2019 GMC Sierra AT4 marks brand’s entry into off-road territory

Over the years, GMC has offered more sophisticated versions of General Motors pickups and SUVs. At the same time, GMC’s Denali sub brand has turned their vehicles a little more upscale. And now, Chevy has gotten a sub brand that is more focused on the offroading segment.

GMC actually invited everyone a bit early to New York so that we could see the 2019 Sierra AT4, before its debut. This is the off roading variant of the pickup. At the same time, the automaker announced that all models in their lineup will carry the “AT4” badge for two years. They also made it clear that the AT4 line will be aimed at the off road segment.

When looking at the Sierra AT4, it does look like it has some offroad credibility. It even gets a two-inch lift kit with Rancho monotube shocks, and it sits on a set of either 18- or 20-inch wheels. The Sierra AT4 is available in four wheel drive and is standard with a two speed transfer case and a locking rear differential.

2018 GMC Sierra All Mountain Concept climbs Vail ski mountain for winter season debut

The 2018 GMC Sierra 2500HD has arrived this week at the snowy mountains in Colorado for its winter long debut. GMC’s tracked Sierra Mountain Concept will be on display at the popular ski destination for the entire season in an effort to provide its audiences a better idea of what the off-roader has in store particularly when having to get through the icy cold mountain.

To get down to the nitty gritty of the concept, GMC has equipped the rig of the Sierra 2500HD with a set of Mattracks 150 Series. The tracks have been painted in GMC red to ensure it will be as attractive as the pickup’s body side graphics and other mountain-themed accessories. When viewing the vehicle at the front, you will notice the All-Mountain Concept is highlighted by the RIGID E-Series 30-inch light bar which is cleverly placed above the winch enough to conceal it. Likewise, a soft rollup tonneu by Advantage is placed at the back to cover the truck’s rear bed.

To conquer the snowy trails, the upgraded Denali 4WD Crew Cab has been equipped with several other accessories -- from Thule snowboard racks down to wheel well and underbody lights in LED. Even its passengers will find comfort with the cabin’s leather upholstery and cozy Bose stereo sound system when stuck in the cold. For sure, GMC has dressed up its pickup truck right for the season.

General Motors is recalling 303,000 of its 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks in the United States to repair a software glitch that could result to engine compartment fires. According to GM, eight fires have been confirmed, including three customer-owned vehicles, but that no injuries have been reported.

GM said the fires occurred in areas with "very cold weather." Four of the fires occurred in trucks at GM dealerships and one was in a GM-owned vehicle. The carmaker is advising owners to avoid leaving their trucks idle while unattended. The glitch was found in pickups powered by 4.3-liter and 5.3-liter V-8 engines. Trucks with the 6.2-liter V-8 engine, however, suffered no glitch.

According to the carmaker, it is contacting customers to alert them of the problem, which is indicated by a yellow "check engine light" and an "engine power reduced" message in the instrument panel.

The reception for General Motors’ next-generation pickup trucks – the redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra – was not as good as expected. Despite being regarded as great trucks -- even receiving critical acclamations -- the Silverado and the Sierra were selling badly, as dealers disclosed.

The reason: the pricing of these full-sized pickups failed to consider the current tagging trend in the auto industry – discounting. Heavy discount offers by rival pickup trucks from Ford and Ram continued to sap demand for GM’s offerings, which were launched in June 2013.

Sam Pilato, General Manager at Dimmitt Chevrolet in Clearwater, Fla., remarked to Automotive News that Silverados are "selling very poorly," with his dealership gaining its first 2014 Silverado sale only on Oct. 16. The dealership typically sells between 10 and 25 of full-sized pickups monthly.

General Motors has increased the prices of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-sized pickups, as their 2013 versions are now running out of supply. All body styles of the base 2014 light-duty pickups will see a sticker price increase of $1,500 on all body styles, according to GM spokesman Jim Cain.

For instance, a base regular cab will see its price surge by 6 percent to $26,670 for the Silverado and $27,170 for the Sierra, including shipping. To temporarily offset the price increase, GM will offer up to $1,500 cash back through the end of the month on vehicles produced after Oct. 7, 2013. According to Cain, the price hikes are part of GM's new launch plan.

He said that they have successfully "sold down all of our 2013 light-duty trucks" and that they now have good availability, noting that they were able to evolve their pricing into "more of a mainstream approach that gives the dealers new tools to close sales."

General Motors is recalling nearly 21,721 units of the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra Series 1500 pickups due to the possibility that seats may move in a rear-end collision. The recall will cover 18,972 Silverados and Sierra Series 1500 vehicles in the United States, 2,575 in Canada, 103 in Mexico and 71 exports.

The vehicles’ manual front reclining seatbacks may fail to meet a federal safety requirement for performance when hit from the rear. In a statement, GM said that no injuries have so far been reported due to the seats.

GM dealers will inspect the recalled vehicle and make adjustments to the seatbacks if necessary. According to GM spokesman Alan Adler, the work will be covered under the new vehicle warranty. In July, GM issued a recall of 843 Silverado and Sierras due to an issue with the passenger airbag that caused some to not fully inflate during crashes.

General Motors expects its new V-6 engine to increase the demand for the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. The carmaker’s older 195-hp 4.3-liter V-6 loses in towing power and output as well as fuel economy to similar engines in the Ford F-150 and the Ram 1500. The 3.7 liter V-6 in the F-150 provides 302hp while the 3.6-liter V-6 in the Ram 1500 returns 305hp.

GM's new 4.3-liter V-6 now offers 285hp and boasts of higher torque and competitive fuel economy -- 18 city/24 highway – thanks to implementation of advanced technology like direct fuel injection, variable valve timing and cylinder deactivation. GM's new 4.3-liter V-6 also offers the best fuel economy among the similar engines in the three pickups.

GM invested $400 million to retool its Tonawanda site to build the V-6 and three redesigned V-8s, which all belong to the fifth generation of Chevrolet's small-block family.

The United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has given five-star overall safety ratings -- the highest possible -- to the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. NHTSA gave five-star ratings to the Silverado and Sierra 1500, as well as the Silverado High Country and Sierra Denali, making them the first large pickups get such ratings since Us regulators implemented a tougher rating system for the 2011 model year, according to General Motors.

NHTSA's new ratings entail tests for side pole crashes and crash avoidance technologies. The pickups gained five stars on NHTSA’s frontal- and side-crash tests and four stars on the rollover test -- with the overall rating a combination of those ratings. The top ratings provide GM giving a marketing edge over rival pickups, which at the best, received overall four-star ratings.

Some of those pickups, like the 2013 Ford F-150, Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra were given overall four-star ratings from NHTSA. The agency has yet to rate the 2014 Toyota Tundra. The outgoing 2013 Silverado and Sierra also received four stars from NHTSA. GM launched the 2014 pickups in late spring. NHTSA tested only the 2014 crew-cab models, which according to GM will account for around 60 percent of its light-duty pickup sales.

Aerodynamics played a big role in bringing in design changes to the all-new 2014 GMC Sierra full-size pickup truck, making it more fuel efficient and giving it a more silent cabin. It turned out that the 2014 Sierra had more development time in a wind tunnel than any GMC pickup before it. Aerodynamic engineers like Diane Bloch examined every square inch of the Sierra to spot areas that needs to be improved while demystifying some myths along the way.

They used General Motors’ advanced Aerodynamics Lab, a 750-foot-long tunnel in which flow winds of up to 138 mph as produced by 43-foot-diameter fan powered by a 4,500-hp DC electric motor. The Lab allowed engineers to study the way air passes over, under and around the 2014 Sierra. Advancement in aerodynamics will allow the 2014 Sierra to become the most fuel-efficient V-8 pickup.

For instance, a new air dam below the front bumper reduces drag by directing air toward the ground, away from the 2014 Sierra’s underbody. The ducted flow path between the Sierra’s grille and radiator prevents air from moving around inside the truck’s front cavities.

It also has a 3 mpg improvement over a Ram V8. Sierra’s new V-8 fuel economy estimates are also higher than those of the 2013 Ford F-150 EcoBoost V-6. The new 5.3L EcoTec3 V-8 is available with the foremost fuel efficiency with performance and capability.
