BMW starts production of new M5 (F90) at its Dingolfing, Bavaria plant

BMW recently announced that the long awaited 2018 BMW M5 (F90) finally goes into production. The M5 is also known as the German automaker’s most powerful production high performance sedan in history. We saw it a couple of months ago at the Frankfurt Motor Show when it made it public reveal.

Apart from being the most powerful production vehicle by BMW, it was announced to be the most expensive M5 ever, earlier this week with a starting price of $102,600, plus an extra $995 destination and handling fee. That makes it $8,500 more expensive than the outgoing model. After months of waiting, BMW confirmed that the 2018 M5’s mass production has started at BMW’s Dingolfing plant in Southern Bavaria.

Without a doubt, the very first batch of BMW M5s will be delivered to customers in Europe when it first rolls off the line. But United States customers should not take too long until they get their hands on the F90 generation of the sedan. If everything goes as planned during the production process, deliveries should begin by March 2018 to countries including Germany, United Kingdom and the United States. BMW also plans to beat the previous generation’s production record of about 20,000 units.

Mercedes-Benz EQ electric car confirmed, more models to be unveiled by 2025

With the market of premium electric crossover continuing to expand, Mercedes-Benz revealed that it will soon be joining this segment as it had started the development of the production version for the Generation EQ Concept. Aimed to be released by the end of this decade, the task of building this version falls largely on the hands of its facility located in Bremen, Germany. Once released, Mercedes-Benz added that it will be the first of 10 electric models to be unveiled by 2025.

Since the actual production version of the company’s Generation EQ is more likely years away from being released, it comes as no surprise that Mercedes-Benz remains to be mum on some of the details behind it. The only thing that the company confirmed for now is that the upcoming model is likely to retain the crossover coupe styling of the concept car. However, Mercedes-Benz did promise that the range would likely reach 311 miles (500 km). This is assumed, of course, to be under the European testing cycle.

Still, that range is not likely to make this model the leader in its segment. The Tesla Model X P100D for instance, which is available already on the European market, can go, according to the Europe testing cycle, as far as 337 miles (542 km). Considering how fast Tesla is when it comes to the development of EVs, it is possible that once the Generation EQ’s production version hits the market, Tesla’s CUV could have a range even farther than what has already been mentioned.

Ford will halt Fiesta production in Germany for 11 days in October and November

After stopping B-Max production at its Romanian plant earlier this month, Ford also announced that it will cut production of the Fiesta in the fourth quarter of this year, at its plant in Cologne, Germany. Production will be stopped 11 days in October and November due to the fact that the demand on the European market slowed down in the second half of 2014.

Currently, the Fiesta is company’s best-seller in Europe and according to JATO Dynamics, Ford sold over 190,000 units in the first seven months of this year compared to 175,000 vehicles sold in the same period back in 2013.

In order to boost sales in Germany, Ford said that it will apply subsidies under the Kurzarbeit or short-work program because 4,000 workers will be affected by the production cut.

Ford’s Cologne, Germany plant is still sole maker of next-generation Fiesta

Ford will still build the next generation Fiesta in Germany following an agreement with the works council. Ford inked an agreement that will cut the number of shifts from three to two at its vehicle assembly while increasing the frequency of shifts at its engine production to three.

While the agreement -- which covers all of Ford’s 24,000 Ford employees in Germany – entails a vow not to cut jobs, the carmaker could reap up to $400 million in savings on production costs from 2017 through 2021.

Stephen Odell, Ford’s head of Europe, said in a statement that the production of the Fiesta in Cologne underscores the carmaker’s commitment to invest in competitive vehicle production in Germany.

FoMoCo has hiked output of the Ford Fiesta at its Cologne site in Germany to meet growing demand for the subcompact. The daily output for the Fiesta is now 1,850 units, up from 1,650 before the start of 2014. The carmaker has also six extra weekend shifts since February. The carmaker employs 4000 workers to build the Fiesta at the site.

Ford sold 4-percent less Fiesta in Europe in 2013 to just 292,640, but the subcompact remained the best-selling model in its segment, according to data from JATO Dynamics. Ford started building the Fiesta in 1976, with the model now in its seventh generation. Ford expects Fiesta production to top the 16-million mark this month.

In March, Automobilwoche reported that Ford was considering shifting production of the next-generation Fiesta to another site in Europe.

Porsche is spending more money to expand its production capacity at its sites in Stuttgart and Leipzig, Germany. The sports car maker plans to invest over EUR700 million ($923.8 million) alone at its main Stuttgart site in the next five years, according to chief executive Matthias Mueller. Porsche has also announced investments of around EUR500 million to expand its Leipzig site.

The sports car maker is targeting to sell over 200,000 vehicles annually in 2015 or 2016 -- three years earlier than planned. Mueller said that the carmaker is planning to decide on a new model line in 2014. Porsche logged a five-percent surge in sales in August to 11,481 cars, and a 16-percent hike in deliveries in the first eight months of 2013.

The German sports carmaker is expected to top 150,000 deliveries in full-year 2013, higher than its 143,000 vehicle sales in 2012. Porsche posted EUR2.4 billion operating profit in 2012. Porsche’s parent, Volkswagen, managed to offset lower demand for its vehicle in Europe thanks to stronger earnings performance of its luxury brands. Porsche accounted for EUR1.29 billion of VW’s EUR5.78 billion operating profit in the first half of 2013.

Ford has commenced the production of the new Ford Fiesta ST at the Cologne plant in Germany. Developed by Ford Team RS, the European unit of Ford’s Global Performance Vehicle group, the Fiesta ST for Europe is powered by a 1.6-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, allowing it to accelerate from zero to 62mph in 6.9 seconds – the first production Fiesta that accelerates to this pace in under 7 seconds – and to reach a top speed of 136.7 mph.

The engine also provides up to 182PS of power and up to 290Nm of torque, while consuming only a gallon of fuel per 48 miles of travel and emitting 138 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre cruised. The new Ford Fiesta ST now sports new steering, suspension and braking components as well as new configuration and tuning.

To make the driving experience more satisfying and securing, Ford installed onto the Fiesta ST an improved version of its Torque Vectoring Control system and a three-mode Electronic Stability Control system.

Because of the declining European market, Volkswagen is planning to have more temporary suspensions in Passat production in Germany in the upcoming weeks. VW said that it will stop the assembly lines at the Emden plant on February 8, February 15, February 22 and March 1.

VW spokesman Georg Goericke said the company will continue to closely monitor the market situation in Europe. He declined to say if the automaker was preparing for another series of interruptions in March and April.

VW produces around 1,200 units a day at Emden, where workers build the Passat sedan, the Passat wagon and the CC coupe. VW has already stopped the output there from December 17 to 21, 2012.

Opel is considering shifting some production of its Astra compact car to Poland from one of its plants in Germany, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reports, citing source privy to the works council and labor unions. According to the report, Opel is planning to shift an annual production of 10,000 Astra cars from its Ruesselsheim factory in Germany to Gliwice site in southern Poland.

Opel currently builds 30,000 Astra cars annually, as well as the Insignia mid-sized model, Ruesselsheim. With the transfer, Opel would effectively reduce the capacity of the Ruesselsheim plant to 20,000 cars annually. Opel is under heavy pressure from parent General Motors Co. to reduce costs and excess capacity to cope with falling sales and massive losses in Europe.

GM’s European units, which consist of the Opel and Vauxhall brands, posted $747 million in losses before interest and tax in 2011. In the first quarter, Opel/Vauxhall car sales dipped 15.8 percent to 227,590 in the countries that are members of the European Union and the European Free Trade Association, according to industry body ACEA.

Mercedes-Benz, owned by Daimler AG, is aiming to manufacture 988,110 SUVs and cars next year in its three facilities in Germany, internal documents obtained by Automotive News Europe have revealed. A spokesperson of Daimler refused to comment on the targets. The documents also disclosed that the German factories would comprise 65 percent of Daimler's worldwide passenger car production in 2012.

The total output target of Daimler for 2012 is 1.52 million units, including Smart as well as Maybach, which will be phased out soon. The largest Mercedes plant is in Sindelfingen, near Stuttgart. It is anticipated to produce 460,860 cars in 2012, the internal documents show. Meanwhile, output at its Bremen facility is estimated to be 327,460 vehicles.

Moreover, the automaker's factory in Rastatt is predicted to create 199,790 units. Outside of Germany, the largest Mercedes facility is in Vance, Alabama, USA. It is estimated to produce 185,900 vehicles next year, an increase of 30 percent on its projected total of 143,000 in 2011. In 2010, the automaker manufactured 125,000 units in Vance.

Germany-based vehicle manufacturers are adding production shifts in order to meet the demands of the market, an indication that a sharp growth in auto sales seen in the first few months of the year is expected to continue.

According to a spokesperson for Volkswagen AG, which is the largest automaker in Europe, the company is studying to keep one production line running at its main factory in Wolfsburg during its traditional summer shutdown on a voluntary basis in order for the company to continue delivering its vehicles. On the other hand, BMW and the luxury vehicle unit of VW Group, Audi, are operating at high capacity levels.

A representative for Audi disclosed that the company is adding some production shifts to shorten delivery times. BMW is planning to do the same, according to its spokesperson.

There are plans for BMW AG to manufacture the next generation Mini in Germany and its factory in Oxford , England . With the strong growth of the Mini brand, BMW is considering adding another production site. Frank-Peter Arndt, BMW's head of car production, said that it's likely a German factory will be responsible for the production of Mini-based models.

It has also been reported that BMW will build Minis at its factory in Regensburg , where the automaker produces models such as the 1-Series and 3-Series. 

It is believed that BMW is likely to add capacity in Germany rather than in Oxford because of currency exchange rates and other costs that will make it more competitive. When the new Minis are launched, it is believed that the Oxford plant will be unable to meet demand.

Because of the volcanic ash cloud over Europe, production at three BMW AG factories in Germany will be temporarily halted due to a supply shortage of interior and electronic parts.

These parts are typically delivered by air. The world's largest maker of luxury cars has ordered production to stop at its Dingolfing plant, which makes the 5- and 7-series vehicles, according to Mathias Schmidt, a BMW spokesman. 

Production has also been stopped at the Munich plant, which produces the 3 series; and at the Regensburg facility, which makes the 1 series and Z4 models.

It's apparent that BMW is intent on following through with its plan to build a "Megacity" electric vehicle, with its introduction of the Mini E and the 1-Series Active E Concept.

BMW has announced that the Megacity, also known as the car of the future, will be built in Leipzig, Germany. Norbert Reithofer, BMW's chairman, said that the BMW Group will have high-tech innovations from Bavaria. 

Reithofer said that the reason for choosing the Germany facility is that it offers a tried and tested production network and there are high levels of education and outstanding competencies available at its disposal.

After confirming in 2017 that its midsize pickup would be coming back to the United States, Ford took the wraps off the 2019 Ranger early last year. It featured an all-new design especially made for the US, and is a bit different from the Rangers sold overseas. Now, Ford is finally commencing the production of the 2019 Ranger at its newly transformed Michigan Assembly Plant in Detroit.

To mark the kickoff of the production of the new Ford Ranger, the carmaker had special celebrations at its Michigan Assembly Plant. The celebrations essentially mark the rebirth of the Ranger, which is slated to return to the US early 2019 following an eight-year hiatus. Likewise, the celebrations mark the rebirth of the plant that has been a witness to the ups and downs of the American auto industry in the past six decades.

Invited in the celebrations aren’t just leaders from Ford, but also from United Auto Workers. A large of number of the plant’s workforce – numbering more than 3,000 employees – was also present. These employees, as well as media members and others, were given an opportunity to ride in the new Ford Ranger a custom-built, off-road course in the plant’s parking lot.

SEAT SA is commencing production of an all-new car at its Martorell facilities in Spain. However, its plant won't be assembling a new SEAT car. The Spanish carmaker is now assembling the next generation of Audi’s small city car – the new 2019 Audi A1.

The sight of SEAT producing Audi vehicles isn't surprising as both carmakers are members of the larger Volkswagen Group. In addition, the A1 isn't the Audi vehicle produced at SEAT’s Martorrel site. In the middle of 2011, the VW Group assigned the SEAT facility to produce the Audi Q3 luxury subcompact crossover. Since then until July 2018, the Martorrel site had been producing the previous generation of the Audi Q3 and total Spanish production of the subcompact crossover reached nearly 800,000 units.

When the second generation of the Audi Q3 was unveiled, it was decided that the production of the subcompact crossover will be moved from Martorell to the Gyor facilities in Hungary. On the other hand, the previous generation of the A1 was assembled in Brussels. The idle manufacturing capacity at Martorrel left by the Audi Q3 might have prompted the VW Group to transfer the production of the second generation from Brussels to Martorell.

When Ford unveiled its new Ford GT nearly four years ago at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, the supercar was received very well even through the US carmaker only disclosed a few details. When the company started to produce the Ford GT, one thing was very apparent – the demand for the supercar greatly outstrips the supply. Two years into the supercar’s production, Ford is building more units than previously earmarked.

Even before it started production of the Ford GT, the US carmaker had said only 1,000 units of the supercar will be built. Ford had set the annual production pace for the Ford GT at 250 units every year. This means that supercar would have a production run that would last for around four years.

But when the US carmaker started accepting orders for the Ford GT, the total number of applicants quickly grew to more than 6,500. This number was just for the 2016 iteration of the supercar. Unfortunately, Ford can only accommodate 1,000 of the applicants, which means that the Ford GT is practically sold out.

The new Porsche Taycan is considered as revolutionary at the German sports car maker as the upcoming model is its first all-electric vehicle. Nonetheless, the new Taycan four-door EV will also be the starting point of a new revolution in the company. Porsche is currently building its conventionally powered vehicles, including its 911 sports car, using the traditional principle of an assembly line. Lutz Meschke, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board and Member of the Board responsible for Finance and IT at Porsche, remarked that starting 2025, more than 50 percent of the Porsche models delivered are expected to be electrified. While this will require substantial investments in development, production, and staff training, Porsche believes that the carmaker will still be able to achieve a target profit margin of at least 15 percent.

By the start of the new decade, customers won't be able to buy a new Opel Adam. Opel Karl and Opel Cascada won't also be available. This is because Opel will stop selling the Adam and Karl city cars as well as the Cascada compact convertible starting 2020 as the carmaker shifts its focus and comply with future emissions regulations.

According to Opel, it will not replace the current iterations of the Adam, Karl and Cascada when they reach the end of their life cycles. However, the Adam, Karl and Cascada will still be sold until the end of 2019. That gives customers planning to acquire any of these to-be-ditched models more than a year to make their plans a reality. Opel said the decision was meant to help the carmaker comply with future carbon dioxide emissions guidelines and to help it shift its focus to high volume segments.

This decision to discontinue the Adam, Karl and Cascada forms part of greater scheme at Opel -- the PACE! Plan. This PACE! Plan is essentially a new product offensive meant to meet the needs of customers while ensuring compliance with the stiff carbon dioxide guidelines that will take effect in 2020.

The Chevrolet City Express small cargo van has been in the market since 2014 (2015 model year). Designed for customers seeking a small fuel-efficient, cargo vehicle, the City Express has silently reached the end of the road, as General Motors has already stopped taking orders and building of this small work van.

While it is now too late for the Chevrolet City Express to make a sales comeback, GM was literally silent about the fate of Chevy’s small cargo van. According to a report by the Automotive News citing a spokesman from GM, dealers were informed of plans to drop the City Express as early as Summer 2017. Chevrolet received orders for the small cargo van only until September 2017, with the production of the last units of the 2018 City Express officially ended in February 2018.

In 2013, GM and Nissan Motors inked an agreement for the Japanese carmaker to build a small cargo van – the Chevrolet City Express – as based on the Nissan NV200. The Nissan NV200 is a compact yet spacious commercial boasts of low cost of ownership. Designed as both a passenger and a commercial vehicle, the Nissan NV200 is being sold in several markets around the world, including in the United States and Canada.
