Emission issues now affecting Mercedes-Benz E350d models, sales stopped in Germany

Emissions, emissions, emissions. We have been hearing a lot about this issue lately, and we know that automakers dread it too, as it is the worst thing that could happen right now for their business.

This time, the victim of emissions would be Mercedes-Benz and now they have to halt the production of their E350d in Germany. This is because they have to implement some changes to the 3.0 liter V6 turbodiesel so it produces less NOx emissions. The company's plan is too fit in a selective catalytic reduction system with more surface area, maximizing the company's AdBlue after-treatment fluid, but Mercedes will still inject the same amount of AdBlue in the system.

Autocar said that it will take a few weeks for Mercedes to do the engine tweaks. Currently, the 3.0 liter V6 produces 258 horsepower (192 kilowatts) and 457 pound feet (620 Newton metres) of torque. The company makes it clear that the only affected engines are the ones on sale in the market since May.

2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 Estate Edition 1 comes with record-breaking price of 139,980 euros

In time for the official market launch of the new generation E63 and E63 S models, pricing for Mercedes-AMG’s E63 Estate Edition 1 has also been announced in Germany. Let’s just say the equivalent price in US dollars comes at approximately $152,575.

For starters, the standard E63 wagon boasts a 0-62 acceleration under 3.6 seconds and a top speed reaching 155mph (250 kilometers per hour). With 571hp (420kW) and 553 lb-ft (750Nm) of torque under the hood, the entry level variant can be had for the price of 112,907 euros. Clearly there’s nothing “ordinary” about its performance.

Next, the E63 S comes with a starting price of € 124,688. With its mightier engine, the Mercedes E63 S can deliver a much more powerful 612hp (450kW) and 627 lb-ft (850Nm) torque than the standard version. Even more impressive is the output that has enough punch to push the vehicle by tenth of a second before topping off at 155mph (250kph).

Following its global debut at the 2017 North American International Auto Show (2017 Detroit Auto Show) in January and its European unveiling at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show this month, the new Mercedes-Benz is now finally available to order, at least in its home market Germany. In fact, interested clients could now go Mercedes’ Web site and configure their own E Class according to their tastes and preferences.

As to how much the new Mercedes-Benz E Class Coupe would cost, the German premium carmaker has already provided a cheat list on the starting prices on each of the four models available at launch: the E200, the E220d, the E300, and the E400 4Matic. For those who have made their orders, they could expect to take deliveries of the latest iteration of the E Class Coupe as early as spring 2017.

The entry-level E200 derives its power from a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine that could deliver up to 184 hp (135 kW) of output and up to 221 lb.-ft. (300 Nm) of torque. This amount of power is enough to send the Mercedes E200 Coupe sprinting from nil to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds and achieving a top speed of 240 km/h. The Mercedes E200 Coupe is available in Germany at a starting price of EUR49,051.80 (including VAT).

Mercedes-Benz unveiled the 2018 E Class Coupe (sold as 2017MY in Germany) at the 2017 North American International Auto Show (or 2017 Detroit Auto Show). Reports had been saying that Mercedes will commence sales of the E Class coupe in the first or second quarter of 2017. However, it turns out that Mercedes is already selling the 2018 E Class Coupe in its home market, Germany.

Those residing in Germany could now place their orders for the 2018 Mercedes E Class Coupe and get their premium two-door cars as early as March 2017. Buyers could have their own 2018 E Class at a starting price of €41,220 ($42,980) -- excluding taxes – for the entry-level E200.

2018 2-door E Class coupe is considered to be Mercedes’ answer to the BMW 4 Series and the Audi A5. It is heavily influenced by Mercedes’ “sensual purity” design, considering its fuller body, smoother shape and sloping roofline. The new E Class coupe is underpinned by Mercedes’ latest modular rear architecture (MRA platform). In terms of dimensions, the new E-Class coupe measures 4,827 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width and 1,430 mm in height – making it 141 mm longer, 50 mm wider and 25 mm taller than the C-Class coupe. These measurements give rise to sleek yet elegant coupe proportions typical of Mercedes. Its front end is defined by a long hood with power domes, a low-positioned sport grille and central star, and an elongated greenhouse. Notable is the absence of a B pillar, paving way to four frameless side windows.

The race for delivering street-wise autonomous vehicles is heating up as Mercedes-Benz recently received permission from the German government to conduct on-the-road tests of its experimental units.

This isn’t the first time that Mercedes-Benz was granted permission to test its autonomous vehicles. However, the latest approval involves the next generation of the carmaker’s autonomous prototypes, now installed with its newest software dubbed as Daimler Autonomous Vehicle Operating System (DAVOS). These autonomous prototypes are derived from the Mercedes-Benz V-Class (Viano) mid-size passenger van. These test vehicles are fitted with advanced Lidar sensors to allow the DAVOS software to do its work. DAVOS employs a graphic processor and deep-learning technologies to perform as expected.

With these technical specs, these new autonomous prototypes should be able to theoretically operate by themselves. However, two specially trained drivers will be on board each test car for safety reasons. By having these prototypes deployed in real-world conditions, Mercedes engineers would be able to fine-tune the DAVOS software.

With the market of premium electric crossover continuing to expand, Mercedes-Benz revealed that it will soon be joining this segment as it had started the development of the production version for the Generation EQ Concept. Aimed to be released by the end of this decade, the task of building this version falls largely on the hands of its facility located in Bremen, Germany. Once released, Mercedes-Benz added that it will be the first of 10 electric models to be unveiled by 2025.

Since the actual production version of the company’s Generation EQ is more likely years away from being released, it comes as no surprise that Mercedes-Benz remains to be mum on some of the details behind it. The only thing that the company confirmed for now is that the upcoming model is likely to retain the crossover coupe styling of the concept car. However, Mercedes-Benz did promise that the range would likely reach 311 miles (500 km). This is assumed, of course, to be under the European testing cycle.

Still, that range is not likely to make this model the leader in its segment. The Tesla Model X P100D for instance, which is available already on the European market, can go, according to the Europe testing cycle, as far as 337 miles (542 km). Considering how fast Tesla is when it comes to the development of EVs, it is possible that once the Generation EQ’s production version hits the market, Tesla’s CUV could have a range even farther than what has already been mentioned.

On December 3, 2013, Mercedes-Benz commenced selling cars through the Internet for the first time via its dealership in Hamburg, Germany. The program allows customers to choose from over 70 pre-configured vehicles in a pilot test of direct online sales. The models cover the A-Class hatchback, CLA four-door coupe and CLS Shooting Brake wagon and will be offered in a package that includes lease, insurance and maintenance.

Andrea Finkbeiner-Mueller, head of dealer development and customer satisfaction for Mercedes, remarked that direct online sales is “a new field." Carmakers are increasingly trying to sell their vehicles directly online. Fellow German carmaker is also using the Web to sell the i3 electric car.

This also reflects the growing challenge posed by auto Web sites such as Mobile.de against traditional dealerships. Through online sales, Mercedes is attempting to entice customers who haven't bought a Mercedes before, according to Finkbeiner-Mueller.

Germany is facing possible action from the European Commission over Daimler's refusal to phase out a banned air conditioning coolant -- R134a -- from its new cars. France has blocked registrations of some new Mercedes-Benz models that contain the banned refrigerant, the executive arm of the European Union has confirmed -- the latest sign of growing tension between Germany and other EU members over the direction of auto industry policy and regulation.

Commission spokesman Carlo Corazza told Reuters that officials are probing Daimler's Germany-backed refusal to heed an EU directive banning R134a.

Corazza said that if Germany is confirmed to have violated the ban, the EC "may take necessary action including, where appropriate, infringement procedures." Daimler has disclosed that France is blocking new registrations of its Mercedes-Benz SL sports car and A-class and B-class compacts, which account over half of the brand's sales in the country.

Even if the demand in Europe for cars has plunged, record sales are likely to be posted by BMW, Volkswagen Group and Mercedes-Benz. The automakers can credit part of this success to Deutsche Telekom AG, which is the largest phone company in Germany. The company has about 38,000 vehicles in its domestic country, which means that there’s one vehicle for every two employees.

Deutsche Telecom is one of several corporate car buyers that took advantage of tax breaks that have supported the auto market. KBA, the motor vehicle office in the country, said that with the weakening of private demand, cars purchased by companies to be used by employees made up for 32% of German auto sales last year. This is about 27% higher than in 2010.

Due to the demand from corporate fleets, sales in Europe's largest auto market were kept relatively steady, falling 2.9% last year even if the demand in Europe fell to its lowest level in nearly two decades.

Carmakers doing business in Germany are increasing customer incentives in order to bring in more buyers to their products, prompted by the current economic slump in the European country. German premium carmaker Mercedes-Benz has been forced to increase incentives to a two-year high. It is now offering customers a EUR3,000 ($3,900) trade-in incentive just to boost vehicle sales.

The incentive equals the discounts being offered by French carmaker Renault for the Megane compact. On the other hand, price discounts at General Motors Co.\'s Opel unit and Ford Motor Co. now exceed EUR3,500 on compact cars. According to trade publication Autohaus PulsSchlag, German discounts on new vehicles soared to an average 12.2 percent in September, the highest since 2010.

The rise in incentives, however, has so far failed to translate into increase in sales, as carmakers in the country suffered an 11 percent car-sales drop in September 2012.

J.D. Power and Associates has given top honors to Mercedes-Benz for vehicle ownership satisfaction, the first non-Japanese carmaker to have achieved this. In the study between 2002 and 2009, the top award has gone to Toyota, Honda or Daihatsu. The 2010 study, which was published on June 24, revealed that Mercedes won by earning 838 out of 1,000 points.

It did exceptionally well in two key measures: vehicle quality and reliability, and vehicle appeal. The two other factors for rating the brand are ownership costs and service satisfaction.

In a statement, Martin Volk, senior research manager at J.D. Power and Associates, said that being top-ranked "requires an in-depth understanding of customer expectations and how to implement targeted improvement measures aimed at minimizing deficiencies in terms of the product and dealer service."

Mercedes-AMG won't be so silent about its performance aspirations as the high-performance arm of Mercedes-Benz unveiled another hardcore model at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. This time around, the performance division is giving more oomph to the new generation of the Mercedes GLE by taking the veil off the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+.
