McLaren CEO admits 4-seater GT is possible, but says no to 4 doors

McLaren rejects the idea of creating anything other than a sports car. That means that vehicles that would be ideal for families such as an SUV or a crossover are definitely off the table. But then, the British marque recently hinted that they may be open to producing a sports car that came with 4 seats. Yes, 2 extra seats for 2 lucky companions. In the past, the British marque has previously offered a 3-seat sports car- the iconic McLaren F1 that had a central driver's seat, bordered by 2 rear seats. Another car that will be boasting a 3 seater is the hyped BP23 Hyper GT.

McLaren representatives reiterated to the public that the legendary British auto manufacturer will keep the production of supercars a top priority, and that they’re not even considering SUVs and crossovers even as their rivals have embraced these bigger, more practical vehicles. In June 2016, Motoring.com.au communicated with McLaren's former global corporate communications manager Duncan Forrester in Goodwood Festival of Speed, and Forrester allegedly confirmed a 4-seat Macca was in the works. However, McLaren soon clarified Forrester's remarks and denied that the said 4 seat sports car is being produced.

McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt told Auto Express during the Auto Shanghai show that it would consider the market’s preferences. He also said that a 4-seater will lose some of its agility because the wheelbase will be slightly longer. However, if McLaren will be able to build a more attractive car than anyone else in the segment, then it may just be a go. This 4 seat GT model would be squaring up against the releases of Aston Martins and the Ferrari FF. Flewitt also mentioned that such a model could join the entry Sports Series lineage or be at the top of the Ultimate Series as a super GT car. Sweet.

Aston Martin Rapide will be going green, to replace V12 engine with electric variant

In 2015, Aston Martin and Williams Advanced Engineering collaborated to come up with their brainchild, the RapidE Concept. A few months later, higher ups at Aston Martin's headquarters in Gaydon signed a Memorandum of Understanding with LeEco to lead the way in producing the sedan's electric version that will hopefully be made available to the public in 2018.

Recently, Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer confirmed to the public that by 2018 the gas powered Rapide will be getting the axe, and instead, an electric version RapidE concept will take its place. Since its debut, the dashing sedan has only been made available with a V-12 engine but starting in the year 2018, it will be exclusively offered with an all-electric variant.

Even though the specific details of car's technical specs are still not in the open, the new four door all-electric Aston Martin sedan will have an increase of power - from 552 horsepower produced by the 6.0-liter gasoline engine to a whopping 800 horsepower generated by the RapidE concept's electric engine. Also, take note that the outgoing gasoline-powered sedan is capable of producing 465 lb.-ft. (630 Nm) of torque, which means that with the power that the new electric version is expected to produce, its torque may be of the same magnitude. Moreover, the RapidE concept is competent enough to reach a range of almost 200 miles (320 kilometers) with enough battery on tap. The said electric sedan will not be put on sale with the Rapide S as the electric variant will replace it altogether.

Audi is speculated to add premium four-door coupe to its A3 lineup by 2020

With Audi targeting to expand its lineup to around 60 individual premium vehicles by the end of the decade, there is a high chance that the German carmaker would try to fill in every niche in the luxury category. Thus, if Auto Express’ report is credible, there is a big chance that Audi would introduce a coupe version of its next-generation A3.

Audi is expected to launch the fourth generation of the A3 in 2018 or 2019. The series will be headlined by the saloon (sedan), hatchback and Sportback versions. However, it appears that Audi wanted to further broaden the A3 family with a four-door coupe, which should allow Volkswagen’s premium arm to compete in a niche now dominated by the Mercedes-Benz CLA. A four-door coupe version of the Audi A3 should complete the lineup when it arrives – if it arrives – by the end of the decade.

According to Auto Express, launching a four-door coupe version of the A3 would allow Audi to shift some of its compact models into the executive class sans any significant increase in their prices. This would be similar to the strategy employed by Mercedes when it launched the CLA and CLA Shooting Brake compact cars. Strategically, the move would allow Audi to better keep up with Mercedes – which managed to grab the crown as the best-selling luxury car brand in world in 2016. Creating a four-door coupe version of the A3 would enable Audi it to fulfill its target of offering 60 individual models by 2020.

Automotive News Europe, citing sources from Porsche, reported that the company is set to debut its Panamera sporty sedan during the 2016 Paris auto show on September 29. This second-generation Panamera is mainly based on the Volkswagen Group's MSB platform which is not only more fuel efficient but lighter as well. It is projected to highlight models from Lamborghini, Bugatti and Bentley.

The new Panamera is the second major product from the company to be revamped with the first one being the mid-engine 718 Boxster/Cayman line-up. After its official debut, it will then immediately go on sale in the Europe market. Sales at its two biggest single markets, the U.S. and China, will begin by 2017.

Among the company’s five model lines sold in the previous year, the Panamera was its poorest-selling. Worldwide sales for example totaled 17,207 units, a 31% drop. This was worse even when compared to the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman, combined.

Peugeot 908 RC is a sports car which gets its power from a Peugeot V12 HDi DPFS engine. ‘RC’ denotes the car’s sporting appeal and links to the RC concept cars which made their first appearance for Honda in 2002 and as such, had heavily influenced the design and feel of the 908.

The impetus behind the design was to produce a luxurious vehicle that offered charm and sophistication. This four door vehicle is both practical and impressive, offering comfort with its design as well as environmental protection. Powered by a diesel particulate filter system engine, the V12 HDi DPFS was designed with the Le Mans Race Series programme (2007) in mind.

With a 5.5 litre capacity, a top power output of over 515 kW, and outstanding torque greater than 1,200 Nm, it certainly lives up to its racing potential. This is in part achieved due to the engine’s low centre of gravity. Using a 100-degree V shaped angle, the engine sits low on the ground maximising aerodynamics and grip control.

Bentley introduced the all-new Grand Convertible Concept at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show and we expect to see very soon a production version hitting the dealerships. The new vehicle also gave some ideas to TheOphiluschin a.k.a. “The Master of Photoshop”, which created a rendering of what appears to be an impossible dream.

TheOphiluschin created a rendering of the Bentley Grand Coupe, two-door version of the Mulsanne, which would be a successor to the Brooklands Coupe. Honestly to tell you, the rendering looks incredible and if built, the Bentley Grand Coupe would be a rival to the Rolls-Royce Wraith.

Still, don’t forget that we are talking about a rendering and that the British manufacturer has currently no plans to build a two-door version of the Mulsanne.

The 2015 Lexus RC F Coupe didn’t reach the dealerships yet but the Japanese manufacturer is already thinking on a new version. Apparently, Lexus is planning a four-door version of the RC F Coupe, which will use the same platform and engine. Expected sometime in 2016, this new model will be more practical but also cheaper than the coupe.

According to Autocar, a convertible version might also be offered. So, expect the four-foor RC F to be powered by the same 5.0-liter, 32-valve V8 engine that generates more than 450 hp (335 kW) and 520 Nm of torque.

The engine will deliver the power to the rear wheels through a fuel-efficient 8-speed Sports Direct Shift, intelligent electronically controlled automatic transmission.

After showing the Multibeam LED headlamps, Daimler officially introduced the 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLS Facelift. As expected, the new car comes with a redesigned front section that consists of a new front grille, redesigned headlights as well as a brand new bumper. At the rear, we find redesigned taillights as well as a new rear bumper.

Both the CLS Coupe and CLS Shooting Brake come as standard with all-LED headlamps, while as an option the German manufacturer offers the Multibeam LED headlamps. As we said, the Multibeam LED headlamps is similar to Audi’s Matrix LED headlights but as usual, the United States will not receive them due to the rules that need separate high-beam and low-beam modes.

Each headlight features 24 high-performance LEDs, offering the best visibility on bends and roundabouts. The roundabout light is unique as it activates the cornering light function modules on the left or right before entering a roundabout in order to provide the best visibility. The headlamps are connected to the navigation system that provides the details of the locations of roundabouts along the route.

Earlier today Mercedes-Benz revealed the 2015 CLS Facelift but we didn’t tell you anything about the CLS63 AMG Facelift. This model comes with the same 5.5-liter AMG V8 biturbo engine that generates 557 hp (410 kW) and 720 Nm of torque. Despite these numbers, the CLS 63 AMG needs only 9.9 liters of petrol for 100 km, while CO2 emissions are 231 grams per km.

The CLS 63 AMG S-Model comes with the same engine that delivers 585 hp (430 kW) and 800 Nm of torque. When equipped with the AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive, fuel consumption increases to 10.6 l of fuel per 100 km, while CO2 emissions are 248 g/km.

Still, both models meet the second stage of the EU6 emissions standards. The 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG Facelift accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.2 seconds, while the Shooting Brake version is 0.1 seconds slower. When using the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, the CLS 63 AMG zooms from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, while the Shooting Brake needs 3.8 seconds.

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLS looks ready to make its official debut as the German carmaker revealed today the first teaser photos. Mercedes-Benz used the new teasers in order to underline the new technology found in the Multibeam LED headlamps. According to the official press release, each headlight features 24 individually controlled high-performance LEDs.

Mercedes’ new technology looks similar to Audi’s Matrix LED headlights that made their debut on the facelifted A8 back in September. The bad news is that Mercedes-Benz will have the same problem as Audi and we don’t expect to see the Multibeam LED headlights in the United States due to the rules that need separate high-beam and low-beam modes.

So, how do the MultiBeam LED headlights work? According to Mercedes-Benz the headlights automatically illuminate the road with precision-controlled distribution of exceptionally bright light.

Audi has the A5 Sportback, while BMW recently introduced the 4-Series Gran Coupe. But, what about Mercedes-Benz? Although the German carmaker didn’t reveal any plans for an upcoming four-door coupe based on the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Remco Meulendijk decided to make a rendering.

The result is quite impressive and we admit that if Mercedes-Benz would build this vehicle, we would be the first to buy it. As you can see from the photos, the Mercedes-Benz CLC-Class is inspired by the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe, featuring a sexy rear end with stylish taillights as well as frameless doors.

The front end would be identical to the C-Class, which means it will feature the H7 halogen headlamps as standard or the optional LED Intelligent Light System.

The latest news about a new model from Lexus come from Japanese magazine Mag-X, who says that an unusual prototype was caught wearing heavy camouflage. According to the guys from Mag-X via LexusEnthusiast, the prototype showed a front-end that looks like a GS F Sport, but the long hood and short trunk suggest that Lexus might be working on a four-door coupe to take on cars such as the Audi A7 Sportback, BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe or the Mercedes-Benz CLS.

Lexus is currently working on new models and a four-door coupe would be the perfect fit in company’s lineup. Last week, Lexus introduced the RC F Coupe at the 2014 North American International Motor Show in Detroit, which is based on the RC Coupe and is planning to debut a new compact crossover based on the LF-NX Concept, which was shown at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

There will be shortage in supply of the new Mercedes-Benz CLA sedan until the second quarter of 2014 as the model remains very popular. "Yeah, inventory is tight," remarked Mercedes-Benz USA chief executive Steve Cannon, adding that sales in 2013 exceeded expectations. "The fact that we sold faster than we expected is a very good sign," he said.

He remarked that dealers will get higher allocations as 2014 progresses, with the supply situation easing in the second quarter. Cannon said that the success of the CLA won't help US dealers get more CLA since production is tight around the world.

Mercedes rolled out the CLA in September 2013, with 14,113 sold at the close of in 2013. It is the first vehicle in a new segment of European compact luxury vehicles that will be joined by the Audi A3 sedan in April, the Mercedes GLA crossover in September and the BMW Active Tourer crossover in 2015.

Mercedes-Benz, as a luxury carmaker, typically prices its products at a premium. That could be the reason why its new entry-level CLA sedan front-wheel-drive, which is offered at less than $30,000, excluding destination charges, has raised some differing remarks among reviewers. With its low price and front-wheel-drive configuration, reviewers have voiced their remarks on whether the CLA sedan is really a Mercedes.

For instance, Edmunds.com said that even among rwd Mercedes owners, it is hard to tell if the 2014 Mercedes CLA250 is front-wheel drive, since it accelerates and steers with the precision of more elite models.

Consumer Reports came up with a harsher review, saying the CLA250 is not a smooth-riding Mercedes-Benz vehicle. It said that CLA250 car “feels brittle on some impacts,” making the ride stiff. It added that the CLA has sacrificed cabin quietness.

Infiniti is mulling a sporty four-door coupe flagship derived from the Porsche Panamera, according to Andy Palmer, Nissan's executive vice president responsible for global future products. The coupe will bear a fastback roofline that styling could take a cue from the Infiniti Essence concept created by Nissan design chief Shiro Nakamura.

The sporty four-door coupe flagship is not expected before 2017 and is part of Infiniti's grand plan to transform into a major global luxury brand by the end of the decade. Infiniti is planning to avoid a head-on collision with more established European luxury carmakers by focusing on a mix of sporty-focused sedan, coupe and crossover models -- each powered by hybrid powertrains.

Palmer said that Infiniti “won't do a Mercedes-Benz S-Class or that type of car," since they have had that before. He remarked that Infiniti wants an appealing and different flagship car.
