VW T6 Multivan sales are halted in Germany due to high nitrogen oxide emissions

It has only been a few days since Oliver Schmidt, former Volkswagen executive, was handed a maximum possible sentence by US District Judge Sean Cox. He will have to spend seven years in prison and pay a fine of $400,000. And on December 8, Volkswagen has again been put on the spot. The German automaker urgently had to stop their sales of the T6 Multivan in Germany because it was discovered that the van emits way more nitrogen oxide than what is allowed by local emissions limits.

Der Spiegel magazine said that the findings have already been reported to the KBA, Germany’s motor transport authority. This had been quoted by Automotive News.

What happened is that Volkswagen set the “adjustment factor” too low when they submitted documents to the KBA to have the T6 Multivan’s sales approved, says the German publication. To defend their name, a Volkswagen spokesperson from the commercial vehicle division said that incorrect engine management software is ruled out as a possible reason for these uncertainties.

BMW starts production of new M5 (F90) at its Dingolfing, Bavaria plant

BMW recently announced that the long awaited 2018 BMW M5 (F90) finally goes into production. The M5 is also known as the German automaker’s most powerful production high performance sedan in history. We saw it a couple of months ago at the Frankfurt Motor Show when it made it public reveal.

Apart from being the most powerful production vehicle by BMW, it was announced to be the most expensive M5 ever, earlier this week with a starting price of $102,600, plus an extra $995 destination and handling fee. That makes it $8,500 more expensive than the outgoing model. After months of waiting, BMW confirmed that the 2018 M5’s mass production has started at BMW’s Dingolfing plant in Southern Bavaria.

Without a doubt, the very first batch of BMW M5s will be delivered to customers in Europe when it first rolls off the line. But United States customers should not take too long until they get their hands on the F90 generation of the sedan. If everything goes as planned during the production process, deliveries should begin by March 2018 to countries including Germany, United Kingdom and the United States. BMW also plans to beat the previous generation’s production record of about 20,000 units.

Audi launches 24/7 digital service stations in Germany

Good news for current and future Audi owners, as taking your car to the dealership for its regular maintenance won’t mean that you have to take a day off from work anymore. The automaker has just launched a new 24/7 digital service station that they named the Audi Service Station. You are probably wondering how this works. Basically, customers will simply have to drop off their cars for service and pick them up anytime they are free.

Okay, that may not sound new to you as some automakers already provide after-hours drop off box for keys. Simultaneously, they accept payment over the phone and lock keys in the car when the service is done. So you can pick up your car as long as you have an extra key fob.

But with Audi’s Service Station, it is much more convenient. That is because the service station is not just about servicing the cars. It’s also perfect when you require a loaner car, or when you drop by the service station which has a long queue on your lunch break. How does it work? The new service center is like a huge vending machine or an ATM that acts like a computerized service advisor.

After a somewhat successful fray into the automotive market in China, the resurrected German automobile brand Borgward is finally heading to Europe, bringing along with it the Borgward BX7 sports utility vehicle.

Borgward’s first stop is Germany, where it plans to start sales of its BX7 SUV in the first quarter of 2018. Commencing sales in Germany would signal its homecoming in Europe. The company was founded in 1929 by Carl Borgward. However, Borgward ceased to exist in 1961 when it was forced into liquidation by its creditors. In 2008, the company was revived by the founder’s grandson, Christian Borgward, with some investment from China. The carmaker unveiled its first car since 1961 – the BX7 and its sporty TS version – at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Since then, Borgward has concentrated its sales efforts in China. Now, the carmaker is fully intent into re-launching the brand in Europe, starting with Germany. As disclosed to Auto Express by Tom Anliker, Borgward’s Vice President for marketing, the Borgward BX7 is just the first step of the European re-launch, and it will be followed by its smaller sibling –a right-hand drive version of the BX-5 compact SUV. The company also plans to offer the Borgward BX5 in the United Kingdom.

Emissions, emissions, emissions. We have been hearing a lot about this issue lately, and we know that automakers dread it too, as it is the worst thing that could happen right now for their business.

This time, the victim of emissions would be Mercedes-Benz and now they have to halt the production of their E350d in Germany. This is because they have to implement some changes to the 3.0 liter V6 turbodiesel so it produces less NOx emissions. The company's plan is too fit in a selective catalytic reduction system with more surface area, maximizing the company's AdBlue after-treatment fluid, but Mercedes will still inject the same amount of AdBlue in the system.

Autocar said that it will take a few weeks for Mercedes to do the engine tweaks. Currently, the 3.0 liter V6 produces 258 horsepower (192 kilowatts) and 457 pound feet (620 Newton metres) of torque. The company makes it clear that the only affected engines are the ones on sale in the market since May.

Incentives of up to EUR10,000 can be had by Audi customers who are willing to trade-in their older diesel vehicles to new Audi units that are compliant with the Euro 6 standard. This comes as Audi offers enticing trade-in incentives to clients owning diesel cars compliant only with emission standards Euro 1 through Euro 4.

Audi’s delicious trade-in bonuses come as the premium carmaker, along with other German carmakers, agreed to a series of environmental measures with the government of Germany, which are all aimed at reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from diesel vehicles by the end of 2018.These German carmakers were also urged to employ self-financed competitive measures to provide incentives for the shift from pre-Euro-5 diesel vehicles. As for Audi, its program was created to help accelerate the replacement of older diesel vehicles with modern and more eco-friendly cars.

In compliance with recent National Diesel Forum, Audi is offering incentives to all drivers of diesel cars with the emission standards Euro 1 through Euro 4, regardless of the model or brand, as long as the customer trades in for an Audi vehicle. Attractive conditions are also being offered for customers who are changing over to a late-model used Audi. Financed by Audi AG, these incentives are granted directly through the Audi dealerships, with customers not needing to make separate applications. The incentive offer is only available through December 31, 2017.

People who want to learn more about the automotive industry and its history can always head out to Germany. This is because not only is it where many of the world’s leading auto brands are based, but it is also where one can visit the best when it comes to museums decided to the automotive world.

With the opening of the Mazda Classic Car Museum by Auto Frey, it adds a new reason to visit Germany. Dedicated mainly to the Japanese automaker, it is also the first such collection of models to be displayed outside Japan. The museum is in Augsburg, Bavaria, and is seen as an excellent location as it is between Munich and Stuttgart. For the uninitiated, Munich is currently where BMW is headquartered with Stuttgart serving as the home not only of Porsche but even for Mercedes.

In addition, the location of the museum is about four hours from Oberursel, Augsburg, which is the same area where Mazda’s Research & Development center is based. Oberursel is also where you can find Auto Frey, which not only sells Peugeots but is considered to be the largest Mazda dealer in Europe. Augsburg is also five hours away from Leverkusen, where the European headquarters of Mazda is located. For the museum itself, it was made possible through a joint venture entered into by Mazda and the family that owns Auto Frey. The latter in particular also loaned a number of models from its private collection to the museum.

Just a few days after Toyota released the 86 860 Special Edition (in the US) that didn’t quite live up to the crowd’s expectations, the company again introduced another “limited edition” car. I hope this one will be more of a crowd pleaser.

Now, let us talk about the GT86 Tiger and see what makes this one special. First off, the company mentioned that they will only be producing 30 cars in total, and will be exclusively sold in Germany. If you’re a serious car collector, you will want to get your hands on this extremely rare model. But first, let us tell you what you will be getting.

The exterior of the car can easily be spotted without a doubt. If being seen is your goal, this is for you. The car represents a fierce Bengal tiger - as it will come in a bold “Tiger Orange” paint with black stripes and some more black accents on the pillars, side mirror caps, and the rear wing, giving it a nice contrast with the bright orange base. Completing the overall look with a set of anthracite 17-inch alloy wheels, with Sachs sports dampers. The wheels are the only upgrade this limited model has over the standard one.

After its debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen is now taking orders for the Arteon in Germany---where price starts at 49,325 euros. In this case, the new five-seater coupe comes out more expensive than Passat’s Highline trim level with the same 280hp 2.0-liter TSI engine. What makes Arteon more special though is that it exudes a certain character of the Sport Coupe Concept GTE that was showcased in Geneva in the last couple of years.

For one, Volkswagen wishes to place the new Arteon in the same league as that of BMW’s 4-Series Grand Coupe. Standing at 56.2 inches tall with width up to 73.7 inches and 191.4 inches in length, the Arteon basically replaces the former Volkswagen Passat CC. Because of this, the Arteon now features a sleeker body style, a superior legroom and longer wheelbase with up to 563-liter space at the trunk. When the seats are completely folded, the cargo capacity boasts up to 1,557-liters.

Among its other features are Volkswagen’s latest 9.2inches infotainment system with gesture control, head-up display and all-digital instrument cluster. There is also the standard 6.5-inch display infotainment screen available for customers who are not into Discover Pro’s gesture control setup. The Arteon has also been equipped with the latest driver assistance technology including the new generation self-steering emergency assist as well as the new adaptive cruise control.

When it was announced in January, the Opel Crossland X was seen as an actual rival to the Renault Captur and the Peugeot 2008. Yet, the Opel Crossland X (Vauxhall Crossland X for its United Kingdom-bound version) shares its underpinnings with the Peugeot 2008, thanks to a collaboration agreement inked between Opel and the PSA Group in 2012.

In a twist of fate, the new Opel Crossland X will be a part of the PSA Group – a result of the impending acquisition of Opel/Vauxhall by the French carmaker from General Motors. PSA’s acquisition of Opel from GM was very big news, and thanks to that, a lot of attention has been given to the new model that would mark a new beginning for the would-be larger French company. Following the footsteps of its Opel siblings, the new Opel Crossland X is now bound to enter the sub-compact crossover market, and it is slightly cheaper than the Peugeot 2008. In fact, the new Opel Crossland X could now be availed in Germany at a starting price of €16,850 (RRP including VAT in Germany).

Interested customers may choose to power their Crossland X with any of the three 1.2-liter three-cylinder gasoline engines or any of the two 1.6-liter four-cylinder diesel mills. The three 1.2-liter three-cylinder gasoline engines include a unit delivering 60 kW (81 hp) of max output; a turbocharged mill providing 81 kW (110 hp) in output and 205 Nm of peak torque; and a turbocharged powerplant generating 96 kW (130 hp) of output and 230 Nm of torque.

Following its global debut at the 2017 North American International Auto Show (2017 Detroit Auto Show) in January and its European unveiling at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show this month, the new Mercedes-Benz is now finally available to order, at least in its home market Germany. In fact, interested clients could now go Mercedes’ Web site and configure their own E Class according to their tastes and preferences.

As to how much the new Mercedes-Benz E Class Coupe would cost, the German premium carmaker has already provided a cheat list on the starting prices on each of the four models available at launch: the E200, the E220d, the E300, and the E400 4Matic. For those who have made their orders, they could expect to take deliveries of the latest iteration of the E Class Coupe as early as spring 2017.

The entry-level E200 derives its power from a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine that could deliver up to 184 hp (135 kW) of output and up to 221 lb.-ft. (300 Nm) of torque. This amount of power is enough to send the Mercedes E200 Coupe sprinting from nil to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds and achieving a top speed of 240 km/h. The Mercedes E200 Coupe is available in Germany at a starting price of EUR49,051.80 (including VAT).

Mercedes-Benz unveiled the 2018 E Class Coupe (sold as 2017MY in Germany) at the 2017 North American International Auto Show (or 2017 Detroit Auto Show). Reports had been saying that Mercedes will commence sales of the E Class coupe in the first or second quarter of 2017. However, it turns out that Mercedes is already selling the 2018 E Class Coupe in its home market, Germany.

Those residing in Germany could now place their orders for the 2018 Mercedes E Class Coupe and get their premium two-door cars as early as March 2017. Buyers could have their own 2018 E Class at a starting price of €41,220 ($42,980) -- excluding taxes – for the entry-level E200.

2018 2-door E Class coupe is considered to be Mercedes’ answer to the BMW 4 Series and the Audi A5. It is heavily influenced by Mercedes’ “sensual purity” design, considering its fuller body, smoother shape and sloping roofline. The new E Class coupe is underpinned by Mercedes’ latest modular rear architecture (MRA platform). In terms of dimensions, the new E-Class coupe measures 4,827 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width and 1,430 mm in height – making it 141 mm longer, 50 mm wider and 25 mm taller than the C-Class coupe. These measurements give rise to sleek yet elegant coupe proportions typical of Mercedes. Its front end is defined by a long hood with power domes, a low-positioned sport grille and central star, and an elongated greenhouse. Notable is the absence of a B pillar, paving way to four frameless side windows.

Needless to say, the new BMW 1-Series Sedan is part of the premium carmaker’s offering. However, it should be noted that the so-called baby Bimmer is not being offered in Europe as it is an exclusive product targeting affluent customers in China.

Just recently, a new BMW 1-Series Sedan was seen being driven on roads in Europe. In particular, a reader of BimmerToday was able to take a good glimpse at a BMW 1 Series 120i sedan – in a prototype version without any disguise – in Munich, Germany.

BMW officially launched the BMW 1 Series Sedan at the Guangzhou Auto Show in China, hoping to take advantage of the propensity of more people in the event who may want to buy any of the premium compact cars. While the demand in China is still mainly for larger premium vehicles, especially those with spacious interiors, a new generation of car buyers is on the rise.

The race for delivering street-wise autonomous vehicles is heating up as Mercedes-Benz recently received permission from the German government to conduct on-the-road tests of its experimental units.

This isn’t the first time that Mercedes-Benz was granted permission to test its autonomous vehicles. However, the latest approval involves the next generation of the carmaker’s autonomous prototypes, now installed with its newest software dubbed as Daimler Autonomous Vehicle Operating System (DAVOS). These autonomous prototypes are derived from the Mercedes-Benz V-Class (Viano) mid-size passenger van. These test vehicles are fitted with advanced Lidar sensors to allow the DAVOS software to do its work. DAVOS employs a graphic processor and deep-learning technologies to perform as expected.

With these technical specs, these new autonomous prototypes should be able to theoretically operate by themselves. However, two specially trained drivers will be on board each test car for safety reasons. By having these prototypes deployed in real-world conditions, Mercedes engineers would be able to fine-tune the DAVOS software.

In a bid to acquire new production technologies and reduce per-vehicle manufacturing costs, Tesla has entered an agreement to purchase German firm Grohmann Engineering. Considered as one of the global leaders in highly automated manufacturing methods, Grohmann Engineering should allow Tesla to boost its manufacturing capability and know-how.

Tesla has acknowledged that only by having high-volume manufacturing sites will it be able to achieve a sustainable energy future. Such high-volume production facilities would enable Tesla to manufacture high-quality products with economies of scale, which means vehicles rolling off these sites would be more affordable and more accessible. In addition, Tesla considers such a high-volume factory as a product itself. Based in Prum, Germany, Grohmann Engineering would allow Tesla to get involved in high-volume highly automated manufacturing and make it possible for the California-based carmaker to realize its increased output target of 500,000 cars per year by 2018.

Tesla’s planned acquisition of Grohmann Engineering – led by founder and chief executive Klaus Grohmann -- includes the company’s development and production center in Germany, locations in Chandler, AZ, and Charlotte, NC, as well as a base in Shanghai, China. With the acquisition, Klaus Grohmann will also be brought into Tesla’s highly capable team of experts and leaders.

With the market of premium electric crossover continuing to expand, Mercedes-Benz revealed that it will soon be joining this segment as it had started the development of the production version for the Generation EQ Concept. Aimed to be released by the end of this decade, the task of building this version falls largely on the hands of its facility located in Bremen, Germany. Once released, Mercedes-Benz added that it will be the first of 10 electric models to be unveiled by 2025.

Since the actual production version of the company’s Generation EQ is more likely years away from being released, it comes as no surprise that Mercedes-Benz remains to be mum on some of the details behind it. The only thing that the company confirmed for now is that the upcoming model is likely to retain the crossover coupe styling of the concept car. However, Mercedes-Benz did promise that the range would likely reach 311 miles (500 km). This is assumed, of course, to be under the European testing cycle.

Still, that range is not likely to make this model the leader in its segment. The Tesla Model X P100D for instance, which is available already on the European market, can go, according to the Europe testing cycle, as far as 337 miles (542 km). Considering how fast Tesla is when it comes to the development of EVs, it is possible that once the Generation EQ’s production version hits the market, Tesla’s CUV could have a range even farther than what has already been mentioned.
