GM stops delivery of 6,281 crossovers over pending Goodyear recall

General Motors has issued a stop-delivery order for 6,281 affected crossovers due to a pending recall by to replace tires prone to cracking. The vehicles affected by the stop-delivery order include the 2015 Chevrolet Traverse, 2015 GMC Acadia and 2015 Buick Enclave crossovers. The maker of those tires, Goodyear, has confirmed to Automotive News that it will recall around 48,500 of its 18-inch Fortera HL tires after finding "very small" cracks in the tread during routine testing.

Goodyear said it produced 32,100 Fortera HL tires (Fortera HL P255/65R18 109S) for the GM crossovers and another 16,400 for the aftermarket. The recall includes around 48,512 tires manufactured between November 30, 2014, and January 10, 2015.
The tire maker has also informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration over the recall. According to a Goodyear spokesman, the cracks in the tread do "not indicate a safety issue."

A spokesman for GM, meanwhile, said the issue "will eventually lead to a non-compliance recall by GM." He said that the crossovers account for 25,124 of the suspected tires. The rest of the possibly defective tires are aftermarket ones.

Every year, the technology editors at Time magazine compile a list of what they consider as the most important innovations of the year. For 2012, the list contains 25 inventions like indoor clouds, the Tesla Model S, and the NASA Z-1 space suit. One particular invention that is included in the "Best Inventions of the Year 2012" is the Air Maintenance Technology from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company's (NYSE: GT).

Goodyear remains to be the largest tire company in the world with 53 facilities spread across 22 countries worldwide and employing 71,000 people. It has two Innovation Centers with one located in Akron, Ohio, with the other being in Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg. In these two facilities, the company hopes to develop services and advanced products that hopefully will be able to set new benchmarks for performance and technology in the auto industry.

Through the Air Maintenance Technology, tire pressure is guaranteed to be at an optimum which translates to potential savings in terms of fuel usage. All of the parts, even the miniaturized pump, will be placed inside the tire. Jean-Claude Kihn, Chief Technical Officer of Goodyear, shared that the company is more than honored to be part of the 'Best Inventions of the Year 2012' created by Time magazine.
