Daimler AG anticipates a huge drop in the costs for EV batteries and fuel cell cars. Herbert Kohler, head of e-drive and future mobility at Daimler, told Automotive News Europe that a lithium ion battery was priced at about 1,500 euros per kilowatt hour but in the midterm, it is expected to be at a level of 400 euros. Kohler said he anticipates an even bigger price drop for fuel cells.
Kohler said that by 2015, a fuel cell car will not cost higher than a four-cylinder diesel hybrid that complies with the Euro 6 emissions standard. He said that he expects EVs to be priced higher than fuel cells in less than five years. This is why Daimler is working fast to get more fuel cell cars on the road.

Mercedes-Benz's first production fuel-cell vehicle, the B-class F-cell, has just been launched. A total of 200 models will be produced later this year and will be sent to customers in the United States and Europe who have leased it in early 2010.
Claimed to have the same level of performance as a 2.0-liter petrol car, the hydrogen-electric hybrid car is propelled by an electric motor that produces 134 bhp (100 kW) of peak motive and 214 lb.-ft. (290 Nm) of max torque. At its core is the new generation of the compact, high-performance fuel cell system, that allows gaseous hydrogen to react with atmospheric oxygen at 700 bar, thereby generating a current for the electric motor to use.
Its zero-emission powertrain can manage the equivalent of 86.6 mpg on the combined cycle. This is an equivalent of 3.3 liters of diesel per 100 km in the NEDC (New European Drive Cycle). BMW’s European customers who are looking forward to have a new range extender version of the 2019 BMW i3 (BMW i3 REx) will have to bear a bad news from the German premium carmaker. They won't be able to get a new one as BMW will stop producing and offering the i3 REx in Europe starting 2019 model year.
It should be noted that BMW still listed the i3 REx in the 2019 model year specification, although its Web site aren’t offering any information about the ranger extender version anymore. This has led to confusion, with many still assuming that that REx version of the i3 would still be available for the upcoming model year. To an extent, there is some truth to this, since while the 2019 BMW i3 REx will be discontinued in Europe, it will still be offered in the United States.
At first glance, it may seem odd that BMW would discontinue the range extender version of the i3, after all the REx had accounted for 60 percent of the model’s sales, despite being around £,3150 more expensive than a standard i3, which is pure electric. However, the true appeal of the i3 REx isn't really the combination of electric motors and a range-extending two-cylinder 650-cc petrol engine to provide additional charge to the drive battery. The distance a vehicle can travel with a full tank of gas or a single full charge is important to any driver. This is why most carmakers reveal the range of their vehicle offerings. With the first example of the I-Pace already delivered to its retail customer, Jaguar has released its MPGe estimates for its electric SUV. Sad to say, but the Jaguar I-Pace doesn’t measure to its EV competitors in terms of electric range.
When Jaguar said that the new I-Pace electric SUV would be getting a large battery as its core, expectations were high for its electric range – until it release its estimated MPGe figures. MPGe stands for miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe), as how the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) converts the power consumed by an EV into a term that is familiar to most Americans. MGPe is essentially how far an electric car can travel on the amount of energy that is equivalent to one gallon of gasoline.
According to Jaguar, the new I-Pace returns 80 MPGe city, 72 MPGe highway and 76 MPGe combined. This means that the Jaguar I-Pace can travel up to 234 miles in all-electric range in a single charge from its 90-kWh battery. The new Porsche Taycan is considered as revolutionary at the German sports car maker as the upcoming model is its first all-electric vehicle. Nonetheless, the new Taycan four-door EV will also be the starting point of a new revolution in the company. As Porsche is committing itself to electric mobility, it also has to undergo a significant change, especially in terms of production.
Porsche is currently building its conventionally powered vehicles, including its 911 sports car, using the traditional principle of an assembly line. But when it commences the production of the Taycan, Porsche will be implementing major changes for the production and assembly facilities of the new EV.
Lutz Meschke, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board and Member of the Board responsible for Finance and IT at Porsche, remarked that starting 2025, more than 50 percent of the Porsche models delivered are expected to be electrified. Not a few motorists were enthralled when Volkswagen unveiled the ID Buzz Concept at the 2017 Detroit Motor Show. VW is putting the ID Buzz into production and make it available as early as 2022. Now, the German group, through Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, is now testing the waters for the possibility of offering a zero-emission transporter based on the ID Buzz.
The new ID Buzz Cargo is simply a progressive sibling for the ID Buzz. But instead of carrying people, the all-electric ID Buzz Cargo carries out the job as a commercial vehicle. VW unveiled and is currently displaying the ID Buzz Cargo concept at the 2018 IAA Commercial Vehicles in Hannover, Germany (September 20 to 27, 2018). Created as a supplementary model to the VW Transporter T6, the ID Buzz Cargo being presented in Hannover is already close to production, which may happen as early as 2021.
Just like the ID Buzz, the ID Buzz Cargo will be available in different battery sizes, according to the purpose and budget of the customer. Underpinned by the Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB), the ID Buzz Cargo can be installed with batteries that allow all-electric ranges of between 330 km and over 500 km (as per WLTP). Porsche has already officially announced that it is dropping its diesel-powered vehicles across its lineup while the German sports car maker re-focuses its energy towards electrification. But unofficially, it seems that Porsche is also planning to drop its petrol offerings in favor of an all-electric lineup, save for its 911 sports car.
Citing a person privy with Porsche, manager magazin reported that with the exception of the 911, all other models at Porsche – Boxster, Cayenne, Macan and Panamera – will become pure electric offerings. This means that non-911 models would be dropping not just their diesel engines, but also their petrol engines as well. That basically means no more internal combustion engines at Porsche, except for the 911. The 911 would be spared from being converted into a pure electric unit simply because it is a sports car for the purists.
Porsche conversion of its non-911 models into all-electric vehicles would mean that there would be no hybrid powerplant for these offerings. At the start of the year, Ford announced that it is planning to develop a new electric vehicle that focuses on performance. At the announcement, Ford said that the new performance EV would be named Mach 1. Eventually, the Mach 1 moniker was shelved, but not the performance EV. Now, Ford has released a new teaser that officially previews this upcoming EV.
During the January announcement, Ford said that this performance EV would released in 2020. In March this year, Ford Global Markets President Jim Farley remarked that the performance EV would be like a four-door SUV version of a Ford Mustang. Essentially, this means that the new performance EV would be an electric SUV with the looks or performance of the Mustang, or both.
Now, the recently released teaser image looks like a sketched silhouette of Ford’s new performance EV. It may seem so vague and unclear until a closer inspection reveals that it features the rear end of a Ford Mustang. That basically confirms the relationship of the new performance to Ford’s iconic pony car. It is quite common to see Mercedes-Benz taxis plying the streets of Germany. Mercedes-Benz E-Class taxi models can be found in almost every taxi stand throughout the country. In fact, three of every five taxis in Germany are Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Mercedes’ dominance in its home country isn't expected to be toppled soon, but Jaguar Land Rover of the United Kingdom is taking its chances with the new Jaguar I-Pace.
While 60 percent of all taxis in Germany being Mercedes E-Class, Jaguar is only sending 10 units of the I-Pace. Likewise, these 10 I-Pace units will only be fielded in the city of Munich, which is the home city of another German premium carmaker – BMW. The Jaguar I-Pace crossover taxis will be fielded in the city by Munich’s largest taxi operator.
In a statement, Jaguar Land Rover chief executive Ralf Speth said that the carmaker is inviting people in Munich not just to drive electric vehicles, but also drive Jaguar. He remarked that one of the reasons that Jaguar Land Rover deployed the I-Pace taxis in Munich is the mixed traffic. Porsche managed to drop quite a powerful bomb at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show in March when it unveiled the Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo, a concept study of an electrically driven Cross Utility Vehicle (CUV). Being a concept, the path of the Mission E Cross Turismo into becoming a production electric CUV isn't fully assured. However, there is a reason expect its production version three years from now.
A report from Automobile Magazine, citing the supplier community, is saying that the Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo will be launched into the market in late 2021. If this is true, then this means that newly unveiled BEV sibling of the Porsche Taycan – formerly known as the Porsche Mission E – would be plying the roads as a more practical version of the Taycan around three years from now. Stefan Weckbach, head of Porsche’s global electrification efforts, has told Automobile Magazine during a test ride in one of the prototypes of the Porsche Mission E Crosss Turismo that the German sports car maker is working on the electric CUV concept with volume production in mind, although they have yet to receive an official go-ahead. He noted that with two motors -- one up front and another in the back -- an all-wheel drive system and an underfloor battery pack, the Mission E Crosss Turismo is also close to the final configuration. Soon, it will be end of the road for the people’s car from Germany – the Volkswagen Beetle – as the carmaker is due to end the production of the second generation in 2019. Sadly, VW has no plans to give the Beetle a direct successor. Nonetheless, it remains possible that the name “Beetle” would be resurrected as an all-new model distinct from its current two-door form.
A report from Autocar is saying that VW is considering creating a revolutionary new Beetle, one that has four doors and powered by an electric powertrain. The new Beetle could be presented as part of the army of emotional cars that VW plans to launch along its standard models.

Right now, Audi is in the earliest stages when it comes to developing a fully electric supercar. But as this technology is still a few years away before they can be used, Audi sees this as one of the obstacles.
Peter Oberndorfer, Audi’s boss of product and technology communications, told Motoring that at this moment, they really consider everything, but they think that battery development is vital.
Oberndorfer believes that future solid state batteries will be necessary to achieve the perfect combination of performance and range. Peter Mertens, the development boss, confirms that solid state batteries will not be available anytime soon. For those of you who have been waiting for Porsche’s first electric vehicle, which is supposed to come after the Porsche Mission E, the automaker had just reported that the production version will be called the Taycan, coming to dealers in 2019. According to Oliver Blume, Porsche Boss, the name Taycan translates to “lively, young horse”, reports CNBC. The title is a reference to the horse on the city of Stuttgart coat of arms that also appears on the Porsche emblem.
As we saw in the spy shots, the Taycan is a sleek sedan that kind of looks like an overextended 911 turned into a four door. It has got a low nose featuring LED headlights, and there the roof is also slightly sloped that lends a coupe like silhouette. Inside, expect Porsche to pack the four door with the company’s cutting edge equipment.
According to reports, the range topping Taycan will have over 600 horsepower (447 kilowatts), thanks to its electric motors. It is now able to accelerate to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in under 3.5 seconds. Porsche also promises that it will have a driving range of 311 miles (500 kilometers) in only a single charge. Since electric vehicles are becoming more popular, and are also becoming more viable for long distance trips, car enthusiasts would try and push the limits of what their cars are capable of on a single charge. Two men in Denver decided to take out the Tesla Model 3 over the weekend to drive it, and after 32 hours, they celebrated victory. However, that’s all their car can do.
EV aficionados have this term they use, “hypermiling”, to describe the idea of them getting the most juice out of their car’s battery, though efficient driving on a forgiving route. The guys we mentioned earlier were Sean M. Mitchell and Erik Strait, who set out on Friday to firmly beat the previous hypermiling record on a closed loop near the Denver Airport. The loop was about a mile in distance, and featured an elevation change of only 10 feet, while the two drove at speeds between 20 and 30 miles per hour.

A little less than a year ago, Richard Hammond was able to escape death during a hillclimb event that took place in Hemberg, Switzerlnad. Here, he flipped the Rimac Concept One, and it rolled over several times. Hammond was able to get out of the car before burst into flames, suffering some injuries. Today, the guy is is perfect shape.

But in contrary, Croatian electric hypercar vehicle, Rimac, was able to sell three cars that exact same day, according to Kreso Coric, their head of sales. He added that it was actually the “best marketing ever”.
Despite saying that, Coric admitted that he was concerned about the aftermath of the horrible crash. On May 19, 2018, everybody from all over the world was tuned into the royal wedding, and of course, in an event like that, every single detail matters - from the wedding cake to the bride’s dress. As Prince Harry and Meghan left Windsor Castle in London in a Jaguar Classic all electric E-type, which first made its appearance in 2017 at the Tech Fest event in London. If you recall, the automaker has promised that all its production vehicles will be electric by 2020.

Lagonda, Aston Martin’s first ever luxury sub-brand, has officially revealed its very first car that is slated to arrive in 2021. First of all, it will be an all-electric SUV.
As of now, there are no concrete details about the car just yet. However, what we know is that it will feature styling that’s an evolution of the Vision Concept that was shown at the Geneva motor show in March.
The Vision Concept was revealed to give us a preview of the Lagonda brand. For years, they have shown concept cars but these have not had a proper production run since 1989 when the Lagonda sedan was canned. At the International Electric Vehicle Expo in South Korea, Kia revealed the highly anticipated Kia Niro EV together with the the Niro Plug-In Hybrid and Soul EV. Aside from the reveal of the production version of the pure electric crossover, the automaker also gave us information on this soon to be available electric CUV.
Similar to the Hyundai Kona EV’s offerings, the electric Niro will be offered with two different battery options: a 39.2 kilowatt hour version and a 64 kilowatt hour version. Take note though that only the beefier version will be offered in the United States. According to Kia, the smaller battery will have a range of 149 miles per charge, while the bigger one is claimed to have 236 miles. The similar Hyundai Kona may be a little smaller, but it can go a little further per charge.
