2017 Mercedes-AMG GT R raises the bar, now ready for Goodwood debut

Back in 2014, Mercedes-Benz’s high performance division, the Mercedes-AMG GmbH (AMG in short), debuted a two-door two-seat grand tourer coupe that was built to challenge the Porsche 911. Unveiled to the public during the 2014 Paris Motor Show, the Mercedes-AMG GT was built to last in a faceoff with its arch nemesis, the Porsche 911.

The Mercedes-AMG GT has two performance options: the standard GT and the high performance GT S. Both cars run on the same 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine except that the GT is slightly less powerful with 469 horsepower and 433 lb.-ft. torque on tap while the GT S has 503 horsepower and 479 lb.-ft. torque. Of course, since there is a difference in power, there is also a slight difference in the acceleration time.

The GT can sprint through 60 mph in 3.9 seconds while the GT S can go in only 3.7 seconds – only a 0.2 second difference. Moreover, the GT can hit a top speed of only 202 mph, 8 mph slower than that of the 210 mph on the GT S.

Making its global debut at the Goodwood Hill during the press launch day of the Goodwood Festival of Speed is the new Jaguar XFR-S, prototype version of carmaker’s fastest sports saloon. Finished in Italian Racing Red, the Jaguar XFR-S was driven in front of the press at Goodwood by Andy Wallace, victor of the 1988 Le Mans 24 Hours.

Joining the Jaguar XFR-S at press day of Goodwood Festival of Speed are some of the carmaker’s winning sports vehicles. Among them is a 1962 Jaguar Mk. II prepared by Jaguar Heritage Racing and a 1954 ‘short nose’ Jaguar D-Type that is also a development prototype. The vehicles were displayed by the Jaguar Heritage Trust in front of Goodwood House.

The new Jaguar XFR-S, first unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2012, could accelerate from rest to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 186mph (300km/h). The XFR-S builds on the performance of the much-praised Jaguar XFR to become a more focused sports car.

At the launch of the 2013 Festival of Speed, Mercedes-Benz put on display two exceptional, aluminium-bodied, rear wheel drive vehicles that were built 58 years apart. Displayed at the Goodwood Hill were the 300 SLR “Uhlenhaut” Coupé, which was produced in 1955 and driven by Jochen Mass, and the SLS AMG GT, its modern successor and the first example to make it to the UK.

On the surface, they’re highly similar. They’re both front-engined and use rear wheel drive and come with roof-hinged “gullwing” doors. But there are more similarities. Both use a lot of aluminium to cut the weight and boost the strength. Each vehicle uses a hand-built, eight-cylinder engine and was built by a comparably small, very skilled and dedicated team.

The “Uhlenhaut” Coupé is named after Rudolf Uhlenhaut, the famous engineer and formerly the head of vehicle development and creator of the 300 SLR. Built in 1955, the “Uhlenhaut” Coupé is based on highly successful racers, who are most known for the win at Mille Miglia victory of Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson.

Goodwood is paying homage to the Porsche 911 at the 2013 Festival of Speed on July 11 to 14. It’s very fitting that the first half-century of the Porsche 911 at Goodwood is celebrated at the same time as the Festival of Speed’s 20th anniversary year. This iconic sports car has been seen at each single Goodwood Festival from 1993 during its first event, which attracted 27,500 enthusiasts.

Last year, more than 185,000 visitors went to the world’s foremost celebration of car culture. The 911 has had a crucial role in helping to put the Festival of Speed on the map over the last 20 years. The 911 has proven its greatness on the road and on races while being tested at the 1.16-mile Goodwood hillclimb, driving past the Forest Rally Stage, or being viewed at the Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ concours lawn or Porsche exhibition stand.

The Nissan LEAF, which has been awarded as the 2011 Car of the Year, will attempt to be the fastest vehicle ever to be driven – backwards -- up the famous hill course.
