New Audi A5 Sportback G-Tron in special wrap seen at 2017 Worthersee Meeting

The largest gathering of Volkswagen and Audi cars in Europe is underway, and the German premium carmaker is displaying the third model of its G-Tron range at the 2017 Worthersee Meeting wrapped in special finish and with apparent aesthetic tweaks.

Audi unveiled the production version of the new Audi A5 Sportback G-Tron at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in March. Before the model’s eventual introduction to the market in early summer, Audi is making sure that the new G-Tron car gains more attention from the public by showcasing a one-off variant at the Worthersee Meeting.

The A5 Sportback G-Tron at Worthersee sports a customized two-tone exterior to make it more appealing. However, it isn’t a fully modified unit, unlike the VW GTI First Decade concept that is also being displayed at the event. Around two-thirds – starting from the front end -- of the exterior of this one-off A5 Sportback G-Tron is wrapped in dark grey finish. It then blends with a honeycomb blue finish on the rear side doors. This finish completely dominates the rear end of the one-off A5 Sportback G-Tron.

Environment-friendly Audi A3 Sportback G-Tron introduced in Germany

Audi will soon be launching the A3 Sportback g-tron developed to enable long-distance mobility that is also environment friendly. The A3 Sportback g-tron is powered by a 110 PS 1.4-litre TFSI engine that can be operated in two ways: through ultra-clean Audi e-gas produced using green electricity; or through compressed natural gas. Both are readily available in Germany.

In Audi e-gas mode, the g-tron entirely does not emit carbon dioxide, which means mobility can be achieved without harming the environment. Audi e-gas is a synthetic methane produced at the Audi e-gas facility in Werlte, Germany.  Green electricity is used in the production of Audi e-gas, and the generation process binds as much carbon dioxide as is released when the g-tron is driven using gas.

On average, the Audi A3 g-tron consumes just between 3.2 and 3.3 kilograms of gas per 100 kilometers, with fuel costing at around EUR3.50 per 100 kilometers.

2013 Geneva Motor Show: Audi debuts the A3 Sportback G-Tron

Audi will be bringing a gas-powered A3 to the Geneva Motor Show. The A3 Sportback g-tron was built together with Audi's new e-gas plant in Werlte, which generates carbon-neutral gas from renewable electricity. The powertrain of the g-tron is composed of two gas tanks and a regular internal combustion engine.

These tanks are able to store e-gas that’s coming from Audi, or regular Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). The Audi's tanks are stored under the boot floor and are capable of holding 7kg of gas each, stored at as much as 200bar. Audi is claiming that the g-tron has a fuel consumption rating on gas of 3.5kg/100 km, offering a gas-only range of 400km (242 miles). When using gas, it means that when full, every fuel tank weighs 27kg lower than a traditional petrol or diesel fuel tank.

The tanks are very strong and light, built from a polyamide polymer and strengthened with carbonfibre-reinforced polymer. When running on gas, the efficiency of the A3 g-tron is boosted by an electronic pressure regulator. It permits low-pressure gas to be combusted in low-speed driving, while at the same time, it permits it to flow at high pressure when higher performance is needed. The petrol engine in the A3 g-tron is based on the 1.4 TFSI that’s in the A3 range and has an output of 108bhp and 147lb ft. According to Audi, the concept is bivalent.
