Hydrogen Fuel Cell Chevrolet Colorado on its way thanks to US Army TARDEC and GM

A prototype of the Chevrolet Colorado midsize pickup that’s meant to run on a commercially made hydrogen fuel cell propulsion cell is currently in the works. However, it’s not meant for the consumers just yet.

This Colorado prototype is a collaboration between General Motors and the U.S. Army’s Tank Automotive Research, Development & Engineering Center (TARDEC). According to Charlie Freese, who is executive director for Global Fuel Cell Engineering Activities at GM, the collaboration is meant to test GM’s hydrogen fuel cell technology to its limits.

Freese said that collaborating with the military creates an opportunity for the company to use heavy military usage as a means to gauge the performance of the technology. As for TARDEC, its director Paul Rogers stated that the collaboration will give the outfit the opportunity to gauge the potential that hydrogen fuel cell technology can bring to the military.

BMW X7 SUV rendered as a luxurious pickup truck by X-Tomi

Mercedes-Benz commenced production of the X-Class pickup truck (2018 model year) in 2017, thereby entering the luxury pickup segment. Many expected BMW to follow suit, but until now the German premium carmaker remains unmoved for calls to make its own pickup truck. Thus, seeing a BMW pickup even in concept form would be a farfetched idea; but not with X-Tomi.

An automotive graphic designer who has released a number of amazing automotive renditions, X-Tomi has delved into a more interesting project in the guise of a BMW X7 pickup truck. All X-Tomi needed to do was to have an image of the newly unveiled BMW X7 sports utility vehicle, chopped off its rear end, and added a bed. This sounds simple, but the entire rendition process is really complicated. In the end, X-Tomi proved that a BMW pickup –as derived from an X7 SUV – does look elegant and utilitarian.

Nonetheless, X-Tomi’s rendition of a BMW X7 pickup is all hypothetical as the German luxury carmaker recently confirmed that it has no plans to go compete with Mercedes in the luxury pickup segment. Likewise, a new pickup derived from the X7 would mean it would be underpinned by a body-on-frame chassis that usually serves as the platform for pickups.

Hennessey Goliath 6X6 is 705-hp off-road monster with optional 808-hp upgrade

Here comes a 6x6 pickup truck that can sprint from zero to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. It isn't only mean and fully capable, but is also menacingly fast. We are referring to the all-new Hennessey Goliath 6X6, the latest creation of North American automotive tuner Hennessey Performance (HPE).

The new Hennessey Goliath 6X6 is essentially HPE’s follow-up to the VelociRaptor 6X6, which was unleashed in 2017. While the VelociRaptor 6X6 sounds faster than the Goliath 6X6, the latter is actually quicker on the sprint.

HPE created the Hennessey Goliath 6X6 from a Chevrolet Silverado, in particular from a Trail Boss Z71 model. This version of the Silverado was already a capable machine off the road. But HPE transformed it into a creation that most off-roaders would crave for.

When the Mercedes-Benz X-Class was unveiled in 2017, it was no doubt a representation of luxury among pickup trucks. While Maybach represents the ultra-luxurious side of Mercedes-Benz, the X-Class isn't one. However, a Polish company that goes by the name of Carlex Design is offering to convert the new X-Class into a Maybach-like pickup in terms of looks and features.

Carlex Design noted that the Mercedes-Benz X-Class deserves to be called as a luxury pickup. Not only that the pickup offers a drive comparable to a sports utility vehicle, it also delivers a smooth comfortable ride. In addition, the new X-Class, in its standard guise, isn't just coz and comfortable, but is also equipped with features found in premium cars. Thus, Carlex Design made the X-Class a subject of a new conversion program that could be availed for as low as EUR105,000. To prove its point, the Polish specialist created an example.

At a glance, the Mercedes-Benz X-Class by Carlex Design is undeniably an X-Class but with a twist. The typical grille of the X-Class has been replaced by that of a Maybach. In particular, this conversion employs a grille from the Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet.

Nowadays, building luxurious pickup trucks isn’t unusual for automakers. One prime example is the Ford F-150 Limited that costs $62,000. But now, we welcome the arrival of the Atulux, short for All Terrain Utility Luxury by Italian automaker Aznom Automotive. For instance, the previous generation Ram 1500 pickup was converted into an opulent SUV. Though the SUV only fits two passengers in the back, they are surrounded with a posh cabin and they get a Nespresso coffee machine and a milk frother that rises from the center console, making it perfect for those who are addicted to caffeine.

Measuring nearly six meters (19.6 feet) long, the Atuluz still looks the same except that it has almost doubled in size. The extra room allowed the company to install an additional sunroof as well as a more accommodating passenger compartment. To keep it looking like a Ram 1500, Atulux maintains a lot of its design cues like the crosshair grille. At the back, the company fits a tiny truck that boasts a look similar to the recent Mercedes Maybach Ultimate Luxury Concept.

Mechanically, the SUV keeps the Ram’s original 5.7 liter V8 that gives an output of 396 horsepower (295 kilowatts) here. When converting, Aznom reinforces the frame and installs bigger brakes, alongside eight piston calipers in front. An air suspension also provides a supple ride, and additional sound proofing to give the passengers peace and silence.

The Ford F-150 Raptor is probably one of the coolest offroad vehicles out there, and the great news is that the automaker already has planned upgrades for the 2019 model year, to make the already rugged pickup even more capable. The upgraded truck will be easier to drive even on extremely bumpy roads, and this will be out in dealerships by the end of the year.

The Blue Oval will further improve the Raptor suspension after already fitting larger diameter FOX Racing shocks for the 2017 model year upgrade. The newest version features Live Valve technology that varies compression rates to adjust the damping to the terrain ahead.

This adapts to the terrain in real time to actively maximize handling, comfort and bottom out resistance. Sensors found on the suspension and body can monitor what’s happening while tweaking the setup accordingly. The technology will even be aware of when the pickup is in the air when it jumps, stiffening the dampers to ensure a smoother landing.

Ram has finally announced that they will have a competitor for the Ford F-150 Raptor, and that is the Ram TRX. Since the automaker now has a new Ram 1500 platform available, the company is looking to expand its trim and offerings, hoping to get more market share. To be able to achieve that, and please truck enthusiasts at the same time, is to shift their focus to domestic rival Ford.

This news has been welcomed by many, even on a day filled with a handful of product news from Jeep, Alfa Romeo, and Maserati, we still do not have complete details. Last April, it was reported by 5thGenRams that there will be new versions of the trucks, a TR that’s been toned down, and the performance oriented TRX. However, they did not mention anything about a TR.

Initially, Ram hinted at an off road performance truck back in 2016 with the Ram Rebel TRX Concept. To get the public interested, the concept was given as much as 575 horsepower. Considering that Ram has confirmed we're getting the TRX, interest must have been high. A vehicle like this would also allow the automaker to pad their profit margins.

The Honda Civic Type R is the fastest front wheel drive model at the Magny Cours track, while also being one of the fastest pickup trucks in the world. Yes, you read that right. The specialist from the Product Engineering department at the automaker’s UK factory in Swindon has built a one-off Civic Type R pickup truck, and it just made its debut at the SMMT Test Day in Great Britain.

To create the unique Project P Concept, the engineers had to get a pre-production prototype of the hot hatch, which was unveiled a year ago. It has two doors and two seats, as well as a flatbed at the back of the rear seats, replacing the rear bench and boot space.

The transformation made sure that it still retains the rear fixed wing. But the wings here really aren’t fixed, as it has a movable design, allowing access to the load bed of the small pickup. One of our favourite design details of the new Type R, a set of triple exhaust pipes at the back, is here as well. The exterior body is finished in a Rallye Red, one of the signature colours of the Civic Type R hatch.

For those of you who are not aware, the Mercedes-Benz X-Class is exactly the same model as the Nissan Navara, except it is dressed in fancier clothes while featuring some additional technology too. Also, the X-Class has been offering a more powerful six cylinder diesel engine since March.

Since there isn’t much of a difference between the two, there are some customers who are not willing to spend quite a bit more on the Mercedes-Benz X-Class. Instead, they opt for the more mainstream version. Nonetheless, the world’s largest aftermarket tuner, Brabus, has created a tuning package for this truck that might convince them to reconsider.

Brabus has developed a full-on exterior and interior kit for the X Class, giving it a sportier look while improving on its practicality. Among the add-ons are new LED markers built into the front bumper and another lighting module with twelve diodes on the roof, which is activated with the high beam. The revised fascia then gets a new grille design, and in the back is a set of chrome tailpipes.

Last month, we learned that Nissan filed a patent for the name “Off Roader.” We took this as a strong hint that it won’t be long before they launch a model that will rival the Ford Ranger Raptor. Well apparently, we guessed it right, as Nissan had just launched the Navara Off Roader AT32 at the 2018 Commercial Vehicle Show held in Birmingham, United Kingdom. In fact, the off roader looks like it is heady to go head to head with its American rival as well as other sporty pickup trucks. But there are some things that you should be aware of.

Nissan’s newest Off Roader AT32 was built together with Arctic Trucks, a company based in lceland that specializes in building hardcore 4WD vehicles that can be driven on any terrain. As you can see, the “AT” in the truck’s name comes from the company’s name while “32” is an indication of the performance pickup’s 32-inch tires that are wrapped around the 17-inch alloy rims, which the off road company had also designed. The tires that were installed on the pickup were specially chosen for excellent off- and on-road performance.

The Off Roader AT32 had also been given a custom suspension, which raises its ground clearance to 9.6 inches (24.3 centimeters), there is a noticeable difference considering that the regular Navara only had a ground clearance of 8.8 inches (22.3 centimeters). However, the said model is still 1.5 inches lower compared to the Ford Ranger Raptor.

Aftermarket tuner Roush is largely known in the automotive industry for turning Ford Mustangs into monsters that produce insane amounts of horsepower. Now guess what? The tuner has entered the super duty truck market and has recently unveiled the 2018 Roush Ford Super Duty F-250, and this thing looks pretty sick!

Taylor Bloor, vice president for global sales for Roush Performance, said that this is the perfect car for drivers who want an aggressive, no-compromise look for their pickup truck, making it an ideal entry into the Super Duty market. This 2018 Roush Super Duty F-250 doesn’t only look intimidating with its offroad stance, but it also is not afraid to get dirt on it. It is reliable and functional, and it is cool too.

Similar to most Roush tuned cars out there, the Roush F-250 gets a number of added pieces that make it look tough. Firstly, it had been given a Fox 2.0 Performance suspension system along with a 1.5 inch leveling kit. The body sits on a set of 20 inch wheels with integrated bead protection. During Roush’s press release, they said that the capped chrome wheels can withstand Ford’s factory towing capabilities. These are wrapped in BFGoodrich KO2 All-Terrain 35.3 inch tires that provide all the traction you will need. It also has a new exhaust system that can be heard around your neighbourhood.

You will probably be surprised that there is a Volkswagen pickup truck on US soil. Yes, it’s true. It’s called the VW Atlas Tanoak Concept. But before you get too excited, VW has said that it is not planning to bring this model to production.

CEO of Volkswagen North American Region, Hinrich Woebcken, even made it clear that he is not interested in selling a truck in the United States market. Last month in Chicago, during a roundtable interview, he told reporters that the full size truck market in the country is too loyal to their brands that a newcomer is unlikely to make an impact.

Meanwhile, the midsized truck segment will just not work for VW when it comes to sales as the volume is too low. The automaker sees the potential to grow in the segments it is currently in. Unfortunately, pickups are not on the list.

Over the years, GMC has offered more sophisticated versions of General Motors pickups and SUVs. At the same time, GMC’s Denali sub brand has turned their vehicles a little more upscale. And now, Chevy has gotten a sub brand that is more focused on the offroading segment.

GMC actually invited everyone a bit early to New York so that we could see the 2019 Sierra AT4, before its debut. This is the off roading variant of the pickup. At the same time, the automaker announced that all models in their lineup will carry the “AT4” badge for two years. They also made it clear that the AT4 line will be aimed at the off road segment.

When looking at the Sierra AT4, it does look like it has some offroad credibility. It even gets a two-inch lift kit with Rancho monotube shocks, and it sits on a set of either 18- or 20-inch wheels. The Sierra AT4 is available in four wheel drive and is standard with a two speed transfer case and a locking rear differential.

The Ram 1500 Limited is one impressive car already, considering that it is the range-topping model. Now, the automaker has decided to give it more personality and class while getting inspiration from America’s most famous horse race.

2019 Ram 1500 Limited Kentucky Derby Edition gets some extra amenities. There will also be a slight discount that will come with the new 1500 Limited. The Limited’s normal base price is $53,890 (before destination), versus the Kentucky Derby Edition that has a starting price of $53,190 (plus an extra $1,645 destination charge). To let these trucks stand out from the rest, there are the rose and horseshoe Kentucky Derby logo on each side of the bed near the taillights. These will also be the first Ram 1500s that will be available in the new Ivory White Tri Coat paint. Buyers also have the choice to go for the following shades: Delmonico Red, Diamond Black Crystal, Granite Crystal, Max Steel, or Patriot Blue.

Mercedes-Benz is set to unveil the new X350d 4Matic X-Class at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. It was back in July 2017 when the brand first premiered its pickup which utilizes the chassis, as well as certain body panels, of the Nissan Navara. However this version is set out to be the most expensive one yet.

This new model has a six-cylinder engine and the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive. Specifically, the new X-Class is fitted with the turbodiesel 3.0-liter V6 engine that benefits from the common-rail direct injection. With this, it can deliver an output of 258 hp (190 kW) with top torque measured to be 406 lb.-ft. (550 Nm) and available at 1,4000 rpm and up to 3,200 rpm.

As a comparison, the highest specification of the biturbodiesel V6 engine fitted in the Volkswagen Amarok is only able to deliver 224 hp (165 kW). In addition, while the amount of torque is similar, it is available beginning 1,5000 rpm. Paired to this engine is the 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission having steering wheel shift paddles as well as the ECO start/stop function. This transmission has been modified to allow it to transmit 60% of the available torque to the vehicle's rear wheels to result in a rear-based configuration, highly suitable especially for a pickup truck.

Mercedes-Benz managed to get ahead of its peers, especially BMW, in the luxurious premium sector when it unleashed the 2018 Mercedes-Benz X-Class. Despite Mercedes’ bold move, BMW has yet to follow suit. But it might do so as its unit down under, BMW Australia, has been pleading with the German premium carmaker to come with a pickup that would challenge the Mercedes-Benz X-Class.

Marc Werner, chief executive officer of BMW Australia, said in an interview with Car Advice that there is a real demand for pickup trucks in a number of global markets, such as Australia, South East Asia and Africa, as well as South America. He remarked that BMW simply cannot ignore this demand – not when chief rival Mercedes has entered the race.

During the interview, Werner told Car Advice that BMW Australia has been very pushy when it comes to utes or pick-ups, adding that the unit believes that the German carmaker should consider the matter. He remarked that BMW Australia has already taken the matter with the main headquarters, adding that BMW is already conducting studies. However, Werner said, it is remains too early to speak about the results of the investigation. He quipped that BMW Australia would be happy if BMW decides to build an ute for this market. Werner also said that BMW cannot just ignore or neglect market trends.

While Ford prepares for the production of the new Ranger Raptor in Europe, other automakers like Nissan are also looking into the idea of an off road oriented pickup. During an interview with Australian publication Motoring, the Japanese automaker suggested a similar go fast treatment similar to that of the new Ranger.

Meanwhile, Nissan’s Australian division has already urged executives to carry on with the more powerful Navarra. This project has not been officially confirmed, also because the small pickup shares the same platform with the more luxurious Mercedes-Benz X Class. Therefore, it will not be possible to see Nissan adopt the same 3.0 liter turbodiesel V6 found on the new Benz.

Ashwani Gupta, Renault Nissan’s global light commercial vehicle boss, informed the publication that he will soon be meeting with Australian executives during the launch of the Series 3 D23 Navara. He also mentioned that he would be open to seeing a more rugged Navara.

Ram Trucks dropped quite a bomb at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show when it unveiled the all-new 2019 Ram 1500, representing the fifth generation of the light duty pickup truck. Now, the Ram 1500 is making an appearance at the 2018 Chicago Auto Show, and this time, the light duty pickup truck is wrapped in Mopar parts and accessories.

A result of a partnership between the Ram Trucks and Mopar brands, a 2019 Ram 1500 modified for outdoor sports is making an appearance in Chicago. It is essentially the Big Horn Sport 4x4 version of the newly unveiled fifth-generation Ram 1500 as wrapped in Flame Red finish and dressed up in a wide array of Mopar products designed especially for this light duty pickup truck. According to Pietro Gorlier, Head of Parts and Service at Mopar, the customized truck at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show demonstrates what is possible when accessorizing the all-new Ram 1500.

These Mopar products include certain parts that enhance the truck’s off-rood capability as well as numerous storage systems, parts and accessories. While the customized 2019 Ram 1500 is already clothed with several Mopar parts and accessories, the menu for the all-new light duty pickup truck actually listed more than 200 available products. That’s pretty extensive.
