the 1967 Shelby GT prototype. This came to be called the California Special. The original Mustang California Special was provided with distinguishing elements like a blacked-out grille and fog lamps, as well as a racing stripe running on sides through just ahead of the rear fender scoop.

The rear wheel drive sports car will be put up for auction at the Barrett Jackson Palm Beach 2018 sale. It will be a rare treat for collectors as this is one of only 45 examples ever built and it comes with a number of unique design and performance elements to boot. A couple of days ago, official sketches of the 2019 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500’s engine emerged online. And now, The Truth About Cars just found out that the pony is capable of reaching the 200 miles per hour (320 kilometers per hour) mark.
Sources say that there had been leaked information about the speedometer verification procedure, and that the car’s speedometer will reach 214 miles per hour (344 kilometers per hour), which means that the GT500 performs a little better than its rivals now.
Apart from its new and impressive top speed now, there had also been leaked documents indicating that the car will gain a couple of driving modes to improve its performance. The company is seeing four trends in the auto industry that are causing such vulnerabilities: vehicles access, software control, autonomous driving as well as the changing state of software. Sandeep Chennakeshu, President of BlackBerry Technology Solutions, said in a statement that protecting a vehicle from cybersecurity threats requires a holistic approach.

SpeedKore Performance Group, known for its historic and modern vehicles, has just unveiled the custom-built Ford Mustang Boss 302 at the 2017 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. The bespoke vintage car from the 1970s was commissioned by Hollywood superstar Robert Downey Jr. who's famous for his role as Iron Man or Tony Stark from the Avengers film franchise. Downey Jr. spent time collaborating ideas with SpeedKore to restore the Mustang Boss 302’s original design while giving it several modern-day touches.
The muscle car has been equipped with Ford Performance Aluminator 5.0-liter V8 engine with Stage 2 Ford Roush Supercharger and is paired to a Bowler T56 transmission. It is rather sad that SpeedKore hasn’t disclosed any information regarding its performance but as expected, that should probably come out much later.
Embodying the same elements from SpeedKore’s latest projects, the 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302 also features lightweight carbon fiber materials which are evident on the muscle car’s front and rear spoilers, quarter extensions, fenders, deck lid, hood and bumpers. Last week at the 2017 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, we witnessed something that may come as a threat to the Dodge Hellcat, and it is Ford’s latest Shelby Mustang, and it has got a whopping 1,000 horsepower (745 kilowatts), which is why it was dubbed the Shelby 1000. The automaker’s latest kit can be added onto any 2015 or later Ford Mustang.
Unlike before, the Mustang GT will lose the 5.0 liter V8 that it once had. This will then be replaced by a 5.2-liter V8 from Shelby GT350 that will be added with a 4.5 liter Whipple supercharger that pushes its limit to an estimated 1,000 horsepower (745 kilowatts). Apart from the new engine, it will also get a new high-flow fuel system, intercooler, ECU tuning, and an upgraded manual transmission.
It will never be enough to just give the Mustang a new and more powerful engine, right? And because all of you probably agree, Ford does too. This is why they are giving the Mustang an all new front fascia, hood, front fenders, rockers, quarter-panels, rear diffuser, exhaust, and widened front and rear tracks. The body now sits on a fully adjustable coilover suspension, and new Brembo brakes for added stopping power. One of the few people we know who collect high-powered modified Mustangs would be pro Formula Drift driver and motorsports enthusiast Vaughn Gittin Jr. Today, he is back with another installment, and the muscle car will make an appearance at the 2017 SEMA Show on October 31st in Vegas. One thing we expect from it, like all other RTR Mustangs, is a whole bag of horsepower.
From the outside, the Ford Mustang gets the same signature style elements from the previous model. But now, it has a more aggressive front fascia, where the grille is highlighted by LED accenting lights in triangle. It has got a meaner looking front splitter as well as a more sculpted hood too. The exterior is finished off with black accent striping on the hood and side profile, a more subtle lip spoiler, and a new set of high-spoke wheels.
Gittin has not mentioned anything in terms of this particular Mustang’s performance. However, we are guessing that it would have something close to 700 horsepower (521 kilowatts) or probably more when it makes its appearance in a few weeks. Ford announced earlier this year that it will be giving its 2018 Mustang GT an optional upgrading kit consisting of a larger radiator, six piston brake calipers, high performance tires, and so on. Moving on to the present, Ford unveils the new Level 2 performance package that is billed to fill the huge gap between the Ford Mustang’s most potent GT350 and the initially released performance pack level 1 upgrade.
It seems as if Ford did notice that “gap” from the very start and has been developing the Performance Level 2 for some time already. According to them, it will also come with a new front splitter, a custom rear spoiler, a much lower ride height, an updated steering, a new suspension, and a set of 19-inch Chauncy Eggleston wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.
Of course, other features from the Level 1 are also present on the new package including the enhanced chassis, improved steering, Brembo brakes with huge rotors and stability control. The Performance pack level 2’s main highlight will be the new set of wheels that are 1.5-inch wider. It has also brought the car much closer to the ground by 0.5 inch compared to the previous upgrade. The new 2018 Ford Mustang GT, when equipped with its optional Performance package, will be able to produce 460 horsepower. It also comes fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires that help it sprint from zero to 60 miles per hour in just under four seconds.
It was earlier this year at the Detroit Auto Show when we first saw the Pilot Sport 4S tires, which had been introduced as a replacement of the popular Pilot Super Sport. The tire manufacturer also said that the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires not only offer a 30,000-mile warranty, but also provide high performance grip levels in whatever road condition.
The Mustang GT Performance pack will be getting a pair of 255/40R19s up front, and a pair of 275/40R19s in the back. Just last year, Cruise Automation was acquired by General Motors, and today, it is the self-driving startup that is gobbling up companies on its own. General Motors is stepping their game up once more. To make things easier for them when it comes to the development of autonomous cars, they decided to acquire California-based Strobe, Inc. Not a lot of you may have heard of this company, but Strobe specializes in LiDAR technology, and that is a huge step forward for companies who are into autonomous systems for automobiles. After the acquisition, Strobe engineers will become part of the automaker’s Cruise Automation team.
Julie Schoenfeld, Founder and CEO of Strobe, Inc., said in a statement that the successful deployment of self-driving vehicles will have to depend on the availability of LiDAR sensors. Furthermore, GM and Cruise will benefit from Strobe’s deep engineering talent and technology backed by a number of patents. And hopefully, the automaker brings these autonomous vehicles sooner than we would think.
LiDAR is different from radar systems because the former uses laser pulses to “see” an area, whereas the latter relies on radar systems to do the same thing. And the LiDAR, as we know, is much more detailed as it creates a better picture of its surroundings, which translates to a more accurate processing of information. In other words, the LiDAR system can see a more realistic picture of what’s around it - from cars, pedestrians, and the road. Therefore, the LiDAR systems will play a pivotal role in the current and future development of autonomous cars. According to Ford, the 2018 Mustang not only gets a more potent powerplant but also delivers a more efficient drivetrain too. Having said that, the refreshed model is 5.6 percent more efficient than the older version when it comes to fuel economy. Another new feature is that the pony has improved handling, thanks to the aerodynamic tweaks.
For the sake of comparison, the 2017 Ford Mustang EcoBoost (in automatic and manual) was rated 21 mpg city, 30 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined, whereas the 2018 models were rated 21 mpg city, 32 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined. On the other hand, the 2017 Ford Mustang GT in automatic and manual have ratings of 15 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined. Though the 2018 GT in manual have the same ratings, the automatic version has improved ratings at 16 mpg city, 25 mpg highway and 19 mpg combined.
Mike Del Zio, dynamics engineer of Ford, together with Jonathan Gesek, aerodynamics engineer, discovered a way to make the 2018 Mustang easier to handle. Del Zio found that high-speed cornering was not as good as the wind tunnel number indicated, which he noticed during on-track development. In the last 20 years, Lincoln had not built coupes, nor has it made convertibles. Now the question is, what should one do when he wants a two-door coupe that looks like a Lincoln? If that ever came across your mind, you were not alone. We actually have a concrete image of how it will look, because someone built one. Unfortunately, we aren’t a big fan of how it looks.
This photo was found on Reddit, and it is of a late-model Mustang Convertible that looks a bit off. That is because it had been given an additional rear bumper, and a Lincoln Continental-style spare tire carrier. Even without a photo, you could probably already imagine how it looks, and you are probably thinking - who in their right mind would do that?
But surprisingly, this is not the first time we have seen a Mustang with the parts or the body of a Lincoln. Having said that, Lincoln’s own Mark VIII once shared its platform with the Ford Thunderbird in the mid-1990s. Japanese aftermarket tuner Liberty Walk is at it again, this time with the Ford Mustang. The tuner is known worldwide because of their outrageous and unique wide body treatments when configuring models like the Toyota Prius and the Lamborghini Aventador, plus many more in between.
As mentioned earlier, one of their latest projects would be the Liberty Walk-tuned Ford Mustang, and this is the first Mustang they have tweaked. To really make it look like it is by the tuner, they gave the example their signature bolt-on fenders, new front and rear bumpers, a new read diffuser, a modified grille, and finally a ducktail spoiler. The pony is dressed in a bright red finish to complete the exterior look. LB gave it an Airrex air suspension kit for an additional $7,900 (¥790,000), to let it sit as close as it can to the pavement.
Before we forget, the Mustang now has a set of black wheels and decals all over the body, to give some accent to its bright red body. For the full-on Works package, customers will have to be willing to spend $6,800 (¥680,000). Ever heard of a driver performing a gymkhana while climbing the world-renowned Pikes Peak? Seems unusual and outrageous, but there is a driver daring enough to take on this challenge. Professional rally driver, Ken Block, is more than skilled to pilot an equally outrageous car to perform a “Climbkhana” (climbing + gymkhana) at the Pikes Peak, the high point of the El Paso county in Colorado, United States.
A gymkhana performance is a difficult thing to accomplish, and so is climbing a 14,000-feet mountain. Block managed to accomplish both in his Pikes Peak Climbkhana performance, making it seem that his methanol-fueled highly modified car was dancing as it traveled from the starting point to the finish line at the peak.
To set things straight, Block’s Climbkhana wasn’t a shot at being the fastest to complete the Pikes Peak. That record was set in 2013 by Sebastien Loeb in the driver’s seat of a Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak. He completed the 12.42 miles of the climb course in just eight minutes and 13.878 seconds. That wasn’t an easy feat, considering that climbing from 9,390 ft. (2,862 meters) to 14,110 ft. (4,300 meters) -- both above sea level – affects the performance of a typical engine due to atmospheric density or air density. As I write this, there leaves no doubt in my mind that the new Audi A8 (D5) is going to be one of the hottest stars at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. The full size luxury sedan comes with a number of autonomous driving system meeting level 3 requirements. Already, the A8 sounds quite awesome, but it will be joined by two other concept that are even more high tech - one with level 4 capabilities and another one with a level 5 status, sans the steering wheel and pedals.
The first concept, with level 4 capabilities, will have a coupe-SUV shape based on the E-Tron Sportback concept that we first witnessed at this year’s Auto Shanghai. It will still come with the same dimensions of 4.9 feet in length (16.1 feet), that carries three electric motors delivering a combined output of 496 horsepower (370 kilowatts). This concept enables the car to drive at speeds of 81 miles per hour (130 kph) on the highway, and it can even change lanes automatically without the help of a human being.
The even more advanced concept, on the other hand, will have the shape of a large car (D segment) with at least four electric motors. Naturally, we would expect a lot of power from this, and the automakers say that these will have a battery pack with enough power for 435 to 497 miles (700 to 800 kilometers) and Audi.
