Obama directs agencies to propose new fuel economy standards for heavy-duty trucks

President Barrack Obama has directed the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the US Department of Transportation to propose a second phase of stiffer fuel economy standards by March 2015 for heavy-duty vehicles.  The heavy-duty vehicle category covers three-quarter-ton pickups, large vans, tractor-trailers and garbage trucks.

Obama told the two agencies to finalize their proposals a year later, and to design them to be more stringent until "well into the next decade." "Improving gas mileage for these trucks is going to drive down our oil imports even further," Obama said. "That reduces carbon pollution even more, cuts down on businesses' fuel costs, which should pay off in lower prices for consumers."

The move is the Obama administration’s latest push for fuel savings. The administration has inked an agreement with California and the auto industry to double the fleet-wide fuel economy of cars and light trucks to an average of 54.5 mpg by the 2025 model year – leading to changes in the design of cars and light trucks.

2015 Chevrolet Silverado HD now available with the CNG option

General Motors has just announced that the CNG option is available on all Silverado 2500HD configurations and Silverado 3500HD models with single rear wheels. Both 2500HD double cab and crew cab models are on sale now, while the 2500HD regular cab and all 3500HD models will go on sale in July. With a separate CNG tank, the Silverado HD bi-fuel models have a total range of up to 650 miles.

The 2015 Chevrolet Silverado HD CNG is powered by a unique version of the 6.0-liter V8 engine (dubbed LC8), which is rated at 360 horsepower (268 kW) and 380 lb-ft of torque (515 Nm) on gas, and 301 horsepower (225 kW) and 333 lb-ft of torque (452 Nm) on CNG. A separate CNG fuel tank enables the driver to switch between fuels at the flip of a switch.

For those who don’t know, CNG is cleaner burning than conventional gasoline or diesel. Moreover, most of the natural gas used in the U.S. comes from domestic or other North American sources. According to General Motors, a CNG-powered truck that is driven for 26,000 miles per year can save over $2,000 if natural gas is used at least 75% of he time.

GM chasing Ford with new heavy duty trucks

General Motors has unveiled the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 at the Texas State Fair as it makes a bid to catch up to Ford Motor Co. in the race for heavy-duty truck sales. GM's re-engineered heavy-duty trucks boast of a new exterior and cab design and now include features found on the redesigned light-duty Silverado and Sierra 1500.

According to executives at GM, the improvements can increase Chevrolet and GMC's combined heavy-duty market share – currently at 36 percent – and surpass Ford’s 38 percent share. The heavy-duty truck market amounted to 435,000 units in 2012. According to GM’s estimates, Chrysler’s Ram holds 26 percent of the heavy duty market.

John Schwegman, executive director for U.S. product and pricing on GM trucks, said that they expect to “change the rank order of those numbers by brand with [their] new truck.Improvements include a more aerodynamic front end as well as doors inlaid into the body recesses to cut wind noise. Likewise a torsion bar allows for a gently opening rear tailgate.

Chrysler Group’s Ram brand has launched a national advertising campaign dubbed "Groundbreakers" this weekend for its 2014 heavy-duty trucks. Groundbreakers will show working men in action on the job with the new Ram lineup. According to Ram, the decision to use real working people instead of actors was "significant to the authenticity of the Ram truck brand and customers."

The brand said the ads will help show and reinforce the lineup's capabilities, like 30,000 pounds of towing capacity and 850 pounds-feet of torque as provided by its new Cummins turbodiesel engine. The advertising campaign made its national debut Saturday with two 30-second spots, as narrated by actor and longtime Ram pitchman Sam Elliott.

The ads can also be viewed at Ram’s YouTube channel following its launch. One of the commercials titled "Hell, yes," opens with the line "A man will ask a lot of his truck." It then lists out questions like "Can it tow that?" At the end, all questions are answered with "Hell, yes."

After we saw the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Z71, another addition at Chevrolet’s SEMA booth has been brought to our attention: the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Race Car Hauler.

As its name says it, Chevrolet highlighted the capabilities of the new HD truck by pairing it with a race car mounted on an open trailer.

The new vehicle is equipped with a 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel engine, mated to a revised version of the Allison 1000 six-speed automatic. Still, no powertrain modifications were made to the vehicle. We can’t say the same thing for the interior and the exterior of the car.
